Disable physical power button - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Is there anyway to disable my physical power button? It is a faulty button which causes the phone to go into random boot loops so I avoid using it all together now and was wondering of there is anyway to disable it.

It might be possible by editing some code, pretty much making the power button obsolete, but I've no clue how to do that. Sorry I couldn't be of much help but best of luck to you!

get yourself a new phone or trade it in for the same phone with your carrier if under warranty, other than that idont know if its possible to disable the power button, am not a DEV thats for sure
or just avoid it easy
setting the home button to do everything if possible that would work
running Synergy Rom 4.1.2 with Ziggy kernel using ATT Galaxy S3 I747

I believe there are apps on the play store and some here on xda for button remapping... Some are kernel specific though...

Thanks I'll look into this.
The problem is about 6 months ago I dropped the phone from about 2 feet and it cracked.. Right across the screen. But everything continued to work fine up until 2 months ago. But because of the crack I can't do much for replacing phone

Questions about software buttons

So, in contemplating upgrading to this phone, but here's my concern: When full-screen apps like YouTube force close, or when I want to exit and stop watching the current video, what do I do?
Is there a way to hack the buttons so that they stay on the screen at ALL times, regardless of the app running such that the on screen buttons are essentially equivalent to hardware/capacitive buttons?

Buttons r hidden when play YouTube video. When tap anywhere on the screen, all buttons reappear.
Actually, I would prefer all apps can auto hide the buttons to get full screen. Looks so much nicer...

But what if the YouTube app hangs and the phone freezes? Is a battery pull the only way?
Sent from my x10 mini running the latest version of minicm 7.
i think the buttons would still show up (they are not part of the youtube app)
When playing videos, it will go to full screen and 1 tap of the screen will show the buttons. Most of the time the buttons will disappear and be replaced by 3 barley lite circles.

Oh, I see. Thanks. And what I meant was that both the app and the phone freeze. Is there a way to force reboot when the phone totally hangs? Like, using some button combination like how it is possible on my current device?

Just thinking out loud here. But if the app force closes on you, you can pick the force close button that pops up or it will just close itself and bring you back to your home screen. So no problems there really, and also I don't see why so many people are scared to pull the battery out of their phones? Is it just because of the hassle? Otherwise I see people saying they're scared of breaking the back cover?
Uhm, that's not what I mean. I mean the app totally hangs and the phone freezes too, not responding to touch input.

Battery pull.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
even if u did have hardware buttons and the phone freezed ud still have to do a battery pull, ive witnessed it a few times when working with my droid eris..
Yeah, currently the only way to force a reboot is through pulling the battery. On my Galaxy S i9000 you could hold Power + Home and it would reboot even if the phone was totally frozen

same thing on my current phone. Doing battery pulls is a terrible pain if I have installed a protective casing.
@mrbig0 see what I quoted

If your whole phone freezes (shouldn't) then of course you have to do a battery pull regardless of the ROM you're running or what buttons you have...
^My experience, reading above apparently some phones do so. Regardless, I use my phone 10 hours + daily and have never had the whole phone freeze.
To the OP, the phone never really freezes. Ive been with android since donut and this phone has been the most stable even with custom roms. I think I've only had one force close the whole month I've had the phone and it's never completely frozen on me. You dont have anything to worry about.

Not true. On my current phone, pressing a button combo will reboot the phone whether it's frozen or not. It's a hard reset.

thats true, i never mess with set cpu or set speeds, but if that's the case then battery pulls might be necessary haha
I never have experienced it with the Samsung Galaxy nexus and I did crazy things.

Multi touch problems

I've searched around a bit but could not find an answer do I apologize if it has been answered already but it seems like when I use multi touch a game or something it will not work while my thumb is in the bottom right corner in landscape. This is only while doing multi touch though. Another quick question out of curiosity, it seems that lg charger don't really play nice with this phone. The 2 I have tried didn't work so I was just wondering if someone else could try this. I am unrooted and have the lte version. Thanks for the help.

This is a known issue. You will have to wait for some one more knowledge to better explain it though
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
i can't explain it, but it is a bug and your not alone.
quick fix is to press power to shut off the screen, then turn it back on. I've done this in cordy about a dozen times now and it works perfectly.

Anyone know how to remove volume wake on 4.2 ROMs??

I have been using nexus evolution ROM ....I usually have my phone in my pocket and anytime the phone is asleep and the volume button is accidentally pressed it wakes up the phone...and then things get pressed etc....I went thru a couple a forums and thru the ROM settings and couldn't find it...if anyone can help, I would really appreciate it

depends entirely on what rom you are on.
in paranoid android it is in the lockscreen section of the settings. i would assume most other roms would use similar.

S3 lock screen pin bypass

The bug that affects the s3 and note 2 works on our at&t s3. If you use a pin for security on your lock screen, you can bypass it by hitting...
- Emergency call
- Emergency contacts
- the home button
- the power button
It takes some timing on the power button but if you keep trying you will get it. It makes the lock screen disabled until reboot and also the notification bar doesn't work but is quite a security flaw.
This is verified on my bone stock unrooted s3.
I have seen this posted in the international s3 forum but not for at&t, so I figured I would share

This only affects touchwiz.
Yeah, guess I'll have to move to cm or another aosp based ROM. Security is sort of a big thing for me. This is sad though I would think Samsung would be pushing a fix quickly with the whole safe for enterprise thing.

Unbelievable. This same thing happened when I had the S2!!!

Lose the phone... first thing to do is change google account password.
Hopefully Samsung patches it soon! (Already posted in the S III General forum.)
Hmmn I am unable to repro I can get close. I can get back to the home screen without actually unlocking but almost instantly the password screen reappears

It takes some timing on the power button. It took me about ten tries but eventually worked.

I've just confirmed that this actually works (unfortunately).
Now that this method has been publicized on the web, Samsung and our carriers WILL have to roll-out an update (such as 4.2.1) with immediate effect to remedy this flaw.
For an apology, they can also add the Premium Suite in the update for the rest of us who have been ignored.
Has anyone tested this after updating Lookout Mobile Security to the latest version? It's supposed to provide a temporary fix.

Wake up lag?

Hello, just got my gn 10.1 2014 edition ans I love it, now I am noticing when I press the home/power button, it takes 2 seconds to turn on the lights of the lock screen or to wake up. Is it normal? How can I fix it without rooting it?
Thanks a lot.

It's an issue with 4.3. I've read mixed reports as to whether this was fixed in 4.4 or not.

Still present on Kitkat.
What's your definition of wake up lag? It was noticeable on 4.3. It's no worse than my N3 on 4.4.
On my 605 lte i really had that lag on stock 4.3 Portuguese rom but since i upgraded to HongKong's 4.3 stock rom :

The wake up lag was definitely gone !!!

That figures.
And again and again... one side their are some who have this lag and on the other side are also some who haven't - so I. When I press the power or home button then immediately the screen and button lights lit. No lag and 4.3 and also on 4.4.2.
And no, until now their are some tips to reduce the lag when you have it but the real reason is not found.
So, please, be correct and say that some have this lag.
Ive had lag appear recently.... I dont know whats caused it :/
I really forgot what is the main cause but search for it, i think it has something to do with voice comand enabled!
as i know its SD card , remove it and try again , why this didnt happen on my note 2 when it was on 4.1.2 but it happen on 4.3 and still exist in 4.4.2
on my note 2014 , sometime insta wake even after long deep sleep , and sometimes take like 1sec

Most likely caused by having an SD card in the tablet on earlier versions of the firmware. Remove the SD card or update. On my P605 the update to the Hongkong firmware made this go away.
First, I never mention about all devices, I said that is something happening to my note 10.1 2014 edition. Tried with no sd card. Hard factory reset and nothing. Oh also tried the s voice and no success. I know is not only me. We have a few people that have this problem. On my galaxy note 3 I have no problem. When I press the lock or power button the light shows up immediately. But on my tablet it takes 1 or 2 sec to light up.

Hello,
Is it possible to just update the firmware without breaking the rom? I'm on Cleanrom 2.0 R2
Running KitKat and Nova Prime, the delay is still there. Remove the card and the delay is gone.
