[Q] Modem flash Dirty Unicorns - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm getting ready to flash my first rom. I'm going to flash Dirty Unicorns. It calls for a modem other then a GB. I'm currently running stock rooted GB28 (Virgin Mobile). I also have JB Kernel + Agat's tRec for SPH-D710 for recovery. I've downloaded a Virgin mobile modem (fj12) from Rwilco12's Android Repository. Do I flash the modem and update prl and profile before flashing Dirty Unicorns? It's my understanding that you can't do that from a aokp rom. I've done a lot of reading over the past month and can't find the answer to this.....thank....john

If I am not mistaken, your steps should be as follow's:
1. Use the one-click (FJ12)
2. Let phone reboot
3. Reboot into recovery
4. Flash ROM
The one-click will put you on the correct modem so there is no prbs when you flash the ROM. Update PRL and profile after you install the ROM. I haven't been on a AKOP ROM, but that is the way it is done on the sprint. Try it either way. You have the one-click to get you back to square one. You should also have the one-click to get you back on GB28 if you want/need to go back. Make you a folder and store ALL phone related materials there. It will be easier to find things later.

ics modem
It is my understanding that as long as I'm on stock 4.1.2 that I can flash a ics modem without any issues. Could someone confirm this for me?

Do I need to go back to stock?

Hey,
So since the OTA update has just been announced for EK02... if I am rooted on a custom ROM, do I need to go back to unrooted stock in order to receive it? Or should I just wait for someone to make a .tar of it? What are you guys doing with this news here now?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
stock
mrush, I think it depends on how fast you want to get to EK02 to fix any LoS or hotspot issues (see notes on Sprint site). You can go back to stock and let the OTA proceed in the next 10 days (which means you will have Carrier IQ again - if you care). That's a negative for me. Otherwise, you can wait for the XDA developers to update their kernels and ROMs, which they will start to do, with the EK02 kernel and modem updates over the next few weeks (with Carrier IQ removed).
Ok thats wwhat I was thinking I would do. I do not want carrier IQ and I want to go straight to Calks version of ek02 but once they are able to pull the modem and get it put in place of EG31.

There is experimental Disabling of CIQ on EK02 w/o requiring a custom ROM flash here:
[ROOT][NCIQ][EG30/EG31/EK02] Auto root your existing stock ROM (w/o ODIN/ROM Flash)
I'll be waiting for a custom version, no spying on me!
On Calk 2.0 and EG30 modem and confused.
What exactly is the new update that Sprint is rolling out for the Epic 4G Touch? A new modem EK02? What about the stock rom itself? Some minor tweak? What if I had no LOS to start with?
I was on stock rom, and then rooted with shfub's method. I then install EG30+CWM so no change in my modem. I then backup and then flashed Calk 2.0 ROM. I did not do the new 2.01a zip which if I understand correctly, upgrades the modem to EK02. According to Calkulin, his 2.01a rom includes the following:
Based on rooted 2.3.6 / EK02
ROM includes:
Rogue kernel
Most Samsung apps
EStrongs File Explorer
HTC_IME mod keyboard
ICS keyboard
Wireless Tether
Busybox
and a couple more
Is Rogue kernel just stock kernel with custom recovery?
I flashed Calk 2.0 and this is what I have:
Android 2.3.6
Baseband version: s: D710.10 S.EG30 (so I still have the original stock modem?)
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EK02-CL704398
Build number Calkulin's E4GT ROM v2.0
My questions are:
If I have no issue with LOS, do I need to install Calk 2.01a?
Will my phone automatically update to the new one that Sprint is pushing out?(assuming new modem and new stock rom)
Will I lose root or brick my phone if the phone does that?
Can I just flash an EK02 modem on top of my current Calk 2.0 or wipe everything and install Calk 2.01a if I want to upgrade to EK02 modem? I am not sure I want to do that unless 3G data speed is improve.
I thought I was clear on ROM packaging the kernel and modem together but now I see that you can have one ROM and flash different kernel and modem.
Please correct any of my misunderstanding above.
Thank You.

[Q] Question about EG30, 31 EK02 and EL13

I am currently running Calk's rom 2.5 that was "based off EL13 build." My kernel version in about phone says: "2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EL13-CL806482. and build is "Calkulin's E4GT Rom v2.5."
But my Baseband version says S:d710.10 S.EG30. Am I able to upgrade my baseband version to EL13 or does Calk's rom already do that for me?
Thanks in advance for any help

You can flash the EL13 modem in CWM using the appropriate CWM MDM link in my signature.
I am in a similar situation. I currently have:
Android 2.3.4
Baseband: S710.10 S.EG30
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EG30-CL435734
ROM: midNIGHT ROM v2.2 NOCIQ ET4G
I want to install this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
How would I go about doing this? I know how to use ODIN to flash stuff, also know how to use Clockwork to flash from phone, but I'm a newbie in this area and I don't want to brick my phone.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Just use CWM and flash the ROM. It'll install the ROM and the kernel. You can flash your radio at a later point from CWM also.
On the thread of the ROM I want, it says:
"Important Notes - Due to how this ROM is setup, a wipe is recommended BEFORE flashing if coming from another ROM(use FORMAT ALL attached)"
Does this mean that before installing the ROM I need to format the whole phone (minus the SD card)?
Thank you for your help!

The Modem, Kernel, and ROM are separate entities. This thread started off talking about modems, but now you are switching to talking about a ROM. Just wanted to clarify that in case things are getting mixed up.
If the ROM says you need to FORMAT all, that usually means if you are coming from a different ROM, you should do that. If you are upgrading from one version of that ROM to another, usually you won't need to format all, but sometimes you might. Ask your question on the ROM-specific discussion thread.
Thank you for your help. I tried to post on the ROM post but I couldn't due to being a passive user and the Development forums requiring a certain number of posts.
I backed up EVERYTHING with MyBackup Pro just now and I will format ALL, format cache, dalvik-cache, anything that says "erase" on CWM I will do ... and I'll report back with how it all went.
Thank you again for your helpful post.
Hey guys. New guy here to rooting. Thanks to sfhub my first attempt was a success.
This is my current set up.
android 2.3.6
baseband s:d710s.ek02
kernel 2.6.35.7-sph-d710.ek02-cl704398
Rom New Senzation v1.7.
I also want to run Caulks' rom but I am not sure if I can on the ek02 modem. Would I have to flash to el13 to be able to use this rom?
Sorry if the terminologies are wrong still trying to get used to and understand all of this.

Even though theoretically it is best to keep the Modem, Kernel, and ROM matched since they were tested together, in practice folks haven't had issues with mix and matching. Now with CWM flashable FULL modems for EG30/EG31/EK02/EL13, it is very easy to switch after the ROM flash. Just make sure your kernel is based off the newer EK02/EL13 to flash the FULL modems.

What do you want to revert? Modem, Kernel, ROM, or all three?
If all three, the easiest is to use the EG30 ODIN tar in my signature then apply the EK02 update immediately afterwards.

[Q] Different Modem for CM9 A2

Hey guys!
This is my first post on XDA, though I've been creeping on these forums for years rooting my Orginal Gangster G1 and my Epic 4g. I recently just got the E4GT and I love it.
Obviously the first thing I did after charging it up was start getting it rooted and etc. So started on stock EL29, and with using all of QBking77's great videos, I rooted it with One-Click Root, got recovery on it, then did the whole process of getting CM9 Alpha 2 on my phone. Everything went perfectly and its running smoothly!
But now the question is how can I change my modem? I'm assuming EL29 is from Gingerbread and the F*xx's are ICS (if not just the latest F's?). But regardless of what they there, is it possible to change my modem WITHOUT going back to stock with the One Click root/restore, and then flashing a new modem, and then going through the whole process of installing CM9 again?
If there isn't, could someone please tell me what the most effective and safe way is to change my modem on CM9 is? And what is the general consensus on which modem is the best running with CM9. FC24, FD05, etc?
Thanks for the help in advance! It feels good to finally post!
If you really wanted to you could start fresh and install the modem along with CM9 again.
But most people will tell you to ODIN an EL26+CWM kernel and boot to recovery when it reboots, flash the modem, and then flash the kernel that comes with CM9. Its an easy process.
If I'm wrong, someone feel free to correct me
EDIT: Modems really are hit and miss for me. I suggest just taking a couple days and testing them out to see which one works best for you.
Just to make sure I have this right:
1. Odin the EL26+CWM kernal, just like I did to flash CM9.
2. Boot in to recovery, after Odin is finished.
3. Flash the modem through recovery. From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352310
4. Then flash the CM9 kernel.
5. And we are good to go?
Question is by flashing the CM9 Kernel do you just mean flashing the Rom zip (cm-update-9 blah blah), or is there a separate kernel file.
That's all correct except for the fact that there should be a separate kernel that you can flash for CM9. I'm not sure about all that so you might want to ask around about that. Just make sure you don't flash a TouchWiz kernel, as CM9 requires an AOSP one.
EDIT: Just looked at the link and make sure that the modem you flash is in CWM .zip format. You don't use tars in CWM.
You can also get mobile Odin from the play store and flash a modem (.tar file, can be found on Calk's ICS 1.4 thread) through that.

That's the method I use. Most people don't want to pay for the app. 100% worth it though.
Another easy method
A free method is to download Odin to your PC, put the .tar file into the Phone slot, hook up your phone in download mode and flash it from there, easy as pie.
Edit: Don't forget to leave only automatic reboot checked in Odin.

This.
Its late here and I wasn't thinking straight. My method had so many extra steps it wasn't funny. I can officially say my badddd.
The extra steps are worth the experience

So I can just flash the modem through odin? Awesome. Do they have the .tar's for all the modems? Or just some of them? And what's the risk of flashing it from Odin compared to method of doing a completely clean install with a different modem?

Clearing up a couple things:
1) Last I checked you cannot flash modems from Mobile ODIN on this phone. I am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, such as Epix4G...
2) Calk's ROM threads usually contain a list of all modem TAR files so that they can be upgraded.
3) Modems need to be flashed through ODIN as far as I understood. But whether or not you should revert to EL26 before flashing? I can give the CW advice of going back to EL26 (better safe than sorry IMO), but hopefully a person experienced with CM9 can give you better advice on this.
I'm running CM9 A2, and I've been keeping up with the latest modems using Odin. The beauty of it is that it is almost completely risk-free, no need to revert to EL26. Calks E4GT ICS thread has all the modem .tar files in the OP, flash away.
No offense meant, but we are talking about modems, not kernels, right?

Updating to ICS roms

Hey everyone,
About 4 months ago when I got my new Epic 4g touch I rooted the phone with autoroot and installed calkulins rom which I now have at version 2.6. I am also using an ICS theme. What do I now have to do in order to get the newest modem and custom ICS roms installed on my phone? Since autoroot is no longer functional I have heard that I will have to install the stock rom and modem on my phone and then use odin to install new modems.... Is this the case? Does anyone have links to stock roms and modems I should use before I proceed into using Odin?
Thanks!

You have few options:
1. If you want latest stock rooted rom just flash sfhubs one click FF18 rooted rom from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
2. If you want any of the custom TW (stock based) roms read thru threads, see which one you like most download the rom and copy to your sd card.
Boot to recovery. Wipe/factory reset (you're on GB rom and you're not risking to brick your phone) and apply zip in recovery.
Rom will flash kernel as well and you will have rooted ICS rom on your phone.
Download CWM modem zip file from sfhub's thread and flash it in recovery as well.
3. If you want AOSP/AOKP/CM rom just read the installation instructions in OP and follow them.
If you have more questions, ask....
Thanks!!
So sprint plugged the autoroot feature but I am still able to download any ICS rom on my current setup (after full wipe) and install through my CWM and it will work? I am on the EK02 modem, I am able to upgrade to ICS modems without using Odin?
if you have custom recovery you can flash CWM modem zip from sfhubs tread in recovery.
If you don't have custom recovery use sfhubs autoroot package to flash EK02 kernel with CWM recovery and than flash rom and modem in recovery.
Sprint din't include anything for us. It's all done by a great developer sfhub.
With Sasmung devices and their ODIN support, you aren't really required to have root to flash anything. In other devices(HTC), you need to have a exploit to root them so that you have Read/write access to certain partitions that you wouldn't normally, thus allowing you to flash.

[Q] ROM Kernel modem Flash order

Is there a proper order of operations when flashing a rom, kernel and modem at the same time? if it matters im currently running FL16 rom and modem. im going back to FF18. I know to use a safe recovery. Odin on PC is not an option. Thanks in advance.

Kernel/Recovery, Modem, ROM in my opinion. You can do the first one in Mobile Odin Free to avoid any issues - one of Agat's repacks (any up to FI27 will do) - then just get a ROM & Modem.
If you're willing to pay for Mobile Odin Pro it can do a one click minus the modem. That can be done easily afterwards by doing Agat's repack in Mobile Odin and then flashing the modem.
If you're going back to ICS I recommend going back to FI27 though.
