okay so i was playing football and suddenly it started to rain heavily (very) but i managed to get into shade (small) which was also dripping with water so the phone was not 100% safe there either. anyways i wrapped the phone with my hands and put the phone in plastic bag. when i got home and removed the back cover of the phone it was filled with water(somewhat) . anwyays, i put the phone in a bag of rice after that for past 24 hours. should i turn it on now?
should i try to dissamble the phone to dry it. ?
my touchscreen is a bit off the case. .. its not fixed. there are some opening on sides. so as long as mother board is dry? can i still turn on the phone (just to see if the phones working)
you better take it to a service ,that's my advice
From my experience you should not charge it, turn it on try to dry it with hairdryer or something of that kind, put it in uncooked rice for a few hours and pray...

it seems that my brother tried to turn on the phone before i put it in rice. i went to repair the phone the phone only to hear that the motherboard is shot-ed . he said he "could" make it work. so is there any possible way he could repair it . can we repair the short circuited motherboard?
I doubt motherboard can be repaired most of the time they simply change it, Even if they repair it it would cost you too much, better sell it off(if possible) n buy another one

alrighty, i gave it to a local phone repairer and he apparently repaired the mobo. he said he changed power ic mic and network related thing and now the phone is working just fine. it costed me like 1800 rs (30 $) . i still havent paid him (hes a known person and i said ill pay him tomorrow) .
but theres something bugging me, what if the phone's motherboard wasnt damaged at all in the first place? i mean, after the rain incidient i didnt try to switch on the phone (98% sure... maybe my bro tried,...dunno. but anyways, the phones battery was dead). i immediately kept in rice for like 1 and half days. and even when giving him the phone i didnt try to turn on the phone (foolish of me) . so the question is, can he really replace (repair) those parts i mentioned? can the motherboard be really repaired after being shotted by water? or am i just being fooled ?

Well my opinion : repairing a mobo.....he could have asked hell of a lot more then 30,- ! Its not that much to fall over about. If he replaced it or not.
I fell over in a muddy puddle whilst camping, and my wife checked my shorts pockets before washing them under a field tap. Sadly she checked the same pocket twice, so didn't find my brand new One X
After letting the water drip out (!) I took the mini sim out, then left in it the warm, in rice, and with a couple of gel moisture absorber packets. I'd heard not to use a hairdryer as this might force water deeper in. After 4 days it turned on when I tried, but very black screen. This cleared almost completely over a few weeks, months to almost go, and now a year later down to a small brown streak
So I think that if you are sure it's completely dried out, it is ok to turn on, not if it might still be wet

Last night i was in the bathroom, and accidently dropped it in the sink, It wasnt submurged under water or anything, it had a light splash of water near the charger port, the sticker under the battery is slightly pink. The phone works fine. No problems. however when i plug it into my computer, i cant turn on usb storage, but it will charge, also I tried winamp yesterday and it synced my phone and copied all music to the phone.. What should I do? I could swap the phone out but the problem is it's rooted, and if they find water damage they said theyd charge me 200 bucks. What should I do? Could i call HTC? :/

For future reference if you ever drop your phone into any kind of water....immediately take the battery out...leave the phone apart (back case, battery, phone) and then stick them all into a big bowl of uncooked rice and let them sit in there for a couple of days.

I did leave it in rice for a about 6 hours, i noticed the battery seems to have a water damage sticker on the bottom of the battery and it didnt even hit that. the water damage seems to be minimal

Well if you can live with your phone the way it is then just do that. If not then pay the deductible and get yourself a new phone.
I may consider just keeping it, I mean i could just use dropbox to sync. Maybe it will come back to life.
EDIT: WOW. my usb is connected!! wow. dude. wow. sounds like a troll post but it's working again. this is insane. i just blew in it with canned air and it started to work.
You probably blew some water droplets off of where they were shorting a circut perhaps dried it id still be careful

I'd leave it in the rice with the battery out for as long as possible. It may take a few days for the water to dry out.
I went swimming with my phone once, for a good 5 minutes before I realized what happened. There was a nasty buzzing noise (I though it was an insect).
I dropped it in rice, stuck some packets of dessicant in it (the packets they put in shoe boxes and electronics) and it functioned for a month. It then died completely and I had to toss it. This was the Nokia 5300 from back in the day.
My wife dropped my galaxy nexus in a bucket of water. So I pulled out the battery and they both sat for about 20 minutes separate, then I powered it back and it gives the usual screen of "I just got dunked!" and isn't working correctly.
Apparently, Verizon never added insurance to my phone when I signed up for it when I got it.
Thoughts on what to do???
How long ago did you buy the phone because you still might have time to buy a warrenty.. put your phone in rice for 24 hours.. not sure if it should be cooked or not so Google it... I'm sorry for your lose and everyone here at XDA forums wish you the best of luck.. the galaxy nexus is a fighter!
Remove the battery and store the phone in a container with lots of rice for a few days. It is a long shot but I have saved a few devices in this manner. The damage may already be done since you tried to power it on.
Something else to do is rinse the phone thoroughly with distilled water before putting it in the rice. This may get rid of any residue left over from the water in the bucket.
Claim on the house insurance? Ive never made a claim before but thats what its there for.
You should put your phone in a convection oven at 50-60 degrees centigrade for like 24 hours.
The battery should NOT be put in there!
One should never try to power it back on after 20 minutes.
This won't help you now, but as others said, after dropping into water DO NOT turn the phone on without letting it sit in a bag of rice for two days MINIMUM>

It's not that difficult to get a new one. You can usually find suitable replacements in bars or on dating sites, especially if you've got money. Look for a model that doesn't drop your calls (in water).

Wait a few days.. and probably file a lost claim though you might have to file a police report for that.

As far as the unlocked rooted thing, i don't think it matters at this point. If you are getting it replaced anyway, just totally kill it so it doesn't turn on. who's to know.
Seriously, put the phone in a ziplock bag with UNCOOKED rice for at LEAST 24 hours.
It will absorb all of the moisture out of the phone. Don't be stupid and try to turn it on or plug it in before 24 hours or you risk frying it.
The battery will most likely be fully depleted also. But take it slow. The phone will also still be a little "wonky" even after a few days.
Be careful with the rice too. I usually fill the bag up half way and lay it on a counter... gently placing the phone on top. Last thing you want is rice dust lodged in your buttons (ie Don't shake the bag)
I've done this a few times. Once in the toilet (before use), my kid threw my phone in the tub while I was showering, and my gf dropped her in a puddle.
All were recovered fully.
You have to watch out for water damage with the stickers unless you have full coverage. Theft and loss are two different things. I don't know if you'd need a police report if you just "lost" it. Maybe you were on a Ski Lift and fumbled it into the woods below. Perhaps since we don't have an official 3-Pin Car Holder, the phone slid and fell out the window. I don't think any of those would require a police report.
The window excuse gives you reason to stress test the screen with your car.
Rice thing worked for my wife once on her env3...second time she had it in the washing machine and it left lines on the screen...so rice didnt work on that occasion...luckily when youre best friends with a verizon store manager they can make your life much easier.
You do know that making a claim on your insurance at this point is basically just petty theft?
Another thing to know is to dunk in rubbing alcohol before you let it dry out. The alcohol will actually displace any water still left in the phone (as much as possible) and then you can put it in rice.
When you place the phone in rice, I wouldn't seal the container unless you live in swampy super humid environment. Sealing it traps moisture and ensures the only place the water can go is the rice. That's not the objective. The goal is to draw moisture out of the phone. It doesn't matter if it goes into the air or the rice.
The alcohol option makes since as it evaporates more quickly. But I'd only do that immediately after it happened like the poster stated.
Lastly, swap it out at any time. They don't care because ultimately it will end up in a he said she said ordeal. They will just end up insuring it any how. I've actually had a repair facility add insurance to my account so they can work on my device. The key is being in that window that you can purchase it.

i once washed my ipod in the washer. it came out, was still on, i turned it off and kept it in rice for 2 days. then it wouldnt power on. i left it in the toaster oven on 165 for a couple of days. still no go and pc doesnt even detect a usb device. after 2 weeks i thought id turn it on.. and it still doesnt. but before i threw it out, i decided to connect it to the usb, and bam! red charging battery. it works perfectly fine now.
Well, apparently my insurance didn't go through yet and my claim didn't work. Took advice from a friend who works at verizon and I hope I can still do the claim again.
My phone is sitting in rice.. hoping it works.
A little late, but I saw an article on life hacker today about a product designed especially for drying wet portable electronics. Fairly reasonable price swell.

I dropped my phone a bucket of water today. Got it up quite quickly and dryed it with compressed air. It turned it self on and off during a period, but now it seems to work fine. But now I have moist behind the camera lens. Any tips for removing moist there?
Leave the phone (Switched off) in a container full of uncooked rice in a warm area. Should do the trick.

Turn the phone off completely from fastboot and put it in a bag of rice, sealed up for 3 days. Do not turn it back on until 3 days have past or you will further damage your phone.

I have the same problem,but worse. I dropped my OneX in a stream of heavy rain water by the road and its been in the water for about 10 minutes while i was searching for it all over. I was glad I found it and in the haste and panic because its just a couple of weeks old,i pressed the power button,to find it working alright,then the signal reception cut off,i unlocked the screen,turned the airplane mode on. I could do all this and then it went off. I took the Sim out,rushed home, immersed it in a bowl of rice. Would that do? Please help

The most important thing is to NOT power it on again, not for atleast 3-5 days, i'd let it be off for 5 days, in a bag of rice standing on an element(the heat stuff you have in every room). If you turn on the phone before it's all dryed, you will probably damage the internal hardware, you know electric stuff doesn't like water that much.

Yes i got that. But i was thinking if going up to the HTC service center would help. Wouldnt they disemble and dry it up? I dont mind being charged but i just want it to work

Well Ive called up the HTC support and they asked me to go to the center where they will diagnose it and tell me whats what.
All i can hope now is that they dont reject for service on my face
The problem esp. with the HOX is that since the battery is sealed in the unit, its not easy to disconnect when needed. So by the time one realises that its been under water, damage might have already been done as the circuits still get a charge from the battery. So like others said, its better to leave it alone in a bowl of rice for a day or so and pray.
Lets hope HTC do the needful and fix your phone...

Exactly. The thing i admired when i bought is what turned to be a disadvantage. The concealed nature of the phone left me worried sick.

Hello! I went to the HTC service center after having the OneX in rice for 36hrs. The guy said they cant open it here and so it has to go to the headquarters of India for service and said he'll get back to me in a week or so. Upon asking he told me that a smiliar water damage issue came up to them and when they sent it to the Headquarters,the Head sent a new phone altogether to the guy. Now I have a bit of hope. Do you think i can?
They might send you a new phone. You will probably need to pay for it.

You were right. HTC called up and told me that the repair cost would be about 400$ and i bought it for 630$.Theyve told me that the battery,touch screen,the motherboard are all gone. Guess its just hard luck :crying:.

One last thing. HTC said that the battery,main board, the lcd,the touchscreen are all gone so all will be replace but at the cost i mentioned before. Do you think its worth going for? Considering it will became as good as a new one..?
400 is steep you might be better selling it as damaged and buying a new one

Thats unfortunate. I remember having a nokia (when color screen was pretty new) go in the washing machine. When is started it up afterward only 1/3 of the screen were visible. In due time function by function returned when the phone dried out and after ~3 days it was back to perfect state

Yes sir,i thought so too,and i contacted HTC and told them im a student who wouldn't be able to afford such a pricey repair and they have actually took it into consideration and the lady told me to wait a couple of days to confirm with her head/country manager for a 50% off on the repair. If that happens,will it be worth it?

My missus dropped her iPhone in a bucket of bleach, so it was found 3 hrs later, had to rinse it with water, strip it down, get a tub of rice and put the parts stripped down into tub, the rice draws all the moisture out of the parts. Put it back together after 48 hours and after 1 week everything on screen was A okay, good as new. Always worth doing this yourself to save Money, and insurance claim rise.

So yesterday me and my friends went near a lake and had a little bit of alcohol,so i fell into the water with the phone in my pocket turned of.
But later when the phone dried,i turned it on and it was all working but the screen brightnes is not adjustable,now can anibody advise me what to do

I suggest you fully dry your phone out put it in a sack of rice for a few days then see what happens.

It's highly unlikely you managed to get it completely dry in 1 day.
Stick it in a bag of rice for 24 hours and hope for the best.

You could try a factory reset, but strange things happen from water damage.
My old Sony Ericsson worked fine, except for the fact (after I dropped it in a pan of gravy) that the gsm aerial only had a weak signal. Everything else was normal..
Could try silica gel, but there could be corrosion (you can't always even see the corrosion) from minerals/deposits in the water, which is causing a short circuit somewhere, causing the problem.
Unfortunately any water damage automatically (to the repair centers at least) means it's BER (beyond economical repair) so if you can't fix it from it drying out (ideally give it at least 3 days or even more in the rice or silica gel) the only option really is to buy a new one, or claim on insurance if you have cover.

THx for the answer,but unfortunately this phone dosent have a warranty,i think im just gonna buy the screen and then im gonna send it to my nearest reapir center,and yes i can see dried up water under the screen.
i know the feeling! my dhd got wet yesterday in the rain argh! even the battery indicator shows no water damage (to that at least) yet the screen is buggered lol. looks like its been smashed in a way. got it in a tub of rice currently.. hoping it might dry out.

the review says its not original. i'd steer clear personally.
So nearly a week ago, i was travelling by bike. It started raining ridiculously, i had kept my phone in a plastic bag in the pocket of my windcheater. Somehow, the water entered my phone, i travelled nearly 20 kms without realising the water had already done the damage to my phone.
I reached home and saw what had happened, immediately took out my battery, cleaned my phone with a dry cloth and used hair dryer for about 30 mins. I knew the damage had already been done, coz the phone flashed a red led light indicating water damage.
I opened up the phone, saw the water marker stickers were in a perfect condition no change in color whatsoever, kept my phone in rice for about 12 hours and next morning i plugged in battery to see if it works, no result. PHONE WAS DEAD.
I took it to local repair shop, gave me an estimate, the phone worked for a min and then bam display was flashing on and off. Decided to take it to samsung svc, at first they denied repairing it since GNEX isnt available officially in India. So, gave them my phone and today got an estimate. Costs almost 200$ to replace the mobo! I was shocked! Anyway, my question is should i get my phone repaired? Can i get the parts from outside and get it repaired(not in samsung svc, it took them 4 days just to tell me estimate!)
Any idea which place in mumbai is good for repairing cell phones?

Are they really supposed to do that? red light=water damage? never heard of that. Was it the notification LED?

Did you use hot air? because that might be what have killed it. Plastic and hot hair don't always mix well, just like electronics and water.
Thanks for the reply guys. Tried indraprasth, first they said it will cost Rs.2500, now they are saying will cost more than Rs.5-6k and still no guarantee if it will work! So went ahead and gave it in samsung. Estimate is around 8k! I used hair dryer in normal/mode for about 30 mins and then in hot mode for 5 mins. When i tried to start the phone, the phone just flashed red led notification light and since then never turned on!
I dont know how much time it will take, even i know spending 8k on repairs is not a good idea, but this is my second phone in a year so had no option to buy nexus 4! Well will wait for the next nexus till then.

Hi! Im also facing a similar situation. Water entered in my phone on 9th June, I tried to turn on the phone but it wont start. I removed the battery and kept my phone in a bag of rice for almost 10 days. charged my battery using an external charger but the phone wont turn on
I would like to know what exactly the repair guy told u in indraprasth and which service center did u give ur phone. I don't want my nexus to die. I stay in borivali and any info from ur side will be really helpful.

The guy at indraprasth told me that water had entered the phone internals. Including earpiece,motherboard and display. My mobo worked fine for a sec or two and then the phone wud switch off again. After many tries the phone was dead. Then he said he can repair the phone(p.s smartphones cannot be repaired if mobo is damaged, only replaced) but there's no guarantee it will work. Then i went to samsung, they gave me an estimate of 8k +-1k. I will also get a warranty for a month, strange since this phone wasnt launched in India.
All the best, i would suggest go to authorised svc first and if you think the price is too high, then go to local.

Thanks for your reply. I went to Indraprasth and the guy said my phone is 'dead'. It cannot be repaired and it has to be replaced but he said it's better u don't do anything as its gonna cost u heaven and plus spares are not easily available. So now i have no option left but to go to an authorized service center. I would like to know what exactly the service center guy told you that's not working and needs a replacement and have u received your phone back from the center and is it working properly?
