I currently have the Galaxy Note 10.1, which currently has most of the features that the Note II already has, and soon to get more whenever they roll out JB.
I quite like the Note 10.1 and think that the Note II is quite a nice piece of equipment. But, I have this overwhelming feeling that the Note II's features will be redundant considering I have the tablet. That, or it'd make my tablet a bit useless, depends on how you look at it.
So, my question is, do you guys think I should buy the Galaxy Note II or the Galaxy S III? I also seen that the new LG Nexus 4 is quite nice, but with the flaw of not having expandable storage from what I've been able to gather. Or, do you guys have any phones that you would recommend that's pretty high end and expected to be good? I'm not buying my phone for at least a month, so I'm starting my research now.
The Note 2 is a perfect combination of a phone and a tablet. You can utilize it for both purposes easily. I strongly recommend it.

Thank you for your recommendation. I'm going to do more digging into the phones to see what would be the best for me. But I'm unfortunately one of those techies that like my equipment to be high end and very pretty..
Question is really.. what do you do on your phone? watch movies? alot of web browsing?
i love my note 2 cos i do just that.. watch movies, listen to music, surf on the web reading news, forums.
couldnt live with anything smaller now. and me and my G/F use the pen daily.
if you like the Note 10.1 i think you cant go wrong with note 2 if you can stand the size

Well, on my current phone (Galaxy W CM9 Beta 1) I used to do a lot of web browsing, but, my current phone right now isn't playing very nice with me and Dolphin. I tend to do a lot of texting, as well. If I have the time in college or out and about I may watch a few things, depending on battery. It does seem like a brilliant choice. But, the 5.5 inches does sound rather insane! But the pen does come in handy a great deal. The Note II is the top contender for me, right now. No other phone even amounts to how amazing it is to me.
Note 2 is simply the best phone yet. And size is really good. Felt like it was designed for me after several hours of use. And the battery is so goood

Well, I think it's decided! Thank you guys. I really do need something with good battery. I was worried that with the massive screen and overwhelming processor that the poor wee battery wouldn't be able to cope! The Galaxy W has terrible battery life when the data is active, which is something I tend to use a lot.
the size is huge but you get used to it, and i gotta say i love the pen for writing notes you can have a small notepad pop up every time you remove the pen im not a huge fan of onscreen keyboards and writing with the pen is very comfortable with almost no lag on the input.
was in the hospital for 4 days and the note 1 phone saved me with its huge screen, i watched youtube and movies and never felt the screen beeing to small or got eyestrain from its size.
Battery time is amazing on the note 2 also. about 8 hours watching movies twice what the first note could do, and the same the iphone 5 can do
ive seen some reports of even 10 hours watching movies
i dont see my phone as large any more, its normal its the other phones thats small.. smartphones should be about 5" with all this CPU power!
You should buy the note 2 because there is no other phone on the market now that can perform better than it benchmark test prove that.

I'm betting the note 2 is going to make your tablet redundant and not the other way around. You'd probably find yourself using the phone more than the tablet because how much easier it is to hold on to and take with you on the go.
Tablet functions on a phone that fits into my pocket? Yes, please.
My advice, sell the note 10.1 before the value goes down too much if you plan to get the note 2.

See, I use the tablet for note taking in college. Well, that's what I bought it for, at least. It arrived as my classes got to the point where I wasn't getting taught anything. So that's on hold for a month or so. I also use it for organisation with the calender for things such as college assessments and important dates. So I'd have the calender synced on both devices, which might increase productivity. I'm using it for app creation, whenever I get back into it, too. It's also used for when I need to use stuff like remote desktop, or take it out with me for when I go to fix up computers, or do work on my own, as well as general web browsing. And I use it for guitar, as well. One of the best uses I've found for it!

After looking at your list it would still seem the note 10.1 is a waste. I'm a programmer as well but not a musician. A laptop note 2 combo should beat out a note 2, note 10.1 combo for school related task by a long shot and both could sink to Google calendar. As a programmer I would hate to be stuck with all my devices running a mobile OS not to mention the added weight I would be force to endure from carrying all those devices. When fixing pc's I want the fastest and easiest to use device possible and there the note 2 would again beat out the 10.1 and not mention since it is a phone we'd always be carrying it.
It seems like the only real area it would shine is the musician route for your guitar and for that it seems overpriced. Of course this is all my opinion so please don't take any offensive to it.
If you get the note 2 you will end up selling the note 10.1... I own a note 1 (waiting for my note 2 to arrive) and I had a galaxy tab 10.1 p7500.. I bought my tab back when I had a gnexus and was very useful but since I got the note 1, I didn't use my tab at all so I've sold it because it was just a dust collector...

I see where you're coming from, and I'm happy with your input. The Note 10.1 is brilliant for college related stuff because I have a desktop, meaning with my Note 10.1 I'm able to sit downstairs to study. It's also great for college because of how light weight it is. I just pop it in my bag and off I go. The way I use it is quite productive, for me. When fixing PC's it's normally so that I can have certain things up on the screen such as instructions, videos and what not, meaning the bigger screen is still more efficient. I normally have my bag with me when fixing PC's so it's again, on my person and easily carried. I went with the Note 10.1 over a laptop because of 1.) It's lighter 2.) Faster to boot up and operate, since everything in android is small (for the most part) and 3.) A laptop would be a waste, considering I have a high-end desktop. I did plan out what I needed before making the decision of getting one. As a programmer, though.. I work on Visual Studio for college and my own C# projects, but with Android - when I go to learn to develop on it - I will be programming with a mixture of AIDE and Eclipse. AIDE is an APK in android that lets you design apps straight from your device, then build and test them, too. It also syncs with your workspace for on the go.
But, I do thank you for your honesty. My set up is ideal for me, so far. Just that my phones a bit rubbish because of the lack of ram. I still need to look more into what is out there. Money is a bit of a factor so if I can get something that's pretty great with a lower price tag I'll probably jump on it.

very helpfull thread after reading through this thread i think i am gonna buy not 2 only i have this old galaxy S which i think needs a replacement :cyclops: few days back i saw this galaxy note 2 in a show room since then i doubted whether to buy such a big phone or not but now i think i will buy it as soon as i collect enough resources i mainly use android phones to play games

If you want an android phone for gaming I'd recommend a T3 device like the HTC One X+. T3 has exclusive THD games however Gameloft games don't work as well as not optimised properly for T3.
None the less GN2 is still packing some gaming power behind it.
A simple answer to your question is. If you are buying a smart phone now, than buy Note 2. Why settle for something less, when the next big thing is already here. Lol

I was looking to buy a Galaxy Note 8 for the past weeks, reading forums, reviews, etc. I really like it for the SPen, Quadcore and for being 8 inch. Then I saw a promotion on Note 10.1 which is the cheapest I've ever seen. Well, the difference between Note 8 and Note 10.1 prices is only $28 (Note 8 as more expensive). Both of them only wifi version.
Considering the image quality, the updates, the lightly fast processing, the light weight and new technology on Note 8, I really don't know what to do. I mean, 149ppi of Note 10.1 is really annoying and its weight is not comparable to Note 8 (but the weight is not a really problem to me).
On the other hand, I'm just thinking if I would be pleased in watching videos, reading books or other results with images (photo, games) with the 8" screen. What would be better in general for you?
P.S.: The Note 8 wifi only has a samsung official update (on-the-air) for Android 4.2.2?

I'll attempt to help you out. Never used a Note 10.1 but have read many posts from users that have both. Most feedback is exactly what you stated. Note 8 has a better screen, speed/smoothness, and feel to it. As for reading books I'm not sure but for me the 8" screen is about the perfect tablet size. If you use the tablet at home primarily than a 10" tablet would work out fine. However if you plan on carting the thing around my opinion is the 10" tablet is a bit cumbersome.
As far as I know there is no official Samsung 4.2.2 release. The build being used currently is a beta leak. However, I'm running a 4.2.2 custom rom and it is 100% stable, has floating multiwindows like the Note 10, and is smoother than 4.1.2. The Note 8 may never see an official release because Samsung might just jump right to 4.3. I would think something should be released in the near future.

I was convinced to get Note 8 when I saw this promo that put the choice in my personal view and not exactly in the price.
I would like to get around with my tablet as I'm doing some academic works and I would use it at home for entertainment since my notebook can always do the hardwork here. I do work with video so I would like to get a nice screen for viewing pics/videos, image quality is pretty important here (considering the Note 10.1 screen). I have another doubt about web browsing (I'm putting this things cause I've never tried both tablets on my hands), but in video reviews the Note 8 seems to get it done as well.
I'm voting on Note 8 as I only think in Note 10.1 for its screen size.
P.S.: what do you mean when you say "I would think something should be released in the near future." Do you mean a new GNote tablet or that Note 8 could get 4.3 update?
err we do have the official release of 4.2.2 on note 8 but the last release was for germany & asean region. but the features are less then what we expected... plus some feat missing.

I was wrong about 4.2.2 obviously. Did not realize some 3g models were currently getting that rolled out.
What I meant was since 4.3 is already out some manufacturers such as HTC are choosing to bypass a 4.2.2 release and go straight to 4.3 on certain devices. Thought this could be a possibility for some Samsung devices as well.
As for web browsing on the Note 8, I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly it loads web pages. I have an S4 as well and the Note is much faster.

If you don't do much reading... and don't need spen ..get the nexus 7 2013. ..it has an amazing screen and the speakers are awesome... and the price and updates are unbeatable.. (just got it too)
Also consider the new LG gpad 8.3 inch tab which had been announced

I have a tab10.1 and a note 8.0.
I use both for:
Internet, Email, movies, games. reading books and magazines.
Advantage 8.0: Weight, size
Disadvange: The only real disadvantage compared to the 10.1 is when reading magazines. Have to zoom in a lot and then lose track
8.0 goes on travel, I find the 10.1 to big for on the road.
Im just comparing form factor, not the actual devices.

pakure: I'm choosing Note series for reading and Spen for writing in first place and to see as well if I can do some others creative works with the Spen. Anyway, I will be watching a lot of stuff ocasionally and gaming but I'll be primmarly focusing on Spen and reading/writing. And getting a good use of its quadcore.
HANSB57: Yeah, I like your comparison from having both options. I like the portability for travelling and walking around with it. I would really like a Note that would be possible to carry around a lot, everywhere. Something light but with a screen able to do multitasking, easy to write/read, to anotate, to watch videos and to edit imgs.
I have two days to make my choice and now I'm going on Note 8.

I understand! Since my option is N5110, I'm on wifi only on 4.1.2. I'll be waiting that future update to really come. Let's see what Samsung is capable of. It shouldn't exist that kind of OS politics. It's such easy to get these updates in new devices.
After knowing your device requirements,......I suggest you get the note 8.

I have three last important questions! I need to read PDF as results of books scanning. Is it fine to read these PDF files that are in landscape orientation? I mean 2 pages side by side in one landscape pdf page. Is it possible to read at least holding the Note 8 in horizontal view?
The second question is that I read about a 32gb microSD size limitation at samsung official user manual. But in gsmarena (for example) I can see the limit up to 64gb. Well, I would like to know if is it possible to put a 64gb microSD on Note 5110.
And the third one is about the speed limit. Which should be the ideal speed for getting a microSD card? Thinking about external read/write maximum speed allowed.

I have owned the 10.1 and now the 8.0. Writing is fine on either device. I'm taking college courses at night and I prefer the 8.0 for portability. The speakers are way better on the 8.0. My biggest issues of the 10.1 was the screen, being bigger but the same resolution as the 8.0 was just blurry enough to be annoying. It's a bigger issue than one would think. Also its hard to hold without being in the way. where as the 8.0 is nice for ebooks and surfing the net.

1. i think you need to zoom it a lil bit. depend on the book size... if the scan book are big you might not see it.
2. 64gb class 10 working fine. i use it on my note 2 and this note 8
3. go for class 10.
sdelliott31: once gain it's very good to listen somebody who owns both tablets. I'm really appreciated in choosing Note 8 for the pointings that you've said.
edan1979: ok! I'll need just a few books with that kind of display (horizontal 2 pages viewing), but it'll be ok zooming in particularly cases. And for the speed, I'll be glad to go for up to 30MB/s class 10 card.

I used to own a Note 10.1 and now have the Note 8.0.
I would say it's a slightly better experience drawing and writing on the 10.1 because of the extra screen size.
Multi window is also more useful on the larger tablet, battery life is longer and speakers are louder.
The 10.1 also has a true tablet ui while the Note 8.0 has in effect a phone ui.
Having said all that I sold the 10.1 once I got the 8.0 for the following reasons.
As others have mentioned the 10.1 is just blurry enough to be annoying. It is more of an eye strain to read text on it than it is to read it on the Note 8.0 inspite of the larger physical size of the screen. Also the colour rendition seems better on the 8.0. The 10.1 colours seem slightly washed out in comparison.
There are times where I feel a little cramped writing on the 8.0 but these moments are hardly worth worrying about in comparison to the advantages of the smaller form factor. The 10.1 is more cumbersome to carry around and it's significantly heavier so it starts to get tiring to hold after a time. The 8.0 is also much easier to type on while holding it in portrait mode. While holding it in both hands your thumbs can easily reach all the letters.
The 8.0 also seems smother overall. The 10.1 can exhibit a little lag at time, for instance a slight delay when trying to switch apps via the recent apps button. It's still a good performer but the 8.0 is just very slick and smooth almost all the time.
Battery life on the 8.0 could be better but it's enough to get me through an 8 hour day on a full charge. I guess Samsung had to make a trade off here - a bigger battery would mean more weight and thickness so the device wouldn't feel as amazing as it does in the hand.

I own both tablets. I just got the 8" because I used to have a tab 8.9 and I thought that was the perfect size for a tablet. This one is close, more similar to a moleskine notebook.
I'm a graphic artist and honestly the resolution never bothered me on the 10". Sure you can definitely make out the pixels, just move the screen an inch away or, as a personal trick I use an anti-glare screen protector. The suddle fuzziness blends the pixels together removing the aliasing that everyone hates. Plus it makes it look more natural (prints are not extra sharp), less reflective, helps finger gliding and gives a feeling of paper when using the pen.
That said I think the 8" is better for being more portable. And that's all you really should want from a tablet. Also the pen is slightly smaller but more round and easier to hold.
I'm currently using it with a SanDisk ultra 64gb sd card and it doesn't have any problem reading it. (Both tablets didn't).
dr.mOX: yeah, once gain 10.1 battery and screen size seems to be the point to make this decision sounds hard. But for Note 8 being smoother, newer and lightly portable is what should matter. I'm thinking over and over, but each time I look around it really looks like a certain decision on Note 8. As what you've said, trades are made for better experiences in another ways. For the Phone UI, it's a little thing, but it's a different thing. Anyway, it should be fine in portrait mode.
DBBGBA: Nice to read it. It's very important to be very close to "tablet experience" to me as with notebooks we can do some working with a restricted, but possible, another kind of portability.

I am thinking about trading my ipad 3 for a galaxy note 2014. My use is 90% of the time reading and studying (about 10 hours a day). I think the ipad screen is fantastic, but the software in it is crap.
Do you guys think that the note 2014 screen is better than ipad's? Will it generate less fatigue?

I'm on the same boat, looking to buy my first tablet but haven't decided which. Main use would be the same as you.
I'm leaning toward the iPad though.. after handling a few tablets, I feel that the ones with 16:9 or 16:10 form factor are not too comfortable to use on portrait mode, it's like you're holding a TV on portrait mode..
I do like the idea of the S-Pen though.. and the Note 2014 was supposed to have the advantage of being released earlier than the iPad 5, but Samsung has missed the release date they had announced, so who knows when it comes out..
I think you'll find that for PDF viewing and editing the iPad is head and shoulders ahead of any Android device. iAnnotate is one of the best apps for editing PDFs on the iPad. Yes the app is available for Android but it isn't even close to as good. Go watch a couple YouTube videos on this subject.

Being an iPad 4 owner, I can say that for annotation, Apple store apps are the best. But for viewing, it's pretty much a wash.
However, ezPDF Reader Pro, for Android, is pretty solid in my opinion, and I wouldn't mind using it as a daily driver. It's got good highlighting and sticky note features, which for me are musts.
It's not as nice as iAnnotate or GoodNotes for iOS, but it gets the job done. Plus you have widget support, whereas on iOS you don't.

iAnnotate is good on ios but god-awful on android. They haven't bothered to update it. The apple app may be better but the s-pen makes the note a more accurate writing companion. I know, I sold my ipad 2 to get the Note 10.1 (last year's edition). Been waiting forever to upgrade to a clearer screen and stupid Samsung keeps being unclear about release dates.
Maybe it'll be for the best. The 12.2" note is still rumored to be coming out soon and I think that'll be far better for studying.
that s pen would be really really useful for taking notes/markiing on your pdfs and such. thats just me though. i think it's worth the upgrade.
I don't understand why some people are really stressing out about the release date!!! like their lives are at stake lol! we didn't have it so far, we can wait 3-4 more weeks also! I never heard Samsung say it will be released Sep 25th, they said 3rd quarter, and we're not passed the 3rd quarter yet!! not a big deal!! (to me!)

I am a student in the IT program of a major university and I know for me the iPad was really frustrating. Mostly because of the limitations of ios and the lack of expansion memory. Android devices were much better for me because I could plug it in and transfer files directly back and forth like a portable hard drive, use microsd cards to swap files with people and/or computers and while the apps for the iPad were more polished the android market has been catching up very quickly. In my mind tablets are computers and ios is a phone/mp3 player operating system. For a portable media device the iPad is probably best but at least for me I much prefer the freedom android gives you for work/school productivity. There were apps on iPad that were very well done but in the end for a tablet I couldn't stand the lack of expansion and the shortcomings of the ios.
I should add that I am waiting for the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition myself, though I am without tablet at the moment and getting impatient to have one again so I don't know if I will make it to the release...

In terms of software yes, but i assume that since the note has an active stylus it would be better for handwriting notes on top of PDFs. At least i hope so. This is the primary reason i was planning on buying the note. Should work fine with ezPdf, no?
I am also interested in the Note 10.1 for pdf reading and annotation.
And while the choice of annotation apps may be a bit better on iOS, there are decent enough apps on Android. Plus I think the inbuilt Samsung note-taking software and features like multi-window look very useful and you obviously can't get that on the iPad.
The biggest advantage of the Note 10.1 for annotation is obviously the stylus and IMO that trumps any app advantage on iOS. For me a proper Wacom stylus is far superior for annotation to either an on-screen keyboard or a capactive stylus.
I also prefer Android for general file management and transfer purposes as well as expandable storage. In my experience iTunes is a piece of crapware and I would like to stay as far away from it as possible.
Finally the Note 10.1 has higher pixel density (299 ppi versus 264 ppi) and is much lighter (535 grams versus 652 grams)
Overall it's a very easy decision for me.
I vote for Note 10.1, it has S Pen + Split screen where you open the slides and Note app at the same time, plus easier file transfer and management

The GN 10.1 2014 edition will be available on October 10th and the writing is much more precise on the note. Plus the multi-window feature is great.
I think the displays will be a wash. For studying (I assume you are in school), EZpdf Reader Pro is indeed a very nice app. I also highly recommend LectureNotes and the add on audio app. I use it to take handwritten notes and record class lectures. Class Buddy Pro is also a good school app as you can imput all your schedules, when papers are due etc and have it sync with your google calendar.
I think the S Pen puts the Note 10.1 above all other tablets. I would like the price to be lower, but I will still buy it. Multi-window, the new screen, and all the other upgrades make this a must upgrade for me.

you seem to have tried some of these apps. Which do you think is best for annotating pdf's. I mostly need something good for reading, highlighting and occasionally drawing diagrams and what not over top of PDF's. I'll probably want to quickly jot hand notes over top as well. I've used ezPDF and like it, haven't tried much else.

I don't want to derail this conversation, but since we're comparing different platforms I wanted to throw W8 into the mix. Specifically I was looking at the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2.
It has a Atom Z2760 (2x 1.8GHz) processor, 2GB RAM, a Wacom stylus and full Windows 8. It would actually be cheaper than the GN10.1-2014 (32GB), even if I went with the 64GB version.
Has anybody had any experience using W8 as a tablet OS? Specifically with the pen, is there anything that compares to LectureNotes? There is OneNote, of course, but I have no experience with it.
What I just can't really imagine is using a W8 recreationally. I have no idea if there is, for example, a Feedly compatible RSS reader, a good podcast app (that syncs with my phone's podcast app), or a music app that supports Google Music.
What do you guys think?

that thing runs full windows 8. it shouldn't have an issue running google music in the browser. I'd want to see the tablet myself before passing any judgment. Previous atom tablet were kinda clunky. The display seems pretty low res

Yes, the display doesn't have a great resolution, more or less that of the original Note 10.1.
I guess you could say that, because it runs full Windows 8, there is no app-shortage. But I don't think it'd be very satisfying having to use the browser for many of your 'apps'.

I have tried all the PDF apps and EZPDF Pro is by far the best IMO . iAnnotate is a Samsung suggested app but I personally do not care for it .
As far as note taking apps Lecture Notes is #1 in my book and Write is also liked. For my med classes I love Lecture Notes for ease of use and audio recordings. For the rest write is an incredible free app.
I have had several tablets over the last few years, the note Is my first "must have'' tool.

with the win 8 tab you can run the full version of adobe cs suite. i've got cs5 on mine and works without any problems. I'm not too familiar with the free alternatives since I pretty much have to use the full adobe suite for work.

I am searching for a new tablet to buy and am really intrested in note series (sPen!). I have few questions for galaxy note 2014 owners:
1. Is it comfortable for reading or is it too big for that? Thats my main concern- i need a tablet for my e- books, studying.
2. How much time it takes battery to drop to 0 (with +- energy saving settings)?
3. Do you find sPen useful or just a gimmick? Especially for note taking?
4. Is this tablet worth the money/ what other tabs you recommend?
I come from iPad mini. This tablet really hurt my eyes, so i think i need a tablet with greater resolution since i read a lot. And no, i dont want retina iPad, i prefer android. I am also thinking about note 8.0, it is a lot of cheaper option too, but i want a 9- 10 inch tablet, its resolution is lower.. ah help me >.<

I also came from an iPad mini (the original one), so I'm right on the same page. The resolution on that device wasn't so hot.
1) I think it's perfect for reading. It really depends where you're reading, though. If you're worried about the size, just get a textbook or something of similar size, and judge it for yourself. For me, it works great for reading.
2) I haven't timed the battery myself. For the size, I feel like it has pretty decent battery life. I use it to take notes during classes, and in a 3 hour class, with the screen on the entire time, I see about a 100 to 70 percent drop. I'm happy with that.
3) The sPen is a LIFE SAVER! I use it all the time for taking notes. I use the Stylus Beta keyboard (on the Playstore) and it works exceptionally. With stylus beta and evernote, it's the perfect setup for me. Much faster than messing around with the onscreen keyboard.
4) It depends how much it is now. I haven't really looked recently. It has been out for awhile now, so I wouldn't pay full price now like I did when I bought it. Shop around, for sure. I've been really happy with my tablet though. It's a HUGE upgrade from the iPad mini in every way, shape, and form.
I've had them all ipad mini, air, note 8, note pro 12.2 and note 2014 10.1. The note 10.1 is perfect and I tell you why..
Ipad mini to restricted by Apple and I hate iTunes.
Ipad air, same reasons as mini.
Note 8, perfect portability, but s pen sucked because you had to write 45 degree angle or higher, plus s pen not good on small screen.
Note pro, loved it but portability sucked, to heavy, and not with $650.
10.1 perfect size and functions.
If you're smart buy a used one off ebay or Craig'slist. You can find them for $350

1. Very comfortable for me, I mainly use it for reading.
2. Without energy saving, I only charge it once every 3 days with my usage, but you can google for non-stop results. I think it's 11 hours for browsing and 4-5 hours for movies. Not sure.
3. I don't use it for anything.
4. If you buy on Amazon or Ebay, it's worth the money, but don't go to local shops if you live in EU, they have too high prices.

It's thin and light enough, with a screen that's big enough. you were on an iPad, so you understand tablet reading -it is what it is... Never quite the same as the real thing, but an acceptable compromise.

This really depends on what you've got running. If you let it idle, it will survive until day four. If you play some games watch some movies, browse some sites, it's possible to drain the battery in 5 hours. Generally speaking, on moderate to heavy use, you can get by on a charge per day.

Somewhere between a gimmick and a handy tool. There are some apps that will let you take some advantage of the S-Pen's functionality, and Samsung has a few, especially if you're thinking of it as an alternate interface/input method (in which case it's superb). But if you're thinking this will replace your paper and pen; meh, I wouldn't throw away my notebooks and pencils just yet. The truth is the current technology (Wacom, N-Trig, etc.) will always lag behind your hand writing, and there will always be a glitch here and there (no matter how beastly the hardware you're using is). There will be people who swear by it. They are lying; most likely to themselves. This can be a tolerable compromise, but it will never match a [hardware] keyboard or a pen and paper -and it's not exactly the perfect amalgamation either. In a pinch it will certainly do, and for annotating PDFs and whatnot, it's tough to beat -but a real book and a real pen is just orders of magnitude superior. Where this compromise takes lead is in the fact that one book weighs several of these, while one of these can be multitudes of books, the internet, a gaming console, and so much more (which by now you understand -based on your iPad Mini experience).

Honestly? I really want to say yes, but the answer is no. Two reasons: 1 It's a Samsung. Samsung is shoddy workmanship backed by worse customer support. 2 At this price you're starting to encroach on surface pro price range, and the Fujitsu Stylistic Q584. Yes, these machines do cost a little more -but they also do everything you expect from a computer. And if you're thinking of the pen -OneNote is king among all. A [non-Windows] tablet is a consumption device with some communication and minimal productivity capabilities. At the price Samsung is asking, it's not worth it.

So for question five [Do you recommend/would you do again]
I have a love-hate relation with android (especially Samsung). It promises so much, and the kicker is that it often does deliver... just not quite the way you'd expect. It's a little like "Bedazzled " where the devil grants your wish, but in a way that nearly renders it moot. I dislike iOS because of its limited functionality, general interface (lack of buttons and setting menus on apps themselves) -and quite frankly the active digitizer is a great tool. But iOS is consistent, robust and reliable. So, I will be forfeiting my Note 10.1 2014 in to an iPad Air [but I'll be forfeiting my iPhone 5s for a note 3 (or 4)].
If ever I do get another Android tablet -it will never cost this much again, because they're not worth it. I regret getting my note 10.1. You got to take that with a grain of salt, given my personal experience which is unlikely [yet possible] to be yours.
How do I reconcile paying nearly as much for a note phone? they're nearly everything the tablet ought to be in a much more wield-able form factor with an actual [good] usable camera. Who is going to tote around their tablet all day every day? Who is going to pull that behemoth out to snap a quick shot? Not I. But the Phablet? For me, it's just the right size to take everywhere every time; and it's smaller than most real cameras (or close enough).
How would I reconcile paying nearly as much for an iPad. Apple's customer service is a little more robust than Samsung. And limited though these devices are -they do what they are designed to do -far more reliably and consistently than most of the android devices I have owned. And like it or not, an Apple product is an Apple product. You take that out, and people around you know what's the deal. But when you unleash your Samsung Note 10.1 2014 people look at it, and know it's a tablet that wishes it could bear the prestige of an Apple product. True nerds will think "wow cool!" Everyone else will think "cheap knock-off wanna-be iPad". Who cares? You shouldn't. But I now realize, I do (a little), because for that price I prefer the prestigious ice-breaker, than trying to justify the awesomeness of my [now defunct, probably still working had it been an iPad] device. Last but not least, I was an early adopter of the Windows 8 tablets and I have a Sony Vaio 11 [regrettably -now that Q584 and Surface Pro 3 are viable options]; and thus it's going to have to be a while before I get another Windows tablet. (I'm inclined to wait until at least Windows 9+).
Maybe this is a little (or a lot) more than you asked for. But I wish someone would have warned me.
Lastly, on the note 8. Unless it's less than 1/3 the cost of the note 10.1 2014 -it's a bad move. Note 8 has all the shortcomings of the 10.1 plus the fact that it's inferior hardware (not least of which is the screen quality), thus amplifying all the pangs. Not to mention you just got done complaining about the iPad mini for being too small.
TLDR;
No. Don't get it. I'm sure there are tons of people who will tell you that it's a good get. I'm sure they have favorable experiences -and there is a lot to love there. But in the end it's not worth the price because it's Samsung and it's Android. At that price point you might as well spend a few bucks more and get Windows (but not RT!) especially if you're serious about it as a study tool: OneNote crushes everything that does and does not exists in the multi-universe. Otherwise pay less and get something else.

i think it's a great size and light to hold, fine for reading texts, pdfs, books (Kobo), websites. i was surprised to find it was smaller than my TF700 (piece of crap!) -- Sammy did a great job with the side bezels.

depends on how much you use it. it's not my only tool for work/leisure, but i would charge between every one and two days. (also, for me it takes about 5hrs charge to go from 20% to 100%.)

very useful for me (print designer): making notes at meetings (sNote out of the box), marking up text and layouts and pdfs and images. doing revisions this way is much more efficient that printing out (or waiting for) a colour proof, marking that up, and then couriering it to a client — especially if i'm working remotely or in transit somewhere. i can't go entirely paperless of course, but for everything up to final colour proofs, it's works great.
scrapbook is also really handy when tripping through websites or videos. the one thing i've no use for is the windows function though. that said, the sPen really changed my perspective on what a tablet can/should do: i won't buy another tablet with out sPen or similar capability.

if you need sPen, want a 2K screen, and you like Android, this is THE ONLY tablet to get. i waited until KK came out and a bunch of the earlier bugs (software and hardware build) were addressed though. with Sammy, i find it's good to wait for a few months after launch for them to get things right. also, now being able to get Samsung's Remote PC functionality is great.

Biggest issue. It's a Samsung! Plastic piece of ****. Build quality from hell. Have to return mine for creaky body and the bezel start to come loose from the glas. 750€ tablet with quality worse than a 129€ tablet.
The screen is nice, very bright and res is nice for reading, s pen is good for drawing and if u like to take notes but the apps that support stylus is quite few and samsungs s note and action memo is quite crappy. Besides the screen and the stylus which is nice if u need it. But its mostly a gimmick, i just cant recommend this POS. Did i mention that it lags like hell on stock firmware. Had to root and run custom to get decent performance and it still runs worse than my s4 with cm. I regret every day that I wasted over 700€ on this crap. Check around and you will see i ain't the only one who is dissatisfied with it. Buy something else than Samsung. Dont lesrn that lesson the hard way

Standby and wait for new Tab S series it will come with AMOLED display !!! .
I had an iPad Mini1, it was cute but that's it. The screen is not great and the battery wasn't as good as people say it is.
I also had an iPad3 and the screen was nice but it was uncomfortable to hold and I think the aluminium casing is slippery without a case.
iOS just sucks even though there are really good quality apps.
I've had a ton of android 10" tablets from Xoom, Tosh Thrive, Asus Transformers TF101, TF201, TF300, TF700 and Padfone Infinity.
I still have the TF700 and the Padfone Inifnity. The TF700 runs like a POS, slow and stutters and freezes up. I have a feeling the 1gb RAM is crippling it. I don't understand it when the prime and Tf300 was no where as bad, but I like the form factor very much and use it like a laptop and for remote desktops access it is great.
The padfone infinity is pretty awesome and it runs very fast, quadrant score is about 3 times that of the TF700 and feels like it. If it had an active stylus and a keyboad dock, I'd be happy with that as my only device since it is also a phone. My only problem with it is no SD slot so I got the 64gb version. I'm keen on the Padfone Infinity 2 but haven't tried it yet.
I also have a Surface RT and it is great for MS Office and File Explorer with a desktop. As well as that, I have an Asus Vivotab smart ME400C which is atom based Windows8 tab and runs full windows desktop apps.
Before I got my Note10 (P605) I had a Note 8 5100 (wifi+3G) and it is a GREAT tablet. It is snappy and light and runs soooo good. The only thing is the screen is not even as good as an ipad mini but it ****s on every other tablet I have owned for usability. IT IS THAT GOOD! if Samsung made a Note Pro 8.4 like their tab pro 8.4, I'd be there in a snap.
This brings me to my Note 10.1 2014 (P605 with 4G). The screen is awesome, the size is awesome, the speed is great (not as snappy as Note 8 in a lot of ways believe it or not!). I'm still on 4.3 but then my Note 8 is on 4.2. The pen is better on the Note10 than the Note8 and if you only got the Note10 to run Sketchbook ONLY, it would be worth every cent on that sweet screen. I do a lot of reading on it and the screen is just awesome. I photo edit and preview on it and its great. I also use it to annotate PDFs and draw stupid things for fun.
I'm still grabbing the Note8 most of the time when I head out of the house, simply because I can jam it into my coat pocket and cargo pants pockets. but at home, I'm on the Note10 all the time.
I love the Note10 and if I had to live with just 1 tablet and my Note 3 phone, I would pick the Note10 without hesitation.
PS. With regards to the negative comments, don't try to find the perfect tablet, it doesn't exist! Everything has a compromise but this Note10 hits a VERY NICE sweetspot and I would recommend it for student use if running windows apps is not a neccessity. Even then, I would try and get away with that by remote desktop because the Note 10 does everything else soooo much better.

I'm sure Samsung must be proud to have such staunch supporters. But the key point isn't just how great the machine is. The keypoints are this, this, and this. And for every one of us that actually posts -imagine the countless others that don't go online to post questions in forums. The countless others who just take the loss in stride, because they have little or no recourse.
In short, the Note 10.1 2014 has great promise, but buying Samsung is like playing Russian roulette. The hardware has great probability of failing, and Samsung has no problem screwing customers over. So I for one feel it's wrong to not warn people against the Note 10.1 2014. Because chances are, the tablet isn't going to fail you in those first 30 days, when you can take it back to the store you bought it and get yoru money back -no questions asked. It's going to fail you 32 days in. And then you're relying on Samsung's warranty -which isn't just going to let you walk into a local Samsung shop and shove your defective tablet into one of their [non-geniuses] mouths and let you walk out of the shop with a new replacement in hand. Other companies do that, Samsung just gives you the runaround, and cheats you out of your money.

I've heard a lot about the good and bad points about the note 10.1 (2014) here but there is only one thing that puts me off getting one: the constant talk is lag and sluggish performance. I currently have a nexus 10 and I am wondering how the real world performance on this compares to the note 10.1? If anyone has any experience of both I would be really interested to hear their thoughts. Thanks in advance!

There's no or very little lag on 4.4. I use my N10.1-14 probably heavier than most here because I'm a productivity user. I was just thinking to myself today what an amazing device it is (after owning it since October). I was working on a complicated Word document. I like to get the meat of a document done in Hancom locally and then finish it via RDP on my Windows desktop PC to guarantee the formatting's correct. Here's what I had open at the same time - Hancom (viewer and editor), Jump Desktop keeping a connection alive to my home PC with Word running, and two instances of Samsung's My Files in multi view to drag-and-drop files I needed between my device, home FTP server and Dropbox. On top of that I was watching Amazon Instant Video in a Pop-up-play window using PlayOn, connected to a BT keyboard and mouse, and listening to the audio via an AptX BT pendent. Also, so I didn't need to pull my phone out for calls or messages, I was using SideSync to display it on my N10.1-14 minimized. I have a 3G device so all this was being done over AT&T's HSPA+ network because the coffee house I was in had too many people on Wi-Fi. And that was all with little or no lag. Try that on another 10.1" tablet.
But as amazing as all that is to me, if you're purely a consumption user, you won't appreciate all the N10.1-14's features, the resources they take up, and Samsung's added UI clutter to get them all to work together. For consumption, stick to your N10, get an iPad, or consider the Teg4 Asus TF701 which is down to $299 new and has the same screen resolution as both the N10 and N10.1-14. The people *****ing about the N10.1-14 probably shouldn't have bought it in the first place based on what they use a tablet for.

Thanks for your reply. I have a note 3 and love s-note for taking notes at work. The problem is that the screen is too small to use it on a regular basis - I find myself frequently going back to pen and paper. So i'm thinking of ditching the note 3 and getting a 10.1. Good excuse for a new phone too

I have over a dozen Android devices and there is always some lag, somewhere in each of them.
As long as its not significant, you shouldn't get hung up about the lag.
The thing you want out of android is functionality and there isn't a better 10" weapon right now than the Note 10 2014.
In terms of raw potential, the Nexus 10 Mali 604 GPU will top out at 72gflops.

Ipad Air A7: 115gflops
Asus TF701 (Tegra4): 97gflops
You have 4 million pixels to push around. Gflops matter.
I'm not sure what your main use is, but if you are a student and you are in a major that requires a lot of math, BUY THIS TABLET. If you will not be using the stylus often, there may be better options. There is a noticeable amount of lag on the stock rom and stock firmware, which confused me because the specs seem great. After rooting the device and switching roms it is much smoother.
I literally bought this tablet to run LectureNotes for my math classes. I have had a big issue with lag specifically in that app (only that app - others had zero lag), but I finally got it down to probably <30ms response time in LectureNotes while writing. I had to find the OEM 4.4.2 firmware/rom and flash it prior to flashing a modded 4.4.2 rom. A bunch of tweaking was also necessary in the app's settings, but I actually found that the high resolution was my issue. I then lowered the resolution of my notebooks, turned fast rendering and page rendering OFF, used SetCPU to max out the CPU when the screen was on and LectureNotes was in the foreground. This significantly decreased my lag in LectureNotes. All of this only applies to that specific app. Nothing else had any lag once I was rooted and on a custom rom.
Would I recommend this tablet? It depends. If you are strictly going to use it out of the box, and keep it stock, my answer is no. I would get something with a lighter ROM out of the box. Possibly something AOSP. If you are a student and/or you plan on using the stylus often, it is worth every damn penny. My tablet replaced my math notebooks. Using LectureNotes to do math is SO much faster than pencil and paper, because of the custom tools that you are able to use. Constructing certain figures and graphs are so much quicker on the tablet than having to draw everything out.

Have you had a Nexus 10 and is it's overall performance comparable to the Note 10.1? I get a little paranoid about these benchmarks - I had a TF700T before my Nexus 10, which I recall benchmarked well. Even after unlocking, rooting and flashing custom firmware it was a completely unusable POS because of the lag.

I agree, my Note 3 flies now I have ditched stock. However, the only thing that worries me about this is the knox 0x1 issue. Has anyone reported getting warranty service with this flag on their Note 10.1 ? It is not an issue with my Note 3 because T-mobile couldn't care less...

That wasn't the SoC or even s/w. Asus is notorious for putting slow-as-crap bargain basement NAND in their devices.

I bought one for 299-39 bucks ebay cash so total came out to be 260 which is fantastic deal. Still waiting for it to be shipped.
I am original Note 10.1 owner so I can't comment on this 2014 ones but with my original 10.1 being my main notebook in college, I can't recommend enough. Everybody experience may varies depending on the usage and expectation. I took all of my notes using the tablet with the LectureNote app. Fantastic tool.
I expect nothing less from 2014 10.1 and can't wait to get it.
My Note 8 is starting to get old, and I would love to upgrade it to higher resolution and more storage, but keeping it about the same size. Until now I haven't found any possible replacements with an active pen, but this might be one:

Thanks, but those won't work for me since I'm looking to continue to use an active pen and Lecture Notes. The Nvidia pen has a rubber tip, it doesn't look good for writing in very small print which is 99% of what I need it for, otherwise that might be an option. Windows tablets are not an option for me as my company won't allow them on our BYOD plan (yet). So the only option I've found so far is this HP tablet, but I'm not sure about that one either so I'm looking to see what people think about it, especially if people notice potential issues with it.

Wait for the upgraded note 8.
Never go with windows 8.1 8 inch tablet, it have terrible scaling and reading through is a pain in the arse with high resolution. Android still the one with best scaling.
Another option is HP's Pro Slate 8, though i dont know about battery life with that resolution & availability+price unless u living in the us.
I am in the US and considering the HP tablet, but would wait for an upgraded Note 8 if there was a sign of Samsung actually continuing it. It's been over two years since our tablet was released so I'm losing faith that it will have a successor. Are there any rumors of a nww Note 8?

HP Pro Slate 8 might seem to be a very good choice if you couldnt wait for note 8 successor. High end spec, high resolution display & that HP duet pen technology. Still, not sure if it's using wacom or n-trig digitizer or proprietory one. Im worried if some app doesnt support pressure registration through its digitizer. But nonetheless seem pretty good enough

I understand you want stylus. Even I was looking for tablets with stylus that has all around capabilities like Note 8.0 which is a champion and unique device. But I wasn't convinced with the tablets available until I found Sony Xperia Z3TC. Other than stylus Sony xperia Z3TC does everything else brilliantly.
I don't have Nano sim nor I have access to 4G LTE but from other user reviews it is evident that there are many satisfied customers who reported good 4G/LTE performance.
My Note 8.0 is more than 2 years old ( bought it in June 2013) and till today it is still gives me around 9 hours of SOT in 4 days on an average. My Sony Xperia Z3TC is giving me between 9.5 to 11 of SOT on one single charge in 5/6 days without using power saving mode.Both tablets are absolutely brilliant.Samsung got it right with Note 8.0 and Sony with Z3TC.You can get any where between 9.5 to 11 hours of SOT in 4 to 8 days .You can check in Sony xperia z3 tablet compact section on XDA almost every member will report similar or better results. Some guys are even getting 6 and half hours of SOT at 50%. It is an excellent device for video playback and music.I love both the tablets.

It's looking like there will not be a next generation Note 8. We'll be forced to choose between a mid range tablet with an S pen (Tab A Plus) or a high end tablet without a stylus (S2).
My N5100, is wearing out (as my primary phone, it's been dropped a few too many times). But I haven't seen the international Tab A 8.0 S Pen variant with LTE for sale yet. I hope it's released soon!

I have not been looking forward to replacing it, but I knew it would be necessary so I bought the Tab A Plus (stylus + cellular radio). It just arrived, so I'm still in the process of setting it up and making comparisons between the two. Physically they're almost identical in size, though the A is thinner than the 8. Stylistically, the A is made out of plastic, but its looks mimic the iPad. The screen is decent (but the A and 8 don't hold a candle to current hi res tablets). The S Pen pulls some tricks from the current Note phones that were never brought to the 8. Based on my experience so far, I'd say it's a suitable replacement for those that must have a stylus.

Overall, I still like the Tab A. There are some things which can't be changed. The screen's aspect ratio is different and a few of my apps don't look good. S-Pen input is not precise as the Note- its fine for writing but won't generate the fine art that was able to be produced on the Note. The camera is not as good wrt no voice commands and colors are not as true. The headphone jack is now on the bottom (why?!?).
There are a few annoyances related to Lollipop and/or how it integrates with Touchwiz. The ability for the app drawer to list items alphabetically is gone. I fixed this by installing Apex launcher. There's now a high volume warning popup (common on many devices, but the Note didn't have it). The Samsung dialer apk does something weird which launches two keypads. Even worse, it requires double tapping during a phone call. From what I've read online, this isn't an issue on all Samsung devices (it may not even be an issue on all Tab A), but it is on mine. Fixing this will require root, which I haven't done yet.
On the positive side, S-Note is more flexible. I really like air control, particularly action memo. Battery life is good and the battery manager app has two power saving modes. The thinner bezels make the Tab A look sleek and modern, although my thumbs occasionally make inadvertent inputs.

Overall, I still like the Tab A. There are some things which can't be changed. The screen's aspect ratio is different and a few of my apps don't look good. S-Pen input is not precise as the Note- its fine for writing but won't generate the fine art that was able to be produced on the Note. The camera is not as good wrt no voice commands and colors are not as true. The headphone jack is now on the bottom (why?!?).
There are a few annoyances related to Lollipop and/or how it integrates with Touchwiz. The ability for the app drawer to list items alphabetically is gone. I fixed this by installing Apex launcher. There's now a high volume warning popup (common on many devices, but the Note didn't have it). The Samsung dialer apk does something weird which launches two keypads. Even worse, it requires double tapping during a phone call. From what I've read online, this isn't an issue on all Samsung devices (it may not even be an issue on all Tab A), but it is on mine. Fixing this will require root, which I haven't done yet.
On the positive side, S-Note is more flexible. I really like air control, particularly action memo. Battery life is good and the battery manager app has two power saving modes. The thinner bezels make the Tab A look sleek and modern, although my thumbs occasionally make inadvertent inputs.
