Dumbest Question Ever!!

Hello all,
I have had a couple of smartphones and I've asked a couple of questions on xda about various things regarding those phones. I just recently upgraded my work phone to the ET4G and I love the phone but hate the battery life and hotspot restrictions. I have no clue how to flash roms but I'm not totally clueless, I can follow directions. Can someone tell me or point me in the right direction as to how I install a custom rom on my phone. I want to install Calk N Venums Stock Rom but I manually installed ICS 4.0.4 because Sprint took forever to roll out the update. Not sure if the process was similar to me going into bootloader and unziping the file, etc. Long story short, I need to know what I need to have preinstalled on the phone so that I don't brick it (Clockwork Recovery, etc.). The devs have done a great jump with these roms and I am very interested in trying some out given I know the proper steps. Thanks for any and all advice.

Really not a dumb question...at least you are approaching this with caution and there is a ton of information out there so it can be very intimidating and discouraging.

Yes. I began to read with delight about all the features and benefits than the horror of actually installing all these things correctly began to set in. Thanks for your help. At least I have a starting point.

Man, you guys are awesome with the quick responses. Thank you guys so very much. I'll revert back to this thread if I run into any hiccups.

The rom you wants recommends el26 cwm there are different ways to get cwm but to mee this is the easies for noobs but please read don't brick
"preferably in stock el26 cwm if possible"
Then just follow the rom recomended instruction
Flashing instructions:
Full wipe recommended, that means....
Wipe cache
Wipe data
Wipe dalvik cache
Calks format all(you can find this in any of his actual threads)
Flash rom
Enjoy

Two more questions for you guys. I assume CWM well allow me to back up all my data so that once i flash a new rom, I can retain all my apps and contacts?
Secondly, can I go back to my stock ROM if I don't like the custom ROM like nothing ever happened? Or will my phone be deflowered and never the same again? Just wanna make sure before I try this.

You guys at the best. I was able to stock root my phone with CWM and flash AOKP Milestone 6 to my phone and I've been tweaking ever since. Thank all of you for your help in getting me there. I'm becoming very familiar with Nandroid, wiping cache and installing mods via safe recovery. This is the most fun I've had with a mobile phone in a long time. Thanks again brethren! Good bless

Simple instructions requested!

Hello,
I'm getting this device next week and I'll be unlocking the bootloader straight away but the amount of instructions for flashing ROMs is baffling me. In the past It's been a process of install custom recovery then flashing a ROM (full wipe) reboot and job done but there's plenty more steps for this device so can anyone break it down for me because I'm pretty confused especially when it comes to rebooting into another menu to flash a boot.img or something.
Also, I'm thinking of sticking on a Stock Sense (but with bloatware removed and rooted) just to test Sense out before I move back to my comfort zone of CM9/CM10 so how would I go about this? Is there any bloatware free pre-rooted fully working stock Sense roms available?
Finally, there's a load of information about kernels which I'm new to due to never having to worry about flashing them in the past. I'd be happy with sticking to one single kernel (So I don't have to mess about with them every time I flash a new ROM- if that's possible?) so which one is the best for general daily usage, and has over-clocking enabled.

There are not additional steps to flash for this device.in fact it is easy. When I was new here at XDA I also was too confused. Flashing a kernel seemed impossible to me.
But I began to read the internet and the forums extensively and slowly learned.
Try ckpv5's my sense v rc2.0 very smooth pre-rooted rom.u can always uninstall the bloatware using Titanium Backup.
Unfortunately as our device is s-on u will have to flash the kernels every time u change a rom unless both of them need the same kernel.
The provision rom feels great for everyday use.use the latest Hellboy kernel that can be OCd plus added KSM support.

Thanks for the replies.
I was also wondering if I'm right in thinking this is the right order (For rooting my device via the Toolkit);
Unlock Bootloader
Flash Recovery
Do a Nandroid just in-case anything buggers up in the future.
Flash a Sense-based Kernel (So I can overclock etc otherwise I could completely skip this step I guess)
Click the 'PermRoot' extra in Toolkit.
Job done.
Does that sound about right? I think I'll just stick with Stock Sense for the first few weeks or so and if I get sick of it I'll move to a custom. I'd be happy with a Rooted stock device though just to get rid of the bloatware and have access to Adaway & Titanium Backup.

Yes that order sounds right but if you dont want custom right now and want to remain stock,no need to flash any kernel!just remove the kernel step from the order

But I'd need to flash a new kernel in order to over clock (unless the stock kernel is overclockable) or is the devices performance and battery fine with stock levels/governor?

Stock kernel is not OCable.tell u what,since u want to remain on stock now,root it and remain on stock for now.then after u get comfy after rooting it and get settled,flash a JB rom and a custom kernel.stock is always laggy.

Secondly, i am saying that since he is a bit confused about the toolkit and kernels and all,he should flash kernels later.thats a bit advanced.he will root it and then may learn a bit more and then experiment with kernels and stuff.

I'm not a complete noob when it comes to flashing ROMs etc seeing as though I've tinkered around with my last 2 devices. Its just the process seems a bit of a pain (The order and rebooting into different menus to flash kernels etc) so I'd rather read into it and get comfortable with the process. So I'd like to just root it so I can uninstall any bloatware and third party apps I can reinstall from the Play Store, I'd also like to add Adblock (A big reason I root my phones). I'll be flashing a ROM as soon as I find a fully working (100%) ROM (any recommendations and a simple step by step guide to install would be amazing too)

A noob's guide to rooting and flashing

Looking into rooting? Maybe try this foreign ROM thing? (Not talking about ethnicities here) Here is the place to be.
First of all, make sure you have a T-Mobile Galaxy S3. (Aka t999 or d2tmo)
If you follow instructions here for any other device, even for galaxy s3's of another carrier you are extremely likely to regret it and end up having to unbrick your device because you installed an incompatible file.
You can take your battery out to make sure it says t999 under if you are not absolutely sure.
Rooting is a similar idea to jail breaking an iPhone. It removes what restrictions there are with android devices. Yes, it is perfectly legal.
Which leads me to my disclaimer:
I take no credit for what's posted here.
The only work here that's mine is the organization. Please donate to the rightful people who spent quality time developing.
Also I am not responsible for any damage done to your device.
It is vital that you follow instructions in every exact detail.
Firstly, rooting.
1. Install drivers for your device onto your PC. To do this, you can install Samsung Kies or there are downloads that will install the drivers solely(recommended link for drivers http://d-h.st/zya)(thanks DocHoliday77). If you get to the point where you can exchange files to phone from the computer and vice-versa then you're set for drivers.
2. Do a backup (using Kies or a program of your choice)
3.Uninstall Kies. Kies doesn't play nicely with the program used to root called Odin. So uninstall Kies so Odin can work unhindered. Your drivers should stay. But make sure you can still copy files between your phone and computer before proceeding.
4.Follow these instructions put together by OfficialPhoneRebel(aka EverythingApplePro):

Yes, I used this method and it did work for me.
5.After you are rooted, the first thing you wanna do is either install ROM manager (on play store). Open ROM manager. (Yes, give it superuser rights) and install the latest clockworkmod recovery, or use GooManager to get TWRP recovery, both work, but sometimes one is suggested for the installation of a specific ROM.
6.Now install busybox(also in play store)
7.You're all done!
If you've made it this far, kudos. Now you're gonna wanna get the app called titanium backup and do a full backup of your phone. Also boot into recovery (home+volume up then press power until it vibrates all while holding home+volume up buttons) do a backup through these menus. If your feeling like an over achiever and wanna be super safe then go ahead and back up to both your internal sdcard and your external sdcard. Also it now would be wise to back up your IMEI nv (basically your phone's identity), instructions for that can be found here (thanks to daxecutioner24)
Now you have reached a possible stopping point. Stop here and enjoy root privileges. Continue to read how to install a custom ROM.
Installing a custom ROM(operating system):
GooManager (on play store) is a pretty good directory for ROMs. And is a great place to download them and gapps. Now since not every ROM installs this way it is important to check the main page associated with that page to see if any special instructions are required.

Roms:
Gapps can be found either on the ROM's page or through goo manager make sure the firmware versions match up (like android 4.1 and 4.1 jelly bean gapps)
For a pure android ROM I would suggest CyanogenMod 10.1 (the one I am currently on)
For an inverted stock ROM stuffed with fun features I would suggest DaRTHSTALKER S3

Backups are your friend. Especially through recovery mode. They have saved my butt several times when flashing a ROM went wrong.
And yes it is possible to sim unlock (make it so you can use it on any GSM network(such as at&t or US cellular)) your phone:

Problem happened and you can no longer boot correctly? This is actually very common.
If you can boot into recovery:
Boot into recovery (Hold home button and volume up then press power till it vibrates all while holding volume up and home)
Restore backup (easiest method)
If that falls through then install a rom by following the instructions mentioned earlier.
If you can't boot into recovery or if those methods didn't work:
You must odin to stock. Follow the instructions here under using odin. Odin and Driver files are at the top of the post. Firmware files (what you put in PDA) are located here
If this didn't work, you may be out of luck, try again and if you are still stuck browse the forums and possible post something under Q and A if worst comes to worse, make sure to describe the entire situation including error messages you may have received so the problem can be pinpointed.
And finally, everyone be nice seeing as I am welcoming very new people to this thread.

Also it would be really helpful if you include how to back up your IMEI nv maybe link the thread before they start flashing roms. This is probably one of the most important thing as when you start flashing stuff the IMEI might get lost and without that there is no phone. Everything else looks good.

It should work fine.
I suggest either CF AutoRoot or root66 (see firmware link in my sig) as the best ways too root. Imo.

Yes this works for that all you needed to do is click on the CF-Auto-Root method during the process and that would've been explained to you. I have used CF-Auto-Root atleast twice on two different galaxy s3's running jellybean 4.1.2 and it worked more than flawlessly

kernel is when hardware need something like you bluetooth or need to adjust screen brightness it send a request to kernel bla bla bla.
you can only flash a kernel that is compatible to your rom by rebooting to recovery

The way I understand it is the kernel is the bridge between your input and the devices output. Like the bridge between software and hardware... Sorta.. Ya you don't need to flash one sometimes custom kernels can add features and maybe improve GPS/battery life but I don't use custom kernels much. But that's just me some people are in to that stuff.
And yeah it just depends on the specific ROM for the specific features. I don't know if this is still a think its been a while since I've had some Samsung action but check our hyperdrive they had some good stuff going on when I used em.

Best bet is Google. Everything you could ever want to know about kernels and more! If you want to know about custom ones, read the OP's of the many available ones.

Rooting mean gaining administrative previlages for your your device, that is your current android user status is like a guest user for windows, you can play games do something but cannot acess system files, and a root user in android is like a administrator in windows you can do whatever you want even edit very important system files.
Kernel acts as an interpretter beetween the hardware and software of your phone, when an software wants to use your hardware it need to request permission from the kernal
CWM is not a must for rooting, there are various method for rooting but rooting with CWM is much easier and safer compares to others.

While we are at it, somehing I'd like clarification on! In the 2nd post, it is mentioned that rooting with CWM is safer and easier option! However I have rooted many devices without CWM with just one button click(ex- unlock root tool etc.), where CWM was not even installed! I manualy flashed CWM on some of them but rest are working just as fine!
What I want to know is, what is the main purpose of recovery when other apps can work just like them, such as rom manager, super su, titanium backup etc!

For custom rom you dont need to modify modify stock kernel .... and all custom roms are pre rooted .... you can see guid for making custom rom for grand see k2wl op in development section in grand ... thanks to him for his hard work and all other devs also to make roms like balliboxer and chotu is coming up with new rom .... thanks to all devs that they are working on grand ...

All devices have a stock recovery with limited features such as wiping data, wiping cache, reebooting etc.
Custom recovery like ClockworkMod and TWRP have much more advanced features such as backing up your entire ROM, flashing zips, and fixing minor errors etc.
So sometimes when you flash a custom ROM or root the devices you may need to back up your ROM so that if you encounter any problem in the middle of the process you can restore your backup and back to normal again.

[Q] Things that could go wrong.

So I've been thinking about flashing Paranoid Android 3.6, mostly because of halo and 4.2.2.
What's kept me from root+custom rom for so long is the possibility of a brick, or requiring the warranty and being unable to revert to stock
Had the phone for 6 months now, the longest I've stayed on an official rom on any phone I've had, with the impending release of 4.2.2 in the near future, i'm not sure if now's a good time to root. (Decisions, decisions)
Apart from dropping the phone and have the screen shatter, what could go wrong? Eg. Bricks, sds somehow?
I'm hoping to get a list of things that could go wrong, and the way to get something to go wrong.
Purely so I could avoid just that :good:

There is a best toolkit available for rooting and installing Cwm which u can use and will not create any issue out of it
Since note 2 is quite a old and most of the issue which occurs are solved by some or the other user
I would suggest take a proper EFS backup have a nandroid backup safe somewhere on pc etc after rooting and cwm
And after that enjoy flashing ROMS u like the way u want
Most of the thread has a guide to use / install so u won't have any issue I guess
Just follow the guide and u ll just be fine

There is a best toolkit available for rooting and installing Cwm which u can use and will not create any issue out of it
Since note 2 is quite a old and most of the issue which occurs are solved by some or the other user
I would suggest take a proper EFS backup have a nandroid backup safe somewhere on pc etc after rooting and cwm
And after that enjoy flashing ROMS u like the way u want
Most of the thread has a guide to use / install so u won't have any issue I guess
Just follow the guide and u ll just be fine

Yes u can use Dr ketan guide he is best at what he does and will support also
Dont worry u won't brick it
I have flashed so many rom the second day I get a new phone and all is well as long as I follow it properly

Assuming I install the custom rom, and then decide to install official 4.2.2 when it releases, what would I do?
Can I install through kies instead of reverting back to stock and having to deal with the system modified issue?

Incase in the future u wanna come back to normal or stock u have to flash the firmware unroot and then u can get update from kies

Today took a nandroid back up installed paranoid android halo is not at all amazing infact found irritating and restored the rom to sammy custom my personal view

The most important thing to do before flashing any rom is to create a backup of the EFS partition. I cannot stress it enough how many threads I keep seeing with people crying about losing their imei number and unable to retrieve them. Very important!
Besides that, don't use any rom released before 4.2.1 to minimize the risk of SDS. There's always a risk with rooting and flashing unofficial rom, however, only thing you can do is minimize the risk as much as possible. Good luck.

That is a risk associated with flashing the rom not the recovery. I have never lost my imei from flashing recovery, it usually happens after flashing a custom rom. Fortunately I always have a permanent spot on my PC for my phone EFS backup.

This is a frequent occurrence? In the event that it gets wiped, is restoring the EFS a sure thing, it is there a possibility it won't restore?

Also, if i needed to restore a nandroid backup, would I need to flash a stock kernel? Or just a restore?
Edit- I just read the Mobile Odin thread, and saw "While in theory Mobile ODIN can repartition and flash EFS and bootloaders, it will cowardly refuse to do so, for your own safety."
So, is mobile odin better than flashing from recovery?
