[Q] Will OTA updates make me lose root access? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi - I installed an OTA update that forced me to restart during the initial setup. Once I rebooted, a prompt for a second update came up. Since then, I've already rooted my device without downloading the second OTA. Will I lose root or TWRP if I download the OTA?

I didn't. It just booted to TWRP and then I rebooted into system and still had root.

SuperSU update after 4.4.3 OTA

My 4.4.3 OTA installed just fine this afternoon and I immediately grabbed the latest SuperSU .zip and installed it with TWRP to get re-rooted, but after I told SuperSU to get itself re-installed from Google Play, it wanted to update the binary, and the "normal" method wouldn't work, even after a couple of reboots and retrys.
I don't have TWRP installed on my Nexus 7, instead just using fastboot to boot it when I need it for something, so the technique that finally got the binary updated was to tell SuperSU to use the TWRP update mode, then when it I got the popup saying it was about to reboot to recovery, I plugged in the USB cable and ran:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.0-flo.img
That worked. As soon as TWRP booted, it installed the script SuperSU had prepared for it, and the binary was indeed updated.
I never had a problem with the "normal" binary update method before. Something new and "helpful" in 4.4.3 I guess.
You can share the script SuperSU?

[Q]New OTA update

I am using the LS980 on GSM every thing was fine i got an OTA (190MB) when i rebooted to install ,twrp was there and every time i reboot it boots to recovery how to boot back to system?
never accept an ota update with a custom recovery, thats just asking for trouble. What your going to need to do is reflash the rom you had on there. (may have to sideload it if its not on your internal memory in the phone), otherwise you will have to tot back and sim unlock your phone again

TWRP & Official OTA

Today I just received a system update notification, so I click update without even thinking.
But after OTA was downloaded, the phone was rebooting into TWRP, I suddenly realized that I didn't restore the stock recovery...
So I guess the update should probably fail, however, I saw TWRP is under going some OpenRecoveryScript process instead...
After a couple minutes, the process finished. So I choose reboot in TWRP, then the system started up successfully (took a long time).
And it seems that the system was updated successfully as well...
So TWRP is now supporting official OTA? Or is there some magic tricks going on?
My m10 is SuperSU rooted (systemlessly) and with TWRP installed.
It does not work on my htc 10, TWRP 3.1.1.0 update from 2.41.401.4 to 2.41.401.41

Can't unroot, Supersu reappears after reboot

I want to unroot the phone in order to update (as I haven't for a very long time), already flashed the stock recovery back but when opening SuperSu and using the full unroot option (which seems to work) till rebooted and SuperSu returns as does root access preventing me from doing the updates. I have unchecked superuser in the settings then full unroot etc, even tried deleting busybox / su from bin and xbin then superuser.apk via guides and still root returns the moment it's restarted. Any ideas how to get rid?
In most cases for this device, you can NOT unroot in order to OTA update. You need a stock never rooted ROM. Either restore the stock ROM (TWRP backup) you made before you rooted (and you should always make a TWRP backup before root, custom ROM, etc.); or otherwise restore a stock TWRP backup from the collection, following the instructions here:

Question Issue with the March update

So I had Magisk. I uninstalled it via the app, preformed a system update, then avoided the reboot, installed Magisk on the OTA partition and rebooted. This got me into fastboot mode multiple times until my phone booted. Now I booted up and I am in the Feb update partition with no Magisk. How do I root and update without losing my data?

Since you are having problems with updating via OTA, suggest either using flash-all method or Android Flash Tool to update to March build. Then patch boot image using either Canary 24301 or Stable 24.3. Make sure to disable mods before rooting.
No such thing as a match update

I would use the Android flashtool and download the factory image , patch the boot image then flash it in fastboot. No loss of data, just make sure you don't check any of the boxes like 'wipe device' or 'lock bootloader' in flashtool settings
I just flashed March. Used all old school flashed with latest adb and fastboot
Disabled all the magisk modules just in case.
Patched March update boot file in Magisk
Had the update for Magisk and did not do it at this point, as I had heard people having issues with that.
booted into bootloader Flashall.bat removing -w
booted into phone, waited for update to finish in the notifications.
booted phone back into bootloader, installed magisk boot image
Booted phone back up
enabled all magisk modules
Updated magiskapp, then updated root via direct install
Rebooted phone
And all good
