If u have gained s-off and root its a breeze ....download a recovery manager ...clockwork mod...twrp...or 4ext (my fav) .. Make a backup of your original ROM ..wipe all partitions ....or if upgrading a ROM u can some times get away with not wiping (dirty flash)....then install the rom zip file THEN Gapps..THEN all the other goodies u find...its cake ..u can also access recovery by holding power + vol down while the phone is off....PS 4ext has a free version @ 4ext.net

What you want to do is flash a custom recovery with fastboot.
as chilly said, download the .img for your choice of recovery
flash it with fastboot flash recovery <name-of-recovery>.img
Once that is done, put the rom and gapps zips on your sdcard. Boot into recovery
and flash both in succession. ROMs don't get flashed through fastboot. kernels, radios, recoveries, and RUUs do.
Also if u used revolutionary s-off u already have a custom recovery ...but its wiiiiiicked outdated I'm assuming ...but it'll do flash a rom then update it
To get to it do the power vol down technique I mentioned

You are right on chilly, thanks. I was missing the recovery manager. My desktop firewall crashed Revolutionary after s-off as it was attempting to download clockwork. I disabled my fw, ran it again and it downloaded and installed clockwork mod for me.
I followed your directions and recovered 10.1 using clockwork then install gapps.
It now is running CM10.1 with gapps 4.2.2. It still has clockwork mod, which seemed to work fine. Any reason to change the recovery manager at this point?
Better support and its touch recovery no more click click up down stuff...also new features and better ext4 support

Hello,
Can I ask a related but new question on this build?
I like the Inc 2 and recently decided to go back to it. I bought a phone with this build (10.1-20130701) and was really happy to get a JB version of Android. One of the changes I made was to disable the soft keys (edit to build.prop) in order to get the screen space. But, I would like the lights for the 'hard keys' to tie to the timeout of the screen. Right now the lights go off in about 10 seconds or so. I cannot find a setting or a property in builld.prop for this. Maybe I missed it. Is there a way to do this?
Many thanks,
Michael
PS: Other things I did in case anyone is interested: Removed the Google Search Bar. Requires changing a homescreen setting. Also, to get more screen space.

It puts stock recovery just incase you loaded an invalid recovery img or something not compatible, therefore when u attempt to access recovery it wouldn't load. Mainly put this up because I was going in circles trying to with stuff posted on the irc. For example, I flashed insecure, and it just froze at the htc loading screen.

Yup, just the original recovery program that came with the phone. In case you want it for any reason, or want to put the phone back to stock stock everything stock... or in case you need a recovery which is confirmed working.
It will only allow you to flash signed updates.

I havent tried it but.. You would have to revert to stock, using the other guide. Then flash this to remove the clockworkmod recovery.
That should be all stock, if im not mistaken.

Odd. My phone did not come with a recovery. I got it the Oct 3rd from RadioShack, so maybe that's why. When I tried to enter recovery from fastboot, it would give me a screen with a warning triangle and needed a battery pull. That's why I was wondering what in the world the stock recovery was.

NO, your phone most certainly had a stock recovery, you just didn't press the Volume Up and Power button at the same time when your phone got to the "warning triangle". If you'd done that you would have gotten to the recovery menu.

Going by that error, I'm gonna assume your still s-on. You might want to start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842495
Read the whole thing, but at least have the answers to the 2nd post before posting up you question.
Also, nothing against paul or any maker of the apps that do stuff like this, but really all this rooting/rom flashing stuff needs to be done the manual way. Apps mess up sometimes and could put you in a bad spot. At least if you did it manually you would know what you did wrong, and hopefully catch it before you reboot.
You might also want to post in the visionary thread as maybe these guys know of a fix for whatever the app is doing.
I had a Middle-East ROM in my WFS, then I unlocked bootloader from HTCDev.com, success. Then I rooted using One Root for WFS 1.5 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678421), Success! The rooting process was invloved with CWM, applied a Root.zip from SD. But I never installed a custom recovery.
Then I removed some stock apps, I got screwd and bootlooped. Then I downloaded a RUU HTC EU 2.26 Stock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688508) and extracted contents, then flashed the Boot.img and System.img using Flashy Tool GUI (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467356). The process was, VOL_DOWN + PWR to stock recovery -> Fastboot_USB -> then everything from Flashy_GUI.
Everything went fine, working as usual. But in Settings -> SD & phone storage under Internal storage there is an new item Optimize storage (defragment) if it clicked the phone will confirm for defragmentation, after pressing YES a progress circle (not %) comes showing Power off then it automatically reboot to ClockWorkMod Recovery!!!!!!!! This CWM is fully functional even can backup ROM image, format partitions ect.... But if I used VOL_DOWN + PWR it will comes to Fastboot. How this happen? How the two recovery exits same time?? when I get the next FOTA from HTC, will this cause any errors??
This is normal as far as I know. Its the same on mine anyway lol
The voldown + power goes to bootloader, not recovery. Correct me if I'm wrong

then what is the currect way to enter into recovery mode in WFS?
I was rooted only once, but after bootlooped I flashed the unrooted stock image
In bootloader mode highlight recovery using volume up/down and press the power button.

So at every reboot, I have to open my computer and flash the kernel via fastboot. Any help is appreciated thanks!:good:

Viper X is not based on Jelly bean, are you sure you are using the correct boot.img file ? What you are experiencing shouldn't happen. When you flash the boot.img, does it correctly go through and see something the following at the comand prompt ?

Bump,
It still happens even after i fastboot erase cache, every reboot. im on slim bean
Guys I'm in deep trouble! This is what happens when you don't rally know what you're doing!
I tried to revert back to stock, first by putting stock recovery on it via fastboot which said it was successful, so when I go into recovery I've still got CWM on it, so I tried to go into usb mounts and storage because I'd put my nand back up on it to restore that but it just said error so couldn't access it. So I ended up going down the ruu route and ran 1.26.206.2 but I noticed when the ruu started to run and it said update image from 1.29.206.11 to 1.26.206.2 I guess you can't go backwards because it said something like bootloader mismatch. I've downloaded the 1.29 ruu but it's in zip format, how do I install it? Plus after running the ruu I cant install my nand backup recovery or boot image. Believe me I did do a lot of reading but I guess I'm just thick I just can't seem to grasp it. All I've got now is the bootloader so I don't know whether the phone is charging or not. The battery was probably around 80% when I started out over an hour ago and I have tried to sort it myself but this is out of my league. Can someone please help or point me in the right direction, I'm desperate.
The 1.29 RUU is not available yet, and the zip file you tried to download was apparently an OTA file, which you can't use.
Give me the following info to proceed:
-CID using fastboot command
"fastboot oem readcid"
-Main version with following command
"fastboot getvar version-main"

First of all thank you for replying.
my cid is o2-001
the main version is 1.29.206.11
First of all you should have access to custom recovery. If you can't access, try to reflash cwm and make sure it's v5.8.4.0.
Download the appropriate stock nandroid backup from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975140
Save boot.img from it for further use.
Transfer backup to phone and restore as usual.
Flash boot.img.
Then you can flash stock recovery and relock bootloader if you want.
Edit: you sure your bootloader is still unlocked?

Your bootloader is locked. Unlock it again.
If you have the unlock_code.bin in your email, you can use it, otherwise you have to go through htcdev unlock process entirely.

Try powering phone off and on again, confirm that it is in fastboot mode, also check if "fastboot devices" returns anything.
Do you have the unlock code in fastboot folder on your pc?
The exact command is: "fastboot flash unlocktoken unlock_code.bin"

Okay I've successfully unlocked again and its rebooted to a screen with the word android on the screen, now do I leave that to see what happens or do I need to go into bootloader and follow the instructions you gave before regarding flashing cwm etc?
Go ahead and proceed with the instructions I gave earlier.

I've done that but still get the same error, I created a folder named clockwork mod and then a subfolder named backup and put the backup in there?
Also, the backup should be unzipped, so /clockworkmod/backup/backupname/
The backupname folder should contain bunch of files: boot.img, a couple of .tar files etc. It's hard to explain.
Anyways, the downloaded backup is guaranteed to work. Just extract the .zip file's contents to the folder /clockworkmod/backup/backupname/

S-off your device with revolutionary first before you flash the radio, since you have to be S-off to flash radios.

I have been tring to do that. They say Revolutionary should be self explainitory however. I get to this step
Zerging Root.. This might take a minute or so.. Root Acquired!
Sending in Caroline...
Cleaning up...
Rebooting to fastboot...
When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back!
Waiting for Fastboot...
Then nothing. My phone reboots into fastboot. I left the tool running in the backround for an hour with it stuck there and nothing else happens. I never get S-Off.
Since I have tried this several times over the last few days I even tried to use fastboot during one of the revolutionary processes just to see if fastboot is working and it is. Just the tool never gets me to S-Off. dont know what to do

Do you have fastboot and adb drivers drivers installed? Since it's just waiting on your fastboot

Yes. Part of the guide requires you to use both ADB and Fastboot. both of them work outside of Revolutionary
also on a side note I tried to do it again tonight as my 1 hour trek. I checked device manager to make sure there were no driver malfunctions recorded by wndows before using revolutionary and while using it.
I was thinking that you should push superuser then try revolution

I tried that already. Even with dev unlock to try the other version of the guide.
I still get the error with revolutionary.

Seems I am stumped everyone on the issue. Think I have givin up on tring to root this type of phone
So you have super user installed which means you've obtained root. You're s-on and are trying for s-off so you can flash a different radio? Is that where you are at?

A lot of people have a problem with the flash a new radio part. If you are following the guide I'd just on to the next step which I believe is revolution. As long as you obtained the correct key from the website for your phone that should unlock your phone to s-off and it'll day revolution at the top of the hboot screen instead of locked. From there If you aren't having any problems don't even bother with a new radio. Just pick a custom ROM, follow the instructions and flash it.

So originally your problem was that you couldn't flash a radio. Now your problem is that you can't get revolution to run. Quick question the pg32img file is it still on your SD card with that same name?

During the guide process I could never flash the radio. I tried flashing it from Custom recovery with the Superuser option when having dev unlock. I tried flashing from Fastboot as its asked. Ive tried renaming the file from PG32IMG, I also tried downloading alternate radios to be where I need to be. I also tried modifying the original flash rom folder so it would not replace the correct radio I needed. Non of the above options work as it fails with 12 connection error. I also tried all those options on 3 different sd cards just to be sure my sd card didnt do down in flames. Without flashing the radio I only got 1 boot into the OS to try and run revolution Tool. It would run reboot into fastboot Fastboot is responsive however after letting it sit for over an hour per attempt it never rebooted to give me the full S-off which also means no custom roms cause I cant flash radios without being S-off to start with. Forgot to add when I renamed it to the PG32IMG and got into boot mode. it would read the file and never give me the option to install update. it would skip over it like it wasnt there.
You did disable fast boot correct?

Also you dont need to be able to flash a radio for a custom ROM. As long as you have root you can still flash custom ROMs using the s-on installation method and HTC dev unlocked which you stated that you had done.

Yes, part of the guide tells you to go in and turn off fastboot before start revolutionary tool. Also the custom mod I want to use for it would require me to flash firmware and custom radio for ICS. Neither of which I can do with s-on. And is the reason I am tring to get s-off with her phone
as far as I know you can just go htc dev unlocked, with root. download the custom rom that you want, flash it in recovery, pull the boot img and rename it to pg32img.zip put that on the sd card in the main area not in a folder. go into the boot loader. it'll grab the boot image file named pg32img.zip and install it. then change the file name, boot phone and profit.

Close, but you can't just rename an image to a zip like that, in order to go the PG32IMG route you'd need to create a zip with the correct file structure and put the boot.img in that. Instead of trying to figure that out, just extract the boot.img, plug it into your PC, boot into the bootloader and run "fastboot flash boot boot.img" to flash the kernel.

thanks prototype for clearifing my instructions. I just took it for granted that he would put the boot img file into a zip file and I'm not good at all with the commands. I can follow someone else's instructions with them but I won't know what the commands actually do.
