So I've been thinking about flashing Paranoid Android 3.6, mostly because of halo and 4.2.2.
What's kept me from root+custom rom for so long is the possibility of a brick, or requiring the warranty and being unable to revert to stock
Had the phone for 6 months now, the longest I've stayed on an official rom on any phone I've had, with the impending release of 4.2.2 in the near future, i'm not sure if now's a good time to root. (Decisions, decisions)
Apart from dropping the phone and have the screen shatter, what could go wrong? Eg. Bricks, sds somehow?
I'm hoping to get a list of things that could go wrong, and the way to get something to go wrong.
Purely so I could avoid just that :good:
Cheers.

There is a best toolkit available for rooting and installing Cwm which u can use and will not create any issue out of it
Since note 2 is quite a old and most of the issue which occurs are solved by some or the other user
I would suggest take a proper EFS backup have a nandroid backup safe somewhere on pc etc after rooting and cwm
And after that enjoy flashing ROMS u like the way u want
Most of the thread has a guide to use / install so u won't have any issue I guess
Just follow the guide and u ll just be fine
All the best

Bangalore ftw, thanks!
What's the toolkit called?
Could I just follow step 2 onthis page ? It's similar to what I've done on my old phone.
Still a bit jittery, if I follow the guide to the letter, what are the chances of a brick?
Cheers :good:

Assuming I install the custom rom, and then decide to install official 4.2.2 when it releases, what would I do?
Can I install through kies instead of reverting back to stock and having to deal with the system modified issue?

The most important thing to do before flashing any rom is to create a backup of the EFS partition. I cannot stress it enough how many threads I keep seeing with people crying about losing their imei number and unable to retrieve them. Very important!
Besides that, don't use any rom released before 4.2.1 to minimize the risk of SDS. There's always a risk with rooting and flashing unofficial rom, however, only thing you can do is minimize the risk as much as possible. Good luck.

Is it flashing the Recovery or flashing the rom that carries the risk of erasing the efs?

That is a risk associated with flashing the rom not the recovery. I have never lost my imei from flashing recovery, it usually happens after flashing a custom rom. Fortunately I always have a permanent spot on my PC for my phone EFS backup.

This is a frequent occurrence? In the event that it gets wiped, is restoring the EFS a sure thing, it is there a possibility it won't restore?

Also, if i needed to restore a nandroid backup, would I need to flash a stock kernel? Or just a restore?
Edit- I just read the Mobile Odin thread, and saw "While in theory Mobile ODIN can repartition and flash EFS and bootloaders, it will cowardly refuse to do so, for your own safety."
So, is mobile odin better than flashing from recovery?

Hello!
So, I rooted my SGS before and now I have a Note II and I want to root it but I would like to be like 99% sure it won't brick my phone
Which is the safest and easiest way to root the Note II?
Specs:
Android: 4.1.1
Baseband: N7100XXALIH
Build: JRO03C.N7100XXALJ1
All modifications are performed on your own risk. You can be 99% sure, but there are always risks of course...
I used mskip's toolkit which you can find in the development section of the forum. It was extremely easy and painless so I recommend that!

No it won't and it's always worth rooting.

i rooted mine. it's not stupid anymore like 2 years ago when i had to use a goldcard and such.
today it's sooo simple that afaik unless you yank the cable out during flash, or your pc crashes mid flash or something then you'll be ok.
Rooting usually needs to flash recovery, so even you interrupt in between or something happens that causing it, I don't believe still you can brick it. As long as your bootloader is fine, you are safe. Usually most brick happens due to flashing wrong file particularly pit. And bootloader though hard brick is rare.

1. As I said I live in Sweden, when I checked the Build and CSC it found a few on that list, should I choose United Kingdom because it's near Sweden?

When I used CF-Root to root my SGS I had to find the CORRECT one to download... Isn't it the same with the Note II? And do you think there will be any problems if I download the United Kingdom one even if I didn't bought the phone there?
No here you can root with same recovery to any available rom now.
Though you can flash any rom of any country irrespective of your region.
Rooting method will remain same as described in post#2 of thread you mentioned in previous post.

Ah! Downloading the file that was matched with mine PDA and CSC right now... If anything goes wrong, is there a big chance it is bricked or will that result in nothing changed? Nothing brick'd and nothing rooted?
Rom file you are downloading will just change rom(won't root) flashing rom should never brick if you properly flash with odin

I havenot rooted my device yet surprisingly. most times I root my phone as soon as root is available but I've not taken the plunge yet.
Reason being it's not required as device is very smooth and responsive. Those who have rooted could you tell me if you have seen any significant improvements?
Would you recommend it, does the s pen lose any functionality?
Personally I think its not worth it to root for once...I also used to root but with this phone I have not convinced myself of a reason before it used to be just for the updates but I have the international version so updates should be painless. ...besides I just bought this $700 babe and im not ready to chance that money yet

Just rooting can't affect performance, nor you lose any functions including s pen.
There are individual indication for all to root device. Only purpose is do root to schedule backup my data with titanium backup and for flashing some mode like calling recording

Yes you are right of course you have to flash custom Rom or mods to see improvementd our changes. I should have made myself more clear. Are there any roms out there which significantly improve performance , stability of note 2 without losing core functions of note 2?
read up, test a few out maybe? get custom recovery and backup your rom. then you can try out a few new ones. you might like it - or not. if you dont, go back to your stock rom.
i jumped to wanamlite (used his during the sgs2 days) and i don't see performance diffs. tis tweaks mostly at this point.
as always. ymmv and what i want in a rom, you might not etc. and the reverse of course.

Hello,
My phone is rooted but ROM is stock. I don't generally flash anything and just stick to removing bloatware.
I installed TWRP and now I cannot get the latest official OTA AT&T update since the update load fails due to not having stock recovery. I have been searching online and cannot figure out how to get stock recovery.
I have been able to locate a supposed stock zip ROM for this phone. Can I just somehow flash this ZIP to return my phone to stock.
On previous phones I have been able to do a factory reset, which I have done several times on this phone today, in order to get it back to stock and accept OTA updates. This TWRP seems extremely invasive and I cannot get rid of it.
Thanks for any help

I am the original poster. My phone would not flash the stock ATT rom that I downloaded somewhere. It could have been a bad ROM.
I could only end up getting into recovery and download mode. I did something to erase the entire operating system.
The guys over at TWRP or at least the guys on the message board got me through it. I ended up flashing the 3.5 clean rom. I never flashed a rom before only rooted. i also flashed the new modem zip as well. So far so good I guess.
Im going to have to figure out how to do an entire backup of my phone so that next time I can just restore it.
Thanks for the replies

Boot in to recovery (it's now an option from the power button) and follow the very easy buttons for backup. Select everything for an entire system backup (7 checks, I believe). Future backups can be just your data and apps if you want.

i have the Note 2. v 4.1.2 but i want to downgrade to 4.1.1 so that i can unlock my device so i can use any carrier.
but then i would want to do the 4.1.2 update again completely stock from the OTA or whatever its called. and still have it permanently unlocked from the previous 4.1.1
should i use odin and a stock 4.1.1tar file for the PDA to flash it or would this be the wrong way of doing this and possibly voiding my warrenty
Well there's a few ways of doing that. The way you mentioned!
But you can also just downgrade your modem to the J2, and you can perform the unlock that way... But if unsure about what your doing, do some research..

I root to freeze a bunch of useless system apps. That alone is enough for me.
Rooting is only 1 part of a very large puzzle when you are talking about modification ...
Root is only a tool ...
And the real fun starts when you can build and theme or modify any number of parts inside your device ...
You don't own it unless it's rooted ...and you'll never fully enjoy it until you make the changes that unleash what these devices are capable of ...
And that starts by reading and learning ...then reading and learning more...
Then you will be on your way to making the phone truly yours ....g

Heres the back story. I flashed a rom that wasnt meant for my version of the GN2. I was excited for it and I didnt read properly. So because of that I lost my IMEI, and the phone had no cellular connection. I fixed that with the toolkit and flashing a new modem. Then I re-flashed the ROM I was using before, CleanROM ACE 5.0.
Forward to now, Anytime I try a new rom, I can get them to work until the first reboot then they bootloop. Ive done full wipes, formats, everything and they all lock up after the first reboot. The only thing Ive been able to get to work is the original CleanROM. Im not sure if Im doing or not doing something wrong, any ideas?
Only one idea ...or rather a question...
Upon the repair of the device ...did you do a full return to stock using the factory shipped rom ???
You should try ...as it will map the partitions properly ...
My thinking is...that despite your efforts ...something within your partitions is still out of whack ...
The flashing of a rom not meant for this device can be particularly damaging as you already know....and may have left a portion undone ...g

I used the toolkit to reflash a stock image. The only thing I havent tried is deleting partitions. Does the TWRP offer that ability?
Don't delete partitions ...
You need them...
Run the return to stock method again....
And I mean fully stock ...with the 3e recovery ...then root again with CF autoroot ..and then ODIN flash your TWRP recovery..
Then we can attempt the different Roms...
And remember ...
Use a PC for downloads ...not the device ...g

From all the all roms I have seen, its not available yet...
And as for the patch I was thinking of trying it but im afraid of bricking my phone. You can flash that rom as long as the rom doesnt install two files( which are carrier related). I just cant remember what files. Just read in that thread and look for those files. when u download the rom use root explorer and check that the rom doesnt have them in there.
Let me know how it goes ?

Me being the noob that I am, I (stupidly) decided to simply go ahead and flash the N7100 version on my L900 following the instructions for the N7100 (original) varient. It of course bricked me, never got anything beyond the flashing Samsung logo, just does that forever until I pulled the battery.
However, by attempting to flash it I seem to have created other problems and here's where I'm stumped. I am now unable to restore my TWRP Nandroid I made of my stock rooted MK4 before flashing, restoring that results in getting stuck at the flashing Samsung logo (again). It doesn't matter what options I restore in TWRP (System, Boot, Data, etc) it has the same result: the flashing Samsung logo forever and ever and ever. I read somewhere that 4.4 (the DN3 ROM) messes with partitions because it enables multi user support...could that have anything to do with it? The only way I have been able to get my device back working is flashing stock unrooted MD4 TAR through Odin. I'd really rather not start from scratch though on my settings and everything though, and the only backup I have is that Nandroid, no Titaniums or anything else. Can you help me restore the Nandroid or is it a lost cause?

Did that...still results in flashing Samsung logo hang up when I restore the Nandroid with TWRP . I really haven't the slightest clue why this is happening, as my phone is currently running stock unrooted MK4 flashed from ODIN just fine.

I see your problem. Twrp does not backup or restore 4.3 properly. You need to use Philz 6.07.9

I'm working with eteam to port dn3 4.4.2 kitkat to AT&T tmobile and 7105, we are almost there. It's running solid. I may then consider porting it to vzw and sprint

Be patient. It's coming.

Well I haven't installed Philz recovery yet, but considering my Nandroid was made with TWRP will Philz even see it? The only reason I ask is because IIRC Philz is based off of TWRP, no? What I'm getting at here is that I'm pretty sure Nandroids from different recoveries, for example CWM and TWRP are completely incompatible right?
If I can't restore the backup I made from TWRP in Philz am I dead in the water? If so, I guess I learned my lesson, that is to have a contingency plan such as Titaniums in place (particularly for settings). I guess I really didn't expect a Nandroid to just fail spectacularly...if TWRP really is completely borked up with backup/restore on 4.3 it would be nice if they had a warning somewhere in the recovery or on their site. I would think that would be kind of important to know before you try to use a backup made using their recovery...

Okay lets cover the backup types first. Philz will backup/restore in both twrp and cwm format but you have to select the option. Now about your backup it will still be no good since it was created with twrp.

now that we have 4.4.2 there shouldn't be a reason we cant get this rom ported
