S3 lock screen pin bypass - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

The bug that affects the s3 and note 2 works on our at&t s3. If you use a pin for security on your lock screen, you can bypass it by hitting...
- Emergency call
- Emergency contacts
- the home button
- the power button
It takes some timing on the power button but if you keep trying you will get it. It makes the lock screen disabled until reboot and also the notification bar doesn't work but is quite a security flaw.
This is verified on my bone stock unrooted s3.
I have seen this posted in the international s3 forum but not for at&t, so I figured I would share

This only affects touchwiz.

Yeah, guess I'll have to move to cm or another aosp based ROM. Security is sort of a big thing for me. This is sad though I would think Samsung would be pushing a fix quickly with the whole safe for enterprise thing.

Unbelievable. This same thing happened when I had the S2!!!

Lose the phone... first thing to do is change google account password.

Hopefully Samsung patches it soon! (Already posted in the S III General forum.)

Hmmn I am unable to repro I can get close. I can get back to the home screen without actually unlocking but almost instantly the password screen reappears

It takes some timing on the power button. It took me about ten tries but eventually worked.

I've just confirmed that this actually works (unfortunately).
Now that this method has been publicized on the web, Samsung and our carriers WILL have to roll-out an update (such as 4.2.1) with immediate effect to remedy this flaw.
For an apology, they can also add the Premium Suite in the update for the rest of us who have been ignored.

Has anyone tested this after updating Lookout Mobile Security to the latest version? It's supposed to provide a temporary fix.

on demand lockscreen?

searched but couldn't find it so hopefully someone can help.....
i always have my phone right next to me but have my phone set up with a pattern unlock security for those moments that i leave it somewhere in a hurry and not worry about someone being able to get into my stuff but since 95% its right next to me i hate having to do the pattern unlock even though i can do the pattern fast i prefer not have too... so is there an app or shortcut so i can have my phone without a lock but for those quick moments that i need it locked i can activate it with just pressing that app instead of having to go into settings and manually setting it up again then remove it?
Not sure if there is an app specifically for that. Best I can think of is you might be able to set a condition using a app like tasker or impel. Basically, "if I press this button then enable this" I'm not sure how well or if this would even work but its worth a look I suppose.

I have been using no lock from the market.. It works great to flip your lock screen on or off. Works great on GB.. Flaky on ICS

I don't know of any particular app that does that but I just set my security settings to automatically lock with a delay. I generally leave it at about one or two minutes.

I am using NO LOCK right now on ICS and yea it's not perfect but I can keep the PIN CODE lockscreen and then use the app to disable it when I want.

Tried this and so far working great just what i was looking for. Hopefully someone can figure out a way for the phone to do it without having to install a third party app, but for now NO LOCK is working great. Thanks.

I did this but ill use it for a quick minute or less then it will shut off then at the time i turn the screen back on its locked and i have to unlock it and what i wanted was when suddenly i have to put my phone down and i want it to be locked with a push of a button without having to go into settings and setting it up . thanks either way as well.
Tasker will do anything you can possibly think of. Including this.

No Lock No Work But...
No Lock didn't work but a different app from the store call No Lock Screen works like a charm (for the exact problem you described).
hey @Ma$etas , do you found another app or way to solve your problem ?
Same as you, I need on demand lock screen, I lock when I want. I didn't want to unlock using pattern or pin every time I use my phone.
But, I need to lock it sometimes. If I left my phone on desk, when I'm sleeping and any other condition

Ooohh so sad
like I do, until now i'm still do manual screen lock as needed

Which security do you use? Face Pattern Pin Pass

what one do you use i use face unlock because of the speed hby
it varies on the level of security I need. lol
face unlock is sweet but doesnt work in low lighting
pattern is cool but easy for peeking eyes to guess your code (found this out hard way lol)
plus ive got into peoples phones just by looking at the pattern left in the oil on the screen LMAO!
so for me, i use pin more than anything
I went old school with this one. I do not let other people have access to my phone.
Ha yea pattern is easily recognized by a wandering eye and old fashion way works the best
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I use a combination of the old fashioned way, a pattern, and delayed lock with a widget locker lockscreen so I don't get bothered to unlock with the pattern every few minutes when I'm using it intermittently.

Pattern
Face unlock showed up in the battery stats pretty high when I tried it so I ditched it

I use no lock but I have Cerberus installed, so that if my phone is stolen, I can lock it remotely.
How's that for security?
No lock here also, and I don't leave my phone setting out so anyone can grab it.
Face unlock takes too long to show up. Slide is easiest

I only have one form of security.
if you touch my phone I will EAT YOU. Literally. I get hungry.
if I don't catch you I will use the tracking program I have installed.
HUNT YOU DOWN and then eat you.
either way your lunch I get my phone back and a full tummy
Grrrrr
I don't like it that patterns and passwords show buttons changing color or trails in the direction you're tracing. Someone nearby could easily watch what you're doing and figure out your pattern or password/code. Also, I wasn't pleased that when I tried using a very long string of numbers, you were limited to something like seventeen or less. I put something like my drivers license number and social strung together but the phone wouldn't take 21 numbers. The reason I picked such a long number sequence is in case someone was watching me enter my code, I kinda doubt they could follow and memorize such a long string easily; especially if entered quickly.

Exactly. How is people witnessing me beating someone with my cell phone for security? Reminds me of a certain commercial as well lol. Security is way too inconvenient to protect my works number or all the XDA browsing I do. About the only thing that matters is the gmail and the ability to buy things.
Take a photo of yourself with another device. hold it up in front of the phone with face unlock enabled. unlock your device

I've tried all of them just try to change it up on a daily basis lol. Nephews n nieces always wanna play games on it. Has anyone noticed that in a lot of a roms that just bringing down the notification bar will give you access to the phone even if it has some sort of security.

Good luck. Yes it does work at times. But I have had other people try it on me and NONE of them have succeeded.
But thats also why Samsung is changing it to require blinking.
When I do lock, I prefer app protector pro, and have it set to lock all the incriminating essentials lol (with a pattern lock)

Smart Stay

Doesn't appear that Smart Stay is working on my N8, the front camera works and the is no screen protector to mess with it. Works fine on mt Note 3 and the GS3 a hen I had it.
Is there a fix for this for a non rooted N8?
Sent from my GT-N5110 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hmm.. Try clearing your cache, there are a number of apps that can do that or goto the application manager and find settings then clear it there. After that reboot your device. I'll keep looking around for some other ideas (I'm rooted so I have to figure out what you can do). What leads you to believe it is broken (not saying it isn't just looking for symptoms).
This is my 4th Samsung device that has had it, GS3, N2, N3, and now the N8. On the others when I'm reading something say xda or G+ or whatever the screen stays on unless I lay the device down. With the N8 I'll be reading an X the screen will dim. I also see a message in the notification area with something about not seeing eyes or the like doesn't stay long enough to really read. I think it does work sometimes, if I turn it off it gets worse..
I will clean the cache followed by a reboot and see what happens

New question - can anyone help?

I just got a new Note 10.1 2014. I haven't yet rooted it though I plan to.
There must be a simple answer to this though I can't find it.* I have three Note 2s, a Note 3, and have been routing phones for many years going back to early HTC Windows phones. But alas I haven't found what must be a self evident to most.
How do I get rid of this persistent constant Samsung advertisement for the Note 10.1 features.* When I go into sleep (by this I mean push the power button briefly -- not power off) or close the lid so the screen goes dark, within a few seconds the screen starts up again with this never ending advertisement that begins with a helicopter flying and then proceeds with video of every feature of the device - at least from Samsung's perspective. So last night I put the device to sleep with a full battery charge and didn't realize the screen was reactivated by this b annoyance and was on all night even though the cover was closed. In the morning the device was off with zero battery.
I don't know if they consider this a screen saver or what but I can't find how to turn it off.
Can someone help?* Thank you very much.

Might be that you have daydream feature and it came with a small demo of the tablet's features. Check under display settings to see if that's the problem.

Thanks, I checked the daydream feature under display setting and it is off. So this is something else. Any other ideas?

It sounds like it's in some type of demo mode. I've never seen what you're describing including the first time I turned it on out-of-the-box. Did you buy it open-box or as a former floor model? You might want to try a hard reset and see if it's still there afterward.
It is using it as a screen saver. Set wallpaper. lock screen - and change/stop it...
Check under device administrators too
I think changing screen saver might have been the way to go and would probably have fixed it (though I don't know). But I did a hard reset and all is now right with the world. Thanks for all of your help guys. I appreciate it

Overly sensitive lockscreen

Just like the title says, am I the only one to have an overly sensitive lock screen? Using AOSB ROM and whenever I'm using the pattern lock screen and I want to unlock the device, halfway thru I'll be cut off. At first I thought maybe its because I have disabled the ability to see the pattern, so I enabled the ability to see if there's any difference and sure enough I'm still getting cut off while I'm inputting the password. I have the same ROM for my Galaxy Note 2 and Samsung Tab 2 7.0 and its not appearing in either devices. Using this tablet for its 4th day so far so I'm not sure if it's a device issue or because I did something to my tablet.
