[Q] who wants to help me change swype keypress sounds??? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i hope someone will...
im using a glass crack keypress image for my themed swype & i have a glass crack .ogg sound file i want to use but it wont work
what i changed was the KeyPressAries.ogg found in swype.apk under assets, i found the sound file i wanted to use & changed it to .ogg renamed it to KeyPressAries, & replaced it using 7zip & all it did was lose the keypress sound...

I don't really know anything about anything lol but I have heard of things like this being sensetive to the size of the file especially something like the keyboard which may remain loaded and need to be cached. Try to get the size of the new file the same or smaller than the one you are replacing.
Again this is random speculation but it makes sense to me...

Yeah, I did a little googling for you. Try convert to mono if its not already. Beyond that I use audacity to do audio editing. I work on IVR systems and sometimes they are sensetive to bit rates and such so if you want to send me the file I can give it a shot, but if you are comfortable with audacity (free opensource sound editor) try the instructions on this forum for reducing ogg file size:

Ok, So the aries file was actually only 0.14 seconds long while the glass break was 0.94. Quite a bit longer...
aries was about 5k (4982 bytes) so I did a few things to try to hit those targets for length and file size.
glass_break_compressed.ogg is your original file, same length, with more compression. That got it down to 10k
glass_break_trimmed.ogg I actually cut content out of the file to shorten it, but it was mostly dead space and I think it still reflects the original pretty well. that got it to 8k
glass_break_trimmed_compressed.ogg is the trimmed version with extra compression, I can't tell the difference between the two on my laptop speakers, that got it to 6k.
If you can get any of the the above versions to work I would try them in that order so you get the best quality. Granted none of them are equal to or smaller than the one you are replacing in size or length, but they are down to around .24 seconds so its close on length. I couldn't get it any shorter and still have it sound nearly identical to the original.
That said... If none of those work, then this one is a little more than just trimmed (lets say chopped lol), and it includes the extra compression. Its not quite as robust as the original sound or my trimmed versions, but I think it sounds pretty good even though I had to chop out some of the meat of the audio and I got the file size down to just below the aries version.
it is called:
glass_break_chopped_compressed_5k.ogg
Thats as far as I could go and still get something resembling breaking glass. I sure hope one of them works for you! Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Nothing worked... oh well i thought it was a good idea...
Edit: i think theres something else were not doing right i noticed that in 7zip the files compressed size is the same as the file size maby no compression would work but idk how to achieve that & still keep the sound the way its made to be
& also i figured out that even if i put the stock file back in i still get no buttonpress sounds......

i think it has sumthin to do with bitrate & i kno there cant be any compression. it might hafta be either mono or stereo. i kno its super specific, i got a few sound files that are downloadable on this post

Old rumor was that the file sizes had to match exactly to the kb. I don't know where I saw it and it was hard to do without getting sloppy.

Were you ever able to put the stock file back in and get it to work? I think that unless that works we won't be able to get any custom sounds in there.

Rockbox VGA (Updated to stable 3.7 release)

As an avid Rockbox user, I was excited when I discovered this page with precompiled apk's for us. Link I then sadly found out there was no VGA version, only QVGA, HVGA, and WVGA. So I decided to compile it for our beloved VGA RAPH devices. I attached the .apk. Download and install rockboxfixed.apk, download this and extract the "fonts" folder (Inside the zip it is /rockbox-fonts/.rockbox/fonts) to the "rockbox" folder on your sdcard then it should look like the second image and should be more usable. It appears, however, if you extract it to the sdcard you have to manually use the rockbox filebrowser or the theme settings to set it to your selected font. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Outdated: Haven't really gotten to test it so I expect I made an error somewhere, possible in signing the app or whatnot. I'll fix it tomorrow.
P.S. For anyone who doesn't know what Rockbox is: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/WhyRockbox
Edit: Noticed some issues then realized I compiled it for 640 x 480 landscape not 480 x 640 portrait like it should be. Uploaded a new version. *Crosses fingers*
Edit 2: To fix the tiny font follow these steps:
1. Download and extract this and extract it to your sdcard so you have a folder called "fonts" at the root of your sdcard.
2. Open terminal emulator and type: su
3. Type cd sdcard
4. Type cp -af fonts /data/data/org.rockbox/app_rockbox/rockbox
That should do it. It should now look like the second screenshot when you open rockbox. I'll see if I can incorporate the fonts into the apk but not sure how to do that right now.
Edit 3: Wow, just discovered something. You can just copy the fonts folder the the "rockbox" folder at the root of your sdcard. Makes it significantly easier.
Thanks for doing that. Man, i used to have an iRiver, and used and grabbed daily builds for that thing. For other's, it's a really awesome mediaplayer. Well, more then that. I was playing arcade games and doom and such thanks to Rockbox really. This was amazing for an MP3 player that is.

Ok, tried it last night, and not usable. Something about the screen size might be wrong, as the screen fill's up the top left corner (about 1/16 of the screen), and the menu is so small you literally have to squint to read the text, instead of it filling the whole screen. I don't have a picture, but honestly, if you think about an icon size in "Sense", the whole screen menu is honestly MUCH smaller in size in whole then 1 Sense icon.

Since guessing u use or at least test it, wanted to get some feedback from ya.

No, it's a music player first and foremost. The only video format it supports is mpeg2 and I'm not even sure if video is supported in the Android version.
Hi there,

Wanted to let you know that the fonts fix doesn't work on HTC Desire w/ Froyo. Sort of did everything as described but nothing.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

That's a native Android device... Not sure why you're posting in the Fuze section. Do they have the same resolution, and there is no RockBox app that is for the Desire...? I'd be surprised.

First off, you should download the WVGA version from here not the one I posted. Second, did you try copying the fonts folder to both locations, within the data folder and the sdcard? Just curious if one might work and not the other. I also changed the first post to be a little more clear. Actually I'm having a little trouble with getting it to recognize the fonts on the sdcard too. I just took the rockbox people's word for it. One way to fix it is to use the rockbox filebrowser and just select the font you want. That should do it.
P.S. I'm no dev either, I just know how to use a Linux command line somewhat.

You're very welcome. Timestretch has nothing to do with me, as I'm sure you already know. That's up to the real rockbox devs to incorporate. Just out of curiosity, what do you use timestretch for? I use it for learning guitar licks in songs.

That's sounds like there was a stable Rockbox build for Android which totally isn't true. It's *unstable* and largely unusable. 3.7 is stable for a lot of other devices, but not even a single android phone.

(THINK TANK) (SOLVED!) Changing lock/unlock sounds in froyo

Anyone attempted to do it? There's no option to alter them in settings so I found where they are they are located in system/media/ui I tried deleting it through astro but I didn't have sufficient permissions -_- any suggestions? Id love to have my own little lock sound instead of that barely heard sound. And yes I got the idea from the ipod touch ability to do that when its jailbroken. If its possible on that I know it is on android

Yes, that option should be possible on a rooted device. I think once your rooted (which you are) that you find the file that contains the sounds and simply add your sound to the list. I think the only way to do so might be through usb. Plug in the phone via usb and drag the sound file onto your phone and it should work. I've never done this before, but I've read about it with past Android devices. Hopefully it will work for you. If it does or does not work please be kind to let me and others know.

I haven't seen any way where you can choose, but the unlock sound is found in /system/media/audio/ui/
idk if mp3's work, but I'm assuming replacing the Lock/Unlock ogg's with another one of the same name would work. It's easy to convert to ogg anyway.
I've always wanted to do this with some old school 8 bit sounds or even metal gear codecs but never got around the time to trying.

An easy way is using a website like media.io
As far as I know, no root explorer apps work on our phone. I could be wrong.
Easiest way is going to clockwork recovery, mounting system and pushing.
I can confirm it works. I just have to lower the volume of my files because they're WAY too loud lol.

Adb pushed the lock sounds to the directory? Or pulled them first then pushed them?

I just pushed, it overwrote the original. Don't need to backup if you still have the zip for the rom.
Just make sure when you're in clockwork recovery System is mounted so you can get in there through adb.

Here's a vid to see it in action. Sound is still a bit too loud for me, going to edit the volume again to lower it. I want to sound cool but not obnoxious lol.
EDIT: Keep in mind your Unlock sound flickers on/off when you lock your screen with the desktop clock on.

Couldn't hurt to ask Cyan. But if he's busy working on CM6 I don't wanna bother lol.
I put the highest bitrate on the converter website. Shouldn't matter anyway, the file is still going to be like 20 kbs unless you use a long ass sound. (Which I don't recommend lol)
Personally I use Acoustica MP3 audio mixer to edit my ringtones. I lowered the volume in there, then converted on the website.
As for where I get my sounds, I google lol. "Videogame title here" + sound effects or sounds.

Hey I wonder if it would be possible to have an animated lock screen of say, lifestream moving around?
Being that the limit breaks were never that long, I'd say the full animation from the game would be perfect.
And this is for Samsung Epic. Not CM7 (saw your signature, just making sure you're aware )

I'll see what I can do! Going to sleep will get back with you tomorrow evening
Omnislash Bootanimation FF7 (game)
Ok, so it's not quite evening yet but I managed to get one out... Because the videos in the game are usually displayed in wide screen format, it will be a little smaller than you might like in order to portray it in portrait mode (phone straight up and down). I've set the default frames per second to 30 but you can change that if you like. I'm not sure how long your boot animation lasts as there are countless variables that decide that. currently, at 30 fps, it should be about 40 seconds. I trimmed this up to get it that small and can trim it more if needed.
In the other file I'm including the sound file that syncs with the animation. It is in mp3 format and could possibly be off sync with your rom and/or settings due to either a slower or faster boot up. Thus, you may need to play with the fps to get it just right. Don't forget that THIS file needs to be extracted.
Now, as far as the animation is concerned, you will need to rename the zip file to whatever your current boot animation file is named. It varies from rom to rom, but it could be botanimation.Zip or vzw_bootanimation.zip, etc. It's going to either be located in the system/media folder, or system/customize/resource.
If you want the audio to work (and this is usually a shot in the dark getting it right) place the extracted mp3 file in the same folder you're dropping the bootanimation file in. You may need to rename it to like, android_audio or something. If most of your system's sound files are not in mp3 format, you may have to convert it to whatever audio format they are in using some sort of sound editor (good luck with that).
Let me know if you have any requests to change this animation and let me know how it works for you!
Oh one more thing.. If you don't want to lose your current botanimation forever, simply rename it to some thing else so my file won't over write it.. Don't forget to change permissions and ownership on the files after you drop them in the folder.

Don't forget to change permissions and ownership on the files after you drop them in the folder.

cant convert the .mp3 into .wav
I will do it for you tomorrow or you can do it by using the free computer program I use: Wavepad sound editor. Once installed, you can right click the mp3, click edit, and once the app opens, "save as" and you can select wav. I will upload it tomorrow if you haven't already done it. How is the bootanimation? I had to up my frames to 80 since my phone boots too fast

I edited my upload post (#10) and added the sound file in WAV format per your request . If the file is too large, I can try making it smaller but it may degrade the quality.
Bump...please someone try to theme this.

Trying to learn how to create themes. Taking me a while but when I do, this will be my first project. Also, I'll incorporate a few of the ideas I've read in your thread.

[Q] Help with bootanimation

I am failing at making a bootanimation.zip and I am not sure why. Anyone experienced want to take a look at my file and give me a hint as to why this doesn't work? It gets rid of the default Android, but just displays a black screen until the homescreen shows up.
Did I stump everybody? I figured I was just missing something silly like the picture files need to be in 7.5 bit format or something.

I haven't a clue...I'm just here to help that uncomfortably alone feeling. :-( good luck
Id like to know/learn how to make a bootanimation is there a section/tutorial on this somewhere??
I see there's a section on theme-ing. Am i mising something?
Sorry not trying to thread jack, just thought the OP can shed some light.
Good luck on your question!
Haven't tried it yet myself, but I've noticed these tutorial threads in the past:

You must save the zip as an uncompressed zip file. Compression level should be set to storage mode.

I hadn't seen that first thread (or the tool in it). Neat. Thank you. Wish I had seen that before I started.
It still didn't work, but at least that lets me know that it really is an odd problem.

That I am doing. Though I have noticed that sometimes "store" in WinRar compresses by just a few bytes. I made one that was completely not compressed (byte match for stored size versus on drive size). Still not working, so I've ruled that out as being the issue.
I'm attaching a version created by the tool in the link above. It still doesn't work. I have no clue why... still looking for hints.

That looks like it'd be a cool animation. I'll mess with it later when I get home. But at first glance comparing it to other animations I have that work, they are either greyscale or RGB jpgs @ 72dpi. Yours are indexed pngs @ 300dpi. That link says png should be ok, but it says to use RGB. Maybe you could try that next.
Here you go. I converted the images to 72dpi RGB jpgs. I'll still probably try again leaving them as 72dpi RGB pngs, but these animations work now.
I included your original 30fps version, but also slowed it down a bit. I think the 12fps looks good, but unless you have just wiped your dalvik cache, you might not have enough time to see very many blinks. The 21fps version isn't bad, but I think it's still a bit too fast. Tweak the speed to your preference.
These are not flashable, btw, so just copy over with root explorer or whatever.
Has to be renamed sanim.zip to work in GB.

True, I guess I assumed he was using a kernel with the symlink to bootanimation.zip since his phone was actually trying to use the original file. Thanks for the reminder to anyone else trying to get this to work.

I've tried this myself many times to no evail. I get boot animations from a rom that i like and try to put the boot ani in a diff rom and it never works. i'm never able to get the files into the other zip. I can't wait till i figure out how to completely customize roms to exactly what i want! i'm learning a little more day by day. this thread has helped me a little and will now be my reference if i run into this problem once i finally make my own boot ani. Thanks guys!

I am thinking the editor I was using for the images was doing something funky. Anyway, much appreciated, the 21 fps one works beautifully.

Help editing APK

Hello all,
So I have really enjoyed this game GlTron ,but want to change the music of the game. I am rooted so I used ES File Explorer to get the APK off of the phone and onto my computer. I opened up the apk using 7zip and removed the .ogg song in the /res/raw folder. I then converted the song I have (Son of Flynn from the Tron movie) into an .ogg and renamed it to the same name of the song in the original apk. I dragged it from Windows Explorer into the /res/raw folder within 7zip and closed out. I put the apk on my phone and tried to install using ES File Explorer, but it failed. I then tried to install it by putting it in /system/apps and rebooting, it would install that way, but would force close right after I tried to start it.
Any ideas? If this is the wrong forum or not okay to do, please move/remove the thread. I figured the game is free and available under GPL it is okay to modify.
Thanks!
EDIT: This is where I came to my process of editing the apk

You might have to actually decompile to do this.

yes I did, it is just one file.
If it is allowed I can upload the two .apks so anyone can look
Yes please upload.

Alright here are the two apks, the modded one has the new song in it.
thank you everyone
Have you tried re-signing it? I think apps in /data/app need to be signed. By changing the music, you probably made the original signature invalid. There are many tools to sign apk's, but this one is easy to use.
if everything else with the procedure is ok(mainly with the signing), try to reduce the bitrate of the song cause the default is 80kbps and the modded is 256kbps
maybe it crashes for that.
I tried the resigner and the app would install, but would not launch, force closed again upon starting. I lowered the bitrate to 96kb/s and got the same thing...ideas?
EDIT: Took it down to 64 kb/s and got the same thing.
I would be happy to send a small paypal donation someones way if they could make this work
If I get some time later, I'll try to decompile, add your music ,and recompile.

Oh wow that would be amazing and most appreciated, if you have a donation link I would be more than happy to send some money your way
Thanks. All my donations go toward my 2 day old son's toy fund. I changed your sounds no problem, but the originals and the modded were all the exact same size, which leads me to believe that somewhere, the sounds you wanted got lost. I'll upload it, and if it's still wrong music, just attach the individual .ogg files and i'll compile it again.

My bad, is it easy/possible to boost the audio from the song? Sending a few bucks your way now !
EDIT: added .ogg file for another member who PM-ed me.

It's extremely easy. All professional audio editors have .ogg support, so it edits just like an mp3. Give me a few minutes. And thanks for the donation-deeply appreciated.
edit:here ya go- I bumped the overall volume of each by 50%, bumped the bitrate up to 320k and added some bass rumble to the explosion file. Be sure to uninstall my old modded version first to avoid parsing errors.

Oh wow thank you so much. I meant for the song to be louder than the sound of the light cycle movement, but I am not going to ask you to do any more work. You have already done so much and I cannot be this picky with something. Just having the song is enough
No worries- I'm sitting in a hospital waiting room, and not getting any sleep with a 2 day old, so tinkering with a computer is no big deal. I put the original engine sound back in, so it should be lower than the music.
