Yes there is hope!
To unlock it you probably just need to flash an older modem.
You're using a model SGH-T999, right?
Confirm this before you do anything!
Once you know the model I might be able to help you further with both the unlock and imei problems.

If by bad IMEI, you mean it is blacklisted, then there is not anything we can do. The tools wont allow it and even if they did, it is not something we are allowed to do on XDA. Even if you bought it legitimately from someone else, it will still be considered stolen property.
If this is not what you mean by bad IMEI, go ahead and PM me with the following information:
Device Model
Current Rom
Current IMEI state (dont post the actual IMEI)
How was the IMEI initially lost?
Explanation of what you mean by "bad IMEI".
Thanks!

Your not the only one.
I bought my S3. T999 on eBay and when my wife tried to use it through t mobile, they said it was blacklisted due to non payment of phone.
I did some research and found out this is quiet common for people to get the no contract plan then ditch the phone when something new comes out IE s4 or S5 . I am currently in the process. of returning the phone to the seller. There is supposed to be a IMEI generator but I haven't found the software pieces to make it work.
It turns out that I really like android software and enjoy reading the tXDA threads. You can change the IMEI , but like Doc said , "there is really nothing they can do on this forum". Check. U tube and again watch for the scammers .
Dan
Changing the imei in almost all cases is very illegal. Also these devices have built-in checks they run on things like the imei, and if changed often results in instability and other odd problems.
I am very sorry to hear when this happens, few things get to me these days, but this is one of them. I wish carriers and authorities would do more to prosecute those who do. First, its outright stealing from the carriers, then they turn around and steal more from normal everyday people! Its theft by deception in both cases. Just because its stealing from a carrier that they often see as rich and evil, doesn't make it right! But that's how they justify it in their minds.
I do wish I could help in situations like this, but unfortunately there's just nothing that can be done.
Do your best to contact the seller to get your money back. If you can't, leave a scathing review on their profile or something and then report it to the police.
Your best option if you can't get your money back though, is to just resell the device, honestly. There are plenty of people that will still pay a decent amount for a blacklisted Note 3, provided its in good condition.
You'll probably take a bit of a loss, but you just have to chalk it up as one of life's more expensive lessons.
Sorry we can't do more....

Hi Doc, can you help me with the same problem?
I bought a T999 and it is unlocked because I can use other SIM cards but only on GPRS, not 3G. And also don't have data. Access point name is correct. Today i checked IMEI and it displays just /12 instead of the long number.
I don't really know how the IMEI was lost but i have tried flashing the firmware via ODIN and still the same. No IMEI.
Check swappa, and other sites and call T-Mobile to see if the imei is blacklisted.
Also, what is your firmware and baseband version?

1. Yup, attempt to get your money back.
2. Find out who it's blacklisted with and call them, they might actually give you some money towards a non-blacklisted one.
3. Be less then honest and use it as a glorified mp3 device.
Basically you're asking how to get a stolen phone working. How would you feel if you were the victim who had their phone stolen?
Do the right thing man. And next time, if someone is selling something way cheaper than anyone else is, that tells you you're going to lose out in the end if you get it

So in order for the OP (or any of us) to avoid this in the future. What is the best way to check if an IMEI is blacklisted before obtaining the phone? Can we call any random carrier and do it, is there a website we can use, or is it just a risk we all take buying used devices?

What if they list it for a regular price?
You can call the carriers customer service prior to buying, you may need to do this for each carrier as most carriers don't share black list databases. If the seller won't give you the imei to make the calls first, or the imei they gave you doesn't match the phone, don't buy it.
Also, turn the phone in. A 100 dollar loss is better than jail time, and yes it is possible if that phone is reported stolen, and you're caught with it - chances are if you tried to activate it and found out it's black listed, your carrier knows you have it.

That's easy to do with a CDMA Galaxy Nexus, since there are only 2 carriers.
(Verizon and Sprint)
However, the OP bought a GSM Galaxy Nexus. Wouldn't he/she have to call
every GSM carrier around the world to verify the IMEI? Or do GSM carriers
share IMEI blacklists with each other?
If you are in the US, then it will be fairly easy in the near future:

try with different simcard from the same provider so unlocking isnt needed and you can check or it is your sim or phone.

In the US T-Mobile is now blacklisting imeis of people that buy their phone on a payment plan and then stop paying. They are also blacklisted occasionally when reported stolen. These phones sometimes make it to online sellers and work for a while then stop because the original owner stopped paying there bill.

Hi... This is my first post here. I have a sprint galaxy S3 and I want to swap it for a GSM galaxy s3. So what should I do? I just call Sprint and ask them to stop the service? how will the person buying my phone port his/her sprint number to the S3 I sell them?
Just sell it on eBay or something. If the account is in good condition, no problems. If not, Sprint will flash the phone. If you advertise it, make sure you post the esn is clean (assuming it is).
You want to be sure all your account info is wiped. It's more than a factory reset. I don't know how to do it, but I suspect Sprint could tell you how. They helped me when I was activating my last used phone (mopho).

Thanks! but how do i find out if it has a good or bad ESN? I'm using the phone right now and I don't see any such message. But is there a specific way to find that out?
What's ESN? is it IMEI?
If you are using it, you have a good ESN. If you let the account with a debt Sprint will give you a bad ESN or easier, your phone will be blacklisted, and nobody would be able to use it, unless they flash to another carrier.
In other words
GOOD ESN = More money.

it's white color. I don't know how much to ask
I used it for like 2 days and i got my nexus 4 shipped now. So I don't want this one.. I thought nexus will never get shipped. I will now go for tmobile $30 100 minutes plan.. that's why I'm selling it
You have to close your account with Sprint, and pay the current bill. Then you can sell the phone and the person have to make a account or change current device with Sprint, but not use the same number.
Sent from my O=O
Read the ESN (many programs that can do.this) and if it matches the number on the battery then you have yourself a 'good' ESN
If you have had it to days I would jyst return it. Cancellation is 350 if youve had it less than 6 months with sprint. You got a 14 day return policy. Or if you dont care about your credit put an old Sprint phone in place of the S3...that will free up the ESN to use for someone else and just not pay your bill.

Well it seems that CL may have finally gotten the best of me...
I bought a TMO GS3 T999 from a CL seller. I went to the TMO store and got the microsim. I got home to realize that the sim was still not registered so I contacted TMO. I was informed that the phone was blacklisted for being reported stolen.
What are my options now? Can the phone be unlocked and used with StraightTalk?

The TMO chat agent actually suggested that I get it unlocked and use it elsewhere. She even gave me a website to try so Im guessing they arent that concerned about it.
Anyways, back on topic. If it is unlocked, can it be used with StraightTalk? Or because I would be using a TMO StraightTalk sim would it be blocked?

Due to site rules I can't tell you how but everything else I gotta say is legit so please no haters. You could change your imei (which I've been actually
thinking about getting a bad imei gs3 and test this out) and should be able to get service but I don't know about 4g. Technically since tmobile doesn't
use aaa passwords but sim cards you should be good. I would suggest you back up the nv items and so fourth then test it out.
P.S I'm not attacking anyone with this but did want to say people that made comments like unlocking is illegal or similar remarks do nothing but waste time and don't help anything. also it's a moderators job to handle those situations. p.s I won't be back in this thread for awhile if ever so please don't troll it up to prove a point to me. Hoping you guys can give me a hand. I'm fairly new to the GSM side of things. Too many years wasted on Sprint. hehe
So I picked up a used 32GB Galaxy S3 from some guy on craigslist ($340). it was in great cosmetic shape and i tested it before making the deal by making a phone call (with my SIM). it worked, deal made. we picked up a new SIM, i unrooted (it was kind of a mess), did a full factory wipe/reset and performed all the official t-mobile updates.
the device works fine and can make calls without issue but will not switch to HSPA even when my Nexus 4 and daughter's GNex are on HSPA+. It remains stuck on edge.
Galaxy S3 T999
IMEI matches with the IMEI on the back of the phone
Most recent baseband version (T999UVDLJC)
Flash counter showed 15 but status is normal and allowed me to run t-mo updates. i didn't bother with the triangle away app when unrooting since i did not intend to take it in to be serviced. i just wanted it back to stock for the wife.
I ran through all the troubleshooting with the t-mo tech support and nuthin'. Any ideas/suggestions?
thanks fellas. and yes, i did try searching for this problem. the closest thing i found was people talking about a corrupt IMEI number but the IMEI seems to be fine.

What happened is the phone lost its IMEI and the previous owner did not have a backup of it to restore properly. This means he had to inject the IMEI, which has caused people to lose 3G/4G connectivity. This thread should help you out.

hey bro this worked for my t-mobile s3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121736 use *#0808# on your phone to get to the menu if the other one doesnt give you the correct options.
Thanks bro. It didn't work for me.. I got stuck on step No. 18( MY imei didn't show so I couldn't verify and continue).

I thought u could put it in manually where u select your carrier (maybe not mine was already there). *#06# will tell you what your imei is if you don't know it.
Good luck, keep searching the forums you'll get it. It took me days.

I'm aware but it doesn't show my imei.. It shows me only 2 numbers and when I check through phone settings, it says unknown.
