So when the new Razr came out for Verizon (cheese) curiosity got the best of me, so I went to check it out. Of course they tried to sell me on it, so I immediately, with chest pushed out, told them I had the fastest phone/4G speeds out there (SG2), and had no need for their gimmicky poop machine. They immediately responded Verizon's LTE will be way faster than TMO's HSDPA, and that our 4G was not real 4G. WTF? How much faster can you get, and I thought LTE being on old CDMA technology wouldn't even be able to come close? Did I put my foot in my mouth, or was that guy just an uninformed kook? I'm confused.

The reps didn't know what they were talking about either. They said hsdpa which is different than hspa+. Their 4g isn't real either unless your over 100mbs it isn't real 4g technology. It just recently got acceptable to to say new technology for mobile wireless. Is acceptable 4g. Lte isn't really old either is hspa+

While true that LTE isn't similar to Verizon's 3G, Not sure what you are talking about, LTE isn't at all like GSM. Hell, it's not even like 3G UTMS. UTMS uses WCDMA and a non IP based protocol, while LTE uses OFDMA and IP. GSM uses FDMA and non IP.

The truth of the matter is that LTE is faster than HSPA+. Verizon's "4G" network is faster than T-Mobile's because LTE is a newer type of technology, yes both are GSM based but T-Mobile's HSPA+ is technically still a 3G GSM network that got a signal boost. LTE is a much newer type of GSM network which can reach much faster speeds, NO its not true 4G speeds of "100mbs" but I have gone into one of Verizon's stores in an LTE location to do a speed test on the Verizon RAZR and got 38mbps on their LTE. the fastest I have gotten on either my Samsung Galaxy S II or My HTC Amaze 4G is 22mbps (Both speed tests done in in Atlanta, GA). T-Mobile DOES have the LARGEST "4G" network because it coincides with their 3G network and it is very fast but not the fastest. You could have thrown out the fact that Verizon's 4G devices are overly priced and kill the battery faster than any other network even with all the "Juice Defener" type of applications and battery savers though hope this helps.
I currently have Sprint as my carrier that now, and long story short, I can get out of this without ETF. How is the overall reception with T-mo and this phone? This phone is becoming more and more attractive phone for me as I keep researching it.

So much better than sprint! I was with sprint for 10 years and have 2x the coverage now....love Tmobile compared to sprint..
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
It depends on where you are. I just came from Verizon and I am very happy with T-mobile and my GS2. The coverage is not as wide spread as what I am used to but it works just as well or better most of the places I go to.
Holy crapolie dude, i recently switched from sprint to tmobi and it was the best thing i have ever done. On sprint i was getting max 600kbps 3g, no wimax ever in my area, on tm avg 12 but have maxed 18fmbs, thats freaking megabits yo.
Galaxy s2 on tm is ok, dumb processor is not as good as exynos but with a good rom and kernel its very good. I get better reception with tm over sprint even. Im in palm springs ca area. I run juggernaut 4.1 rom with faux123 kernel, very happy.

Good to hear from switchers like me. I live in southeast Michigan near Ohio so coverage from Sprint can be spotty. As long as I can get even or better service without paying more, I'm willing to switch. My only fear is I'm switching my family into a worse carrier...how reliable is the coverage map on their website?
And regarding phone, I'm coming from an HTC and I'm getting tired of Sense. Haha.

Ya, I switched my family of 5. It's nice not having to use a damn airave in my house just to get a signal. The map seems pretty accurate....do you know anyone in your area with Tmobile?

I had the Evo4g on sprint recently before this phone. Note my location because my experiences are because of that....
voice reception is so much better on t-mobile. I love being able to send texts on the subway underneath center city, something you can't dream on doing with sprint. When it comes to data..... T-mobile disappoints me. I NEED to use wifi in my house. My evo4g I had full 3g/4g signal. In the rest of the city I find so many data holes its ridiculous. When I do have a data signal I much prefer wimax over hspa. Note I don't have hspa+ service here for some god knows why reason.
If I had good coverage and service I'd love t-mobile and some areas have that but honestly if they don't improve in my area I'm going to terminate my contract when the next generation of phones are released.
I want hspa+ or LTE
I switched from Sprint to Tmo back in August. I was with Sprint for over a year, and from the first day I complained about NO service whatsoever in my own house. Sprint pretty much kept calling me a liar and that I had perfect service, even when I resorted to using my house phone just to make calls.
Then, in August last year, Sprint decided they wanted to up the Administrative Fee to $1.50 and, per their terms and conditions, I can NOT agree to it and have my ETFs waived, and so I did. In a last ditch effort, they decided that they could waive the charge for the Air Rave, after I had complained to them from day one about the dropped calls, and even asked for them to send me an Air Rave for free (which many people in the EVO forums had theirs for free), but at that point, the last nail was already in the coffin, and said my final goodbyes.
Originally got my wife and I both LG G2X's for free (last day they were free, online anyway). Then I added my friend on, got an SGS II for his line, and gave him my G2X. With the APN workaround, good coverage, all is smooth sailing over here in Tmo-land. =D

Nada, I've yet to hear from anyone who has T-Mobile. Areas where I live (Lambertville) seem to have a big coverage over the town with 4G. I'm going to take that as good news since my 3G speeds are crawling where I live on Sprint.

Mhm, HSPA+ blows anything out from other carriers IMO. I don't much care for LTE until battery life is similar or better than that on a HSPA+ enabled carrier.

This I can sort of relate with since I was in Philly for about a week or so. 3G speeds were always above 1.5Mbps and WiMax was even better. I really loved the speeds and if only Sprint had speeds I was getting in Philly around where I live...One can dream right?
Anyways, I think I'm dead set on moving my family to T-Mobile. What is this forum's opinion on the new Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G? If that's coming out soon, then I may just skip on this one and go for the slightly newer one...

So more or less the same thing that happened when T-MO released the Galaxy S 4G as opposed to upgrading the Vibrant? Eh, it probably isn't going to be worth the (extra) price and I'd rather snag this phone over it, since it already has an established development around it.

Hey guys,
I just went from the skyrocket i727 to the galaxy nexus and noticed that the UCLA modem in the skyrocket provided phenomenonal reception. (on 3g not talking about LTE)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1509978
Would there be anyway to figure out why or how? or is it simple the skyrocket has a better antenna?

The Skyrocket does have better reception and data. My wife and daughter both have the skyrocket. Wish we could get there modem would be nice.

My coworker has the Skyrocket. (She got it for a penny 2 weeks before it launched.) She can't even get a reliable signal for calls in our room sometimes. Even though my Galaxy Nexus can be a real wingnut sometimes, I still find it more reliable than my coworker's phone. Still, she did get it for a penny and as a member of the family plan, her bill is $30 a month, data included. I think I wouldn't mind the tradeoff.

Is she on the super modem though?
I hate to break it to you guys, but you have too many variables in your methodology to draw any conclusion. You have not demonstrated that the Skyrocket has a better radio than the Nexus. Unless you're using unlocked phones that you can switch between networks with (which don't exist for LTE yet), you CANNOT compare models on two different networks. You just as likely suggested (not proven either) that AT&T has better LTE coverage in your area.
Here's how you test signal strength between phones: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5254/investigating-the-galaxy-nexus-lte-signal-issue
Note that they're all on the same network and are right next to each other during the test. Due to how radio waves can bounce around inside buildings, having to phones in different parts of the same room is NOT PROOF. They have to be as close as possible and even then they can end up getting different signal.
I'm talking about the GSM versions of both....both unlocked and running on the same network...
My unscientific test was simply..nexus doesn't work in basement but my skyrocket does with the new modem
Fyi I'm on telus Canada which supports 3g hspda and lte) but no LTE in my region yet
T-mobile is pretty evil in my opinion. The galaxy s3 should get the liability to be able to connect to LTE on their network. It isn't fair that they removed LTE capability via a software update. Proof; appleandroidguide on YouTube, watch the first video and you will see
I buy my phones based on what they can do the day I buy them, not what may happen in the future. It would be nice to have the LTE option but I never really expected it despite the promises made by sales staff and customer service. I will go buy a full blown LTE phone if I feel the need.
Sorry but your wrong, the only phone T-Mobile has for sale that has the LTE capabilities is the Note II because its exactly the same as the AT&T version. If you open it up you will find out that the phone may have an LTE radio but no antenna, like the Nexus 4. And really you should but your phone on what you can do now, not down the road.

You gotta ask yourself... Do you really need it?
And if you do ( for reasons such as deeper penetration into buildings so you actually get 4g where you live or work or whatever..not just for faster 4g) then sell your s3 and buy an lte s3 or s4.
Your s3 was launched a year ago..that's a long time in technology. Get over it.

Okay how is it a scam? If you bought the phone when it came out(1yr ago) Tmobile wasn't even hinting at lte. You bought the phone with an understanding of what it was capable of. Most people aren't xda people. They don't go on forums and check out detailed specs sheets and breakdowns inquiring about possibilities of a phones hardware. Sometimes I think its a curse to have such knowledge as we know more than the Tmobile reps or any carrier reps do. The xda community is a minority. They aren't going to change anything for us. They know if people want stuff bad enough they will either leave, pay , or stay where they are at. Tmobile will not bend for you or anyone. You know how hard it was for me to get credit from them for something they did (680++$$) ??? Over a week on the phone.

Just Ranting but here !!
Come on guys Really ? Technogoloy changes so fast these days no and keep up unless you have deep pockets filled with money and still while your standing there while to pay for it a something newer faster nicer sweeter will come a few days after you buy it. This is the name of technology sales my friends. I get HSDPA+ . Sprint pushes out Samsung S3 to people telling them “ Oh it 4G and LTE soon” in the NYC area but out side of the 2-5 miles you may get 3G that’s is it sometimes and another times crap. These carriers for there not for you but for your $$$$. So that’s why I buy my T-mobile phone based on what they can do and for how long. The very fact that you can pull out the sim card and just drop it in a other T-mobile just is a plus. Is this not why we are here because after we Root our phone and we come here for what they don’t give us?
You may enjoy the speed now but think about internetwork operability and the plans to launch voice over LTE via VoIP-based technology and its a no brainer that its something you want.
Keep in mind, it may take entirely new radio technology to take advantage of VoLTE so buying an LTE phone may already be outdated by this year which, besides economic factors, is why I'm waiting to see what happens in 3Q and 4Q
http://www.extremetech.com/tag/volte
If I remember correctly, the T999 gs3 doesn't even have an LTE chip in the phone. That's what tmobile is releasing the T999L that INCLUDES the LTE radio. The OP is an idiot, and if idiots dont wanna take the time to research and learn about stuff, then they deserve every bad thing that happens.
It does have the lte chip but it isn't activated and won't be because they went a different way with lte bands.

Knowing this, and the fact that absolutely nothing has changed in terms of what has been said about this phone from either Tmo or Samsung about this phone having lte capabilities, there is no scam. where I would disagree is in your statement about nothing has changed. I too was told multiple times before buying the phone towards the end of the year that it was lte ready and would get it once it came out.
The phone has an LTE amplifier for 700mhz and 1700mhz bands but no modem is mentioned. I would be curious to see a teardown of the V model... Its supposed to be identical to T-Mobile from what I understand...
So it has the lte radio but not the correct one? I been reading different threads on this figuring out if i was gonna get one but don't know if i want to. What lte bands does TMobile use

Hi
I activated a tmobile online only offer, 30$ for 100 min, unlimited text and first 5 gb at 4g speeds. The phone can't get 4g but it's still fast, when it's in a refarmed area. I'm living in DC and I say "as long" because even though DC should be all refarmed, as I go to work I often go to edge... I guess it's just based on the different towers and the phone switching from one another... Unluckily I work in an area without a refarmed tower...
I was so frustrated that I bought a nexus 4 to always have h+! Used it 2 weeks and went back to the Note today... I just like it better, even if with the h+/edge thing going on...
I am considering on getting straightalk, so that I can go on an att network. I believe the phone would work fine and att should have better coverage. I still have to look into it. I don't know if it would be h+ but having always 3g is better than having h+ sometimes...
With straight talk att you would get hspa+ (4). I'm curious about the t mobile service working though.
The N7100 will only get edge data on TMobile's network. Yes TMobile is moving their HSPA+ to 1900 Mhz but it is nowhere near complete and even cities that people claim are already converted have spotty coverage. Sell your N7100 and buy a TMobile Note2 or buy an ATT Note2 and do the AWS mod to it. For the transition, it's best to have a phone that covers both 1700 and 1900. Note2s are dropping in price. I just bought 2 like new TMobile Notes for $400 each.
