[Q] What have I done to my phone?! URGENT - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi all! I'm new here so please refrain from flaming me...
I'm no noob to flashing the rom on my phone as I have successfully carried out the procedure multiple times. However, on this occasion things didn't go as planned. I began the procedure to update my S3 via odin to the new firmware that was released yesterday, however when the process got to 'system.img' the status bar just hung in the same place (just past the beginning of the bar) for a good 20 minutes... I panicked and unplugged my phone... BAD MOVE. I now get the error message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." and the only thing I can do is put my phone in odin mode, which I did, and tried to install the stock jelly bean rom, the exact same thing happened as before...
What should I do?
Thanks in advance

You tried to flash the stock firmware?

I don't believe we have that for our model.
If you can still get download mode there's hope, maybe not a lot in this case, but there is some.
Try to flash cwm or twrp via odin. If successful boot recovery and try to flash a stock rom. Hopefully it only screwed up the system partition. ...
Never unplug till odin says either PASS, FAIL, or RESET. You may end up really lucky this time. If its taking a long time, just leave the room.

Bad news... FAIL appears when I try...

Does it say fail when you try a full firmware flash?
Do you get any response at all when trying to boot recovery?

When I try a whole firmware flash it just hangs right after it starts, and when I tried to boot recovery (was that what was previously suggested?) it says fail...

I previously suggested trying to flash recovery only using odin. Before you just said you can only boot to download mode, so I was asking what does it do when you try to boot into recovery?

Oh right, my bad. When I try to boot into recovery the error screen saying to recover with Kies pops up.

Good news! I followed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905655 and I am now able to get into recovery mode. I guess my only option now is to wipe my data, install stock JB and everything should be ok?

Guys, even better news... That thread was the solution! My phone is now back to normal! I did lose a lot of pictures, but oh well, I'm glad I have my phone back to normal. Thanks for all your help! :good:

Wow! Ok, I am glad you got it working again, but you took a huge risk flashing that. Luckily its just the kernel aparently, but you should never flash anything from the international forum. More hard bricks have occured from flashing international stuff than anything else.
Just pointing this out so you or others reading this don't take it as meaning they can flash international roms and mods.
Glad it did work out for you though!

Thank you for the info! I keep that in mind so I don't run into any other problems. Now, I'm deciding whether I should try to install that firmware that caused the problem again... Even though I know what to do in the event that odin hangs, the results may not be the same... What do you think?
On a side note: It seems I only text messages and app settings, luckily I backed up my phone with Kies a few days ago so it's all good

Before you do, check under the battery so you are certain of the phone model. There are 3 variants if the T999, and they cannot flash each others firmware.
Also, I don't believe you mentioned which firmware you tried, or I missed it, but which was it?
And i said it before, but do not unplug during flash. It may seem to take forever if it hangs, but it will eventually Fail out if it does.

Okay, it's definitely the GT-I9300, and the firmware I tried to flash was this one from SamMobile:
GT-I9300 United Kingdom 2013 July 4.1.2 I9300XXEMG4 I9300OXAEMG4
And okay, it's just that it it hung for so long I thought "well, that's not right", panicked, then yeah, messed up my phone.

Ahhhh, well, I know now why it didn't brick your phone when you flsshed thst kernel! You do hsve the correct phone for that. So you will need to reverse what I told you and do not flsdh anything from this forum! Sorry for the confusion, I assumed you had a T999.
It sounds like you have the right firmware, but I know very little about the international models. They are very different than ours. You should definitely go to the International forum from here on. Very little info you get here will be relevant and you cannot use any of our roms or otherwise.
Good luck!

ye, it is tmobile version i am tired and made a typo - corrected thnks and gnite
my phone came with this firmware. is this just posted to revert to stock if on a custom rom or is there other significance?

So this must mean we can flash fash back to stock with odin if we have problems.
yup! this is our fall back ROM. now we need a triangle away to reset the counter!
It Works
I decided to be the test monkey on this one.
I had a nandroid backup of when I screwed my system so badly it just boot looped repeatedly. Restored that with cwm, verified it was still hosed, unpacked this zip, used odin to burn the .tar.md5 to the phone as PDA, rebooted.
It does some gear chunking while booting the first time then reboots - don't panic yet! On second boot it does some more rebuilding, then 'WELCOME!'
Bonus: CWM now sees the actual external sdcard as /sdcard and can find things like roms and backups on it. Edit: This CWM finds .zips on the sdcard, but doesn't seem to know how to backup/restore.
So is this for un rooting our phones?

After burning this with Odin I ended up with a CWM that I didn't expect - and I've never seen one that actually recognized the external card. However, with all the things I've been trying it's quite possible I ended up burning a boot image I forgot about. I need to try reburning this and see if anything changes, but can't do it right now.

Strange - I had kind of a weird experience with this. I flashed via Odin as usual (as I've done a 100x before) and when it rebooted, it still had remnants of the previous rom I had installed. I didn't get the "welcome" screen as if I was starting from a new factory rom. but at least it got me back to step 1 and I could flash the Lean 2.1 rom again to repair my screw ups.

[Q] HELP!!!! D2TMO encryption failure

1)make sure you try every port before freaking haha
2)make sure you use the original PDA from sam updates http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-T999
3) dont be afraid to ask for help haha

ok so last night I decided to try out the encryption option on my t mobile t999 and all went like it was supposed to. It rebooted a couple times like it said it would then when it rebooted to put in pin I entered the pin it started decrypting. I left it for 4 hours well it wouldn't work so I pulled battery and retried and left it go well it hung for hours. I proceeded to try a factory reset and it kept failing at the /data "cannot mount"... I tried wiping the internal SD it too failed. so now im trying to odin the "official stock" image it keeps getting hung at the "NOH-HLOS.bin" for HOURS anyone with anything please help me out
Can you boot into the system at all? If so can you install any apps?
Are you rooted?
If yes to all try Mobile Odin to flash, may be able to work around the problem....im not sure.
Otherwise try using goo or rom manager to install recovery and then flash another rom.
Not sure any of thatll work, just some suggestions.

I think what you mean to ask is, In download mode you get failed errors in Odin trying to flash a stock fw and encryption errors when flashing a rom via twrp. Post your pics of errors you are getting in the thread hopefully someone has an answer for you. iv'e been trying to help but im baffled, seems nothing will write to his internal on the phone. is this considered a brick even if you can still get into download mode or recovery?
EDIT: here are pics of errors twanskys204 is getting in odin and twrp. even after factory reset or wipes of caches from encryption error still no boot.

If your using a PIT file, tick "re-partition" in odin. It will 100% wipe the device. like factory. That should fix your error.

Edit sorry wrong question
Part of your problem is your flashing att firmware on a Canadian carrier phone. Try the right firmware. They are close, but not close enough.
Okay that being said. I can get into cwm. I see my external no internal. When I flash dagr8s rom it says complete and boots to Samsung splash screen then it gives me that encryption issue.. I'm at the point where I think I'm out of a note 2 but I don't know I'm 16 days into the purchase... Of well I guess this was an 800 dollar mistake on my part. No, the link is for a Captivate thread on encryption errors. It says that in the first sentence of the OP. The thread link is merely to help point you on a direction to start looking for what happened. It is not posted with the intent to offer a solution, merely more information.
Also, did you flash Canadian firmware on your Canadian phone, instead of Att firmware on your Canadian phone?
Ok first off in Odin. You only want that file in the PDA section.
Did you make a nandroid of your stock rooted before flashing dagr8's ROM? If so restore that. If not. Download a stock rooted one and get your phone working again.
What link did you DL his ROM from? Mine kept failing and had success from mirror 2
Also did you follow all the instruction about root??? It says make sure repartition isn't- IS NOT - checked!!!!
Edit: after rereading I see you were already rooted. If our can get to recovery. What about a data reset. Might work

Not that I know of. If you can get to download mode you are still OK. Can you get into recovery?
If you can this is the Att stock image recovery. This should be the only file you need to get back to a working phone. I didn't see one for bell/Rogers.

I got it from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1883823

Lost Recovery During Flash

I have the TMO S3. I was attempting to flash the latest Deviant Xone rom when this happened.
Ok, here's my Monday dilemma.
I just deleted the old file, and downloaded a fresh one (this new version). I had also went into recovery and had did a wipe of system and rom. I had just cleared the cache twice, when the TWRP screen popped up. The phone then rebooted, and only gets to the "deviant" boot screen.
I have tried to boot back into recovery, but it just gets to the TWRP screen, then reboots back to system, but still only gets to the deviant boot screen. I have done numerous battery pulls trying to get into recovery, but I think that for some reason, the phone has deleted my recovery.
Where do I go from here?

Yea, that's what I'm doing now. Just making sure I understand what I'm doing before I attempt to do it.
Ok, the first thing is when I connect to odin, the box that is supposed to be yellow is green. I still went ahead and did the procedure and it did say pass in the box. But the pc is not seeing the phone.
Also, when the phone rebooted, it rebooted to that Deviant boot screen still.

Vol up, power and home buttons. It does go to the recovery logo ( Teamwin ), but then reboots back to the deviant boot logo screen.
Odin CWM. If still happening, Odin stock rom.

That was it. For some reason, my phone wasn't accepting TWRP, but CWR worked. It's flashing the older version of Deviant now. Big Thanks to you and the others for your help. I'm still puzzled though why it would just delete itself like that though.
Could have definitely been the file then, wonder if that is a known thing with the ODIN twrp...

Not sure, but until I know, I'll stick with CWR though I like TWRP much better. Even so, I installed my original TWRP through Goo, and not through odin. I didn't do that until about 3 weeks after I rooted.

In any case, thanks to you as well. I've already flashed the latest Deviant, and in the process of reinstalling the apps through TB. Now my next quest is to try to find a stable kernel. I'm hoping that yesterday was the result of a bad download, as I did download the rom during that slow time goo.im was having. It took almost 45 minutes. It may have gotten corrupted during that extended period.

Ok, the first thing is when I connect to odin, the box that is supposed to be yellow is green. I still went ahead and did the procedure and it did say pass in the box. But the pc is not seeing the phone.

You are talking in circles, it's impossible for ODIN to display "PASS" if the pc is not recognizing your phone . LOL
I don't mean to be rude or anything but you are truly unbelievable and I don't believe anything you say.

First, if you would have read the posts, the issue was resolved.
Next, also if you would have read, you would have saw that I said the box that was supposed to be yellow. The pass box is never yellow, but the smaller one under it when you first connect.
Now I don't mean to be rude or anything, but maybe you should learn to read before commenting. There are any number of adult educational programs.

Yeah ignore this guy also. Head just going around trolling attempting to help solved issues, and bring up stuff that's irrelevant it seems.

I thought about it after I sent it, and really should have shot past him. Guess I was feeling kinda bold when I read it.

Hey fellow XDA-ers
Quick question. There are a lot of threads about ppl who have managed to get their SGH-T989D into "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in KIES & try again"
Lots of the response thread deal with either flashing the stock rom or another rom or a recovery or something. But that's not my question.
My question is this: Is data that was previously on the device still intact? I can tell you that no attempt to flash the device was made.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, as long as it happens while install is in progress u can get it back, most of the time what happens is a bad flash with Odin or still having kies running in background while using Odin, happened to me, like an idiot I moved, phone fell from desk and unplugged itself mid flash, I was able to flash twrp and when it rebooted it was right where I left it, contacts apps everything, now if ur flashing a rom with Odin maybe not as Odin wipes the phone when flashing a rom, but this mostly happens to ppl when trying to root and install a custom recovery, which is a very easy fix, maybe I'll post a how to.....
