[q] sgh-t989d - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey fellow XDA-ers
Quick question. There are a lot of threads about ppl who have managed to get their SGH-T989D into "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in KIES & try again"
Lots of the response thread deal with either flashing the stock rom or another rom or a recovery or something. But that's not my question.
My question is this: Is data that was previously on the device still intact? I can tell you that no attempt to flash the device was made.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, as long as it happens while install is in progress u can get it back, most of the time what happens is a bad flash with Odin or still having kies running in background while using Odin, happened to me, like an idiot I moved, phone fell from desk and unplugged itself mid flash, I was able to flash twrp and when it rebooted it was right where I left it, contacts apps everything, now if ur flashing a rom with Odin maybe not as Odin wipes the phone when flashing a rom, but this mostly happens to ppl when trying to root and install a custom recovery, which is a very easy fix, maybe I'll post a how to.....

Please help...Odin Fails on Recovery.bin

My name is Chris and I am a noob
I bought a used Galazy S2 Epic 4G Touch. As it turned out the phone was rooted and was running the Starburst rom. All day today I have spent reading about and trying to put this phone back to the stock firmware from sprint. I have tried the one-click odin installers and tried using odin and loading the PDA manually. Each and eveytime it fails on the recovery.bin. Can someone please help this noob out?
The phone will no longer boot up into the OS and states there was an issue with the firmware. However, I can boot into the download mode and the phone is recognized by odin. I have tried using a different USB cord, different USB ports, different computer running Windows XP....all with no luck. I would greatly appreciate any and all help.
Whenever you interrupt an ODIN flash it will give you that message until you get a clean flash of something. Sometimes you need a USB jig to get back into ODIN D/L mode, but it seems you are saying you already can get there.
Your flash memory is probably defective for the recovery.bin partition. It actually isn't used. Try flashing individually the modem, kernel, and ROM. If you look at the 2nd post of the ODIN One-Click posts, the individual tar files are provided.
Do you have the samsung drivers installed, I had a problem like that until I updated them..

If you want you can do a ##786# reset. This will clear your android user data and clear NVRAM. Your phone will reprovision itself at next boot. If the previous owner messed with the NVRAM though it might not always reset properly though.
If your phone is otherwise working now (ie provisioned) then I wouldn't bother clearing NVRAM and instead would just do a wipe data/factory reset from Recovery or do it from Privacy->Reset.
Flash a stock rom with efs clear checked in odin. This will reset the phone and OTA activate. Plus it will reset anything the previous user may have done with the nvram.

[Q] Help I think I bricked my phone!

My phone was constantly rebooting so i went into CWM and did a factory reset and it froze while wiping and since then it wouldnt reboot. I went to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551901&page=11 and followed the directions for the one click recovery using odin 1.81 but it stopped updating on the data.img. I kept it connected for over an hour. I disconnected the cable and rebooted the phone. now when i turn it on it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies and try again" i tried holding power and volume down and it briefly boots up but then goes to the firmware upgrade screen. Kies isnt recognizing the phone as being connected. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
you are not the first one today (yesterday) reporting the same problem. There were about 3~4 incidents reported during today. So, don't go further at this time. I hope some more Devs joining to give more helps.
During the time you are waiting, read the almost same case -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554392
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1549382
Also, please describe the full details about what you did and how you did -
where did not download the rom, what's your rom/kernel version before installing the rom, how did you proceed to odin the rom, etc...
You mentioned that you tried to flash the rom using the one click recovery using odin 1.81. Can you please be more details about this?
Before flashing the rom, you said that your phone was constantly rebooting. What was your rom and kernel at that time? Do you think there was anything suspicious causing the rebooting?
Maybe the solution would be simple but I saw many people reported same thing, there would be common issue in here. So, we need to find out what that is....
Sorry for not giving you the suggestion at this time.
This isn't an ODIN issue. ODIN is just the messenger in this case.
There is a problem between the ICS kernels and custom recovery where it will sometimes corrupt your /data partition if you reset/wipe/restore/format/etc. Any large partition operations are suspect. Copying files seems fine. It doesn't necessarily do it every time so it'll work for some but brick others. Even if it works a couple of times, it can brick at any time.
The EMMC memory actually becomes damaged and even JTAG repair will not fix. By the time you get to ODIN the damage is already done. ODIN won't be able to write to /data even using a .pit file with repartition set, ODIN one-click won't write to it, CWM will hang writing to it, JTAG will have issues also.
Your best bet is to get a replacement.
There are multiple threads about this, which is why people suggest you go back to a GB-based kernel+CWM to do your ROM flashing.
This is one thread where the data.img corruption is discussed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504808
Well i tried QBKings how to unbrick video and used the stock el29 stock rom through odin. It looks like it was going to work. it finished all the way but now it just gets stuck in a boot screen loop

Maybe try using odin to flash a kernel with recovery, and get into recovery before it reboots(or pull battery since it won't boot after odin is done doing its thing). then restore a nandroid, or flash a Rom?

Adding to this, I personally recommend to format the sdcard before installing anythig - there's a option to format sdcard.

In recovery, factory reset. Then reboot and it should work fine.
Stock recovery will wipe your internal sdcard.

Mr. Doc I so appreciate you!!! First time posting to thread and Im grateful of your timely response. Let me just tell you exactly whats going on
my phone is in the android system recovery what I am seeing is green android man with a red warning over top of it. it will not let me do anything and I see a message saying "MANUAL MODE" successfully applied multi CSC. It won't connect to ODIN OR Kies Im so scared that I have ruined my phone crying very hard
Odin doesn't work unless you're in download mode.
What happens when you reboot? If it takes you to recovery, boot into download mode (power+vol down+home) and flash a stock image.

Also this happened after I flashed the pure stock then I flashed the recovery and the phone automatically went to what I have explained in prior post
When the phone is recovery it doesn't let me do anything factory/reset or anything and when i put in download mode it doesn't connect to ODIN
What rom were you previously using? And you do have a T999L right? You won't be able odin flash any stock firmware because there isn't any.
Try again to get into download mode. If you can boot recovery you should be able to get there too I'd imagine.
Hold volume down and home while powering up.
If you can do this, odin flash either cwm from aerowinders sig, or twrp from mine. Then reflash whichever rom you were running before trying the pure stock rom.

Hello I'm a she lol but what originally happened was I rooted phone through Odin. Then when I looked in Twrp and cwm it kept saying i had no recovery image. I went through thread on here and saw someone with same issue and follow Mr. Doc's instructions pertaining to the pure stock and recovery and this is where i landed. Im in download mode so yes i see my phone is not ruined lol I just need the file Mr. Doc is telling me about to reflash because im now connected to odin. I had to use another computer. I greatly appreciate all the time taken to help me get my phone back to working order. Since I am new I need to find the place where I can give a lot of Kudos to mr doc and his team now all i need is where to i go for mr doc file
In my signature, click Recoveries. Then in the twrp folder download version 2.5.0.0. Get the one that's a .tar.
Then once connected to odin, click the PDA button and select the tar file you just downloaded. Then click start.
Once done it should auto reboot. Now reboot into recovery and try doing a factory reset there.
If you still can't boot after that, flash the other, deodexed rom from my T999L thread.
I've got to go for a bit but will try to jump back on soon to see how you're doing.

Neither CWM or TWRP have added support yet, though it should be as simple as asking. Ill try to contract them in a bit.
You can manually install any of the latest recoveries for the T999 though. They have been confirmed working by several people.
Are you familiar with Odin? I suggest going to the Recoveries link in my sig and get TWRP version 2.5.0.0. The one you want has the .tar extension.
Then flash that in Odin.
If you aren't comfortable with Odin I can tell you another way using terminal emulator.
Your phone does currently have a recovery, but unless you've installed a custom one its still stock.
Also, you can flash any of the Roms posted for the T999. If the rom doesn't include a kernel, and it touchwiz based, you can flash one of the kernels in my T999L thread in development section. I'd try the MD5 kernel first so its matched with the Touchwiz rom you choose. (If you flash CM or AOSP based roms, do not use the kernels I just mentioned).
Hope that helps!

Cant factory reset, change ROM, or ODIN takes no effect

Hi there, i am currently on the CM10.1.2 build. Phone works, but started getting weird problems on the ROM lately so i decided to try to clean flash the rom again through clockword recovery v5. After doing the usual factory reset, wipe cache, re flashing, etc. After restarting the phone, nothing i did seemed to take effect. So I tried the same thing with a a differnt ROM, noticed that doing the factory reset only lasted like 3 seconds, when usually it takes about 10-20 seconds. So at this point, i tried to ODIN back to stock 4.1. Phone passed through but took zero effect.. I have no idea what to do at this point,
other weird symptoms that my phone had were; automatically turning on when USB plugged in.
Has anyone experienced this, could it be my clockword recovery is corrupted, but even so, ODIN should be able to work..

Or better yet, use TWRP 2.5.0.0 tar from here:

First try using PDA to flash in Odin. PDA is the only thing I use in Odin for the Hercules.
ill try that now,
also, after a RR(random reboot) earlier today, a message popped up sayig; system error; you need to re partition or partition your phone, and some other error. There is a re-partition option in Odin, but i have no idea what it does and dont want to accidently brick my phone.
Any thoughts on that

Never had that error, but I have read that checking re-partition can brick(hard brick?) your phone. So I would not mess with that option until you do some research about it first.
so i tried flashing the CWM6 through PDA, no luck, then tried flashing it through CWM5, no good either.
and i might have to look into the re partition thing, it might be a potential solution. if anyone else has any knowledge or similar problems, please help me out, running out of ideas
edit: is there a way to go back to stock via kies, or is that only for non-rooted phones

Never check that option, it will seriously damage ur phone if it even boots after, ur best bet is to go with twrp, it a better recovery and has all the newest flashing scripts, try using Odin and PDA to flash the tar file from the link above, I've never seen a phone tell me to repartition it before that's strange bit I wouldn't suggest it, twrp by far has never failed me yet as cwm is rarely updated so sometimes u get errors with new roms

I've always used 1.85 ,don't think I've even used another version as its always worked for me, have u tried loading the tar file into PDA slot, not boot loader, I never touch boot loader, click PDA and try to odin the file from there, and move to twrp, its better, if that doesn't work I'm lost, but I'll help as much as I can, how about flashing a ROM, does that work or does that not take too? This is interesting, it sucks for u I know but I've never had an issue like this before...

Really?? I did hear they were supposed to find a fix for it but they never did.. does it matter that the phone is rooted? Because I have no way of uprooting at this point.
Def a hardware problem though so no reciept or anything should be nessesary I'd think?

[Q] What have I done to my phone?! URGENT

Hi all! I'm new here so please refrain from flaming me...
I'm no noob to flashing the rom on my phone as I have successfully carried out the procedure multiple times. However, on this occasion things didn't go as planned. I began the procedure to update my S3 via odin to the new firmware that was released yesterday, however when the process got to 'system.img' the status bar just hung in the same place (just past the beginning of the bar) for a good 20 minutes... I panicked and unplugged my phone... BAD MOVE. I now get the error message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." and the only thing I can do is put my phone in odin mode, which I did, and tried to install the stock jelly bean rom, the exact same thing happened as before...
What should I do?
Thanks in advance
You tried to flash the stock firmware?

Is this the thread called 'Welcome to your device, the Galaxy S III'? If not, I'd appreciate it if a link can be provided to this thread.

I don't believe we have that for our model.
If you can still get download mode there's hope, maybe not a lot in this case, but there is some.
Try to flash cwm or twrp via odin. If successful boot recovery and try to flash a stock rom. Hopefully it only screwed up the system partition. ...
Never unplug till odin says either PASS, FAIL, or RESET. You may end up really lucky this time. If its taking a long time, just leave the room.

Thanks for your help so far guys... I'm going to try that now... I'll keep you posted...
Bad news... FAIL appears when I try...
Does it say fail when you try a full firmware flash?
Do you get any response at all when trying to boot recovery?

When I try a whole firmware flash it just hangs right after it starts, and when I tried to boot recovery (was that what was previously suggested?) it says fail...
I previously suggested trying to flash recovery only using odin. Before you just said you can only boot to download mode, so I was asking what does it do when you try to boot into recovery?

Oh right, my bad. When I try to boot into recovery the error screen saying to recover with Kies pops up.
Good news! I followed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905655 and I am now able to get into recovery mode. I guess my only option now is to wipe my data, install stock JB and everything should be ok?
Guys, even better news... That thread was the solution! My phone is now back to normal! I did lose a lot of pictures, but oh well, I'm glad I have my phone back to normal. Thanks for all your help! :good:
Wow! Ok, I am glad you got it working again, but you took a huge risk flashing that. Luckily its just the kernel aparently, but you should never flash anything from the international forum. More hard bricks have occured from flashing international stuff than anything else.
Just pointing this out so you or others reading this don't take it as meaning they can flash international roms and mods.
Glad it did work out for you though!

Thank you for the info! I keep that in mind so I don't run into any other problems. Now, I'm deciding whether I should try to install that firmware that caused the problem again... Even though I know what to do in the event that odin hangs, the results may not be the same... What do you think?
On a side note: It seems I only text messages and app settings, luckily I backed up my phone with Kies a few days ago so it's all good

Before you do, check under the battery so you are certain of the phone model. There are 3 variants if the T999, and they cannot flash each others firmware.
Also, I don't believe you mentioned which firmware you tried, or I missed it, but which was it?
And i said it before, but do not unplug during flash. It may seem to take forever if it hangs, but it will eventually Fail out if it does.

Okay, it's definitely the GT-I9300, and the firmware I tried to flash was this one from SamMobile:
GT-I9300 United Kingdom 2013 July 4.1.2 I9300XXEMG4 I9300OXAEMG4
And okay, it's just that it it hung for so long I thought "well, that's not right", panicked, then yeah, messed up my phone.

Ahhhh, well, I know now why it didn't brick your phone when you flsshed thst kernel! You do hsve the correct phone for that. So you will need to reverse what I told you and do not flsdh anything from this forum! Sorry for the confusion, I assumed you had a T999.
It sounds like you have the right firmware, but I know very little about the international models. They are very different than ours. You should definitely go to the International forum from here on. Very little info you get here will be relevant and you cannot use any of our roms or otherwise.
Good luck!
