I usually hate threads like this but I have a question to keep my sanity.
So I am getting a kindle fire for a friend, I am looking for something I won't have to constantly be fixing it for things other than small normal stuff.
That being said there are only 2 qualifiers with this:
1. Needs to be AOSP based
2. And I'd prefer it to be CM9 or Newer
And this sleep of death thing scares me ( yes I know reboot fixes just not trying to deal with it)

I have found that ICS ROMs run best on Kindle Fires. I currently use twa_priv's CM9 rom and I have no problems with it. And battery life is pretty good.

When the first Kindle came out my girlfriend insisted on getting it. Worked okay at first, but quickly became unstable/broken. She asked if I could do anything to make it better. Loaded several custom roms and she always came back saying it was the same story. Worked okay for a few days. Most often the browser randomly closes. Sometimes as soon as you open it.
I've been unable thus far to find something that is reliable.
I am going to give your suggestion a try.
I've been using CM 10.1 for a week now with zero problems. I mostly use it for games, but also Browsing, Flipboard, Netflix, and various other apps. No issues other than the battery drains faster than it did stock. But that was expected.

And this is why these posts are closed and lead to no where. Here we have one person saying yes and another no. "Stable" is subjective because of how differently we use a rom. Different apps/settings/usage.
The best advice anyone can give is to try it out for yourself and find out if it works for you
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA
The ROM itself is pretty stable but it depends which applications you install, then it gets tricky. I've used it for two weeks with mixed results. Battery life was meh, but it was a decent ROM. Got rid of it today and went back to GB 2.3.7 cause its ROCK FREAKING SOLID (BlackICE 1.6)
P.S: I agree with the guy above me ^ flash the ROM yourself and see if it's stable for you, install some apps you'd normally use, setup email, tweak it as you like it e.t.c. Only then can you see if its stable for your uses
using it as my daily driver, no reboots, even though im a pretty heavy user, just make sure to try different kernels, for example i feel like the performance and battery is better on the bfs kernel rather than CFS.... and the room is VERY smooth
Right now I am currently using the stock Rom on my kindle, mainly because of the battery life. I wanted to switch over to Standing on the shoulder of giants but soon after I did, I discovered that the volume is way lower than stock. Is there a Rom that fixes this problem?

Maybe try Hellfire CM7 or Barebones......I am currently running an even more stripped down version of Barebones and the audio volume is fine. I remember running (standing on the shoulders of giants) many months ago and trying to correct audio volume inadequacies with speaker boosting apps which in the end created more issues
.....when you hit the walls of sanity, you have no-where to go.....

Personally I prefer the Barebones ROM because I like my ROMs lightweight and basic as far as CM7 goes. For some reason I wasn't able to do step 2 of the Barebones flash which was a backup(maybe its because an update with TWRP...maybe I did it wrong...IDK.....it worked many months ago with older version of TWRP) but the only stuff that had was the little tweaks that the poster added in. No worries though as I got the ICS theme elsewhere anyways.
I've run Hellfire CM7 but it included too many apps, which might be good for some as it includes Gapps and the Amazon Market app. Both Hellfire and Barebones have the same kernal which can be overclocked to 1.2GHz. I installed Hellfire on my wife's Kindle and she is pretty happy with it.
Recently I tried a CM7 ROM from Goo Manager that was last updated on 11-04-12 but I kept getting the dreaded SoD so I went back to Barebones.
Hope that helps

Thanks i think i will flash Barebones.

I see a lot of posters here cheer for CleanGB so you might wanna check that out, as for me I always like to try the latest so now I'm sticking with CM10.1 preview!
The People's ROM is a good ROM. So is CM10 stable. But I'm running latest CM10.1 ROM and its amazing.

The Peoples Rom is a solid Rom with great battery life. All the CM roms have been great for me and CM10.1 is no exception, but I'd try a few to see what you like best.
Now should I just run the custom kernel and modem that comes with the cm rom? I'm having issues with mms and Wi-Fi tether

NEVER ask what's the best ROM!
They ALL are for the users that use them. No one can tell you what is the best for YOU. You need to read and decide for yourself if a ROM suits you.

Your modem does not change but the kernel will. The one that comes with CM10.1 is a 3.xxx based kernel and is smooth. I'd recommend running the rom as is for a few days and see how you like it.
I agree with you Kenny, but what an amazing work! everything is fast & fluid, colors are vibrant and beautiful.. I have been hanging around Epic forums for more than a year and this is the first time I saw something like this! you really had put a lot of work behind this, well done :good:
Been lurking and playing for a while now...
First off, I'm really impressed with the work the developers do here! OMG, it's giving my Epic new life and more. My wife like my phone so much, she asked me to root hers and put JB on it!
That being said, there's really a lot of choices, and almost every ROM makes a good daily driver. The question is what your threshold is for having things you're willing to put up with to get the cool new features these ROMs provide.
Here's my experience in the last 4 months - I started with CM9, and while I really liked it, I had some issues where it seemed to run hot at times. I added all the build.prop tweaks for increasing battery life, and once the stable version came out, I was pretty stoked. After a couple of weeks, I tried CM10 nightlies (my current ROM, 2013-01-20. I LOVE it! I added the 4.2 gapps camera and Gallery to enhance it a bit).
I expected the worst, because I work with developers and the term "nightlies" is never something we show to the public. In reality, aside from some initial issues with rebooting on earlier builds, it's been awesome.
This past couple of weeks, I decided to check out the waters and tried CM 10.1, and ran it for over two weeks - even put it on my wife's phone. It was like buttah until it randomly rebooted in the middle of a business call. I figure, once it goes to nightlies, I'll try it out again. Still itching, I tried ParanoidAndroid 4.1.2, and also AOKP Alpha 4.2.1 build. Both builds were stable and pretty polished, but battery life was better with CM10 - at least for the time-being. If you like to have lots of control over how your phone looks and acts, you can't go wrong with either ROM. I went back to CM10 mostly because it runs everything, especially Dead Space, which I couldn't get to work on any other ROM.
So, there's not really a "best" - it depends on what you want, and can put up with if there are issues.
Hey guys this is my first posting in the kindle section so be nice. I flashed hashcodes cm10 on my girls kindle like 3 months ago and she is having major battery drain problems like from full charge to dead on a day just from stand by. Is there anything I should look into like settings wise or another rom. She just wants a rom that is compatible with an external keyboard. Thanks guys and girls

It's normal for that generation of ROMs. Feel free to install ROMs with latest Hash's kernel, it's not draining more than 1% during the night stand-by. I can tell You for sure that Twa-priv's ROMs are working with external keyboards, assume it's the same with all of them with same kernel.
Alright thanks guys

With the unlocked bootloader and rom development I figured this would be a good time for people to post their own experiences and preferences thus far with what they have tried. Be as detailed or as vague as you want and maybe we can help some folks make up their own minds.
For me, I have tried 2 somewhat extensively. CM 10.1 and AOKP.
- CM 10.1 - For me, it was exactly what people have been saying. It's basically stock 4.2.2. I didn't give it enough time to experience it's battery life. It seemed stable, but for all of the "trouble" I went to (I'm not very technology savvy), I felt like I wanted to get a little more out of a custom rom.
- AOKP - After short tests of Carbon and PAC, I hopped over to AOKP. Super customizable. I love to nitpick over settings on my phone anyway, so this played right into my preferences. It's very quick. Didn't feel any different from CM 10.1 as that was quick too. But both are snappier than stock. Battery life seems either the same or better than stock. I am just really enjoying this rom. Haven't run into any real serious issues. Although I will recommend that you go into developer settings and disable HW overlays. This will assist in better Web scrolling more smoothly for whatever reason. The only other minor issue I've seen relates to when the phone is booting up, for a quick moment you'll see a fuzz screen for maybe a third of a second. Nothing major, but would like to see it hopefully ironed out at some point.
- Carbon & PAC - Will consider giving them some good time in the future if I ever start feeling adventurous.
Overall it's nice being able to really do what I want with my M with root, an unlocked bootloader, and a custom ROM. After all, android is about options, isn't it?

I've seen some posts from you before, are you still running stock? If so do a nan droid back up of your stock to an external SD card first. Never know when you might need it For example, I used it to fix GPS issues with Carbon.

I actually prefer Stock over all the custom ROMs. Seems that I run into stability issues with everything else. I liked Eclipse, and I'm running CM 10.1 right now. As for all the others, I've tried and dismissed them all, mostly due to too many fcs.

Hi all, first post in xda forum! Just rooted my phone last week and immediately started flashing ROMs. I found that most of the ones I used had issues like camera not working and wasn't able to transfer all of my contacts for some reason. Never the less I really liked elemental x which is developed by the same person who developed eclipse I believe. I really enjoyed the aesthetics it offered especially changing the color of the navbar which unfortunately I couldn't find without using a ROM. So I decided to go and get the version he was working on before which is Eclipse. installed it today loving it so far. camera works fine but still don't have all my old contacts. Hope that wasn't too long, feel free to comment.

Sync your contacts with Goggle and you should always be able to restore them.
As for ROMs, I'm on Slim and I've been on it for a while. I ran AOKP for about 2 weeks and it had the best battery life out of any of the AOSP ROMs. However, I like the custom options of Slim and I'm using Marxman's port of it.

Thank you for your response is the advice on syncing to Google was very helpful. have all my contacts again. as for the camera I don't believe it was permissions issue and can't remember if I tried fixing the permissions. I might install the ROM again just check. The camera wasn't force closing it was just blank when it came up. Also I get keyboard errors when trying to use other ROMs. Has anyone else gotten that?

I agree that most roms are more unstable than stock.
I am waiting for miui to become stable. It has the first readable status bar that I know of. Anyone care to enlighten me about roms that have "white on black" options?
I would like to find a stock, deodexed, initd'ed & like the DST at Rzr but its not deodexed.

I've tried both Pac and Carbon. Pac had more options, Carbon seemed snappier but with more fc's. I threw Liquid smooth when it showed up on goo a few weeks ago and I have settled down with it. It has been fast and very stable.
