[Q] Blacklisted? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Well it seems that CL may have finally gotten the best of me...
I bought a TMO GS3 T999 from a CL seller. I went to the TMO store and got the microsim. I got home to realize that the sim was still not registered so I contacted TMO. I was informed that the phone was blacklisted for being reported stolen.
What are my options now? Can the phone be unlocked and used with StraightTalk?

That sucks but....
Changing IMEI is illegal and can not be asked about how to change on XDA.
Sell it for parts is the only thing I can think of.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did not realize it was illegal. I will move on from that topic then.
Can the phone be unlocked and used with StraightTalk or a similar service?

Another problem with that, as of Jan 26 in the US it is illegal to unlock a phone unless the Service Provider sends you the unlock code.

Look guys I think the law is a bunch of Bull also. I was not trying to come off as a bad guy, just point out some of the problems. Yes it will be overturned but it has not been done as yet. All you guys jumped at me like some kind of Gang. Meant no harm was just passing on information.

The TMO chat agent actually suggested that I get it unlocked and use it elsewhere. She even gave me a website to try so Im guessing they arent that concerned about it.
Anyways, back on topic. If it is unlocked, can it be used with StraightTalk? Or because I would be using a TMO StraightTalk sim would it be blocked?

Due to site rules I can't tell you how but everything else I gotta say is legit so please no haters. You could change your imei (which I've been actually
thinking about getting a bad imei gs3 and test this out) and should be able to get service but I don't know about 4g. Technically since tmobile doesn't
use aaa passwords but sim cards you should be good. I would suggest you back up the nv items and so fourth then test it out.
P.S I'm not attacking anyone with this but did want to say people that made comments like unlocking is illegal or similar remarks do nothing but waste time and don't help anything. also it's a moderators job to handle those situations. p.s I won't be back in this thread for awhile if ever so please don't troll it up to prove a point to me. Good luck jayeggs

I got screwed by T-Mobile. They sent me a warranty replacement S3 with a bad IMEI. They told me that my phone was reported stolen from the past and asked if I stole it. They have some gaul if you ask me.

I have a HTC amaze that is a few weeks old, love the phone, just want to try a GSII.
Im looking to trade mine, Zagg with a D30 case for a WHITE T989. Id pay for your shipping.
Mines rooted with BeastMod, but could do what ever you want to it.
Dude, I just bought an HTC Amaze 4G AND a Galaxy S II from a dude on craigslist for 400 bucks total. lol I laughed on my way back home. I then sold the amaze for 400. lol
id make sure they werent stolen, cant imagine that seller got those legit. Just sayin
he said it was his and his wives, but since they were switching carriers and that he no longer worked for t-mobile he was selling them. let's hope they weren't stolen. now if they were, what happens?

Any phone transaction should always take place at a store where they can verify the ESN/IMEI in person. If the seller isnt willing to meet you there then you should see the red flags flying from a mile away.

I just read somewhere, if the IMEI is blacklisted on a network, its only on THAT particular network. I can still use it on other networks (such as AT&T, which is whom i'm with).
that is correct.
Ok back on topic, someone trade me their white SII
back to the op..... white t989 are hard to find. they been backordered for quite some time.
ill never give up
i wanted the amaze over the galaxy s 2 but i heard it has alot of problems in some thread i forgot where
i really dont have complaints about it. Just cant quit drooling over the deep blacks of AMOLED

It's never activated though, I just tried it in my Unlocked iPhone 3GS and it shows T-Mobile logo with full network signal. Obviously i cant make any calls since it's not activated. But it still shows the network. Shouldn't this phone show network if you put it in there? Thanks

Blocked IMEI

So I did the dumb thing and got a GN off of Cl for 100 bucks which to me was awesome but I found out that the imei was blocked. I know what ppl are going to say and I knew it was a bad idea myslef but it didn't cross my mind the whole imei thing. Now I have a perfect nexus that I can't use. Its a GSM unlocked version by the way. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

1. Yup, attempt to get your money back.
2. Find out who it's blacklisted with and call them, they might actually give you some money towards a non-blacklisted one.
3. Be less then honest and use it as a glorified mp3 device.
Basically you're asking how to get a stolen phone working. How would you feel if you were the victim who had their phone stolen?
Do the right thing man. And next time, if someone is selling something way cheaper than anyone else is, that tells you you're going to lose out in the end if you get it

So in order for the OP (or any of us) to avoid this in the future. What is the best way to check if an IMEI is blacklisted before obtaining the phone? Can we call any random carrier and do it, is there a website we can use, or is it just a risk we all take buying used devices?

What if they list it for a regular price?
You can call the carriers customer service prior to buying, you may need to do this for each carrier as most carriers don't share black list databases. If the seller won't give you the imei to make the calls first, or the imei they gave you doesn't match the phone, don't buy it.
Also, turn the phone in. A 100 dollar loss is better than jail time, and yes it is possible if that phone is reported stolen, and you're caught with it - chances are if you tried to activate it and found out it's black listed, your carrier knows you have it.

That's easy to do with a CDMA Galaxy Nexus, since there are only 2 carriers.
(Verizon and Sprint)
However, the OP bought a GSM Galaxy Nexus. Wouldn't he/she have to call
every GSM carrier around the world to verify the IMEI? Or do GSM carriers
share IMEI blacklists with each other?
If you are in the US, then it will be fairly easy in the near future:

Can i switch to a Japanese carrier?

I see this as unlikely, but would i be able to bring my phone to japan and place it on one of their carriers? Ive read they use cdma, but how much does that matter when it comes to radios or bands? I just bought this phone and found out a week later i will be moving there in november. Not too happy about this since i paid retail for this beast.

It's called unlocking and basically unlocks your phone so it can use any carrier. Now it's illegal in the US but call up your provider ask and for the unlock code anyway. Say you have to go there in a couple of day and you need to use the phone. Normally they'll give it to you via email and the instructions are included in the email. All you would have to do after you unlock the phone is replace the sim card and you'll all good to go. Now don't go online and buy the unlock codes from websites because most of them are scams and even though some might work, its not worth giving them your credit card number and then be in deep yogurt. Hoped this helped

You can probably get kddi mobile in japan to add your esn for you. I'm almost positive they use the same 3g frequency as sprint, however I doubt you'll be able to get lte.

If kddi won't add the esn, you could get a cheap phone thru them and flash your note with cdma ws or find another mvno that will add it. Now that sprint and softbank are looking at a partnership I think softbanks carrier's will accept sprint phones for Americans that come over without too much hassle. Japan has a large cdma network (largest outside of US) and use the same frequencys and sprint as vzw so 3g should be no problem and neither should finding someone to add your esn over there. They're pretty good about letting Americans use their own devices when they come over.

that is absolutely correct.
i took it to TMOBILE yesterday and the rep couldn't get it to work. so he told me "i have never seen this happen."
so i took it to SOLAVEI and paid for the service already!!!!
i just called tmobile and 5 reps told me that the phone was reported LOST. and that the owner was sent insurance replacements. i was told that if the could get a hold of the original owner and ask him to call tmobile, or get his old phone number that they will unlock the phone for me.
the 6th rep. which was the "highest ranking" told me that she could not find my IMEI on the network.
i called the guy i traded with on craigslist. the guy tells me that he only used it on ATT cuz it is unlocked. and that he got it from someone else.
imma just tell the guy to trade back or imma take him to small claims court.

If by bad IMEI, you mean it is blacklisted, then there is not anything we can do. The tools wont allow it and even if they did, it is not something we are allowed to do on XDA. Even if you bought it legitimately from someone else, it will still be considered stolen property.
If this is not what you mean by bad IMEI, go ahead and PM me with the following information:
Device Model
Current Rom
Current IMEI state (dont post the actual IMEI)
How was the IMEI initially lost?
Explanation of what you mean by "bad IMEI".
Thanks!

Your not the only one.
I bought my S3. T999 on eBay and when my wife tried to use it through t mobile, they said it was blacklisted due to non payment of phone.
I did some research and found out this is quiet common for people to get the no contract plan then ditch the phone when something new comes out IE s4 or S5 . I am currently in the process. of returning the phone to the seller. There is supposed to be a IMEI generator but I haven't found the software pieces to make it work.
It turns out that I really like android software and enjoy reading the tXDA threads. You can change the IMEI , but like Doc said , "there is really nothing they can do on this forum". Check. U tube and again watch for the scammers .
Dan
Changing the imei in almost all cases is very illegal. Also these devices have built-in checks they run on things like the imei, and if changed often results in instability and other odd problems.
I am very sorry to hear when this happens, few things get to me these days, but this is one of them. I wish carriers and authorities would do more to prosecute those who do. First, its outright stealing from the carriers, then they turn around and steal more from normal everyday people! Its theft by deception in both cases. Just because its stealing from a carrier that they often see as rich and evil, doesn't make it right! But that's how they justify it in their minds.
I do wish I could help in situations like this, but unfortunately there's just nothing that can be done.
Do your best to contact the seller to get your money back. If you can't, leave a scathing review on their profile or something and then report it to the police.
Your best option if you can't get your money back though, is to just resell the device, honestly. There are plenty of people that will still pay a decent amount for a blacklisted Note 3, provided its in good condition.
You'll probably take a bit of a loss, but you just have to chalk it up as one of life's more expensive lessons.
Sorry we can't do more....

Hi Doc, can you help me with the same problem?
I bought a T999 and it is unlocked because I can use other SIM cards but only on GPRS, not 3G. And also don't have data. Access point name is correct. Today i checked IMEI and it displays just /12 instead of the long number.
I don't really know how the IMEI was lost but i have tried flashing the firmware via ODIN and still the same. No IMEI.
Check swappa, and other sites and call T-Mobile to see if the imei is blacklisted.
Also, what is your firmware and baseband version?
