Hi developers!
I am a newbie in android development.
If you interested in clearing my doubts please do reply.
What are the benefits of rooting.?
What is a kernal?
Is CWM (Clockwork Mod) necessary for rooting?
Can we create custom ROMs easily?
(I created some custom firmware for Nokia s40 devices and stepping into android )
I have rooted my grand using clockwork mod recovery 2 days back.
If anybody interested reply. Devs may find this question annoying. But if you help me I can contribute in developing.

Rooting mean gaining administrative previlages for your your device, that is your current android user status is like a guest user for windows, you can play games do something but cannot acess system files, and a root user in android is like a administrator in windows you can do whatever you want even edit very important system files.
Kernel acts as an interpretter beetween the hardware and software of your phone, when an software wants to use your hardware it need to request permission from the kernal
CWM is not a must for rooting, there are various method for rooting but rooting with CWM is much easier and safer compares to others.

Well thanks for you both.
:good:
And again "Editing the kernal is the way for creating custom ROM ?"
"What is custom ROM ?"
For creating custom ROM should we need to edit KERNAL too?
While we are at it, somehing I'd like clarification on! In the 2nd post, it is mentioned that rooting with CWM is safer and easier option! However I have rooted many devices without CWM with just one button click(ex- unlock root tool etc.), where CWM was not even installed! I manualy flashed CWM on some of them but rest are working just as fine!
What I want to know is, what is the main purpose of recovery when other apps can work just like them, such as rom manager, super su, titanium backup etc!

All devices have a stock recovery with limited features such as wiping data, wiping cache, reebooting etc.
Custom recovery like ClockworkMod and TWRP have much more advanced features such as backing up your entire ROM, flashing zips, and fixing minor errors etc.
So sometimes when you flash a custom ROM or root the devices you may need to back up your ROM so that if you encounter any problem in the middle of the process you can restore your backup and back to normal again.

Hello,
In October I purchased my first true smartphone, the Galaxy S3 i747.
Since then I have rooted and just have a few simple questions.
I haven't installed a custom ROM, and I really don't know much about them other than that they are an alternative to the stock android os (4.1, 4.0, etc.) that comes with your phone. I have a few questions about ROMs.
I have heard good things about cleanROM, and I want to download it to my phone, but I can't seem to find my phone's version of it. Does it even exist for my version? If not, what are some excellent alternatives? (Must be able to change status bar, I hate the grey one in 4.1.1, just updated tonight) Finally, with a custom ROM, will I ever have to do anything with the stock OS again? Because I get this error message now after i have upgraded to 4.1.1, that doesnt let me check for updates as I have rooted my phone.
Thanks a ton for your help guys, and sorry for the noobish questions!

I may be wrong but it looks like cleanROM is for only Verizon. I dont think Scott has an AT&T version because he does not have our phone.

I had the same questions as you did when I first started...
Best thing to do is go into the android development forums or the android original development fund a Rom, read some of the posts and feedback on it, and if you like what your reading try it out due your self.
Some roms are built around the stock TWz JB os so looks wise is minimal but alot of the extra crap removed i.e all att bloat crap apps that you never use, and other tweaks here and there.
All this into can be found on the OPs first post about the Rom, and make sure that Rom is due your phone!
Follow all pre flashing instructions, and backup!!!!!
Just flash and test it out, worst case you can just restore back to your back up and it will be as you never flashed.
There is a link with the most common Roms I'm pretty sure it's a sticky, I always use a rom that active support for it so as issues come up, they get resolved.
This stuff can get very confusing, read, search, and just post Qs some people like my self have no qualms responding to repeat questions as we all were there once before.
But search is your friend
Hope this helps!

I have a few more questions. What is a good backup application? I really know nothing about them so if somebody would reccomend one that would be great! Another thing that drew me to cleanROM is that usefull applications like kies air and dropbox weren't removed. Is this the case with many roms?

Dropbox is always downloadable from the play store. Pretty sure it's the same deal with kies air, you can just redownload.
Backup as system is always done in CWM.
Backup applications and data for them,I highly recommend titanium back up, awesome app but phone needs to be rooted, with that app you can backup all your applications, flash a rom then just install titanium backup and restore all applications. It's very nice!

So your phone isn't rooted..
Did you try to when you hold vol- and power does the phone boot into recovery mode which should be CWM ... if that happens you are rooted..
Otherwise try to start all over with Odin and the tar files you need to root.

Odin is used to root the phone from stock.. it allows you to first install cwm and su ..once that is done, Odin isn't used any longer unless your reverting back to stock, CWM is used thus forward.

All N7100 users, would need your advices whether should I stay with stock or custom rom ? Do some reading so far and noted there are many issues that users have faces with when they flash custom ROM like efs mess up, binary flash counter increased....etc.
If base on your experience when you play around with custom ROMs, what would be the simple step to root your phone and which custom recovery is recommended?
Thank in advance for your advice.

I don't really see why a topic with this question would be necessary. There are enough walkthrough topics, it's all about reading everything very carefully and doing everything exactly as it is asked in the right order, and you should be fine.
If you are afraid or nervous or you have no idea what you are doing, stay far away from it because yes there are risks to it (but even then you can fix a phone, saved a few bricked phones already). There's a tutorial and walkthrough for basically everything on XDA.. The first months that I discovered XDA I didn't even register nor post anything, I just did nothing but reading and learning.
If you do it make sure you back up the efs as the first priority after rooting. Almost all of the disaster threads these days are related to efs problems.
-- Sent from the mighty Note 2 --
If you follow the instructions, you'll be fine. I've never had major issues rooting and flashing my last half dozen devices. There of course have been hiccups along the way, that's a given, but a fantastic learning opportunity, if you like technology.
On the other hand, if you're risk averse or don't want to spend time messing around, stay stock. There's plenty you can do without su.
XDA is a phenomenal wealth of resources, with plenty of people willing to help you discover your phone's potential.

Hey SASQUATCH I have that same question. I hope you don't mind me posting in your topic as hopefully we can kill two birds with one stone:fingers-crossed:
Well. . . I didn't root my device but scooped it up from Swappa rooted running stock JB w/Touchwiz. I have been shoveling through the many rom boards and threads but just don't want the hassle of bricking my device. So far these are the tools I've manage to put together:
1. Mobile Odin Lite.
2. Titanium Backup.
3. Rom Manager.
I don't know whether or not I need to install CWM custom recovery or not before I proceed

Yes in order to flash a custom rom you will need to flash a custom recovery. Depending on the Rom you choose it needs a certain kernel with cwm. You can use mobile Odin to flash the kernel you need to flash the Rom to work right. Here's a video explaining how to flash a kernel with mobile Odin.

Well, you just started---I would flash the gb27 full restore ...if you are rooted.. that will get you set up to flash anything u want--If you plan on being a mobile flasher, like me, mobile Odin lite will get u there(it only flashes kernels)- you have to remember that there are a multitude of ways to flash a ROM....I flash the el 29 kernel every time I flash a ROM... No problems...It direct boots from mobile Odin and you can wipe 'data'cache'dalvik'--then flash the rom you choose and gapps...NOTHING ELSE...Let it boot..unless the op states otherwise...Read---..Read...---Read...I started as a nooby , but after some reading.. I can flash whatever I fu....king want.. Just remember----'we are here to help... That is the XDA Spirit...I might be a little over the top,but ......lol...welcome to E4GT... I could write and write abou what I've learnt. But I think the message is better when learned----Good Luck....read...read...read...read...read.I can not stress this enough..You are always going to need a custom rec.

if you're looking to flash any AOSP based rom (like Cyanogenmod or AOKP or any variation on those) you have to flash a safe kernel with CWM. most ROM threads will either have a link to a safe kernel or at least provide you with the kernel you need and you can find it in rwilco12's repository.
the most important thing to remember if you plan on flashing ROMs is that pretty much any AOSP based rom requires you to use an Ice Cream Sandwich modem so you would have to flash that first via recovery. TouchWiz based ROMs can use Jelly Bean modems with no problem, so any custom ROM based off of TouchWiz you can just flash with no real issue.
and as for your app list might i suggest replacing Titanium Backup and ROM Manager with ROM Toolbox? its one app that does the job of both of those apps plus tons more; its like the swiss army knife of root tools. Also if you haven't, i would highly suggest installing Busy Box. its a huge collection of common linux tools bundled into one installer, and a lot of apps that require root access also require Busy Box to be installed.
So I managed to uninstall Tianium Backup and ROM Manager. Installed ROM Toolkit but didn't know which Busy Box to grab since there are a few versions listed. I was checking my files and noticed a CWM folder with two files in it which where probably leftover from when my device was rooted. . . should I just leave it be or what?
For the time being since I'm new to this I want to learn to flash ROMS for myself then to hopefully mobile flash for a few extra bucks on the side if it's worth it. I also have the pc version of Odin but would rather use that if it's a one program does all flasher.

I wouldn't mess with the CWM folder too much, could be a simple backup or it could be something required via your rooting method.
As for BusyBox, the most up-to-date version is 1.2.1, and as for installing it I personally use this BusyBox installer from the Play Store which handles installing and updating.
And in regards to flashing, definitely check out the Original Development and Android Development sections of the forum for all kinds of stickies and wikis available which give you the low down on flashing custom ROMs, plus you also have the Q&A forum if you run into a problem that searching doesn't help with.

You.!!! ! Kidding me ???!! Why not root + without root u can not flash any custom rom ...sir
So which phone u were using previously ? Iphone or nokia 3310 lolz. Any ways look for Android Revolution HD 19 or wanam Lite v2.9 both are based on latest stock samsung roms for good start.
Cheers
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Lets start at the beginning - rooting your device means you have "Administrator" rights on it and gives you the ability to do stuff you aren't supposed to do without root. The most basic example is - block most of the ads you see when browsing the web with your favorite browser and when using your apps.
It also gives you the ability to flash custom ROMs (which are new "Operating Systems" that have been modified for the better by other XDA members), install more root apps that let you do incredible things, and lets you change your DPI (making all the stuff on your phone smaller, thus giving you more things to see on your phone at any given time!).
In short, there are countless of possibilities. I'd recommend sticking with the Samsung based ROMs for a start as they will be more familiar. Specifically, I would recommend starting with Phoenix ROM (found here). It might be a big ROM (weighing 1.5GBs to download), but contains most of the features you'd ever need. I started with it and no matter which other ROM I try I just can't find anything better.
Please note, however, that you're better off reading about how to root, flash new recoveries and ROMs, what's EFS and how to backup it, and understanding what you're about to do before starting. Everything can be found on these forums
Good luck
The only thing you'd be losing is your warranty.
10/10 would recommend rooting.
Can we rollback to Samsung provided OS incase have to claim warranty due to some issue?
What are the chances of bricking the phone?
Sent from my GT-N7100
Yes you can, you can roll back to non-rooted original ROM. Not sure if it applies to all ROMs but some methods of rooting increase flash count which can be seen by technicians thus voiding your warranty. but there are ways to remove it/set back to 0. Just do what Freezeil said and read through the Dev section and see what can be done and the outcomes of actions taken. Personally I've only got Root on my N2 as all I wanted was to install several apps that require root(Titanium Back Up, Root Explorer, Lucky Patcher, etc.) and I'll be sticking to original ROMs on it, i.e. no custom ROMs. but it'll all depend on what you want. On my N1 I'm running different ROMs depending on my mood and I like experimenting with it. But always make sure you make a back up of your ROM and EFS file which contains your IMEI coz if it goes while flashing, it's a ***** to get back on your own.
If you do root check out the xposed framework and its apps. There is just about every customisation possible, its worth rooting for that alone

10/10 would recommend rooting.

rooting does not void warranty as now contributors and dev here has done great job as even after root the binary status remain unchanged so the only thing u need to do is just a click to unroot and if anything goes wrong still samsung wont be able to make out it was rooted you can check pre rooted odex rom here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230250 its normal samsung stuff with root priveledge u even have mods now to root it one click ,the only thing which voids warranty is custom recovery which can be reverted as already mentioned.

suggest u to download the odex rooted latest rom linked above and as those are samsung firmware default ,only if u want the latest firmware orelse just go rooting ,if u like custom then get your recovery to philz or twrp
note:backup your efs atleast 2 to 3 times just to be safe and keep it on pc or online storage
I like samsung rom which is pre-installed and would love if i can only get root access to this. So i should look for a way to get root access to this version itself. Can i achieve that? Any link that i can follow?

Galaxy toolkit is a simple tool to enable you to root your phone.
The main thing you will lose if you root is sky go if you use it. New eu law States you shouldn't lose your warranty either.
But you need to ask your self is it right for you to root your phone?
If you want increased volume, better anti theft protection, fewer ads, firewall, sd card memory swap, ability to Flash different roms, kernels etc etc etc.
The best rom I've found by a country mile is Jedi 17 rom.
Good luck and post back your findings

The day you are going to get a 4.3 update from Samsung is light years away. Let's conclude, it's too early to worry about it.:highfive:
@hellobye80
To get OTA just use Multitool mentioned in a link just above your post by @shhbz
select clean option
then open SuperSU app - setting -Full unroot.
After this you should get OTA, in case you didn't get try factory reset.
Still issue, you can get 4.3 (OR ant ROM) by flashing with Odin.
Thanks All.
Is there any app that i can use to restrict some permissions that are allowed to some applications like "Facebook" app that has access to "call phone number directly" .

Use xPrivacy xposed module.
First search xposed framework then you can get xPrivacy from that framework application itself.

I was reading a few articles and found something about flash counters. Do i have to worry about resetting the flash counters and if yes how can i do that? i am on stock rom with root access. i have followed this "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696" to root my phone using "1.Root with Stock Recovery - CF auto Root from Chainfire"

@dr.ketan I used Triangle Away to reset my counter ... now my last worry is to be able to get 4.3 that is expected to be released by end of this month... what is the process to get a OTA and also have Root access with Stock OS. please suggest
Upgrade to 4.3 with root
Hello
JB 4.3 for N7100 is now released for Note 2 in India.
I am currently using n7100 with stock 4.1.2 which was rooted using Method 1 as mentioned in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696" (Thanks to @dr.ketan for step-by-step guide). using this method I was also able to reset the flash counter to 0.
Now i want to have Stock 4.3 on my device and have root access again. is there a similar guide available that i can follow to achieve this?
I also read about Samsung KNOX and its added to the 4.3 but not sure if i understand that correctly. is there any issues with rooting a phone with 4.3?
Please Suggest
Thanks
Recently I came across a Samsung galaxy Grand forum on Facebook where some people claimed to root the phone using kingoapps one click method. This is said to be simple procedure with keeping stock recovery intact & one can get ota updates also. My question is is this true or its just trick to fool people?

Yea it's a valid tool available supporting a lot of devices, I'm not sure about ours
But it's been reviewed here at xda, cnet and droidviews but other phone users. As far as I know it uses adb to push SuperSU into the phone's system giving you root permissions.
It's basically made for noobs who are new to android and want their phone rooted without using Odin
http://www.kingoapp.com/
Personally, I rather root my phone myself than let a third party windows software push files into my phone.
Thanks for quick reply. I have rooted my phone with CWM recovery. I was interested in this because I can't get OTA updates after installing CWM

If you are on rooted stock Samsung ROM and not on any custom ROM like Slim, CM, GENNXT etc (ROMs which are modified) then you can still get OTA updates for your phone.
Check this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH5TX_Ig4sY
And I think there's also a thread for i9082 regarding this
Yes it works for me and advantage is OTA is still working but for customization we need cwm, as I tried flash gordon but not working for me
You will not full advantage of rooting.. For customizations we need CWM recovery to install any modded apps

Better use Cydia Impactor
For people like me who root just to use ViperFX and TiBa or Link2sd
Cydia Impactor is recommend
One main point to be noted is that it will not work on 4.2.2 ROMs as it depends on the MasterMey exploit which has been fixed by Sammy in every 4.2.2 ROM
