Why do you have to flash to a stock rom before moving to a custom rom? If I want to install Viper 5.0 on EB13, why do I have to go to stock EB13 first? Just curious. If I flash to the stock EB13, does that change the modem to EB13? I'm on DK28 now with Viper Trinity 2.0 and want to try 5.0...Why can't I just do the wipe 3 times and then flash the custom rom? I just want to understand this is all.
Thanks,
Kevin
Its worth a try.... if it doesn't boot you'll have to odin anyway. Wipe everything 3x each and flash your rom and see if it fixes it. Also, you can always flash different modems with odin.

Sure, but that doesn't really get to the root of my question. When I went from EC05 stock to DK28 ViperRom, why did I have to flash to the stock DK28? what significance does this have?

It is probably due to the modem compatibility and support files. Most ROMs include all support and stock files needed but may remove bloatware. Some check for modem and will install the needed modem, others not. For EB13 and EC05 ROMs the support files and data are compatible but not necessarily with DK28 since that was an early leak.
As mentioned, back up your stuff and you can always try without Odin'ing first and if you get no errors you are good to go.
you dont have too., you could just odin the modem, and flash the rom... unless you have to change from rfs to ext4 or vice versa
Hey guys!
This is my first post on XDA, though I've been creeping on these forums for years rooting my Orginal Gangster G1 and my Epic 4g. I recently just got the E4GT and I love it.
Obviously the first thing I did after charging it up was start getting it rooted and etc. So started on stock EL29, and with using all of QBking77's great videos, I rooted it with One-Click Root, got recovery on it, then did the whole process of getting CM9 Alpha 2 on my phone. Everything went perfectly and its running smoothly!
But now the question is how can I change my modem? I'm assuming EL29 is from Gingerbread and the F*xx's are ICS (if not just the latest F's?). But regardless of what they there, is it possible to change my modem WITHOUT going back to stock with the One Click root/restore, and then flashing a new modem, and then going through the whole process of installing CM9 again?
If there isn't, could someone please tell me what the most effective and safe way is to change my modem on CM9 is? And what is the general consensus on which modem is the best running with CM9. FC24, FD05, etc?
Thanks for the help in advance! It feels good to finally post!
If you really wanted to you could start fresh and install the modem along with CM9 again.
But most people will tell you to ODIN an EL26+CWM kernel and boot to recovery when it reboots, flash the modem, and then flash the kernel that comes with CM9. Its an easy process.
If I'm wrong, someone feel free to correct me
EDIT: Modems really are hit and miss for me. I suggest just taking a couple days and testing them out to see which one works best for you.
Just to make sure I have this right:
1. Odin the EL26+CWM kernal, just like I did to flash CM9.
2. Boot in to recovery, after Odin is finished.
3. Flash the modem through recovery. From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352310
4. Then flash the CM9 kernel.
5. And we are good to go?
Question is by flashing the CM9 Kernel do you just mean flashing the Rom zip (cm-update-9 blah blah), or is there a separate kernel file.
That's all correct except for the fact that there should be a separate kernel that you can flash for CM9. I'm not sure about all that so you might want to ask around about that. Just make sure you don't flash a TouchWiz kernel, as CM9 requires an AOSP one.
EDIT: Just looked at the link and make sure that the modem you flash is in CWM .zip format. You don't use tars in CWM.
You can also get mobile Odin from the play store and flash a modem (.tar file, can be found on Calk's ICS 1.4 thread) through that.

That's the method I use. Most people don't want to pay for the app. 100% worth it though.
Another easy method
A free method is to download Odin to your PC, put the .tar file into the Phone slot, hook up your phone in download mode and flash it from there, easy as pie.
Edit: Don't forget to leave only automatic reboot checked in Odin.

Its late here and I wasn't thinking straight. My method had so many extra steps it wasn't funny. I can officially say my badddd.
The extra steps are worth the experience

So I can just flash the modem through odin? Awesome. Do they have the .tar's for all the modems? Or just some of them? And what's the risk of flashing it from Odin compared to method of doing a completely clean install with a different modem?

Clearing up a couple things:
1) Last I checked you cannot flash modems from Mobile ODIN on this phone. I am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, such as Epix4G...
2) Calk's ROM threads usually contain a list of all modem TAR files so that they can be upgraded.
3) Modems need to be flashed through ODIN as far as I understood. But whether or not you should revert to EL26 before flashing? I can give the CW advice of going back to EL26 (better safe than sorry IMO), but hopefully a person experienced with CM9 can give you better advice on this.
I'm running CM9 A2, and I've been keeping up with the latest modems using Odin. The beauty of it is that it is almost completely risk-free, no need to revert to EL26. Calks E4GT ICS thread has all the modem .tar files in the OP, flash away.
No offense meant, but we are talking about modems, not kernels, right?
Mobile ODIN didn't flash the FD05 Modem that I gave it.
It rebooted, looked as if there was some progress going on, then booted back into the OS. My baseband shows FC24 as it did before and works fine.
Has there been any kind of corruption done to the kernel or modem on the phone? (All I gave it to flash was a modem.)

It's a known issue with Mobile Odin. For whatever reason when flashing modems for a CDMA phone the change doesn't stick. Chainfire is currently working on a fix for it.
In the meantime the work around is to flash through recovery.
Here's the FD05 on a zip format for you.

I believe the only way to get the kernel is to flash the actual rom itself. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

As of yet I have not come across the FD05 kernel alone. I myself am running straight FD02 kernel and modem. I was running the FD05 modem but it was giving me issues so I went back to FD02.
Sorry!

You can just use Auto Root (includes all the kernels) or Mobile ODIN to install any kernel version.
Hi all, I've been reading a lot of threads around here about safely flashing our phone. I'd like to verify somethings before I go around flashing things.
It is my understanding that its ok to go from any rom to any rom using sfhubs odin oneclick methods. Is this correct?
It is also my understanding that I can flash any rom (unless otherwise stated) from CWM recovery safely if I am back to EL26+CWM using ODIN.
I have some confusion about this. Currently I am on a stock EL29 unrooted build, if I want to flash an ICS rom would I flash the EL26+CWM tar via ODIN and then use CWM to wipe and flash ICS? Is it also required that I flash an applicable kernel along with the rom?
Also I have never used odin before. Do I need to install this program from somewhere first before I can flash things?
Do I need to root my existing EL29 setup before I can flash the EL26+CWM tar?
Sorry for the huge number of noob questions, I just don't want to take chances with my phone. I'm an HTC guy and things seem to be done very very differently there. I'm very interested in trying the upcoming date to the Blend ICS "The Goodness" rom.

1. Yes as long ad you get into download mode
2. Yes
3. Yes but usually roms come with a kernel that works already, check OP for each
4. Yes get either mobile Odin from the market or get it on ur PC (best to have both)
5. Yes you have to be rooted to flash anything

The best advice I can give you is to look up qbking77 on youtube. He has step by step how to videos on rooting and flashing your E4GT.

He has a link in the description on how to add CWM
Ill tell ya right now I would not recommend flashing an ICS rom it is soo buggy I hate it! I just installed the tablet one I forget what it is called but nothing but force closes even when ya aint doing anything it will just force close on ya. Stick with gingerbread untill there is a final release for ics trust me. Way to buggy right now!
I must agree with RB!
I would not mess with ICS if you are new to this phone (and even some that are not ). If you really like your phone, I would recommend trying out the many Gingerbread roms for a while. It is a much safer and far more stabile learning platform than ICS.
As far as flashing ICS I would check out one of the official leaked builds before trying out a custom ROM. I've noticed that some people seem to have different problems even though we all have the same phone. The changes from GB to ICS were enough to drive me nuts sometimes, but I've been using the leaked builds with minimal problems for the last few weeks. The newest one is FE10 and is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1648045
I have to say I take back what I said I was getting all those force closes but then I did another factory data reset and now it is running smooth and I am LOVING ICS!!! You should check out the Hydra Rom by team Venum it is soo sick! It makes your phone like a tablet!!!
True you can use either Odin or Mobile Odin (and it is best to have both). But I find Mobile Odin much more convenient. I always keep an the EL26+CWM tar and an ICS Tar (Kernals) on my phone at all times. It is much safer to do anything on the EL26 kernal such as wiping, flashing, nanding, and etc. Even if you are on an ICS rom you can Mobile Odin to the EL26 kernal flash whatever you want, and lastly flash back to an ICS kernal and reboot. That is about as safe as you can be. Like the other posters said though try out some GB roms first there are many great developers, and these roms generally have far less risk associated with them. I am currently running Epic Venum Rom and it is great. Happy flashing!
Yea ya see sometimes when people ask for opinions on here I say try it yourself because its different for everyone. My battery life compared to yours and my user experience compared to yours. I am on Codename and have 0 issues and honestly dont even need an upgrade. I could rock this ICS till my next phone.
Hey OP do yourself a favor read yo ass off up in here and please please please follow directions to the "t" and just try out a few roms

LMAO RB. You're really gonna confuse the guy now.
Thanks for all the informative responses all. I think I mostly have this down now.
I rooted my stock build with sfhub's odin OC, then used sfhub's autorooting utility to flash EL26+CWM. Got into CWM and wiped everything a few times and then flashed Blu Kuban ICS.
Now that I tried this, if I want to try a different rom should I just Odin OC back to my rooted EL29 build and repeat the process or would it suffice to just use the autorooting utility, flash EL26+CWM and then flash my new rom?
Can anyone recommend me an ICS rom that is fairly similar to a stock ICS experience? It doesn't have to be CM9 or AOKP. I'm just tired of Samsung's cartoony icons and themes. "The goodness" seemed interesting.
Also what is the best Gingerbread rom around here in case I decide to stick to that? Any that are themed like ICS?
Also if I wanted to, I could go from my blu kuban ICS rom straight to FE10 using the Odin OC safely right?

Thanks for the help all. I settled on tFE10_v0.1.0, a tweaked version of the FE10 leak. It's also skinned to look like stock ICS and I'm using it with the ICS launcher instead of TW.
Smooth, stable and good battery life so far. I'm quite happy with it.

Odin OC back to EL29. It is HIGHLY recommended that you not flash GB kernels on ICS roms, so flashing EL26 from ICS is not ideal. Insofar as rom i was on goodness until just recently, which is great, but recently switched to AOKP build 35, which is AMAZING

I would just flash el26+cwm from mobile odin/odin and boot into recovery. Once there just wipe and flash like you did for Blu Kuban. You don't have to go back to GB ROM, just need el26+cwm. As stated above it is unsafe to flash to el26+cwm using ICS recovery, but is safe to Odin/Mobile Odin to it. I always have stockel26cwm.tar, an AOSP kernel, a stock ICS kernel, and whatever ROMs I'm currently using. I also always have Mobile Odin and Root Explorer installed.

Wow you just saved me a whole lot of time. This whole time I was under the impression you had to odin back to Gingerbread rooted, reinstall CWM before flashing another ICS rom. I never knew you just needed the el26 kernal! Thank you! Quick question though what slot do you put the kernal in the PDA?
Here's a direct link to the stock el26+cwm: http://db.tt/0QJkleJR
I believe you use PDA slot. I use Mobile Odin as I'm always at work and never near a computer. I do believe there is a free lite version on these forums somewhere or its $4.99 on Play Store, but it is a huge time saver as I flash a new ROM several times a week at least(currently addicted to HyDrA).

thanks kill, i was odin OC back to EL29 before each flash, i will adopt your method going forward, i should have realized this a long time ago...
No problem. Just trying to save you some time/effort. One more thing though since I don't think it was ever mentioned. You should always verify the md5 checksum before flashing anything. There are free apps on the Play store to check with and most developers post a checksum by there downloads.

If I am not mistaken, your steps should be as follow's:
1. Use the one-click (FJ12)
2. Let phone reboot
3. Reboot into recovery
4. Flash ROM
The one-click will put you on the correct modem so there is no prbs when you flash the ROM. Update PRL and profile after you install the ROM. I haven't been on a AKOP ROM, but that is the way it is done on the sprint. Try it either way. You have the one-click to get you back to square one. You should also have the one-click to get you back on GB28 if you want/need to go back. Make you a folder and store ALL phone related materials there. It will be easier to find things later.
ics modem
It is my understanding that as long as I'm on stock 4.1.2 that I can flash a ics modem without any issues. Could someone confirm this for me?
