Huge Problem...
I just bought 2 brand new S3's from sprint (me and my GF). After several attempts at rooting I finally got it on both phones. However, after flashing CWM and/or TWRP (tried both newest versions), Neither phone will mount anything in either recovery...I mean anything. Odin for a short while was my only option at flashing anything. But seeing how I can't write my own .tar balls all I can flash are recoveries & boot-loaders, no custom roms.
And here is the real kicker...
My phone (of course), will not mount MTP on any computer. What preceded this was upgrading CWM through the Clockwork Mod.apk, after the upgrade I was stuck in an eternal recovery boot-loop (where nothing mounts, so it's useless), even pulling the battery and waiting had no effect. I accidentally discovered that if I boot into Download Mode and hit "Vol. Down" to cancel my s3 would revert back to normal booting procedures. But now no usb... ie no Odin... no odin no recovery...no more options. Does any one have any suggestions??
Note: Both Phones are running 4.1.2 with the MD4 baseband, same kernels, same build, same hardware. Tried accessing USB on 3 different laptops, each with fresh Odin installs and fresh Samsung USB driver installs.
Boot the phone up plug it into the computer when you get the usb icon on the notification bar pull it down click on it then set to MTP and voila your done. By default the new roms make te phone default to camera not MTP.

Cant do that..
If there was a USB icon or any sort of notification other than the chime signifying a charge, I most certainly would... Neither the phone nor computer(s) recognize any sort of USB Data connection at any point. Not In Download mode and most certainly not when the OS is running normally.
That's weird it should while the phone is running. By any chance do you have kies installed if you do make sure it's removed from both phone and computer.

I do not believe I have kies installed. Its not in my phone apps and I never installed it on the 3 different laptops.

I now Have USB access. I did nothing more than try again the following day. No new software installed, no new apps dopwnloaded, no computer reboots, no phone reboots.
Now the only problem is that I cant get either CWM nor TWRP to mount anything in recovery, be it internal memory or the external SD.
Update:
USB will not connect in download mode.
Odin, CWM and TWRP are still useless.

Try uninstalling the Samsung Drivers, then reinstall them without the phone plugged into the computer. After it's done plug in phone, after it finishes loading the drivers go to Development Options and click usb debugging. Let it load the drivers for that. After all is done, power down and boot into Download.
Worked for me, hope it works for you

This is just to get USB in Odin working, will not help with the mounting problems in recovery. That's definitely an issue with the new batch of SG3's being sent out.
Really hoping someone can figure it out.
i can confirm the not being able to mount storage in recovery with the new gs3 running 4.1.2 out of the box..i managed to get mine rooted but am unable to flash anything because of this issue..really sucks

as was pointed out rudely to me and others in another post. post the problems in the Forum for TWRP recovery, so hopefully the developers of it will be able to come up with a fix. the more who are reporting it will show it's a real problem but if the problems are spread all over different posts they won't see them.

Is it possible the internal storage of the newer phones is formatted to exFAT? Also, if you are using a 64GB sdcard, it would be formatted to exFAT by default. I don't think either TWRP or CWM will recognize exFAT.

Thanks already been done. Another person posted screen shots and I have sent an email through the Team Win site about it also.

as of 2.4 of TWRP
Support for exFAT formatted sdcards
v2.6 also states
Updated exFAT to latest commits

thats a good point however it wont mount my external storage either and i was using a 16gb card i had in a gs2 that i know was not exfat so i dont think thats the problem..unless the new phones are recognizing the storage in recovery as exfat for some reason..i did notice that the option to select the external was available so im assuming it knows that its there it just wont mount it and the internal storage is listed more than once and one of them reads sdcard0 ..im not sure whats going on but something was changed thats for sure
Sdcard0 is correct. That's where everything should be.

Yeah, I don't understand why it wont mount the sd card, or for that matter, the internal storage. I have been trying it on two different brand new S3's (sprint Variant) and still no go. I managed to reflash it to stock through odin. However the only way I can get the USB to work in Download/Odin mode is through ADB reboot-bootloader command. If I use the hard keys to force download mode the usb wont connect to odin. but for some reason if I use the adb command, it works fine.
Does anyone with more knowledge think that the qualcom secureboot has anything to do with it? I know there are ADB commands to unlock the secureboot, but I am hesitant to try it. I already softbricked my phone once, I prefer not to do it again.
Also... My phone is currently stock 4.1.2 - no root, does anyone know where I can get a .tar file for odin that contains 4.1.2 w/root? I continuously try getting it from http://rwilco12.com/downloads.php?d...H-L710)/Stock ROMs/JB/MD4/Full Restore/Rooted ,but the download keeps ending prematurely.
This is a disturbing development.
There are so many postings like this one, yet the S4 is rootable. I'm concerned about the Note 3 now though.

Did you try cf auto root?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963812
Shouldn't have any problems with this and beats having to download a giant tar file
i tried that cf autoroot..it ddnt work...my phone is rooted using a one click odin..everything works perfectly but its stock..just cant mount the storage to flash anything...i think im going to throw an empty sdcard in it and try to format it with the phone..if i can, then push a zip file for a boot animation to it and see if itll mount and see that zip..
UPDATE
Yes, I have tried rooting with cf and many numerous methods for the S3 sprint variant on 4.1.2, the only thing that worked was booting through adb using the adb reboot-bootloader command and then using rwilco12's rooted stock image. that is the only way I can root on the brand new s3's.
And as far as using a new sdcard for CWM or TWRP...whats the point? the problem is not that it wont mount just the sd card, the problem is that it wont mount anything, not even the internal phone memory.

Hey guys,
I tried flashing the ICS rom (cm-9-20120420-ODIN-galaxy2.tar.tar) yesterday, My Samsung Galazxy S2 is already rooted, but when the phone rebooted after flashing the custom rom, it reboots to a black screen with a blue light lit. i can boot into CMW recovery, but when i try to restore from the NAndroid, it gives the error E:Can't mount sdcard. when i try to mount the sdcard, it gives the same error. When i put the phone into download mode to use ODIN to reflash it, ODIN doesn't even recognize the phone. if itry to format the card through CMW, it gievs Error mounting sdcard.....skipping format....Done.. If i try mount USB storage, it gives E: unable to write to ums lunfile (no such file or...) How do i fix this, is it bricked? i never ran into this problem when i use to flash my EVO 4G, TP2, TP, or WM 6.5 Mogul.
Make sure you have the proper drivers installed on your computer and try a different cable. I think Odin is your only hope unless you try an external SD card.

try reformatting the card in a PC or different phone & see if it reads.. it could be a corrupt card, but if you can get to recovery it shouldn't be bricked

Once again. Your do not own a Galaxy S2, you own a Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch. Unless the page you downloaded the file from has Epic 4G Touch written all over it, it probably has NOTHING to do with your phone.
You will not find any CM9 build for our phone on Cyanogen Mod's website and you will never flash a rom, tar or anything that is marked for the i9100 or any other variant other than the SPH-D710 to your device.
The bootloader in the International tar you ODIN'd will not work with your phones USB. You will never ODIN anything again in this state. Get it jtag'd or replaced. You can sit here and fart around with it but you flashed software that was not compatible with the your hardware and most of it will no longer work until it has been replaced.

That is a garunteed brick. Just like the ICS leaks from samsung the bootloader borks the usb and storage can not be mounted.
It is NOT for your phone. Flashing roms from that section is just plain suicidal. Its like playing russian roulette with a full cylinder. The SPH-D710 is not an i9100. Lets say had it even come close to working you would have NO voice and No Data. The i9100 is a GSM phone, not CDMA and it does not use WiMax. The hardware in your phone is WAY different.

Please, please, please tell me you are not trying to do this through ROM Manager... That has bricked a ton of phones. Samsung and HTC are completely different ballgames. I have owned both, and Samsung is a LOT different than Samsung. Firstly, What rom are you trying to flash on her phone? So I can correctly give you some instruction.

Are you trying to use auto root package?
Sounds like you are because that's the only method where you need yo worry about it. For that all you need is USB debugging on and that's it. Auto root package should push it to the phone.
You need to be rooted too.
Please clarify what exactly you are running so I can suggest an easier and safe way do flash a new ROM.

Search for mobile Odin on xda.
Install it following the directions on that thread.
Get the el26 cwm .tar file.
Flash that file using kernel slot in mobile Odin.
As soon as you see the Samsung screen after flash.. hold down power and vol up until you see cwm.
Flash any ROM you want from there on.
Remember that ff18 is ICS while el26 is gb kernel so the phone will NOT boot. So make sure you have the ROM on sdcard before following the above steps so you can flash the ROM right after flashing the recovery. El26 stock cwm by chris41g is the safest recovery.

Additionally, there are kernels for ICS that have a custom recovery that can be flashed through mobile Odin. You just have to find them first. However, the GB recoveries are the most stable (other than Odin).

Hello all, My name is Zach. I've been around XDA for a while, but haven't really posted anything, I thanked devs for work and have been flashing my phone for a while now. Well, last night, I was exhausted, and shouldn't have done what I did. I flashed the full "CODE_SPH-D710.GA10_818252_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5" to my phone via mobile odin from an ics rom (Phantoms ff18 I believe). Everything was going fine until the phone just shut off, and it booted straight into recovery mode.
Well now my phone will not boot, and I have no access to my external memory card via CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.3 that was installed from the tar. All of my roms are on my external.
Every time I plug it into the computer I get "USB device is not recognized" and it installs an "Unknown Device" driver from windows. So I can not mount it in CWM to send the files to internal.
I have tried removing all drivers and kies, restarting, reinstalling, then plugging my phone back in about 1000 times now.
Now some good news, I can get into Odin mode, but odin does not recognize it due to the problem above^
My question is, is there still hope? and can anyone help me?
I would try redownloading drivers on a diffrent computer if possible and make sure you have original cord. You can also try to wipe data via stock recovery and try to boot again just some quick thoughts also could try to find one of the one clicks and pull cord out and put back in once you open the one click (not during the one click) and see if it will show then start the one click also make sure you have the correct drivers install if you go to sextapes site they have everything you need. Hope it turns out ok:beer:

Get a Micro SD USB adapter. You can transfer the files with that.
Well. If your phone still turns on there's hope. After you plug it into your computer and it installs that unknown device or whatever go to control panel -> system -> device manager.
Right click on the unknown device, update driver, browse my computer for drivers, let me pick from list of drivers, then forcefully install the samsung driver through there and then try to odin a stock ICS tar http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com/LeakSite/?dir=Leaks/Samsung Epic 4G Touch/FI27/Original TAR/.
After the you install the tar I would boot into recovery and wipe data and cache then reboot to make sure it's clean. Then after you're back to stock then you can root recovery whatever and try flashing JB again. I suggest using CWM and a zip file this time around though. Good luck.

Is it possible to boot an android OS from my external memory card? I know you could do it on the NOOK Color
Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.

So, to recap:
You were on FF18 with custom recovery, went to flash the GA10 tar via MO, phone died during process, isn't recognized when phone is in Odin mode and connected to a pc, you can still get to recovery and download mode on the phone but can't flash because it's not recognized, removed/re installed
Correct?
Have you tried another pc? Have you tried another cable? Have you pulled the sd card out and tried reading that on a pc?
There is some sort of lesson to be learned here. :sly:

Id didn't die, it just turned off, and restarted straight into the recovery. I have tried 3, and 4 different cables, the SD cards reads in the computer but isn't showing up in the recovery, I get "No files found" and since I cant boot, I cant change the directory for the SD card.

Yes, But hopefully my phone is revivable!
Have you tried another pc?
And was it a full flash? You saw pass and it restarted?
:edit: Just saw your post about using both laptops.
What gets me, the flashing process and a restart and still you're left with the custom recovery. I'm interested in where the flash got to.. since the tar doesn't flash a custom recovery..
One thing to try - Put the phone in Odin mode, have it plugged into the laptop, then start odin. Try it backwards..
Which version of Odin are you using?

Hey guys,
I am a total n00b with android. I just got a Sprint Galaxy S3 the other day. I was messing around with different roms. I currently have cyanogenmod 10.1 stable. From within ClockworkMod Recovery, I wiped the data/factory reset, wiped the cache partition, formated /system, formated /data, formated /cache, and formated /sdcard. Now, the phone just sits at the cyanogenmod boot image. I cannot view the sd card storage on my windows 7 computer. The phone will still go into download mode, and recovery mode. What do I do? Please help.
Thanks in advance,
fjawor
Look up how to adb sideload a rom.
This isn't a brick, by the way. A brick would mean that your phone has the level of usefulness of a brick.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. Thanks for the vocab correction... oops... Anyhow, the adb sideload seems to work, but my computer will not recognize my device at all. I am using windows 7. I have reinstalled the samsung drivers several times now. What do I do?
Try different usb ports and cords. You might even have to try a different pc. When I rooted my phone my laptop wouldn't work even tho it reconized the phone. You can even try odin to flash a stock rooted rom

I thought you couldn't flash ROMs with odin, only custom recoveries.
thanks anyway
If its a tar file you can flash in odin. And they have stock rooted tar files here on xda.
You can check out www.rwilco12.com he has a tar file not sure if its rooted tho.

This is still considered a type of bricking...the difference between the two is what matters.
Softbricks can be fixed kind of easily where as hardbricks are another beast in themselves

No, bricked means you no longer have a phone; you have a brick instead.
There's only 1 type of brick: the kind that doesn't do anything.

Ok from what I understand in my readings is that a softbrick is when you cannot load your Rom but can access download mode still and a hardbrick is when your phone will not enter download mode anymore without jtaging involved

Yeah but when you say brick it's taken to mean that your phone is just that; a brick
I agree but some users do not understand the difference

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2x GT-S7560M with CWM 5.0.0.4 (I believe) installed on it. My phone was crammed with apps and some system applications weren't working (messaging and dialer to be exact), probably because I removed some system apps without referring to the list of safe apps to remove.
I decided it would be best to just start over. I formatted the phone through cwm and tried to flash the original stock rom.
It displayed error in /sdcard/"name of rom".zip (status 0). Installation aborted.
Some extra information about the problem:
- It can't mount /emmc (I don't know what that is)
- It seems to be unable to mount the internal sd card because I tried flashing a zip from there, but it showed some sort of error.
I forgot to mention that I also checked for bad downloads, and have already tried formatting the sd card itself.

Bump.
Please......bump.
I think emmc is the internal sdcard, so it makes sense that u can't flash zips from there, but it doesnt seem right.
Are u able to go back to stock using Odin? and if so, will youur sdcards (both internal and external) work on that?
I'm sorry, but as my name suggests, I am a total noob. Is Odin, in a way, a recovery mode that can be launched from your computer? Will I be able to flash the stock rom though Odin? I never knew what Odin is, but I've heard little about it, sorry.

Yes, odin is a flashtool for samsung devices.
You can enter into download mode on your phone by pressing volume down+home+power (while vol up+home+power should be recovery)
Once in there, u connect it to the pc via usb, and then u can flash it via odin.
Get odin from this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539
And samsung usb driver from this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038555
Once the usb drivers are installed, odin (when opened and phone is plugged in in download mode) will recognize your phone, indicated by a colored bar beneath the top left square (cyan if using 3.09 or 3.07)
then download your stock firmware from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ (search for "GT-S7560M") any unbraded will do.
once downloaded, open the AP or PDA button in odin (depends on what version you are using) and load the tar.md5 of the firmware u just downloaded into it.
to the left leave all unchecked except for auto-reboot and f. reset. time and then hit flash.
It will install stock firmware on your phone then
To be entirely sure u get it all right, use this guide too --> http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...08-guide-how-flash-tar-files-odin-3-07-a.html.
Goodluck!
Thank you! I have one more question, after flashing the stock rom, will I be able to flash normally using recovery?

Sorry about that stupid question, I'll just find out myself. Thank you for the help, I really appreciate it.

I don't actually own this model of ace II, so I can not say this with certainty, but I expect it to work again after flashing stock rom back via odin.
Then again, I do hope all has worked and u have found out by now
