[Q] Infamous Google Edition usb question - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

It took me a while, but I realized that my phone isn't detected properly when I plug into my computer on this rom. Because of this, I also cannot reverse tether, which is quite a deal breaker because I only have H+ or lower in my apartment and there is no wifi here. I read this particular comment in the thread:
"Search for USB Mass Storage Enabler in the Play Store. This will at least allow your external SD card to show up with out any changes. I believe they are working on fixing MTP."
I'd like to try this, but I restored back to Jedi rom and don't have time to reflash right now. Can someone please test it and tell me if you can reverse tether using that app on the Google Edition rom? Thanks

If you read the description of that app that has been mentioned to you, you wouldn't question. You can't see your external or internal drive is because of the Fast Charge option built in the Kernel. James is working on a way around. That app was mentioned for the people who wanted to transfer items back and forth between their phone and computer not for tethering.

Flash KT kernel, i believe that fixes it...if not send me a message will send you the other kernel just dont have link to it right now.

Yeah I did read the description and now that I look back at my question I'm not sure what I was thinking. Guess that's what you get right after waking up lol. I didn't know he had fast charge built into the Kernel though. Thanks for the reply.

S3 suddenly stopped being able to connect to computers

Hi there,
Not sure if anybody else has experienced this. Suddenly my S3 stopped being able to be recognized as a device by any computer. It will charge when plugged into USB. I have checked and fast charge isn't turned on. I have uninstalled the drivers from all my computers, I've tried this on a mac and a PC.
I'm on Task's AOKP Rom. But I have tried other Roms and the problem still persists. So I'm thinking it's a problem with my S3. Right now it's very annoying in that I have to always pop out my SD card to transfer files to my phone.

Did you check the oil?
Edit: I'm joking haha. But you might want to try another cable. It's almost always the cable.
The fact that you changed ROMs makes this less likely, but maybe you have a kernel that has Fast Charge on?

Probably not. Go to settings - USB Connection and check MTP. It works better than the other one.

Strange, I remember seeing that option on the stock TW rom, but I can't seem to find it in Task's AOKP rom, I noticed you're on AOKP too, would you mind giving a bit more detail on where that option is?
I know this isn't the perfect solution, but if you ever get yourself into a situation where the wire won't work and you really need to transfer files and you're on reliable wifi give AirDroid a try. Free app, that allows you to transfer files from a web browser. Saved me many many times. Sorry I can't help with the original issue!

I had the same problem with my stock/rooted ATT s3. Tried a multitude of cables and settings, but what finally worked was a bit of advice from another site. Power the phone off, pull the SD card, and try again. For me this worked. I do not have a good explanation why, but it ended a good bit of frustration.
Good luck to you.
Tried this and other -- nothing works

I've been having the same trouble, and tried this and other "fixes" (like in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2049834) but nothing seems to work.
My situation is perhaps a little different, but this is what I know:
New Rogers SGS3 (I747M) - never rooted, or anything fancy
Plugged it into Kies the first time, and told me there was a Jelly Bean update
Did the update.
Now no computer will detect it - 2 PCs and a MAC.
I've installed and uninstalled drivers off and on for weeks
Tried Odin mode and Odin on 2 PCs
Doesn't even show up in the Windows Device list.
ADB doesn't see it (I assume because the driver doesn't see it)
Nada.
I only have one cable - the one that came with it.
People often talk of making sure it's in MTP mode, but I have no USB settings in my "settings" (JB is different?) though I think I can set it through the PhoneUtil suggested in the link above.
Created an account here (and watched the Noob video!) just to ask this question. All I can think of is that I must have broken something on the phone. Does anyone have any more suggestions or should I just take the phone back to Rogers and say it's broken?
Thanks a bunch!
Ian
Uninstall Kies
Uninstall Drivers
Reboot
Hook up the phone and let Windows Update get whatever drivers it can. It won't get them all
Unhook phone
Install the I747 drivers
Do NOT install Kies
Hook da fone back up
Still nothing

First and foremost - thanks.
But nothing happens. Uninstalled everything AND used the registry editor to get rid of everything "Samsung" and "Kies". I've now noticed, that I don't even get the windows "da-dump" when you plug a USB device in.
It seems there are no SGH-I747M specific drivers (are there?), just the "Samsung USB driver for mobile phones". Is that right?
So, I'm still stuck. The thing charges, but NOTHING else.
Any more ideas?

Thanks. The server you pointed to seems to be down though so I got them from canman.konnekerville.com/ d2att/Rooting/ATT_I747_GSIII_Samsung_USB_Driver_v1_4_6_0.exe
No change when I plug the phone in.
In the mean time, I tried looking at the connectors on the cable and in the phone and tried cleaning them up. Still nothing.
I think it's gonna have to go back to Rogers....

WIFI tether issues with custom roms

Hello Guys,
I am having WIFI Tether issues with any custom AOSP or AOKP rom. Installing a touchwiz related rom somehow resolves the tethering issues.
I've trying all the usual steps before installing a custom rom including wiping everything, factory reset and all that good stuff. But the native tether wont work on these roms. I tried the wifi tether apps in the app store but no success there.
However, what really gets to my nerves is that my daily driver is 4.1.2 liquid smooth rc7 version of the rom which i assume is based on aosp does allow wifi tether but only through the app in the app store. The native app continues to fail.
Someone once told me to install the wifi driver for the phone. Is that possible? If so how? By the way i am running a rogers s3 which is the at&t equivalent in US.
Also, just so you guys know, my other devices do pick up the wireless set up by my phone's tether, but it wont connect to it. password or not, it takes forever to connect and eventually fails.
Any advice?

If you carrier is Rogers, you need to make some mods to tether 4G (H+, 3G will work w/o mods). There's a post about it somewhere in Task's AOKP thread, which I believe a search should find it. Google can also help.
Same issue here, Rogers LTE tethering didn't work and tried to google and find the mods as posted.
couldn't find the mods.
Please advise.

It's dependent of the device receiving it. If it's too old or it's drivers are too old it won't get the speed it should. Also tethering shares the connection, therefor, you won't get full speed on the receiving device.
Could be so many things actually that's it's hard to troubleshoot.
Thanks for the quick reply,

Your S3 doesn't really matter here as much as the device receiving the connection.

[Q] External SD Card Reader

Well, hang me if I'm wrong, but I haven't been able to find an existing, relevant thread;
I have a 32x24mm class 4 SD card that, obviously, won't fit in my Arc. I'd like to be able to connect and use it on the device nonetheless, so I've hooked up a SD reader with USB, to a female USB/male micro USB cable, which then plugs into my phone's micro USB port. All goes well and the SD reader's light goes on, indicating it is functioning.
But for the life of me, I can't seem to find out how to actually access it from the phone. There's no relevant notification on the task bar, nor is there a directory I can access it through. Every thread I come across about an 'external SD card' invariably ends up being about the micro SD -inside- the phone, so that's no help.
Updated to the latest version earlier today, and have jiggled every cable. Every. Single. Cable.
Is it even possible to use an external SD card reader with the phone? I would be much obliged if someone could tell me what to jiggle.
Im pretty sure you need to install a kernel that has USB OTG supported.

What ROM/Kernel combination are you using?
And if I am not mistaken, only some file explorer apps support USB OTG. Unfortunately, I cannot remember any at the moment.

Yeah, that seems to be it, on further investigation. I assumed the arc supported OTG out of the box, as it were. Most, if not all other phones seem to do, so that's probably it. I'm in the middle of aquiring an appropriate kernel and such, and I'll pop back in once it's done and tell y'all if it works.
Thanks.

I did this once, I had all my music on a usb memory stick and plugged in into my phone which then plugged into my car audio.
This was a while ago though but I do remember my phone getting distubingly hot!
I also think i remember reading that prolonged use of this can cause damage, ill have a look now.

It's fussy, that's for sure. The particular driver you are using could make a difference. I don't use MTP much because it's more trouble than it's worth, but the drivers in my signature were working alright, the first link.
I just use FTP now (FTPDroidPro+FileZilla). Never any problems. The only time I would want MTP is for copying several GB of data. But since I back up often (and upload pictures to Dropbox), this situation rarely happens.

FTPDroidPro is the FTP server that sits on the phone. Do not remember if there is a free version, but probably, since, well.... Pro. FileZilla is the client and I think it's open source. Either way, it's free.
My router is terrible, and I can still transfer 4MB/s. With a nice router, I'm sure it's faster than USB 2.0. FTPDroidPro also has support for root access. That is incredibly useful.

The only thing I can think of is that this is either a 4.2.2 issue or related to Vanilla Rootbox exclusively. Just tried your driver and still the same issue. Guess I have no other choice is to try your app combo and see what happens. This is most frustrating, as my music and pictures are stuck on my old sgs3 and would rather not live without them
In case there isn't a free version of Aerowinders, this is what I use, and it does have a free counterpart if you just want to try it our way.

If you need any help setting up, let me know.
There's probably nothing wrong with your phone or the computer. I've had tons of issues, too. One more thing you could try would be to make sure those drivers are fully uninstalled (through device manager also), and install the old 1.4.6.0 ones. These old ones probably won't work with your LTE version, though. Just another thought. I personally think FTPing is the better solution. It's faster than digging out the cable, for me.

Never had an issue with MTP until today. Honestly I kinda grew to like it more than the old UMS method, as the phone was still usable. Just installed ftpdroid and filezilla now, trying to see if I can get this working, let alone access the internal storage.
Alright, so far, I will give this a 4 out of 5 stars. only 4 because I'm not quite familliar with the interface and it is pretty intimidating. I do however LOVE that I can simply resume the transfer process should my phone reboots, which it did, so I don't have to start all over. Pretty sexy.
If you have some kind of guide or easy way of explaining this, I'd love to see/hear it. appears it's about 2.5mb/s, which is the average speed of my data plan for my ISP, so Idk if it goes off the router or my upload/download speed limit.
@DocHoliday77, I will look into your method, but if you could explain it a bit to me that would be great. I know little to nothing about FTP.
Super simple. Make sure you're on wifi.
Open the app and start the server.
Open Explorer on your computer and in the address/path bar enter exactly what it says in the app.
Ftp://192.168.x.x:2121
Enter pw.
That's it.

You could also transfer the files to a MicroSD Card or USB Thumbdrive (via OTG) and then do the same on the new phone.

OTG = On The Go
I believe its a usb cable you can use to connect storage devices to your phone.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that please.

Yes, it's female USB - male micro USB connector. For connecting any USB device to a micro USB device (ie. the phone).

OTG is USB On-The-Go, aka USB Host mode. You can plug in USB devices into your phone and use them directly. I was suggesting to plug a a thumbdrive into your OTG cable into your phone and copy the files to it using ES File Explorer or similar.
Ah ok I think I understand. Well I tried the ftp method yesterday and pretty sure I pulled everything I needed off of it. Slowly migrating to the new device. Don't need orphan data and such.
Using mtp on the new device seems to work well, though haven't tried to pull anything off it, just push. Will test later tonight. Perhaps getting this refurb'd device was smart in the long run besides just LTE? Funny how things work...

WiFi Tethering Still A Problem For This Device...WHY?

I know this is probably not the section for this topic but there have been several posts on it with no definitive answers....I use FoxFi WiFi Tether on all my devices without a glitch, even the new Nexus 5, but not this phone " WHY ????? ", it doesn't make sense. With this device it shows a connection to the computer but it wont allow the internet connection....I can use the USB function of the FoxFi but have to install PDAnet to work. I know TrevE WiFi Tether app is installed with most Roms and works to a certain degree but not copletely with ZVC. From what I can deduce, it has something to do with the WPA (WPA2) settings for the phone. This is obviously a Dev issue so will someone with the know-how fix this problem for everyone....Personally, I will be happy to donate to someone to get it done.....so "Brains", get a project going on it and help us out....Thanks...

I never had a problem with Treve Wifi tether, although I don't use it for long at a time I just set device to galaxy nexus cdma/lte and it works. I do wish we had the native option enabled like my wifes S3 and our old Evo's, the native option is by far the best.
That's really weird.. I don't have any issues with WiFi tethering. Please request a moderator to move this to Q&A Wrong Section!!!!

I'm not the only one with this problem....In the Q&A section there are several posts on this with no solution. I already stated I can use TrevE wifi tether and it connects but it will not let me download torrents or other tracked downloads....I appreciate your input and please humor me by trying to download a torrent and let me know if you can. If you can, please give me your settings and which Rom and Kernel you are using. I placed this thread here to try to get better responses because no one is offering any solutions in any of the other threads.

Thank you for your response. I've tried every setting possible that I know of for TrevE wifi, and like I said, I can connect but it does not let me download torrents and any tracked downloads. When I was on ZV9 Lifeless it worked fine but upgrading to ZVC caused the problems. I will ask you as I asked the other responder, please try to download a torrent with Utorrent and let me know if you can. If you can I would appreciate knowing what Rom, Kernel and Wifi settings you have. Thanks.

Well actually, I've downloaded a couple thinking that would work and tried to install but I can't get data working. I even tried that "apn" fix. At first, I downloaded Kit Kat 4.4, then CM 11. After initial install I don't have any service what so ever then after the "apn" fix, I have service but no data. I've never used AOSP Roms before so apparently I have no idea what I am doing installing them. If you have any pointers I would appreciate it.
PM me if you want.

It may be something with your phone then if you cant get tether on any aosp rom. Did you use Freegee to flash recovery? I only ask because the newer aosp roms some require a special recovery for them to flash correctly but if you use Freegee either recovery works just fine.

I flashef back to dev edition 5.0 and used Treve wifi tether to download a torrent on my wifes S3. The only thing I did was change device profile to generic wlan0 and check send netd max client cmd.

I know this is an issue with the OG because its the only phone FoxFi does not work on.....and Ive tried 17 different phones, all the major brands and a couple china phones too. On my old S3, both FoxFi and TrevE worked fine...Is there a built in firewall in the WiFi system of this phone? Damn i wish I knew how to rewrite script...

Im kinda confused now because I've download torrents on my phone and my nexus 7 using utorrent and wifi tether, I just downloaded the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World soundtrack on my nexus 7 so I know it works. I will try Foxfi and see what happens but I would guess Treve wifi would be the better option. Have you tried Treve wifi using the settings I mentioned above, I've been using treve wifi since evo3d days and never had a problem once I got it setup properly.
if we can get through entitlement checks for the tether all the others will work after that i bet. i suck at smali but there are lots of devs that done in here. any takers?

Yes, I've tried your settings. I have the DE v5 download....I'll install it again and try your settings on that Rom....do kernels have anything to do with the wifi stuff?
Thanks for continuing to try and help...

So basically you are saying it is possible to make the wifi tethering issues better for this device, just finding a Dev to work out the problems is the issue..
Like I've said before, I don't mind donating to that project if someone will step up to do it. I'm simple minded when it comes to stuff like that but would it not be possible to copy code from another LG device ( like the Nexus 5) that tether works well and just work it in?

i was looking at another source for the sprint gs4 it is missing all the entitlement smali code in services.jar so even if you delete the entitlement code you have to sift through the other files to delete any other code that defines the entitlement code. ill pull both of them up on a diff viewer.
and see how different they really are....

OK I thought you were trying to download on your phone. On your computer you have to make sure the correct ports are open. Im not sure but I think the ports that need to be open for torrents start around 6881 and if its not open the program will try to use the next available port that can be used for torrents. Vuze makes setup easy and is much faster than bittorrent or utorrent and its not constantly downloading background stuff like bittorrent and utorrent.
