I see this as unlikely, but would i be able to bring my phone to japan and place it on one of their carriers? Ive read they use cdma, but how much does that matter when it comes to radios or bands? I just bought this phone and found out a week later i will be moving there in november. Not too happy about this since i paid retail for this beast.

It's called unlocking and basically unlocks your phone so it can use any carrier. Now it's illegal in the US but call up your provider ask and for the unlock code anyway. Say you have to go there in a couple of day and you need to use the phone. Normally they'll give it to you via email and the instructions are included in the email. All you would have to do after you unlock the phone is replace the sim card and you'll all good to go. Now don't go online and buy the unlock codes from websites because most of them are scams and even though some might work, its not worth giving them your credit card number and then be in deep yogurt. Hoped this helped

You can probably get kddi mobile in japan to add your esn for you. I'm almost positive they use the same 3g frequency as sprint, however I doubt you'll be able to get lte.

If kddi won't add the esn, you could get a cheap phone thru them and flash your note with cdma ws or find another mvno that will add it. Now that sprint and softbank are looking at a partnership I think softbanks carrier's will accept sprint phones for Americans that come over without too much hassle. Japan has a large cdma network (largest outside of US) and use the same frequencys and sprint as vzw so 3g should be no problem and neither should finding someone to add your esn over there. They're pretty good about letting Americans use their own devices when they come over.

The One X international unlocked is only for certain GSM frequencies. Well, mainly only AT&T right now in the US.
Verizon uses CDMA and I think US Cellular does too. So it wouldn't be compatible at all and you'd have a brick on your hands.
AT&T, Red Pocket, or Straight Talk.

1. Yup, attempt to get your money back.
2. Find out who it's blacklisted with and call them, they might actually give you some money towards a non-blacklisted one.
3. Be less then honest and use it as a glorified mp3 device.
Basically you're asking how to get a stolen phone working. How would you feel if you were the victim who had their phone stolen?
Do the right thing man. And next time, if someone is selling something way cheaper than anyone else is, that tells you you're going to lose out in the end if you get it

So in order for the OP (or any of us) to avoid this in the future. What is the best way to check if an IMEI is blacklisted before obtaining the phone? Can we call any random carrier and do it, is there a website we can use, or is it just a risk we all take buying used devices?

What if they list it for a regular price?
You can call the carriers customer service prior to buying, you may need to do this for each carrier as most carriers don't share black list databases. If the seller won't give you the imei to make the calls first, or the imei they gave you doesn't match the phone, don't buy it.
Also, turn the phone in. A 100 dollar loss is better than jail time, and yes it is possible if that phone is reported stolen, and you're caught with it - chances are if you tried to activate it and found out it's black listed, your carrier knows you have it.

That's easy to do with a CDMA Galaxy Nexus, since there are only 2 carriers.
(Verizon and Sprint)
However, the OP bought a GSM Galaxy Nexus. Wouldn't he/she have to call
every GSM carrier around the world to verify the IMEI? Or do GSM carriers
share IMEI blacklists with each other?
If you are in the US, then it will be fairly easy in the near future:

I found this. it may enable more than just roaming on GSM. I haven't read the entire thread or tried it myself well cause I has T-Mobile.

However from what I read.. seems you would be better off selling and buying T-Mobile (or possibly at&t if your area has T-Mobile 1900MHz) off Craigslist.

The TMO chat agent actually suggested that I get it unlocked and use it elsewhere. She even gave me a website to try so Im guessing they arent that concerned about it.

Due to site rules I can't tell you how but everything else I gotta say is legit so please no haters. You could change your imei (which I've been actually
thinking about getting a bad imei gs3 and test this out) and should be able to get service but I don't know about 4g. Technically since tmobile doesn't
use aaa passwords but sim cards you should be good. I would suggest you back up the nv items and so fourth then test it out.
P.S I'm not attacking anyone with this but did want to say people that made comments like unlocking is illegal or similar remarks do nothing but waste time and don't help anything. also it's a moderators job to handle those situations. p.s I won't be back in this thread for awhile if ever so please don't troll it up to prove a point to me. Here's the deal, Today i went to Wal-mart to get a new phone for my wife. I decided on the T mobile Samsung galaxy S 4 (on the Wal-mart family plan $40 a month unlimited) . unfortunately, it apparently does not get signal at my house. What i desire to do is move it to straight talk. because Verizon does have signal at my house. So from this point, is there any way to get this Galaxy S4 to see the Verizon towers and work on the Straight talk network using those Verizon towers? And If So, Can someone please post the step by step instructions (without assuming that i know what a jailbreak or unlocking is) so that i can make my wife happy.
Please and Thank you in advance for all your responses and help!!

Can't be done. T-Mobile is GSM, Verizon is CDMA, incompatible networks.
Straight Talk resells service for the major carriers but for Sprint and Verizon, who are CDMA carriers/networks, you have to get phones compatible with CDMA to use on Straight Talk and vice versa for T-Mobile and AT&T.
ok how about this

Neither the T-Mobile nor AT&T variant will work on Verizon. Period. There isn't an unlock you can do, no ROM you can flash, no special code you can put in to change that fact.
For ST or Net10 to use the Verizon towers you need a CDMA phone, which the M1919 S4 is not. As was mentioned in the post above mine, you DO have the option to run off of T-Mobile or AT&T networks either through the respective carriers or use those towers via Net10 or Straight Talk; but using the Verizon towers in any way is impossible with the particular device you purchased.

Hello all.
As you can see by my name, Im'a Noob! i have a good understanding of computers and cell phones and can follow directions well but have not attempted anything like this so....

Where'd you buy it? I bought mine from TMO and was told I can return it within 30 days for a full refund. As others have posted, you can't do what you want with that phone, period.
Edit: Reread your original post. If you have to have Verizon then the phone you bought won't work. Just like a AM radio won't pick up FM stations. It's that simple. Take it back to Walmart and get a refund. BUT, if you can live with using T-mobile away from home and have wifi at home you can get a T-Mobile plan and use wifi calling and internet access at home, and the TMO network elsewhere. You want to use wifi at home anyway because it doesn't count towards data or calling usage. It's all seamless, so there's no problem using it that way.
Dude seriously I find it hard to believe you don't have Wi-Fi in your home. Because if you do, your problems are solved. Your phone supports Wi-Fi calling and messaging (SMS/MMS). This is why I switched to T mobile.

You can sim unlock then activate with at&T but the signal won't work well all because every carrier use different frequency bandwidth it won't be the same

If you say you paid $650 for it today, then why not return it for a refund if you don't get TMobile service at your house? Why are you suffering yourself all this turmoil?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe the AT&T and T-Mobile variations are able to pick up 100% of each other's bands so this argument is invalid.
