Should I buy the Note II?

I currently have the Galaxy Note 10.1, which currently has most of the features that the Note II already has, and soon to get more whenever they roll out JB.
I quite like the Note 10.1 and think that the Note II is quite a nice piece of equipment. But, I have this overwhelming feeling that the Note II's features will be redundant considering I have the tablet. That, or it'd make my tablet a bit useless, depends on how you look at it.
So, my question is, do you guys think I should buy the Galaxy Note II or the Galaxy S III? I also seen that the new LG Nexus 4 is quite nice, but with the flaw of not having expandable storage from what I've been able to gather. Or, do you guys have any phones that you would recommend that's pretty high end and expected to be good? I'm not buying my phone for at least a month, so I'm starting my research now.

The Note 2 is a perfect combination of a phone and a tablet. You can utilize it for both purposes easily. I strongly recommend it.

Thank you for your recommendation. I'm going to do more digging into the phones to see what would be the best for me. But I'm unfortunately one of those techies that like my equipment to be high end and very pretty..

Question is really.. what do you do on your phone? watch movies? alot of web browsing?
i love my note 2 cos i do just that.. watch movies, listen to music, surf on the web reading news, forums.
couldnt live with anything smaller now. and me and my G/F use the pen daily.
if you like the Note 10.1 i think you cant go wrong with note 2 if you can stand the size

Well, on my current phone (Galaxy W CM9 Beta 1) I used to do a lot of web browsing, but, my current phone right now isn't playing very nice with me and Dolphin. I tend to do a lot of texting, as well. If I have the time in college or out and about I may watch a few things, depending on battery. It does seem like a brilliant choice. But, the 5.5 inches does sound rather insane! But the pen does come in handy a great deal. The Note II is the top contender for me, right now. No other phone even amounts to how amazing it is to me.

Note 2 is simply the best phone yet. And size is really good. Felt like it was designed for me after several hours of use. And the battery is so goood

Well, I think it's decided! Thank you guys. I really do need something with good battery. I was worried that with the massive screen and overwhelming processor that the poor wee battery wouldn't be able to cope! The Galaxy W has terrible battery life when the data is active, which is something I tend to use a lot.

the size is huge but you get used to it, and i gotta say i love the pen for writing notes you can have a small notepad pop up every time you remove the pen im not a huge fan of onscreen keyboards and writing with the pen is very comfortable with almost no lag on the input.
was in the hospital for 4 days and the note 1 phone saved me with its huge screen, i watched youtube and movies and never felt the screen beeing to small or got eyestrain from its size.
Battery time is amazing on the note 2 also. about 8 hours watching movies twice what the first note could do, and the same the iphone 5 can do
ive seen some reports of even 10 hours watching movies
i dont see my phone as large any more, its normal its the other phones thats small.. smartphones should be about 5" with all this CPU power!

You should buy the note 2 because there is no other phone on the market now that can perform better than it benchmark test prove that.

I'm betting the note 2 is going to make your tablet redundant and not the other way around. You'd probably find yourself using the phone more than the tablet because how much easier it is to hold on to and take with you on the go.
Tablet functions on a phone that fits into my pocket? Yes, please.
My advice, sell the note 10.1 before the value goes down too much if you plan to get the note 2.

See, I use the tablet for note taking in college. Well, that's what I bought it for, at least. It arrived as my classes got to the point where I wasn't getting taught anything. So that's on hold for a month or so. I also use it for organisation with the calender for things such as college assessments and important dates. So I'd have the calender synced on both devices, which might increase productivity. I'm using it for app creation, whenever I get back into it, too. It's also used for when I need to use stuff like remote desktop, or take it out with me for when I go to fix up computers, or do work on my own, as well as general web browsing. And I use it for guitar, as well. One of the best uses I've found for it!

When note7000 came I regret buying it. When I heard of note7100 ive learned. I know that's the one I've been waiting. The next big thing right in my hands no regrets.

After looking at your list it would still seem the note 10.1 is a waste. I'm a programmer as well but not a musician. A laptop note 2 combo should beat out a note 2, note 10.1 combo for school related task by a long shot and both could sink to Google calendar. As a programmer I would hate to be stuck with all my devices running a mobile OS not to mention the added weight I would be force to endure from carrying all those devices. When fixing pc's I want the fastest and easiest to use device possible and there the note 2 would again beat out the 10.1 and not mention since it is a phone we'd always be carrying it.
It seems like the only real area it would shine is the musician route for your guitar and for that it seems overpriced. Of course this is all my opinion so please don't take any offensive to it.

If you get the note 2 you will end up selling the note 10.1... I own a note 1 (waiting for my note 2 to arrive) and I had a galaxy tab 10.1 p7500.. I bought my tab back when I had a gnexus and was very useful but since I got the note 1, I didn't use my tab at all so I've sold it because it was just a dust collector...

I see where you're coming from, and I'm happy with your input. The Note 10.1 is brilliant for college related stuff because I have a desktop, meaning with my Note 10.1 I'm able to sit downstairs to study. It's also great for college because of how light weight it is. I just pop it in my bag and off I go. The way I use it is quite productive, for me. When fixing PC's it's normally so that I can have certain things up on the screen such as instructions, videos and what not, meaning the bigger screen is still more efficient. I normally have my bag with me when fixing PC's so it's again, on my person and easily carried. I went with the Note 10.1 over a laptop because of 1.) It's lighter 2.) Faster to boot up and operate, since everything in android is small (for the most part) and 3.) A laptop would be a waste, considering I have a high-end desktop. I did plan out what I needed before making the decision of getting one. As a programmer, though.. I work on Visual Studio for college and my own C# projects, but with Android - when I go to learn to develop on it - I will be programming with a mixture of AIDE and Eclipse. AIDE is an APK in android that lets you design apps straight from your device, then build and test them, too. It also syncs with your workspace for on the go.
But, I do thank you for your honesty. My set up is ideal for me, so far. Just that my phones a bit rubbish because of the lack of ram. I still need to look more into what is out there. Money is a bit of a factor so if I can get something that's pretty great with a lower price tag I'll probably jump on it.

very helpfull thread after reading through this thread i think i am gonna buy not 2 only i have this old galaxy S which i think needs a replacement :cyclops: few days back i saw this galaxy note 2 in a show room since then i doubted whether to buy such a big phone or not but now i think i will buy it as soon as i collect enough resources i mainly use android phones to play games

If you want an android phone for gaming I'd recommend a T3 device like the HTC One X+. T3 has exclusive THD games however Gameloft games don't work as well as not optimised properly for T3.
None the less GN2 is still packing some gaming power behind it.

A simple answer to your question is. If you are buying a smart phone now, than buy Note 2. Why settle for something less, when the next big thing is already here. Lol

Hello mates.Im still thinking of buying this tab,but why is his popularity so low? I mean not many roms,topics etc about it in forums.. Is there anything wrong with it? Havent seen the tab yet(only reviews),only saw and played with ipad mini,but I think this one is better.Would you advice me to buy it and why?

Yes...go for it. I' ve replaced my Note 2. 7' Tab is small and 10' is too big for me. 8' Note is not mass market product, but just in between Note 2 and Note 10 solution with perfect performance and everyday use/ carry around. I use it as well as my primary phone, navigation, multimedia and personal computer.

The "problem" you see here relates more to the very niche market for a device like this in its price range when compared next to something like the Nexus 7 and even Samsung's other 7 inch tablet. So on price alone, its going to struggle a little when you have so many quality options for half the price in many cases. For example, the iPad mini is $100 less, you could buy 2 Nexus 7 16GBs, or hell, I've seen referb Nook Colors going for $60 so you could almost buy 7 of the damn things. What they all lack, however, and what sets this apart for those that need the feature is the Wacom digitizer. Yes, that little pen is the source of the fuss. If you're the sort of person who values hand written notes or loves to doodle in a way that no other tablet in this form factor is capable of (even with a third party stylus), then thats all the reason you need to pick up the Note 8. Other reasons would include the super thin body or large screen size (or you have some creepy love of IR blasters), but the pen is the point here.
This all means, sadly, that we won't ever enjoy the flood of rom options other devices enjoy. Sure, there will be some in time, but I'm not holding out for a solid, feature filled port of Paranoid Android. Instead, I'm doing with the majority of Android users are and just making due with what I have and honestly, the things I love outnumber the things I hate about TouchWiz.
At this point, I can't see myself ever going back to a "normal" tablet again (which will really suck if they don't make another one lol).

I helped organize a Nexus 7 32gb 3G for my mother, and was suitably impressed with it.
I also own a HTC Sensation... which I was also suitably impressed with 2 years ago when I bought it.
I also have to my name an i5 Desktop + Wacom Cintiq 12wx.
So, yes, you guessed it... I like digital art / image manipulation. I also enjoy keeping journals and 'writing' stories... yes, WRITING, not 'typing'... when I sit infront of a keyboard and see the words spill from my fingertips in clinical neat text, it kinda kills the creative process for me...
So you can understand that the note 8.0 *BLEW ME AWAY*
It's as if someone out there decided to design a device *just for me*. It's the perfect size, perfect weight, so comfortable to hold, handwriting recognition is superb, and the sensitivity of the S Pen is second only to the Cintiq experience...
All i need is a means to fine tune the sensitivity of the S Pen for my drawing style and I believe I would actually prefer the Note 8.0 over the Desktop+Cintiq as a drawing medium.. I've only had the tablet for a few days, so I may still be able to figure out how to do this. If, however, the calibration must stay as it is... it is still an excellent drawing experience and, as I said, second only to using a full-blown Cintiq.
Like others here I'll never be buying a tablet again that doesn't at least match the features and convenience of the Note 8.0.
I'm very excited to see what they do with the Note 8.0 v2 + v3... and if for some odd reason, this is the first and last in the series... I'll be keeping this tablet... and keeping my eyes open for developments in the Surface Pro line (it's still too bulky/heavy to be a concideration for me at this point in time).
Bottom line:
Are you an artist / designer and do you prefer handwriting over typing?
If yes, then I can see no better option for you in this form factor. The price is well justified.
If no, then although it is a superb tablet that trumps the Nexus 7 in every way... the price will be hard to justify. If you're not going to put the Wacom Digitizer to work for you, then only buy this tablet if you have money to burn.

In fact in my country and my calculations for the 3G version price is likely the same.The only thing I love in Ipad mini is the app store (many many apps) and the accesoaries for the Ipad (docks and etc) If we remove this the Note 8 has everything.
I`ll think a little more and maybe decide the Note 8.It will cost me like 450~500$ with a contract for 7$ per month for one year and Im getting 3000MB high speed 3G.
Here the Apple Ipad Mini costs like 500~550$ ,but without any contracts .

As others have said. The price of the Note is almost purely based on the Spen / digitizer technology with in it. To decide if it is worth it, you need to decide if the added functionality that technology brings is of benefit to you.
If you dont draw, or dont think you will be taking hand writen notes, then there may be little benefit of this tablet over a cheaper android alternative. My advice is, if you want to use the Spen, then the Note 8.0 is the perfect companion, if you dont, wait for the new NEXUS to be announced and either buy the older 7 at a discount or wait for the newer one (or do the same with the ipad mini. cant be too long before a newer version is announced).

Thanks for the link! After reading that... I'm a little nervous about possibly screwing up the sensitivity that I have - after all, there's nothing *wrong* with my pen, it's not wonky at all... I just would love to be able to map out the pressure gradient curve like I can do via software for each of my Cintiq pens (I have them all - Airbrush, 6D Artpen, Grip Pen and Classic)... So I'm going to continue looking for a software solution. But if one doesn't turn up, I'll probably buy an extra S Pen to fiddle with mechanically.

Do you own any other Apple products? Have you already made significant purchases in the Apple app store you want to use on your tablet?
If not, and it's just a case of which is the better tablet... Go for the Note 8.0.
In my opinion, the iPad Mini and GNote 8.0 are not even in the same class of device.
iPad Mini is appropriate for the mass-market consumer who is primarily concerned with consuming content. It's easy to use, especially for people who are not all that technologically skilled.
GNote 8.0 is aimed at power users, creative professionals, and discerning creative hobbyists who are primarily concerned with *creating* content... but who also want a top class media consumption device as well.
If you have any interest in creating content, then it's a no-brainer.
But like I said, if you aren't really going to use the Wacom Digitizer all that much... then the iPad mini could be the right device for you... even though it makes me cringe recommending an Apple product to anybody.

You need to check with whoever you are buying from. As far as I was aware, the gift card was only available to US residents.
As I live in South Africa, I got other extras... such as a free Official Stand Pouch, a 16gb MicroSD card, 2 year warranty, and two months free internet with MWeb (which i'm not using as I'm with another service provider - I bought mine outright, i.e. not on contract).

Bingo. The Android tablet market is dominated by low priced, low spec devices (at least in the 7 to 8 inch form factor). And this has worked to get Android tablets into people's hands and steal market share from the iPad. The N8 is targeted towards users who actually value a premium device, and are willing to pay a bit more. Unfortunately, we are in the minority.
Yes, the N8 is not going to sell in huge numbers, and that means less developer interest. But all that is needed is a few good developers. We already have some good looking contributions, and this will continue to grow. My previous tablet was the HTC Flyer, which arguably had a worse market penetration problem than the N8 has. The Flyer was more expensive ($499 US at release), and the tablet market was much less mature at the time (much less people interested in buying tablets). The Flyer sold in very low numbers. But even so, it had a fair number of very good developers, and a decent number of ROMs. More than sufficient, IMHO. In the end, you don't need dozens of ROMs. Just a decent selection of good ones.
I don't see the trend towards cheap Android tablets changing anytime soon. The Note 8 is easily the best Android tablet around in the "smaller" (7 to 8 inch) form factor, and I'm willing to bet that will remain the case for some time.

That is just it. This tablet is NOT just about the pen. It is a really fast tablet too. Much faster then the Nexus 7 or just about any other tablet out right now. It is smooooth. The screen is the perfect size too. I had a Nexus 7 and returned it because I couldn't stand how slow it was. I have a note 2 and it is nice to actually have a screen large enough that the multi window feature may actually get some use too.

As a consumer, I love my Note 8 (speedy, responsive, relatively okay battery life, etc everything else ppl said)
As an Android/Linux dev, I lament the fact that because this thing costs so much, it is just statistically less likely to get huge momentum behind it.

I don't know, from a practical point of view this tablet is a better buy than an ipad mini. It does cost a little more than an entry level mini but does the mini have expandable storage, usb otg support, multi windows and a pressure sensitive stylus. If I were Joe Public I'd certainly consider getting one as it offers quite a bit more value for just a little extra investment.

I sold my Note 2 ans Ipad Mini 64GB and replaced them with a Note 8.0 w/ 64GB SDCard and am much happier now.
As for the $25.00 Play Store credit , That is for the WiFi model only checks serial # ( US Only ? ) . 3G versions do not qualify.

Then I saw a promotion on Note 10.1 which is the cheapest I've ever seen. Well, the difference between Note 8 and Note 10.1 prices is only $28 (Note 8 as more expensive). Both of them only wifi version.
Considering the image quality, the updates, the lightly fast processing, the light weight and new technology on Note 8, I really don't know what to do. I mean, 149ppi of Note 10.1 is really annoying and its weight is not comparable to Note 8 (but the weight is not a really problem to me).
On the other hand, I'm just thinking if I would be pleased in watching videos, reading books or other results with images (photo, games) with the 8" screen. What would be better in general for you?
P.S.: The Note 8 wifi only has a samsung official update (on-the-air) for Android 4.2.2?

I'll attempt to help you out. Never used a Note 10.1 but have read many posts from users that have both. Most feedback is exactly what you stated. Note 8 has a better screen, speed/smoothness, and feel to it. As for reading books I'm not sure but for me the 8" screen is about the perfect tablet size. If you use the tablet at home primarily than a 10" tablet would work out fine. However if you plan on carting the thing around my opinion is the 10" tablet is a bit cumbersome.
As far as I know there is no official Samsung 4.2.2 release. The build being used currently is a beta leak. However, I'm running a 4.2.2 custom rom and it is 100% stable, has floating multiwindows like the Note 10, and is smoother than 4.1.2. The Note 8 may never see an official release because Samsung might just jump right to 4.3. I would think something should be released in the near future.

I was convinced to get Note 8 when I saw this promo that put the choice in my personal view and not exactly in the price.
I would like to get around with my tablet as I'm doing some academic works and I would use it at home for entertainment since my notebook can always do the hardwork here. I do work with video so I would like to get a nice screen for viewing pics/videos, image quality is pretty important here (considering the Note 10.1 screen). I have another doubt about web browsing (I'm putting this things cause I've never tried both tablets on my hands), but in video reviews the Note 8 seems to get it done as well.
I'm voting on Note 8 as I only think in Note 10.1 for its screen size.

I was wrong about 4.2.2 obviously. Did not realize some 3g models were currently getting that rolled out.
What I meant was since 4.3 is already out some manufacturers such as HTC are choosing to bypass a 4.2.2 release and go straight to 4.3 on certain devices. Thought this could be a possibility for some Samsung devices as well.
As for web browsing on the Note 8, I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly it loads web pages. I have an S4 as well and the Note is much faster.

If you don't do much reading... and don't need spen ..get the nexus 7 2013. ..it has an amazing screen and the speakers are awesome... and the price and updates are unbeatable.. (just got it too)

I have a tab10.1 and a note 8.0.
I use both for:
Internet, Email, movies, games. reading books and magazines.
Advantage 8.0: Weight, size
Disadvange: The only real disadvantage compared to the 10.1 is when reading magazines. Have to zoom in a lot and then lose track
8.0 goes on travel, I find the 10.1 to big for on the road.
Im just comparing form factor, not the actual devices.

pakure: I'm choosing Note series for reading and Spen for writing in first place and to see as well if I can do some others creative works with the Spen. Anyway, I will be watching a lot of stuff ocasionally and gaming but I'll be primmarly focusing on Spen and reading/writing. And getting a good use of its quadcore.
HANSB57: Yeah, I like your comparison from having both options. I like the portability for travelling and walking around with it. I would really like a Note that would be possible to carry around a lot, everywhere. Something light but with a screen able to do multitasking, easy to write/read, to anotate, to watch videos and to edit imgs.
I have two days to make my choice and now I'm going on Note 8.

I understand! Since my option is N5110, I'm on wifi only on 4.1.2. I'll be waiting that future update to really come. Let's see what Samsung is capable of. It shouldn't exist that kind of OS politics. It's such easy to get these updates in new devices.

After knowing your device requirements,......I suggest you get the note 8.

I have three last important questions! I need to read PDF as results of books scanning. Is it fine to read these PDF files that are in landscape orientation? I mean 2 pages side by side in one landscape pdf page. Is it possible to read at least holding the Note 8 in horizontal view?
The second question is that I read about a 32gb microSD size limitation at samsung official user manual. But in gsmarena (for example) I can see the limit up to 64gb. Well, I would like to know if is it possible to put a 64gb microSD on Note 5110.
And the third one is about the speed limit. Which should be the ideal speed for getting a microSD card? Thinking about external read/write maximum speed allowed.

I have owned the 10.1 and now the 8.0. Writing is fine on either device. I'm taking college courses at night and I prefer the 8.0 for portability. The speakers are way better on the 8.0. My biggest issues of the 10.1 was the screen, being bigger but the same resolution as the 8.0 was just blurry enough to be annoying. It's a bigger issue than one would think. Also its hard to hold without being in the way. where as the 8.0 is nice for ebooks and surfing the net.

1. i think you need to zoom it a lil bit. depend on the book size... if the scan book are big you might not see it.
2. 64gb class 10 working fine. i use it on my note 2 and this note 8

I used to own a Note 10.1 and now have the Note 8.0.
I would say it's a slightly better experience drawing and writing on the 10.1 because of the extra screen size.
Multi window is also more useful on the larger tablet, battery life is longer and speakers are louder.
The 10.1 also has a true tablet ui while the Note 8.0 has in effect a phone ui.
Having said all that I sold the 10.1 once I got the 8.0 for the following reasons.
As others have mentioned the 10.1 is just blurry enough to be annoying. It is more of an eye strain to read text on it than it is to read it on the Note 8.0 inspite of the larger physical size of the screen. Also the colour rendition seems better on the 8.0. The 10.1 colours seem slightly washed out in comparison.
There are times where I feel a little cramped writing on the 8.0 but these moments are hardly worth worrying about in comparison to the advantages of the smaller form factor. The 10.1 is more cumbersome to carry around and it's significantly heavier so it starts to get tiring to hold after a time. The 8.0 is also much easier to type on while holding it in portrait mode. While holding it in both hands your thumbs can easily reach all the letters.
The 8.0 also seems smother overall. The 10.1 can exhibit a little lag at time, for instance a slight delay when trying to switch apps via the recent apps button. It's still a good performer but the 8.0 is just very slick and smooth almost all the time.
Battery life on the 8.0 could be better but it's enough to get me through an 8 hour day on a full charge. I guess Samsung had to make a trade off here - a bigger battery would mean more weight and thickness so the device wouldn't feel as amazing as it does in the hand.

I own both tablets. I just got the 8" because I used to have a tab 8.9 and I thought that was the perfect size for a tablet. This one is close, more similar to a moleskine notebook.
I'm a graphic artist and honestly the resolution never bothered me on the 10". Sure you can definitely make out the pixels, just move the screen an inch away or, as a personal trick I use an anti-glare screen protector. The suddle fuzziness blends the pixels together removing the aliasing that everyone hates. Plus it makes it look more natural (prints are not extra sharp), less reflective, helps finger gliding and gives a feeling of paper when using the pen.
That said I think the 8" is better for being more portable. And that's all you really should want from a tablet. Also the pen is slightly smaller but more round and easier to hold.
I'm currently using it with a SanDisk ultra 64gb sd card and it doesn't have any problem reading it. (Both tablets didn't).

dr.mOX: yeah, once gain 10.1 battery and screen size seems to be the point to make this decision sounds hard. But for Note 8 being smoother, newer and lightly portable is what should matter. I'm thinking over and over, but each time I look around it really looks like a certain decision on Note 8. As what you've said, trades are made for better experiences in another ways. For the Phone UI, it's a little thing, but it's a different thing. Anyway, it should be fine in portrait mode.

if you are not happy with your ipad for lagginess then dont even bother buying, rooting helps but no where smooth as ipad2&3 on ios 7.1, especially on chrome and handling pdf & xls & docx. General UI lagginess is expected to be fixed with an update.

I own a TMO LG G2 so I may be able to give you a reference point. The G2 is damn smooth in EVERYTHING. You know that. This tablet is not smooth everywhere, its just not. But it is damn close in *most* areas.
Here's the breakdown. TouchWiz is the only somewhat laggy part of this tablet. I personally don't spend much time within TouchWiz, because most of my time is within an app. Inside apps, this thing flies very nearly as fast as the G2. Impressive, given the higher res screen. Games are very fluid, Boat Browser and UC Browser both offer exceptional speed and fluidity for browsing, and optimized apps, as with anywhere else, make the biggest difference. If they are optimized, then this tablet will chew through them like butter.
If you plan to use Nova launcher, etc. Then you will have no issues of slowdowns with this tablet. With those launchers, this thing flies, and you still get to keep all of the sPen features, which realistically, is probably why you are buying this anyway. If you weren't, you could get a tab pro cheaper, but probably not refurbed.
For notes, SNote is slow, for me at least, but LectureNotes is a fantastic alternative that offers fast, fluid note taking and is very reliable for classwork or the like.
If you are the type to use ROMs, I hear that there are some awesomely smooth options like CleanROM which retain the SPen features and touchwiz, but optimize it for smoothness.
By the way, a couple of things you should know if you end up purchasing this tablet. First, the speed of the tablet increases greatly after about 4-5 days, depending on your usage. Also, the battery life improves significantly after 2 weeks of use. At the beginning, this tab would drain about 10 percent over 8 hours, and now it consistently drains about 2% over the same time period.

I wouldn't go near the Samsung. Between the random (supposedly fixable) bluetooth issues, the lag and the lack of updates this tablet was/is pretty much a rip off. I've been a heavy Android user for years but it pushed me towards getting an iPad air. I have to say I'm really happy with the iPad and haven't looked back. It's a pity because the display is absolutely gorgeous and I really liked the pen input. It wasn't enough incentive to deal with all of the other issues however.

Well... My experience varies. Seems like my note 10.1 has good and bad days. Sometimes performance couldnt be better, everything flies and the battery life is excellent but there are days, when there's noticeable lag and battery drain... My best on-screen time was 10 hours, the worse was 5 - while I didn't use it any differently in either cases, so that is strange. The lag you're so curious about is only in the launcher (touchwiz for the win), apps usually perform very well. As far as updates go, I only received one so far since I got the device (2013 december), so I can't really say anything about that.
Would I buy it again? Well, I'm aware of the limitations of iOS, but I never had a chance to try out an iPad for a longer period of time, so I'm not sure how it would fit my needs. This leaves me to pick an android device, and I have absolutely no doubt, that the note 10.1 is definitely one of the bests. Is it the most fluid experience? No, touchwiz kind of ruins that, but hey, you can always replace that with Nova or something that fits you. In terms of functionality, I'm sure that you can't go wrong with this, you have android+samsung features, which leaves you with an endless pool of possibilities. Even if you don't need the s-pen, the hardware in this device is amazing and with future software updates, I believe it could be on par with the smoothness of the iPad Air. So my answer is yes, I would buy it again, despite the occasional stutter which is present due to touchwiz. The battery life certainly could be better, but it will last you a full day with heavy usage, I usually recharge mine after 3-4 days (I'm not a heavy gamer, I use the tablet to take notes, read and edit pdfs, browse the internet, send emails... etc). The average on-screen time I'm getting is around 7-8 hours with 30-35% brightness (oh yes, the screen is REALLY bright).
In the end of the day, it really comes down to this: do you want to use android? If yes, go for the note 10.1 2014 edition without any hestitation. If you think you could live with iOS (you can always jailbreak and cram out some more functionality) and you don't really need the s-pen, by all means, go for the iPad Air, both of these tablets are absolutely amazing products.

I totally agree with what @compumasta said about lag. There's occasional lag in transitions and app openings/closings but everywhere else the device is fast. You can do some pretty resource intensive things on the N10.1-14 that you can't do with any other device. I open two My Files instances side-by-side in multi-view and drag-and-drop files from my home server via FTP to my N10.1-14 and vice-versa. You can use Air Command to launch Scrap Book and copy pages or snips of content from an app or the web. You can get a spinning wheel occasionally while the device is processing. But it's pretty amazing that something as small as the N10.1-14 is able to do work-horse productivity work at all. If you're a productivity or creation user there's nothing that can touch the N10.1-14. The more I push it the more impressed by it I am.
But are you a productivity and creation user? For consumption and games the N10.1-14 is overkill and the ton of processes and threads open in the background at all times to support its unique and resource intensive features do sap some of the power of its high-end h/w. If you're not interested in those features you might be better off with an iPad.
The new Tab/Note Pro's are running 4.4 with some pretty major updates to Samsung's s/w and apps. Even with that reviewers have pointed out the same transition lag discussed above. My N10.1-14 is definitely not as smooth as my N3 but, considering its pushing three times the display area, it's a small price to pay for such a productivity powerhouse. But if you're lag obsessed you might want to think about what you're willing to live with and I wouldn't pin my hopes on updates changing anything dramatically based on the new Pro's performance.

I agree with you. If appearance is important then the iPad is the way to go. If, however, one chooses function over form the I'd choose an Android in a heartbeat.

I couldn't help but respond to this. I'm at a coffee shop connected to their Wi-Fi editing a document in Hword while responding to you in a multi-view browser window using a BT mouse and keyboard while watching Amazon Instant video in a pop-up window with audio provided by a BT headset. Some folks have had BT issues but mine's been better than any device I've owned and it has been that way since the day I got my N10.1-14.

Lot of negativity here^^ It all comes down to your personal needs, but I would instantly buy it again. It just offers everything I need. Most of my friends have iPads so I've seen what they can do. Ipads have some very nice apps that aren't (yet) available on Android. That is the ONLY upside of the ipad in my opinion.
Lag isn't an issue at all for me (Nova Launcher+root) and there is just soo much you can do with the Note 10.1 where the iPad has very hard limitations. I'm not gonna list them all because it has been listed many times before and it's pretty obvious imho. The iPad is a big sized ipod touch while the Note 10.1 is almost a full PC with pen support.
But if you're just gonna read some news and watch the occasional movie (4:3 screen can be annoying) on your tablet and want something "apple-nice", why not go for the ipad.
If you expect something more from a device like this, something that goes into the direction of laptop replacement, the Note 10. 1 is the way to go. Especially if you like handwriting and sketching.
If you need even more productivity you might wanna look at the Surface2 pro. Or wait for the Surface 3. A collegue of mine has it and he is very happy with it, he does all his IT stuff with it. But it has some downsides (size, weight, battery life, windows).
So for me the tablet world atm comes down to this:

For me the note 10.1 is the sweetspot.

I was looking at a couple of QHD tablets, and the Note was the lightest one with the smallest bezels. I had the Note 2 and almost never used the SPen, so I might have bought an equivalent Galaxy Tab if they had one. As it turns out, I use remote desktop all the time, and the Microsoft Remote Desktop app is hands down the best rdp app... but only if you have a stylus. So I was glad I got the Note after all. And the screen is absolutely gorgeous. With Nova Launcher, there's no lag.
The biggest drawback is so-so battery life that's worsened by the slow charging on the Exynos version. Also, it's a little awkward to hold in portrait mode because of the physical buttons.
If I were shopping for a tablet right now, I would get this or maybe the Note Pro, but probably the 10.1 because of the weight. I might also be inclined to spend even more money on the 4g version for the faster charging Snapdragon supports.
I have zero interest in an iPad, so YMMV.

Yes I would buy it again, it's one of the best android tablets ever made. The issue is with the Samsung bloat which can be adjusted to your liking. My liking was to remove all the extra things I don't want, will never use, and were stealing resources. I can tell you the new crop of Roms have a much much better kernel which I am using and most of that random microstutter is gone. Buy it and try it, if you don't like it sell it and move on.....

I sometimes wonder , How do ipad ios guys survive without a File Manager , Drag and drop data functionality etc that every one is pretty much used to on Windows Pc's .
I love Ios for the look , but its restricting me in quite a few ways and have to find workarounds to do simple PC like tasks .
Anyways , Do any of you guys use the tablet as A Pc ? As on use the file browser .. open files with any program , move files to your desktop from the tablet just like a usb .. or just download some songs .. rt click save as .. etc .
Dropbox is great .. but why keep connecting to the internet everytime when in Android you can save it locally ..
Appart from that the Spen is unique , thats another thing.
I do crib about the stutter n see if it can be made better .. but give up some freedoms for beauty .. just can't do that.
Android is like that rough around the edges clumsy friend but who has a big heart .. imho .

I have a wife so I want Kitkat. Back to serious. I have owned many android tablets and this is far and away the most capable. It has more features to allow for productivity than any non windows device available. I despise Apple and their locked down overpriced ecosystem. Having said that if you are looking for a productivity and gaming/consumption device there is nothing better than the Note 10.1 2014. If all you want is a consumption device go with one of the Tab Pros or god forbid an Ipad.

I'm in the market for a tablet for gaming/consumption and have had my eyes on the Galaxy line, originally the Tab Pro 10.1. However, where I'm from, the Tab Pro 10.1 WiFi model and the Note 10.1 2014 Edition are the same price. I'm not so sure that I'd get the most use out of the S Pen, but might find the multi-tasking ability handy. Would you recommend just grabbing the Note 10.1 2014 over the Tab Pro 10.1 simply for the added functionality that it has to offer?

Absolutely if they are the same price. The internals are basically the same, the Pro is just running 4.4.2 out of the box. I did not realize how much I would use the Spen.

[Q] Should I keep my Note 10.1 2014 or move on?

I have been a Samsung fan for a long time. I had the original Note 10.1 and loved it. I have had my 2014 model since it came out, so about 15 months now. I use it for business all day long and keep all of my client notes on it. I use it to consume media and the occasional game. I do not think I am rough on it but like I said I use it about 12 hours a day.
My issue is that it seems to be riddled with problems all of the sudden. Almost like it was not built to last. I did not think at the time to buy an extended warranty because I have never had an issue with Samsung quality. Now that I am 2 months out of warranty I have the dreaded black screen of death issue, which I have fixed several times by opening the device and disconnecting the cables. Now when it happens I do not have to open it up , I just press on the back a few times and it fixes it. The S-pen detached message is now a problem due to the s pen not making contact with the sensor which causes the screen to kick on making my battery drain because I do not see the screen on while in the case.
So my question is
1. Since I use it so heavily should I expect to replace it more often? Should I buy a new one and pony up for the square trade (or better) extended warranty?
2. Should I upgrade to the 12.2? Does it fix some of the problems that seem to be inherent to the 2014?
3. Do I bail all together and go with w Surface Pro 3? ( Really don't want to do this because I have the Note 3 phone and sync my notes between it and the note 2014. The note 3 phone may be the best phone I have ever had.

It does sound like you've used your note pretty heavily and the problems sound like physical wear & tear. You definitely need a device that stands up to your use patterns. Spen will always be a point of wear with prolonged use, so other notes will prob see similar life spans in that regard. I have had note ii over 2 yrs and haven't used the spen the amount you say you have (I only used the spen for a prolonged, 6 month period- every day for class notes) on the note tablets, so I haven't ever experienced these problems. Other questions you have I cant answer.
Edit: so I guess all I can answer is; you will now probably have to expect getting a new device more often since you use them heavily. Although, I really would have thought these tab/phablets to last longer

Im in a similar situation as you. My screen is not working anymore. It has like a 10% chance of turning on. Im going to send it in and see if they repair it. If I have to pay I will open it up and have a look myself.
I have had 4 samsung tablets. The note 10.1 is the first tablet that has broken on me like that.
I also own a 12.2. I think it has a better build quality. It doesnt have the bubbles under the screen. I think they fixed some engineering errors that the 10.1 has.
I would consider selling the 10.1 and getting the 12.2 in your place. Im considering getting a second 12.2 as well.
Personally I dont see a benefit in a microsoft surface opposed to the note 12.2. Windows is not a touchscreen OS and its not fun to use. I only use my tablet for taking handwritten notes and the Samsung note series is the best at that specific task.

I recently sold my Note 10.1 2014 for a Surface Pro 3 and will never look back. Nothing beats having a full desktop OS in this form factor. I am a student and use to use my Note for handwritten notes extensively. I always found the experience super frustrating. Firstly, a TON of websites that my school required me to use wouldn't work on a mobile browser. I tried everything. Different browsers, sideload flash, etc. Yes, the note was more of a productivity tablet than any other android tablet, but a lot of the productivity features felt extremely half baked.
Onenote. Full stop. /thread.
Once you have used Onenote on the SP3 there is nothing that compares on the android side of things. I used LectureNotes all the time for in class note, and it is AWESOME software with an AWESOME dev, but it just isn't capable of the same things that you can do with OneNote.
I have to disagree with you about windows not being a touch friendly OS. No, it isn't made specifically for touch, but it works to be sure. Until you use Windows for a couple of days on a touch device, can't really say it's terrible.
Anyway... I don't want to sit here and laud the Surface Pro 3 all day and detract from the overall topic sounding like a major fan boy, but in the week that I've owned it, I feel it has EASILY replaced my Note and even exceeded my expectations. This too is coming from a super huge android fan that thought android could do what any other OS could do by a long shot. I was super resistent to joining another ecosystem as I've used android exclusively since 2009, but I'm glad I did. OP, the ultimate decision is yours. Try a SP3 for 14 days and return if you dislike. I will say for me, it was time to move on from Samsung's Note line. With their locked down software and terrible update history...
Done.... I swear.

Forgot to add, I think you can get Onenote for android now with support for handwritten notes. It would sync automatically with your SP3 if you purchase one.

Maybe moving for the NEXUS 9... What you guys think?

What makes OneNote better than similar apps on an android tablet? I watched some video reviews on the Surface3 and most reviewers say that OneNote has lots of features but what are those features?
I for example have a laptop and 2 android tablets. I really miss some kind of instant sync feature of notes between the devices. Open documents as tabs and a way to split the screen like in adobe PDF pro would be cool too.

Basically when your in a note taking session, any webpage that you open and anything that you research is automatically tied into the notes.
The recording also works better than Lecturenotes. One of the biggest frustrations that was alleviated for me when switching to onenote was the importing of pdfs. I get huge PDF powerpoints from my professors and it always took a good 5 minutes to be imported into lecturenotes. With onenote it's almost instant.
Just overall the whole experience of note taking and school work is just better on a full blown PC. I know there are a lot of work arounds for android to make certain things work, but with SP3 I just don't feel that limitation at all. It makes for a liberating experience. Like wearing a latex suit all of your life and then joining a nudist colony

It sounds like you have similar usage as me and knock on wood I haven't had any issues besides the battery not lasting as long as it use to. I personally love the S Pen and nobody else has that function so switching platforms wouldn't be ideal for me.
If my tablet were to break I would look at the 12.1 or pick up a refurbished 10.1. with an extended warranty.

If you can get it fixed, I would keep it. I'm in a somewhat similar situation, but my Note isn't broken. I've used this thing for over a year and loved it. A couple of weeks ago I bought a surface pro 3 and ever since then I haven't touched the Note.
If you can't keep it, I would suggest moving onto a Windows tablet/hybrid if you value productivity. Many people will probably disagree with this, but it depends on what you want to use it for. Yes the Surface is much more expensive than the Note, but there are alternative Windows hybrids that are cheaper. If productivity is your main use, then I believe that Windows is way more superior, and aside from the Android games, it has all the media capabilities and more.
I noticed that there was some mention of writing on PDFs. In my experience, I haven't found very many apps that are smooth and good for taking notes on the Note. Windows has a few apps that can do this much better (Xodo Docs which is free and Drawboard which is 9.99). They offer a much smoother experience imo.

Totally agree with this. As far as productivity is concerned SP3>Note. Once Console OS is released...this thing will be a wet dream come true for me.

on day 5
I made the switch to the surface pro 3. Too soon to tell (sending this on my 10.1). Out of the gate was an issue with defective keyboard connection so had to return. Went to Microsoft store (did not buy from them) and customer service was incredible. Replaced tablet without question and went much further to make things right. I will give full review in few days after i get more acclimated

The thing is all those other comparable tablets are alot less mobile. More weight, more size, less battery.
I think the note 10.1-2014 is still the best device in its category. I'd love something better but for my needs there isn't. Maybe the first win10 tablet from MS will be the thing. Because samsung is just getting worse and worse..

It's the only thing they have left to tempt me as well. Here's hoping that they do something with the Android client.

FWIW, on your next tab (whatever that is) think about getting an extended warranty from SquareTrade. I used to be pretty skeptical about extended warranties because of bad experiences, until I tried SquareTrade. Very good service, and the prices are reasonable. Now I buy on most big electronics purchases and have never been disappointed with the investment.
