[REQ] app/mod to reduce compression on Photos - One (M7) Themes and Apps

would be great to get a mod/app like this for the HTC One, there is one for the One X which really worked brilliantly (IQ was at least 20% up on stock). hopefully one of the brilliant developers will pick this idea up and take it further, thanks

There are some camera mods around, i think one of them improves the quality of the photos.. Did not try so can not tell you which one...
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2

there is nothing for the HTC One though, due to its ultra pixel technology it'll need a mod developed specifically for it

here's one from the HTC One X maybe this could be used as a basis for a similar mod for the One, (no compression and no/little noise reduction) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2339226

That's not really any help though, Personally I'm not going to install that ROM just to get the Mod ... Is it just the Camera.apk that's modded do you know or are there other files in the ROM that are needed, like libs etc.

Hi,
You will need the media_profiles file also because the two "ImageEncoding quality" lines and the two "ImageDecoding memCap" lines are modified...
In attachment the file from Insertcoin rom, remove the .txt extension...
Thanks to baadnewz for the mod (I hope we can post the files outside its rom,, if not I delete it and all my apologies), credits to him, source is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2279766...

thanks Viking, I have no idea what to do with the file you sent, can you explain (I'm no techie at all), so one cannot just add in the 4.2.2 Camera apk to sys/app, (I assume you cannot replace the stock camera.apk with this 4.2.2 one?) So one has to also revise some of the media profiles settings (any idea how to do this)? thanks.
The ideal would be that someday someone could develop a flashable file that just adds the compression settings to the stock camera apk.

Cheers mate, will give it a test
Edit: Made a custom flashable zip with the xml and the camera apk and installed fine, will test and see if it's any better

ok so I replace the camera apk in Ordroid with the Camera apk from insert coin, add the gallery apk from insert coin mods folder and then replace the media profile xml in ordroid with the one you provided?? will that do the trick? thanks again for the help

Hi,
Meanwhile the zip from AllAboutTheCore() remove the .txt extention from the file I've posted, put in in your "sdcard" then with a file explorer copy it to system/etc and set the correct permissions like this, then reboot and you're good...
Before all make a Nandroid backup!!!
EDIT: same thing for the Camera.apk file, but copy it to system/app set the correct permissions (same as above) then reboot in recovery and wipe dalvik-cache...

if it makes a difference please share the zip, I'm a bit lost with this technical stuff, but love photography hence my request, a stupid question: cant one just edit the media profiles xml of the standard camera apk and adjust all 3 to 100% (image encoding, instead of 70/80/95%), wont that make the photos have less compression?? thanks
EDIT: I tried the above, didnt change any apks or anything, just went to the media profile xml and changed image encoding to 100% for all 3 options (instead of 70/80/95%) kept decoding at 30000... and image size went from 600KB to 1.3 MB (same image), will have to check but with much less compression IQ (detail) should be better I guess

Here it is .. If Baadnewz wants it taking down I will .. I further edited the xml to change both 720p and 1080p recordings to 2 channels instead of 1.
Credited Baad in the zip aswell
http://www1.zippyshare.com/v/72631252/file.html

thanks will try (have you noticed any difference?), if you read my post just before your last one, does what I have done make sense (just kept the original camera apk and change the media profiles xml file?) would that also make the compression less?

Not noticed a difference yet tbh but I'm sat in my bedroom so nothing really to test it on lol .. Yep I understood what you meant, not sure how it works though as if it was a case of changing them all to 100% for the best results, I would have thought that's what Baadnewz would have done but I'm not completely sure

hehe, not sure either but fun to play around, I can say that the file sizes are roughly 40 to 50% bigger now, which means compression is less which should improve IQ (in theory)...

[Q] who wants to help me change swype keypress sounds???

i hope someone will...
im using a glass crack keypress image for my themed swype & i have a glass crack .ogg sound file i want to use but it wont work
what i changed was the KeyPressAries.ogg found in swype.apk under assets, i found the sound file i wanted to use & changed it to .ogg renamed it to KeyPressAries, & replaced it using 7zip & all it did was lose the keypress sound...
I don't really know anything about anything lol but I have heard of things like this being sensetive to the size of the file especially something like the keyboard which may remain loaded and need to be cached. Try to get the size of the new file the same or smaller than the one you are replacing.
Again this is random speculation but it makes sense to me...

Yeah, I did a little googling for you. Try convert to mono if its not already. Beyond that I use audacity to do audio editing. I work on IVR systems and sometimes they are sensetive to bit rates and such so if you want to send me the file I can give it a shot, but if you are comfortable with audacity (free opensource sound editor) try the instructions on this forum for reducing ogg file size:

Ok, So the aries file was actually only 0.14 seconds long while the glass break was 0.94. Quite a bit longer...
aries was about 5k (4982 bytes) so I did a few things to try to hit those targets for length and file size.
glass_break_compressed.ogg is your original file, same length, with more compression. That got it down to 10k
glass_break_trimmed.ogg I actually cut content out of the file to shorten it, but it was mostly dead space and I think it still reflects the original pretty well. that got it to 8k
glass_break_trimmed_compressed.ogg is the trimmed version with extra compression, I can't tell the difference between the two on my laptop speakers, that got it to 6k.
If you can get any of the the above versions to work I would try them in that order so you get the best quality. Granted none of them are equal to or smaller than the one you are replacing in size or length, but they are down to around .24 seconds so its close on length. I couldn't get it any shorter and still have it sound nearly identical to the original.
That said... If none of those work, then this one is a little more than just trimmed (lets say chopped lol), and it includes the extra compression. Its not quite as robust as the original sound or my trimmed versions, but I think it sounds pretty good even though I had to chop out some of the meat of the audio and I got the file size down to just below the aries version.
it is called:
glass_break_chopped_compressed_5k.ogg
Thats as far as I could go and still get something resembling breaking glass. I sure hope one of them works for you! Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

i think it has sumthin to do with bitrate & i kno there cant be any compression. it might hafta be either mono or stereo. i kno its super specific, i got a few sound files that are downloadable on this post
Old rumor was that the file sizes had to match exactly to the kb. I don't know where I saw it and it was hard to do without getting sloppy.
Were you ever able to put the stock file back in and get it to work? I think that unless that works we won't be able to get any custom sounds in there.

[Q] Help with bootanimation

I am failing at making a bootanimation.zip and I am not sure why. Anyone experienced want to take a look at my file and give me a hint as to why this doesn't work? It gets rid of the default Android, but just displays a black screen until the homescreen shows up.
Did I stump everybody? I figured I was just missing something silly like the picture files need to be in 7.5 bit format or something.

You must save the zip as an uncompressed zip file. Compression level should be set to storage mode.

That I am doing. Though I have noticed that sometimes "store" in WinRar compresses by just a few bytes. I made one that was completely not compressed (byte match for stored size versus on drive size). Still not working, so I've ruled that out as being the issue.
I'm attaching a version created by the tool in the link above. It still doesn't work. I have no clue why... still looking for hints.

That looks like it'd be a cool animation. I'll mess with it later when I get home. But at first glance comparing it to other animations I have that work, they are either greyscale or RGB jpgs @ 72dpi. Yours are indexed pngs @ 300dpi. That link says png should be ok, but it says to use RGB. Maybe you could try that next.
Here you go. I converted the images to 72dpi RGB jpgs. I'll still probably try again leaving them as 72dpi RGB pngs, but these animations work now.
I included your original 30fps version, but also slowed it down a bit. I think the 12fps looks good, but unless you have just wiped your dalvik cache, you might not have enough time to see very many blinks. The 21fps version isn't bad, but I think it's still a bit too fast. Tweak the speed to your preference.
These are not flashable, btw, so just copy over with root explorer or whatever.
Has to be renamed sanim.zip to work in GB.

Updated 4-3 Enhanced ICS Camera 1.3.1 (FC24) + How-To

4-3 v1.3.1 for FC24 is out!! Nothing has changed from 1.2.8. I just incorporated the fix for the low battery issue Calkulin added. Again, watch those file sizes - they get big very quickly.
I've been working on this for a while. Just a little rundown this is the camera from Calkulin's ICS rom so anything he's added to it is still there. I've tested it myself and it works - just make sure to read everything and install it correctly.
*There's an audio/video sync issue, this is across all roms and multiple phones that have this mod. So far there is no fix but it's being looked in to. Until then thanks to rafalense there is a solution to re-sync everthing after you record it.
Use Avidemux (Windows/Linux/BSD/Mac)
Follow rafalense post on using it. HERE
What I've changed:
1080p new(stock)
Superfine: 24Mbit (17)
Fine: 18Mbit (15)
Normal: 14Mbit (13)
720p
Superfine: 18Mbit (12)
Fine: 14Mbit (10)
Normal: 10Mbit (8)
640x480 - because it's used for the front facing camera also
Superfine: 3.159Mbit (3.078) Will implement in next version.
Audio bitrates for these is 128kbps (64 stock)
Sampling rate 48kHz (unchanged from Calkulin's, stock is 16kHz)
While I did put in the time doing the conversions, decompiling, and other stuff - I did not make it silent and a few other things. Credits for that goes to:
Calkulin - ICS goodness, making it silent, other mods I didn't do to this apk.
Agat63 - For helping me out and supporting me on this. Also for including this mod in his rom.
rafalense - For his post on editing the arrays.
To install just use Root Explorer. Any others using adb or terminal - I assume you know what you're doing already there with cp, chmod, and chown commands. Just in case though I put them up in the second post
Just a note: It may close on you a few times - this is normal from what I can tell. After a few tries and a minute or so it will work flawlessly. Also, feel free to bake this into your roms or whatever you desire. Just make sure to give me and others credit if you do.
U haz the bugz? Post them. I'm still new to this but I'll do my best to get them resolved. Have a solution? Post it. Don't leave others hanging.
Terminal code and future plans
Flashable zip located in first post. If you like to do it the 'hard' way, want to learn, or you're just old school like that the permissions for both are rw,r,r change owner/group to root also.
In terminal:
Code:
$su
#mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 /system
#cp /mnt/sdcard/file/location /system/etc
or
#cp /mnt/sdcard/file/location /system/app
#chmod 644 /path/to/file
Then to change owner/group:
#cmown root:root /path/to/file
#reboot
That should get you taken care of
Future plans
More audio adjustments (hopefully 192 without it cutting out)
Increase front cameras 640x480 bitrate
Try to get the time between each picture down.
Raise the FPS above 30 (might be hardware limited)
Currently checking with the OP of THIS thread. Hopefully we can get some of these mods included also. < I got the ok from the dev so I'll be decompiling over the next few days and looking through it to see how/if any of it can be added to this one.
If you can help with any of these (or more) please jump in. I'd especially like some help from anyone knowledgeable in audio/video or photography to help on numbers for quality tweaks. some questions I have are:
Since we only have one mic does setting audio recording to 2 channel really matter or is it better to set it to 1 and let the playback equipment (home theater or VLC for example) decode it to stereo?
How high should the bitrates (video) go before it becomes unnoticeable in terms of quality?
I've heard the stock audio gain is too high - if I can adjust it, how much should I drop it?
If you'd like to see how this is done and try it yourself I have a how-to on page 8, post 75. LINK There's also a 'cheat sheet' attached to the post.
Keep it up. My E4GT being the only video camera I have any improvements to bitrate and other options are good news.
So if we are currently on Calkulin's E4GT 2 v1.1 is this any different from the camera on there?
I'm doing what I can. It's my only one also not to mention I can take it into concerts that won't allow video cameras.
I'm working on the fps setting. I've read that Sammy didn't give us much to play with in that area but hopefully I can get it above 30fps. The bitrates for video can go higher but Potatoman over on the i9100 forum says it doesn't make a difference past 24 or so. It just makes a huge file.

Not in looks, just in performance. The bitrates for audio and video are higher which leads to better quality (to a degree). What we got stock just wasn't a good as it should be.

As long as you have a unicorn in your driveway pooping Skittles. Seriously though (you know it will be asked) this doesn't not in any way work on Gingerbread. I actually made one for GB, jst search around in the General section for the E4GT.

As long as you have a unicorn in your driveway pooping Skittles. Seriously though (you know it will be asked) this doesn't not in any way work on Gingerbread. I actually made one for GB, jst search around in the General section for the E4GT.

10-4 buddy and what you say if I did have a unicorn pooping skittles but in my garage?..... and will try this soon thanks
OP,
Sorry to drop into your thread like this but in OP you promised a flashable zip file and I thought I'll do it.
For those of you who don't wanna deal with adb, rootexplorer, renaming etc. here is the link:
http://jumbofiles.com/l281z31g34oi
This zip will flash new enhanced and silenced camera and at the same time will turn off camera system sounds like shutter, video on and of etc.
OP if it's OK with you just place the link in first post so users don't have to look for it.
If you think I'm outa line here just delete this post and keep link in first post if you want.

Agat63 thanks for the save on that zip. Been busy here at work today. I'll put up the link right now.
Works like a charm, thanks to both of you!

Glad you like it.
BTW to best of my knowledge silent cameras are illegal in some of the states.
You guys better check it out.
If any problems just use rootexplorer and rename:
/system/media/audio/ui/Shutter_01.mp3 to Shutter_01.ogg.
It will turn on camera shutter sound.
Yeah, it's frowned upon lol
Good call. I'm hoping most people know that by now. Just don't do anything idiotic with it (you know what I mean...)
Anyway, uploaded another file and instructions for using terminal to install all of this. Almost forgot to include it. The camera doesn't work to it's full potential without it. Agat63, I'm working late - could you include it in the zip and I'll update the link in the OP in a bit. I posted where it needs to go inside the rom.

Camera file type change?

Anyway to change the default file type of the camera to JPEG instead of PNG?

Not on the stock camera. Maybe one from the market. I'm also sure theres some converter apps out there.

Thanks.

I'm confused here. Are we talking about the stock camera app? It's default IS jpeg, not png. Of course that is the extension - not the file type. You can manually change the .jpeg to .png or whatever. In most cases it will open just the same.
Since the question was posed in general (changing saved file type), yes there is a way to change the extension and the file type (the manner in which the data is written and compressed). Of course you need a working knowledge of .smali files, .jar files, and a few other things. There seems to not be much of a point to changing it however, so I and others that have messed with the camera app have just left it alone.

With that, now I'm confused. I don't run a camera app (other than stock).
I'm currently running dazednconfused Fe22 wicked and it, for me, is defaulted to png. I've tried almost all the stock ICS leaks from sf, and again, everytime I've used the camera and wanted to save to my laptop, it was always png. (Probably have 300+ pics)
I first noticed it when i was running The Goodness.
Why I brought the issue up in the first place - I was trying to send a screen cap to the forum on a small odd issue and the XDA mobile ap refused because of the file type.
So that leaves me with one question, why then, am I seeing the pics defaulted to png while running stock camera?
:edit: It may have read that I went back to all the previous ICS leaks and tried confirming - no, I was just saying that over the past few months, I've tried all the one clickers.. just clarifying. ( I have found that I don't put all my thoughts in text.. too much soda)

The screen shots are png's by default. You need a third party screen capture app. I know screenshot ux allows you to choose between jpg and png. It also allows editing of screenshot before saving. Every ROM I've used lately has had png's as screen captures, but camera has always been jpg format.

You can change the save format in smali. decompile the camera apk and search the smali files for PNG and change them to JPG. recomiple and your done.

And it's a good thing I've been checking out the compiling tools! Thanks for the info! I'll play with that tonight.

[MOD] Disable low battery, battery temperature pop-ups and full battery notification

The reason for this little hack is the fact those 2 pop-ups can become an extreme double-annoyance while driving in hot weather. Imagine, your battery is below 15%, yet scorching hot, beyond the charging cut-off threshold. Connect a charger and you get bombarded with the "charging paused, battery temperature too high" pop-ups. Disconnect it and you get a low battery ones. This little patch deals with the issue by simply disabling the annoying pop-ups. It also disables the annoying battery full notification.
Please note, this doesn't modify any functionality, it just disables the pop-ups. The battery will not and should not charge when overheated.
Instructions:
Download and unpack "BatteryPatch.zip", you should now have "Patch.js" jscript along with the "utils" directory.
Fetch your "/system/app/SystemUI.apk" from the device, place it in the same directory, along with the "Patch.js".
Apply the patch by launching "Patch.js" and push the patched SystemUI.apk back to the device.
Updates:
Not every ROM seems to have the battery full notification and/or battery overheating popup. Patching those is now optional, the script will show a warning in case it fails to patch those instead of erroring out completely.
There are some ROMs out there with showLowBatteryWarning method looking somewhat different from what i've seen on my S3. In order to try & let the patch work on more ROMs, the showLowBatteryWarning method is now being bypassed entirely. Hopefully, no ROM does anything important inside that method, besides showing the annoying low battery popups. In any case, as usual, you use the patch - you take the risk.
PS: For those willing and able to apply the patch manually, download the second zip and do a 3 way merge.

Nice mod...just added it to my rom.. purposely drained the battery...no notification pop up (hopefully won't get the temp warning anyway)
Lovely work
Already given 8 thanks today...I will come back!

Thanks. Temp warning should not be there any longer, too. But the rest of them (bad charger, overcurrent, stuff like that) are still there, i don't think killing those is a good idea.
The reason i did this was primarily the temperature warning. I've been looking all over the forum on how to disable it, but couldn't find any info, so i though, "what the hell, i can find it myself, it's not such a big deal"... during the search i've noticed the low bat one, too, and though "hmm, i hate that one too, lets kill it as well".
Thats about it.
Just patched and tested the full battery notification as well, first post updated.
Lovely, gonna test this when I get home
Thanks for the update
sorry to sound like a total noob, but im completely new to apktool. was reading up on it and trying it, but im slightly confused. what options do you chose exactly when decompiling? i couldnt find the power smali file after decompiling
There are plenty of explanations/tutorials on this around the forum. About not having the smali after decompiling... any chance your rom is odexed? In this case you wont be getting any smali files, cause all the code is in the odex file, not the apk. You will have to deodex it in this case and, possibly, reodex it before placing it back on the device (not sure about it, specifically i am unsure how the odex dependecies work).
Sadly, i cannot provide a ready to use apk, there are too many versions being in use, especially considering the 15 toggles mod, the battery icon mod as well as many other visual mods also patch stuff inside this apk, increasing the number of variations even further. So, sorry, no ready to use apk.
Is there a flashable file?

Nope, and it is extremely hard to make. In fact, impossible, with the currently available CWM tools, as far as i know. It would be "for ROM version <insert_version_here> with 15 toggles and circle battery", "for ROM version <insert_version_here> without 15 toggles and green battery" etc etc etc kind of variations, and as i already mentioned, i doubt this is a viable option.
Anyone can prove me wrong and provide a way of writing a CWM script that would decompile (deodex if needed) an existing apk, apply a patch, recompile it and than replace it ? Out of all the things needed, i only know how to do the "replacing" part
Can i ask a massive favour?
im now havin problems with my systemui in regards to it recording the changes (decompiling & recompiling - i think i have an issue with my pc but i cant figure it out)
Could you apply the changes to the attached file for me?

Well, if you know of someone that could have possibly coded an infrastructure for doing this kind of patches onboard, automatically, i would be glad to get pointed to the right direction, and will integrate it there. Currently, i don't know of any.
Seriously, though... is it possible to baksmali in recovery mode somehow ? Can one run patch, sed and similar utilities there ? If yes, can i see an example ? Cause if that's possible, it can make a "flashable zip" for stuff like that possible.
hmm, so if i have these files in my app folder:
systemui.apk
systemui.odex
I cannot just add/replace the code as described?

You can deodex, patch the smali while having it handy during deodexing, and, possibly, reodex it back into an odex file and replace just the odex. Never did it myself, though. I find odexed roms to be too much of a hassle while modding stuff to use those.
Is it ok if i ask help too?

GalaxyS3man, your apk is NOT odexed. Took me barely 2 minutes to apply the patch. Here we go...
PS: TBH, i've been under impression people on XDA are perfectly familiar applying and/or finding out this kind of stuff, really
