For starters you can use this gb kernel that will directly boot into cwm (won't boot system until something is flashed over it) : here
Then I suggest reading about some of the options available to kernel/recoveries that are safe to use to wipe/backup/restore once in ICS.
New and Need Your Help. Thank you.
Hello. I am brand new to this, but can follow directions really well. I Rooted my Galaxy S II EL29 w/o a problem and followed the directions here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229... to get a ROM version of ICS.
Now, my questions are (After searching through the forum for two days):
What is the BEST and SAFEST way to try and install other leaked ROMs?
I currently have 'Android system recovery <3e>'. Do you recommend something better or stick with what I have?
Also, Which ROM do you believe is the best one that comes close (w/o bugs) to the latest ICS/Jelly Bean?
P.S. ~ How can I add Beats Audio after flashing a ROM?
Thank you in advance for your prompt replies.
So you have stock rooted FF18 Rom and kernel now. You need a kernel with custom recovery to flash anything. The safest way is to go to sfhub's thread where you got ICS tar file and click on the Auto Root link in that thread. That will tell you how to add Clockwork Mod recovery to the setup you have now. It's a script you run on your pc with the phone plugged in. Pretty easy and he explains it pretty thoroughly. After you have CWM, good idea to boot into recovery and backup your phone before you go any further. Hold volume up and power at the same time and hold them until you are in recovery mode. Select backup and let it run.
Once you've done that and want to get on another ICS Rom, flash Calkulin's format all zip made especially for this phone. It will wipe everything except your sd card in the proper order and has never bricked a phone as far as I know. It will clear all your apps and data the same way flashing the FF18 tar file did so you'll have to reinstall all your apps. Get it here.
http://db.tt/sUM1uH72
When the format all its done, flash your new Rom. Wicked Sensations and Agat63's Rom are a couple of my favorites but there are several I haven't tested yet. If you want to try AOKP roms or Cyanogen Mod, better do more reading. They are different animals than the Touchwiz based roms so you have to know what you are doing with the recoveries on those.
We don't have jelly bean for this phone yet and I can't help you with beats audio except I think a couple of Mijjah's roms might have it built in. I don't think you can flash it on top of a Rom but I could be wrong. Good luck
Edit: Wicked Sensations was just updated and has a few elements from jelly bean in it. I plan on trying out over the weekend
I'll second Agats rom as a rock solid product... I also really like m'ics lately.

What do you suggest... Thank you.
Hello and thank you for your response.
After waiting awhile for a response decided to read and read and read more. Basically doing some more research so I DO NOT BRICK my mobile phone.
This is what I did... I flashed back to EL29 Rooted, installed Clockwork Mod recovery, and installed Team VeNuM Blue Boa v0.2. Everything seems to work fine. I did find and installed 'Beats Audio Mod' an hour ago. Oh yeah, I did do a Backup right after installing CWM.
Now, is it SAFE to flash another ICS ROM, like Wicked Sensations or Agat63's ROM, after flashing Calkulin's Format All Zip? QBKING77 stated that he recommends going back to Ginger Bread and installing CWM before flashing another ICS. He does not recommend going from ICS to ICS. What do you think about that? Also, can you send me the links that has the instructions to install the ROMS you like? Thank you.
You are doing things right by reading up and waiting until you are confident you know what to do. That's why I am more than willing to help. This stuff has all been covered but there are still plenty of new people who are tired of waiting for ICS rooting this phone recently. The Odin method QBking describes IS the safest way and I did it that way quite a few times when the leaks became available. It involves more steps and you need your pc. Since you already know how to use Odin maybe you would feel safer doing it that way. However, many of us have used the format all zip to switch ICS roms and its been done probably thousands of times with no problems. Never heard of a brick yet using it. Also keep in mind most of the custom roms such as Boa already have a custom recovery built in so you won't have to keep using Auto Root to add CWM. Good job
So since I am new to this forum I assume this is where I am able to post since I cannot post in the dec sesction. I am trying to root my lg nitro which i just got form at&t july 2012. It has 2.3.5 android on it and I have rooted my other phones np but this one is annoying. Ive tried all versions of super one click and unlock and doomlord as well.
I assume my nitro just cant be rooted at the moment? ive made sure debuggin is checked and have tried them using card mounted and unmounted. have factory reset and tried fresh still a no go. I noticed in doomlord that i get chmod read only and cannot write superuser.apk reado only as if my phone chmod is set to read only.
Just asking here if anyone knows for sure if my version of nitro can be rooted so i am not banging my head against the wall....though at&t tech upper lvl told me other day lg nitro gets ics at end of july for sure but ya know how that goes.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi talrune,
Welcome to the community. Unfortunately, you are not the only one that has had problems rooting the 2.3.5 ROM. AT&T has done a good job at locking it down. Several people have just given up on it.
The best way to get root on your Nitro is to head over to the Development section and flash a pre-rooted ICS ROM. You might also try the method I have listed in my signature. I haven't tried it on 2.3.5 so I would be interested in knowing if it works with it or not.
root ur phone
Hi Guys,
I had the same issue.. tried several times.. with doomlords, tsparkys and superoneclick...
But after multiple retries. finally managed to root 2.3.5 using SuperOneCLick 2.3.2.. and it is fine now..
Never give up,, keep on trying.. ur phone rooting time wud be just round the corner.
Yes I did download honos which i assume it is the prerooted ics and i put it in root directory of my sd card but dont i need phone rooted to put a rom manager on there to then flash the prerooted ics rom?

You can follow the unbricking guide that will take you back to 2.3.4 which was extremely easy to root.

Yeah i would have used his but as i said I cannot get my phone to root with any of the methods listed even the ICS version I cant get it to root either. I guess ill have to find a stock 2.3.4 rom to flash to but i assumed ya would have to have root to downgrade to 2.3.4
End our misery
If you get it to work please let me know because im in the exact boat as you. Tried every method many times.
What would be nice to see is someone who has done it on the AT&T LG NITRO HD, upload a video or screenshot slide show of step by step install of ROM, since other instructions dont seem to work for everyone. If i get it to root il be sure to make a better step by step instruction video.
Hi,
Ive had my Xperia Play for months, since December, I havent done anything with it, its as fresh as when it came in the box. Having heard the news that they'll be no ICS for the Play I wanted to know how to put ICS on my phone. Im a total noob at this so I'm not sure what to do?
U gonna need to flash custom ROM and probably kernel.
Just browse through android development section to find most suitable ROM n kernel for your device and need

You can't flash a kernel onto the Play via CWM. You can use Flashtool or Fastboot, doesn't matter which (Flashtool is just the GUI, really)

Here you go.
Thanks, i almost use the app root unlock, but that guide is the safest for a g2 that was upgrade with ota right? When i finish the step 2 and have the recovery installed, i can uset that cwm with othe rom?
And another question, i know the partitions from the g2 is different from desire z, when i flash a rom, that doesnt matter?
Thanks for your help ( i have been use samsung, so i am little lost with htc)

Follow the guide kinked to you all the way until you are running cm7, play with it a bit then decide if you want to upgrade or change you recovery, radio and hboot.
All of which are easy enough to do, the recovery you will have after following this guide is sub par so you may find others better, the radio may not be best for you but know one will know which is as it differs for everyone, and the dzhboot has a larger system partition and will allow you to flash sense ROMs, if that's what your into than change to that. But first just follow all steps to downgrade and root and run cm7 a bit, then go back and make changes to firmware

Allright, thanks, i will do that first, if i have any question i will ask again, but first i will do that
Allright, everything went perfect (a little scared because a time ago i bricked a G1). Now the G2 is in cm7.2
And now? i need the desire z hboot to flash JB roms? or only for sense? and i need to update the recovery? i want at least ICS but i dont know if it will be necessary the desire z hboot and dont know if it safe
I'm glad you got it handled! Only need the dz hboot for sense ROMs, some ICS and up can be sense though, its easy enough to change as is the recovery and radio, all of which is safest to do in fastboot, here's a little guide I made on just that

It seem more easy than the other steps so, if i install the desire z hboot, i can use it for everything, i mean, with g2 hboot i cant use some roms, and with desirez hboot i can use all rom, so i can have all the time the desire z hboot right? and personally, what recovery is best for you? in Inspire 4G i used the Ext4, but dont know if stay with that version of CWM or flash Ext4.
And the radio, isnt necessary to change when i change the hboot right? because the actual radio is working very good
And THanks for your time
Yep with the dz hboot you can flash any ROM for the vision, but you sacrifice a bit internal memory for it, no big deal though. As for recoveries I really recommend 4ext, I've used many different recoveries in android and have never seen a better one. And no you don't need to change radio, only change it when you data/reception seems like it could be improved. Well with that also battery life, but if it ain't broke don't fix it!
Happy flashing!

Allright, thanks if my girlfriend has problems with reception i will flash radio, but for now, is perfect. I will do this in the morning, i will download some roms and see whats fit better thank you so much.
I just want to say, thanks for all, i did it this week because my girlfriend was out.The phone is running now the .19 radio, the ext4 recovery and 1 build of Cm9. THanks for your help
Hello guys!
I just received a LG Nitro HD P930 phone. Its ATT branded and running Official 4.0.4 ICS android.
Please help me just in few words:
1. How to root this phone? Name the pro
2. How to install CWM recovery?
3. How to install Cyanogen mod 10.1 (or the most stable custom MULTIlanguage rom)
I read a few threads about this, but they are old or not that described. I read the superoneclick can root the phone, and then just install CWM, put the CM 10 zip to SD card and flash it via recovery?
Is it that simple ? I'm not new to android, I rommed a lot on my Sam Galaxy S, just don't wana brick my new phone.
Just in few word, is it that simple really? you would same me a lot of time
Thank you.

I'm no expert, but I think if you have ATT ICS you can root, but you can't install CWM or custom ROMs because of the locked bootloader.
You need to use one of the unbrick guides to downgrade your phone to rooted GB, then you can flash custom ROMs like CM10.1.
I'll let someone else post the link to the best unbricking guide... I ended up starting with one and finishing with another because I got stuck halfway.

As for a ROM.... I am using miroslave__mm's ROM 4.2.2...... Its extremely stable... No reboots, BT works, the screen locks without an issue... The one thing I'm not happy with is that I can't OC my phone or control the voltage, which is a big thing for me to be able to do that..... I tried a couple different kernels and they either don't work, or BT won't work.. I need BT so I am stuck with this one for now.... If I could OC with the kernel that's supplied with this ROM , I would consider this ROM near perfect, for my use.
I use the same guide on windows 7 64 bit it work on the first try

Thank you very much guys, I'm gonna do the update today, and report back. I hope I'll succeed !
BTW I have win 7 64bit
Hello guys! I succeeded !! Everything went smooth following that guide. Only problem was that KDZ update since I have win 7. But fortunately I have a windows XP pc here, and I do that step there.
I installed miroslave__mm's ROM 4.2.2 recommended by trauma101, thank you very smooth rom, no problems at all yet.
Once again thank you for saving me time of reading hundreads of threads about update.
Have a nice day !
If you end up having issues with Wifi/LTE, then make sure you're using the proper baseband (the unbricking instructions as linked loads the P936 baseband), if you're not then I suggest you load the P930 v20c baseband available at this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1842763
