[Q] HTC Desire keeps going into fastboot & recovery - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okey so I managed to ****ed up my HTC Desire. This happened 1-2 years ago when attempting to factory reset the phone. I can't fully remember what went wrong so i'll just feed you guys as much information as I can.
Model: HTC Desire A8181
BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON
Okey so what I think happened is, that I wen't into Recovery mode, thinking that deleting everything would reset the phone. I believe I did every "delete" thing there is on the recovery page. Such as: "wipe data/factory reset", all the "format boot, system, etc".
When I start the phone, it automaticly goes into hboot/fastboot mode. I've tried clicking everything like factory reset etc. I remember trying other methods, like installing new software, but I can't find what I need.
When plugging the phone into my laptop, it says:
HTC Desire USB Device: This device is disconnected
USB-Mass Storage Device: Ready to use
Android 1.0: No drivers were found
Android Phone: No drivers were found
I can't access the phone's storage thingy. Seems like i've deleted everything.
That's all the information I can find. I'm no expert. So, What can I do to fix this?
I apologize for the poorly written text & lack of information. Will update once I find out more.

Well.. You did delete the system. It has nothing to boot into. Does your recovery still work? If yes, then flash a custom rom. Download a rom, put it on your sd-card, boot in recovery, and install it.

Well you have deleted everything...therefore you dont have any rom which is why it goings into hboot.
Im guessing you have a custom recovery installed because of all the stuff that you were able to format?
If yes, all you need to do is download a rom, move it to your phone and flash it
Id recommend MildWilds redux rom. Download it on your pc.
When its done go into the recovery on your phone, plug it into your computer and then go to the mount/storage section. Look for an option to mount sdcard or usb storage (or something similar). It should then show up in windows explorer on your pc. Copy the rom over to the phone.
Now on the phone choose: wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, advanced > wipe dalvik. Then go to install zip from sd card and choose the rom that you copied over.

Thanks i'll give it a try & update if it works or not.

Okey here's a problem.
I go into the device n storage place. The only thing regarding android/htc desire is "Android Phone".
It says: Model: Android Phone
Category: Storage Device
Status: Requires "debugging"
I do the "debugging" and it says, "Missing drivers". I did an automatic search for drivers but couldn't find any.
What to do? :/
Edit: Basicly, I can't access the storage device.

Are you sure you did not have to downgrade your phone to a previous HTC release. You should start with a HTC rom version previous to the OTA 1.72 release from december 2010.

i didnt downgrade to anything.
Its ok i think i messed up my phone all the way now...it boots directly into clockmod now...there isnt even a htc screen.
and the led on top is blinking.
Dude let me try and help you.
1) download a known good rom like one thats close to stock
2) go into cwm > mounts and storage > mount sdcard usb > and copy the *.zip to the root of your sdcard
3) unmount by going back to main cwm menu
4) now wipe data/factory reset
5) now wipe cache
6) go into mounts and storage and do format system, then go back to main menu
7) now go to advanced and clear dalvik cache, then go back to main menu
8) now install zip from sdcard and choose the downloaded *.zip which you placed into the root of your sdcard and start flashing.
9) after flash finished, reboot your device and wait for at least 10 minutes
This way I fixed my gf's desire z

You didnt mess up all the way until your phone doesnt turn on at all. Dont give up you are just a few steps from a fixed phone. I would take a moment to make sure you have adb setup on your pc correctly. Maybe even try connecting someone elses g2 if you can. Phones are a lot easier to fix after you spend a littlle time with adb.

Yes they are...I keep platform tools folder on my desktop with as much tinkering as a I do its just easy to type cd desktop\platform-tools

Smashed Screen Need Advice on Backing up!

Greets all,
I tried to do a search but its coming up that the search service is unavailable.
Last night my screen got smashed, so I called HTC to have them fix it for 220, but the big problem here is I am trying to back everything up, and being that when I connect the phone to the computer its automatically on charge only, so the HTC manager wont pick it up. obviously in charge mode the computer wont pick up the "external storage" so I can copy everything off.
I've tried to use Droid Explorer, but that doesnt copy folders and only copies files, and thats a long process. I even tried to use the screencast on droid explorer to see if I can get into the phone to change to either usb or htc sync, but the screencast wont respond.
So I wanted to know if anyone knows the best way to backup the phone? Remember Screen smashed and unresponsive, and HTC told me they will factory reset the phone (Even though its rooted, and bootloader is unlocked).
Thanks.
I see you are on a custom from your signature.
But assuming u totally don't see anything from it, you just have to go to "USB storage" from the recovery menu by "feeling".
What i mean is:
- power off the phone
- hold vol down+power button for 5 s
use a video for the timing like (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxJf8xIVVC0)
Then navigate with the volume buttons and power button
So 1 time volume down
power button
wait for reboot in CWM
5 times volume down key
etc.
then connect your phone and it should load as an usb storage.
good luck!!
xSilv85,
Tried your suggestion but no luck, will not mount, the CWR I am using is: 5.8.3.1, everytime I go to mount and storage and try to mount usb storage (which I think is the second to last one) I get the "Unable to open ums lunfile" error. and mounting the sdcard rears no results as well. I have tried even installing the htc 64 bit drivers with no luck.
I just did a backup of the phone, and that completed, which is a good thing, but yet no way of pulling all the data of the sdcard

[Q] HTC ONE -- can't access from computer

Hi all, I ****ed up and didn't make a backup.
I wiped the phone clean from bootloader recovery, but then realized I had forgotten to move the new gapps and cm rom to my phone.
When I plug it in, it is recognized by my computer, but the HTC MTP Device fails to work.
I can't see the phone, and therefore can't put anything on it to flash. If I mount the phone via the bootloader, it pops up in Windows and wants to be formatted.
I have been looking around and trying different things for the past couple hours, and figured it was time to ask someone who might know..
Any ideas?

I don't understand why I can't mount or access the phone. Do I not have the right drivers installed?
Is there any way to get around this and put the files on my phone so I can install any old ROM so I can boot it up again??
You need to update the drivers on your PC, there's a few threads on how to do it. You should still be able to use adb push to add files, though.
Drivers are fine ! Go in recovery and mount the sdcard as a usb mass storage device ! In the title you speak of a HTC one......so is it a ONE or a ONE X ?
Thanks for replying!
It is an HTC One X. Should I just install the Android SDK bundle? Or are there other drivers?
Android sdk bundle is good. But you have MYHTC so that's correct. You need to go into the recovery and mount the sdcard as a usb storage device, it will show the drive in windows and then you can copy a rom onto it.

Hi, so I installed the newest HTC driver (4.2) and all the SDK bundles. When I plug the phone it, it still won't recognize the HTC MTP Device. When I mount from the bootloader, it doesn't let me mount the sdcard (only the system data and cache), and Windows still shows a drive that needs to be formatted.
Do you think it's still a Windows driver I'm missing? If I go Terminal Command on phone it says
E: Unable to mount '/sdcard'
E: Unable to mount storage.
What's the option called you tap inside recovery. And what recovery are you using ?
If it's CWM you go to mounts and storage and tap the last option in that list.....then wait till it pops up on the pc
I'm using TWRP v 2.4.2.0 and I couldn't check the box for mount sdcard.
ADB push worked!
But the ROM failed. Is there anything else I'm missing?
It still says that E: can't mount.

Firstly thank you so much for taking time to help a lost stranger out!
What I did was reformat the J: drive that popped up on Windows, then I was able to put both the CM10.2 and GAPPS on the /sdcard/ (it would then mount)
I could then install both of them successfully, but I don't have a boot.img because my kernel is wiped. Will that file work as a boot.img?

Or how do I try your recover? Should I push it with adb? If so, to where?
I found two other boot.img files on the webs (boot.img and cm10.img), but I don't know how to get the phone to actually boot off them
The boot.img has to be flashed via Fastboot in the bootloader. So if you installed CM correctly via the recovery then flash the boot.img from the CM.zip ....
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
And a kernel can't be wiped via the recovery by the way. You can only delete/overwrite it via Fastboot commands

I think it flashed correctly, now I am just waiting for the phone to boot up. It's been going for about 25 minutes though. Should it be that long?
Nope not good.......make a full wipe in recovery before installing the rom.
Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced-wipe dalvik cache
Mounts and storage-format cache,data,system
Then install CM and gapps then reboot because you already flashed its boot.img

Stuck yet again.
I relocked the phone to flash new firmware, but I have CID 1111111, so I can't find anything to unlock the bootloader again.
Double sauced. Ahhhhhh
Unlock the bootloader by flashing the unlock_Code.bin file wich you got the first time when it's unlocked.
Fastboot flash token unlock_code.bin
But you really should continue this in the right forum. Flashing stuff from here may brick the phone !

[Q] How to pull data when in Clockworkmod Recovery Mode?

Hi guys
I am running Cyanogenmod 10.2.1 on a Galaxy Nexus GSM. I installed that last year with the easy to use installer.
2 days ago I clicked update on that M3 Snapshot. Since then, the phone is not booting anymore and hanging on the blue loading screen with the cyanogenmod face and the circle around it.
I can boot to Odin and Clockworkmod Recovery.
I installed the Android SDK and the USB adb drivers and it shows the device under "devices" without trouble but not as a storage device so i cant pull data via the windows explorer. I am on Windows 7 Ultimate.
When in CWM Recovery and trying adb pull it says device not authorized. Unfortunetly i switched off usb debugging right before i installed that update.
My question>
I have to save the photos from the internal sd card before i can just wipe everything and reset it to factory setting. How can i do that?
Any chance to get around the "device unauthorized" msg ? Via adb devices i can see the device in the list.
I searched around a lot and kind of out of options now :/
if it is any help. i was just able to flash the clockworkmod to 6.0.4.7 via heimdall in odin mode but i still cannot read data from the phone..
if its possible to write on the phone it should be possible to read from it?

Just use adb to push a ROM to internal storage. Or adb sideload.
I can't understand why folks keep skipping the step of making a nandroid before flashing a ROM. This just takes a couple minutes and should be considered mandatory before doing any mods (and now you see why). Either that, or have a known good ROM on the internal storage. I never go without one or the other.

still doesn't do anything
Do you have adb/fastboot setup (if you don't, you should)? If so, any response when you type in command prompt: adb devices
My guess is that you might have a basic USB connectivity problem (usually on the PC side) on top of your phone issues.
Uninstall HTC Sync and all HTC drivers.
Re-Install HTC Sync and/or drivers.
Try connecting again.
If it doesn't work, uninstall HTC Sync and HTC drivers again. Connect the phone, when the PC prompts you to automatically install HTC Sync, don't do it. Open Device Manager and select the option to manually select drivers. Then pick the generic Android MTP device.
Also, if you have a MicroSD card, and a USB card reader, you can just use it to put a ROM on the SD card. Then insert card into your phone. Boot recovery, and flash the ROM.
i just did adb sideload , and flashed the viper rom , everything works perfectly now.....also originally my phone wasn't even bricked , i just didn't give it enough time to load the first boot..... so i went back to the revolution mod....everything works except wifi....

Plus it's always a good idea to save a nandroid of the stock ROM that of course you made before you flashed anything besides a recovery and superuser.

You need to update firmware, hence the extremely long boot time and broken WiFi.

Well what version of Viper do you have now?
If it's 3.0 You'll need the 3.x firmware (Android 4.4.4)
If it's 2.5.0 you'll need the 2.x firmware (Android 4.4.3)
Giving us your hboot version to show that you're possibly still on 1.x doesn't mean anything. It just confirms that you'd need to perhaps update your firmware.
What's your CID?
Give some more details and you'll have some answers sooner. Some of the guys on here might be beyond brilliant but none of them are "seers/psychics" that can foresee all these required information.
