Hi All,
I'm sure many of you checked out the Android 4.3 / Nexus / etc. announcement today.
OpenGL ES 3.0 is being touted as one of the big features of 4.3. I did a quick search and noticed that our phone w/ the Adreno 225 does not support OpenGL 3.0.
I'm curious - how do you guys think this will affect our experience for this particular Android version (assuming we eventually get it from Samsung... :fingers-crossed? I'm trying to understand if the graphics / battery life improvements are dependent on GL 3.0 or not.
Thoughts?
Doubtful sammy will update the S3 with 4.3, I'm interested in what the AOSP devs do with this version though.

That'd be pretty brutal. Even the GS2 went from 2.3 -> 4.0 -> 4.1.

Me too

One of the other "perks" of 4.3 is support for Bluetooth low energy.

The galaxy sIV will almost certainly be getting 4.3, so I think the galaxy sIII will too. But it will be missing a few of those features ofcouse. Thought when using samsung roms, it doesn't really feel like I'm missing anything.

The S3 has gone from 4.0.4, 4.1.1 and 4.1.2. I would love to see even 4.2.2 on the S3. From what I've read there have been speed bumps along the way for TW for whatever reason.
If 4.3 is that much different than 4.2.2, I seems presumably less feasible that they'll have a chance at getting to work with TW.
Fortunately 4.3 is only fairly minor, under the hood changes
I just really hope that our phones don't get killed on 4.1.2

I suppose my argument was the SII had 2+ full API-level updates. The SIII has only had 1. (4.03-04 to 4.1.x).
If Samsung has problems getting TW working properly with new versions of android, they are going to have some big problems on their hands, at least with more knowledgeable / enthusiast users.
The crystal ball is showing GSM nexus devices in my future instead of this bullocks ...
No 4.2.2 for S3 will go straight to 4.3 and it will end there.
I'll believe it when it happens.
Also, OP, there are like 5 threads related to 4.3 in some way now

so did the s3 ever get OpenGL ES 3.0 or not by 4.4.2?

Just thought I'd ask since nobody else did. I really hope they fix the audio latency issues and improve the stock email client. Keeping my expectations low since ICS has been so great already. All that needs to be fixed is the foundation of the Android OS so that longstanding issues go away.
It will probably be 4.0.5. You really think they'll name it 5.0 just for those small changes.
My money is on Jellybean being 4.1, not 5.0. A whole point release implies a complete redesign, whereas I really think they wouldn't do that twice in a row. ICS is a good base, and needs refining, not a complete overhaul.
will probably be 4.1 or 4.5 version
Any source that it will be announced next week?

I'm thinking that as well, but publications are calling it 5.0 so I called it that as well.
For such a short period of time from releasing ICS, I don't think they'll name it 5.0 as I assume there won't be any changes. 5.0 would have to be something revolutionary like honeycomb
Think of Eclair, Froyo and Gingerbread, they were 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 respectively and were very much alike. I hardly think Jelly Bean will be THAT much different from ICS to need a new whole number (say 5 or 6).
It'll most likely be 4.1. Not 4.0.X.

Jelly Bean?
Where'd you get this information?
Flipboard isn't doing its job. I should know these things!

There was that leaked photo of the possible Asus Nexus tablet running 4.1. So I am putting my money on Jellybean being 4.1.
4.1
Little changes, performance improvements, some new functionalities and services announced.
That is what I expect.
How long do you guys think Android will stay at 4.X? Considering that only 7% of devices have 4.x, it could be another 2 years before we see a rollout of the 5.x series.
Definitely 4.1 which is what the Nexus 7 tablet is running.
I've done tons of homework on it.

I don't think that the carriers lack of pushing out the updates will stop googles improvements on their operating system.
I'd also agree that it'll probably be 4.1. I can't see Google releasing a 5.x bump so soon after ICS. Jelly Bean will probably be the Gingerbread to ICS' Froyo.

Ics looks like that if you want. New ui is not what i waiting for jelly bean.
Hey guys, I'm coming from an i777/iPhone 4S and I'm extremely excited for this device to come in. I'm going to keep it stock rooted for a few day I think, but after that, what do you guys think I should flash? Thanks ahead of time!
before u get addicted to features and get to comfortable with the look of ICS,
Flash the BRAND NEW JellyBean OS. It will feel stock and u won't have to worry about adjusting and comprising like I did.
I'm kinda behind on JellyBean. If anyone knows a JellyBean OS rom with Features like hiding the Soft keys and Notification toggle please recommend.

For the person who asked the Question may I ask what model ur using??? GSM, Verizon, or Sprint.

It wouldn't be worth all the smali work involved. The source will come soon enough.
good day.
OP, since Jelly Bean *JUST* came out, there are two very clear choices:
Option 1: Stay on ICS - Pros: More features, more customization, tons of roms and mods to choose from. Cons: Not as smooth as JB, no Google Now, basically no JB awesomeness. (side note: the most popular ics rom on the gnex is AOKP, next most popular is cm9.)
Option 2: Move to JB - Pros: Super smooth will all the cool new bells and whistles of Jelly Bean, Cons: Just released recently, no custom ROMs, very few mods, a lot less customization.
So basically choose between super customization+modding (ICS) vs. stock with super smoothness and newest android features (JB)
I'd say play around with ICS for a few minutes than flash JB. Sure, it is currently not the most feature filled, but it's fast as can be and Google's new features are nice. And really, you don't need all the random features AOKP and CM9 have. A couple widgets accomplish the same thing most times.
I say play with ICS for a few minutes first if you want to see the speed increase. It's apparent.
How easy is it to unlock/root the Nexus? Just curious, as Android phones before this required exploits and workarounds with the exception of the i777.

JB is the best drug! Even though its a developer preview, it is still the best piece of Android software I have ever ran, and I've used Android 1.0-4.1, all kinds of Sense and TouchWiz, and every device from the G1 and N1 (and, I sheepishly admit, an iPhone 3GS). This beats them all.
OP:
Can't tell you what to flash...
But read my sig (or stickied above) to get yourself unlocked and rooted.
It looks long...but it'll truly take you ~30-40 minutes.
HTC One X PLUS was had poor wifi reception in my home. Wifi Analyzer shows 20 dBm signal drop when you hold phone in your palm. Not with S3. All good now. But miss Sense + Jelly Bean 4.1.1. I know Jelly Bean stock update is probably happening within the next days/weeks for S3?? I'm a Power User but got everything on the HTC with JB to work the way I wanted using Widget Locker and Nova Launcher. HTC stock keyboard much better so Swiftkey 3 wasn't even necessary. Definitely need Swiftkey 3 on this 4.0 Touchwiz phone.
I spent hours and hours learning Android and setting up the HTC. Don't want to spend all weekend again. But also would like to be on 4.1.x. I was an iPhone Jailbreaker so I'm not afraid of rooting and/or custom ROM but I will be very frustrated with bugs or losing useful features just to get a custom ROM. I'm sure this has been asked 100 times but I think I've explained my usage goals enough to get a decent recommendation? I think a main goal if I do go custom ROM is I want the one that is the most established meaning, most likely to still be around as new devices are introduced 1, 2, 3 years from now. I'd prefer to not keep having to learn the quirks of a different ROM, but I'm also not married to Samsung Touchwiz.
a) Stick with ICS and wait for official JB update and just live with it?
b) Install JB 4.1.2 Custom ROM that is closest to stock? Which one?
c) Wait for stable custom ROM that is based on JB 4.2?
If (b) can someone post a link to the "Custom ROM for S3 Newbie Guide" ?
Thanks in advance.
My advice would be to test out some of the popular ROMs around here, such as: CM10, AOKP, AOCP, etc. There are also ROMs based on TouchWiz with rooted features that have been debloated.
I personally have been using Task650 AOKP for a while now. It offers great performance, battery life, customization, and stability. He offers great support and updates.
Ultimately only you can decide which is right for you as they're all slightly different and we all have different needs from our devices.
Read around the development sections and you'll find something to suit your needs in no time.
Task650 AOKP 4.1.2 JB. 11/18 Build
Underwear kernel (Intellidemand/Deadline)
Well after spending at least 25 hours setting up that HTC (much of it was first time using Android Learning Curve and getting Questions answered and app suggestions.) I'm sort of burnt out. I started reading and reading and reading more here and ran across these two threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869300&highlight=grey+7
And although rooting seems like no big deal, it seems there really isn't as far as I can tell a JB ROM that doesn't have at least some issues or lacks some Touchwiz features that may be missed?
I'm leaning toward (a) Wait for official 4.1 update. Should be any day now?

Is there a stable Touchwiz based ROM, debloated, based on JB 4.1 I should consider? I really am not interested in "custom" I'm just interested in as close to stock Touchwiz ROM but just JB instead of ICS. And something that when Official OTA update is out, I can switch to that if desired.

Head over the development section, not original just development and check out the thread started by Drewgaren. I haven't personally tried it as I prefer AOKP, but I've heard it's a nearly perfectly working JB TouchWiz based ROM.

This looks like what I would want. This video seems to confirm:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzJR3I6nLvA
But is there version for I747 and there's no issues?
Does the official OTA update require a reinstall and reconfig of all apps?
After skipping around all 742 pages of the CleanROM thread (geez) sounds like exactly what I want. Problem is, it's for Verizon I535 S3, not the AT&T I747 S3. So what's the closest thing to CleanROM that works for AT&T I747?
I think that Frosty JB and Black jelly ...both are bug free Tmobile ports. Both are stock...or near stock touchwiz. Frosty is straight stock and black jelly has a few mods/ theme ...but they both have been flawless for me. You can find them in the SGH-I747 development section easily. I have tried all the ao•p original ROMs and they all had some form of compromise.

Just wondering seeing as the Nexus 4 has pretty much the identical hardware as the OG and is running 4.2 JB already. what are the chances our LGOG will get 4.2 instead of 4.1. i am assuming the JB 4.2 rom for the N4 can be modified with just a few tweaks to run on the LGOG. the LG software should run on 4.1 or 4.2 without issue right? wishful thinking i guess

I believe current issues are different partitions, different modems, and different kernel, i also think once we get 4.1, 4.2 will *unofficially* be ready quickly since 4.1->4.2 is not as big of a change then 4.0->4.1
i could also be 100% wrong but that's my 2 cents
It is my understanding that the most important thing that is holding us back from Jelly Bean is the kernel. We are running a 3.0 version of the kernel (excluding the Koreans which got the 3.4 Kernel along with Jellybean 4.1.2). The source for the 3.4 kernel will be released very soon (think less than 1-2 weeks) and then you will see an explosion of AOSP, CyanogenMod, etc. because that kernel is on par with the Nexus 4 with very minor changes. 4.1 - > 4.2 has no kernel changes, making porting a walk in the park.
Hang in tight, this is the calm before the storm.

For the F180L device (the one I own) the new official release is 4.1.2 version 20h and the leak was 20f so its slightly updated at least.
For F180K the update is 20B and most interesting thing, chinese geeks got it a week ago but i was unable to download it
I know there are people on here who have had a lot of Samsung Android smartphones. I also know that Samsung isn't the most reliable when releasing updates for the current phones when a new device is about to be released. That is extremely frustrating when Samsung says they will give their customer base a new version of the Android OS, but then drop the updates or say they will give a set number of devices the latest version, but only keep their word for 2 out 3 devices. So my question is... Who on here thinks that we will get Android 4.3 this year and who thinks we will get it nest year?

Honestly I don't think it matters when it's released. Because soon as there's a leak out there for, some new firmware. The DEVS around here are going to be all over it. And we all know that. So I think that everyone should just sit back and wait a month or so... We should know something by then.

I for one, don't see why we need a 4.3 update. Run a 4.2 and 4.3 TW ROM side by side and you won't notice any difference. Samsung replaces the stock lock screen with it's own (bye bye lock screen widgets). And if you enable lock screen widgets, it's all messed-up, you a minuscule place to touch to switch to the next widget, so most of the time you end up going to clock settings.
Quick settings panel is really changed and at least for me TW notification drawer toggles are a lot more useful.
If you want 4.3 just run an AOSP ROM, you'll get the full experience.
Google has done a great job by starting to update core apps and apis through play store apps.
And IMHO 4.1.2 is a lot better than 4.2.2 which brought a lot of bugs memory leaks and lag.

You may get the full experience, but at what costs? Only the Manufacturers coders know how to tune the ROM to not be a battery guzzler. Only the Manufacturers coders know how to make a the ROM 90% stable. But some of us actually use the Samsung-only apps like S-Note. Sure Samsung has really messed up the overtime with the Android OS (I miss being able to turn off touchwiz). I've used Vanilla Rootbox, PAC-Man, CyanogenMod, AOKP and Paranoid Android and all of them leave something to be desired. The only thing PA has going for it is HALO and Per App DPI, outside of that it looks and feel just like every other aftermarket AOSP ROM.

Either you have never used AOSP or you have not used a recent 4.3 build, they are pretty much rock solid, almost zero bugs(TW ROMs are full of bugs also), and battery life is the same as a TW ROM.
And I tend to use non-OEM apps just so I have the liberty to change ROMs whenever I want. Papyrus has worked great for me
