Doesn't appear that Smart Stay is working on my N8, the front camera works and the is no screen protector to mess with it. Works fine on mt Note 3 and the GS3 a hen I had it.
Is there a fix for this for a non rooted N8?

Hmm.. Try clearing your cache, there are a number of apps that can do that or goto the application manager and find settings then clear it there. After that reboot your device. I'll keep looking around for some other ideas (I'm rooted so I have to figure out what you can do). What leads you to believe it is broken (not saying it isn't just looking for symptoms).
This is my 4th Samsung device that has had it, GS3, N2, N3, and now the N8. On the others when I'm reading something say xda or G+ or whatever the screen stays on unless I lay the device down. With the N8 I'll be reading an X the screen will dim. I also see a message in the notification area with something about not seeing eyes or the like doesn't stay long enough to really read. I think it does work sometimes, if I turn it off it gets worse..
I will clean the cache followed by a reboot and see what happens

Got my GN few days ago and i absolutely love it!
everything is buttery smooth but Ive noticed a little lag/stutter when i go to the recent call log on the phone app, swiping down to get to the bottom.
it only happens the first time (when u get to the bottom of the call log, after that everything is smooth again)
and i can exit out of the phone app, get back to it after 1-2min and its still lag-free, but if i come back after lets say 10 or so min, even if i didn't closed the phone app from the multitasking menu - it will stutter again (tho again - first swipe only)
now, when u go to people app and scroll the whole contacts (i have 400+ there), its smooth every single time! even when closed in multitasking menu or even when opening it after long time.
did anyone noticed that or is it just my device?
Yeah it's normal don't worry. They are probably cached at different priorities.

The bug that affects the s3 and note 2 works on our at&t s3. If you use a pin for security on your lock screen, you can bypass it by hitting...
- Emergency call
- Emergency contacts
- the home button
- the power button
It takes some timing on the power button but if you keep trying you will get it. It makes the lock screen disabled until reboot and also the notification bar doesn't work but is quite a security flaw.
This is verified on my bone stock unrooted s3.
I have seen this posted in the international s3 forum but not for at&t, so I figured I would share

This only affects touchwiz.
Yeah, guess I'll have to move to cm or another aosp based ROM. Security is sort of a big thing for me. This is sad though I would think Samsung would be pushing a fix quickly with the whole safe for enterprise thing.

Unbelievable. This same thing happened when I had the S2!!!

Lose the phone... first thing to do is change google account password.
Hopefully Samsung patches it soon! (Already posted in the S III General forum.)
Hmmn I am unable to repro I can get close. I can get back to the home screen without actually unlocking but almost instantly the password screen reappears

It takes some timing on the power button. It took me about ten tries but eventually worked.

I've just confirmed that this actually works (unfortunately).
Now that this method has been publicized on the web, Samsung and our carriers WILL have to roll-out an update (such as 4.2.1) with immediate effect to remedy this flaw.
For an apology, they can also add the Premium Suite in the update for the rest of us who have been ignored.
Has anyone tested this after updating Lookout Mobile Security to the latest version? It's supposed to provide a temporary fix.

So just now my screen started flickering and it goes black when I slide my keyboard out, but a simple power on-off fixes it.
First of all, this is very tidious and annoying to do -.-
Second, I fear the screen will eventually stop working at all.
So my question, has anyone experienced this before and can give me and info on it? Would flashing a new Rom probably fix it? It doesn't seem to affect anything else at this moment, but I don't know what this little glitch will lead to.

A lil more info, the screen seems to flash on/off at the second I slide the screen up. When the screen goes black, it still works and responds to any touch as normal, but I just can't see anything at all.
Could this be a LCD problem? Or screen brightness?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Well, my gut tells me that the back light is going out, but I can't be sure. Is the screen really dark (as in, you can barely see anything in it if you shine a flashlight on the screen) or is it off (can't see anything in it at all, even with the flashlight). Also, what ROM are you using and so on?
Thanks for your help, but I'm getting used to it now. When I decide to flash a new ROM, if that solves it then great, and if not, I guess ill just use the phone till the screen blows out. This is only my media phone so its not a big deal and since the problem hasn't gotten worse over the 2 weeks I'm hoping it won't.

I just got a new Note 10.1 2014. I haven't yet rooted it though I plan to.
There must be a simple answer to this though I can't find it.* I have three Note 2s, a Note 3, and have been routing phones for many years going back to early HTC Windows phones. But alas I haven't found what must be a self evident to most.
How do I get rid of this persistent constant Samsung advertisement for the Note 10.1 features.* When I go into sleep (by this I mean push the power button briefly -- not power off) or close the lid so the screen goes dark, within a few seconds the screen starts up again with this never ending advertisement that begins with a helicopter flying and then proceeds with video of every feature of the device - at least from Samsung's perspective. So last night I put the device to sleep with a full battery charge and didn't realize the screen was reactivated by this b annoyance and was on all night even though the cover was closed. In the morning the device was off with zero battery.
I don't know if they consider this a screen saver or what but I can't find how to turn it off.
Can someone help?* Thank you very much.

Might be that you have daydream feature and it came with a small demo of the tablet's features. Check under display settings to see if that's the problem.

Thanks, I checked the daydream feature under display setting and it is off. So this is something else. Any other ideas?

It sounds like it's in some type of demo mode. I've never seen what you're describing including the first time I turned it on out-of-the-box. Did you buy it open-box or as a former floor model? You might want to try a hard reset and see if it's still there afterward.
It is using it as a screen saver. Set wallpaper. lock screen - and change/stop it...
Check under device administrators too
I think changing screen saver might have been the way to go and would probably have fixed it (though I don't know). But I did a hard reset and all is now right with the world. Thanks for all of your help guys. I appreciate it

Hi, just got an HTC One m8 2 weeks back.
I would like to know whether it's possible for me to schedule movie downloads to occur at midnight etc. I get peak and off peak data so trying to make use of the off peak data without having to stay up till 1am. I tried some apps, like IFTTT but no dice.
Anyone have any workaround?
Also, how do I know whether my camera is suffering from the scratched lens issue? I can't seem to tell.
Regards,
Ishaq

Try a download manager app, such as Advanced Download Manager. I think ADM (and others) has this feature.

If you can't tell, you probably don't have an issue. Once the coating on the lens starts to get scratched (its just the coating coming off, not the glass being scratched), you can actually see the scratches if you look closely at the lens. But more importantly, your photos will start to look cloudy or hazy, a lot like a fingerprint smudge on the lens. And this will increase gradually as the issue gets worse.
Thanks for the response. I downloaded ADM and it works.
I can see some really fine scratches on the lens, almost like dots. However, no noticeable haze in the images.
One more issue. Do you also sometimes suffer from keyboard errors. Sometimes, occasionally I'll open a field to type and instead of the keyboard coming up, it's just a black bar. However, this black bar still reads my keyboard inputs. It's like a glitch in the OS.

If the coating is starting to scratch, it will probably get worse over time until it affects your photos. But no need to worry about it until that happens.

I've heard a couple complaints like that, but I haven't experienced it myself.
Is the phone stock or modded (unlocked bootloader, root, etc.)?
Yeah, I'm completely stock. Native keyboard, no launchers.
It's happened like 5 times in ten days. Usually sorts itself out by exiting whatever application I'm using.

See the black bar problem. But it still reads inputs. Why did it keep doing this?

For a stock phone, you can try a factory reset or to update by OTA (if one is available). Not much else you can do on stock.
You can search around to see if this a common issue on your OS software version (and if there are any other possible fixes). But I don't think so. I've seen maybe one other person mention it, but it doesn't seem like a common problem.
