MTP bug? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Trying to pull everything off my internal SD from my t999 to place into my t999L, and if I attempt to copy more than one folder, I see a never ending "calculating time required to copy". Ive tried 2 different computers running win7 32bit. One was just recently reformatted too.... Drivers are installed because I just flashed twrp to my t999L
Running vanilla root box latest nightly

It's fussy, that's for sure. The particular driver you are using could make a difference. I don't use MTP much because it's more trouble than it's worth, but the drivers in my signature were working alright, the first link.
I just use FTP now (FTPDroidPro+FileZilla). Never any problems. The only time I would want MTP is for copying several GB of data. But since I back up often (and upload pictures to Dropbox), this situation rarely happens.

That's just it though, I'm attempting to pull about 10gb worth of data. I'll try your drivers, the 1.5 one. I will report back. those apps though, are they both for android or are they windows applications?

FTPDroidPro is the FTP server that sits on the phone. Do not remember if there is a free version, but probably, since, well.... Pro. FileZilla is the client and I think it's open source. Either way, it's free.
My router is terrible, and I can still transfer 4MB/s. With a nice router, I'm sure it's faster than USB 2.0. FTPDroidPro also has support for root access. That is incredibly useful.

The only thing I can think of is that this is either a 4.2.2 issue or related to Vanilla Rootbox exclusively. Just tried your driver and still the same issue. Guess I have no other choice is to try your app combo and see what happens. This is most frustrating, as my music and pictures are stuck on my old sgs3 and would rather not live without them

In case there isn't a free version of Aerowinders, this is what I use, and it does have a free counterpart if you just want to try it our way.

If you need any help setting up, let me know.
There's probably nothing wrong with your phone or the computer. I've had tons of issues, too. One more thing you could try would be to make sure those drivers are fully uninstalled (through device manager also), and install the old 1.4.6.0 ones. These old ones probably won't work with your LTE version, though. Just another thought. I personally think FTPing is the better solution. It's faster than digging out the cable, for me.

Never had an issue with MTP until today. Honestly I kinda grew to like it more than the old UMS method, as the phone was still usable. Just installed ftpdroid and filezilla now, trying to see if I can get this working, let alone access the internal storage.

Alright, so far, I will give this a 4 out of 5 stars. only 4 because I'm not quite familliar with the interface and it is pretty intimidating. I do however LOVE that I can simply resume the transfer process should my phone reboots, which it did, so I don't have to start all over. Pretty sexy.
If you have some kind of guide or easy way of explaining this, I'd love to see/hear it. appears it's about 2.5mb/s, which is the average speed of my data plan for my ISP, so Idk if it goes off the router or my upload/download speed limit.
@DocHoliday77, I will look into your method, but if you could explain it a bit to me that would be great. I know little to nothing about FTP.

Super simple. Make sure you're on wifi.
Open the app and start the server.
Open Explorer on your computer and in the address/path bar enter exactly what it says in the app.
Ftp://192.168.x.x:2121
Enter pw.
That's it.

You could also transfer the files to a MicroSD Card or USB Thumbdrive (via OTG) and then do the same on the new phone.

I saw that in the new twrp. What's otg? And I could use this to pull things off the internal memory? Cuz I have an sdcard reader

OTG = On The Go
I believe its a usb cable you can use to connect storage devices to your phone.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that please.

Yes, it's female USB - male micro USB connector. For connecting any USB device to a micro USB device (ie. the phone).

OTG is USB On-The-Go, aka USB Host mode. You can plug in USB devices into your phone and use them directly. I was suggesting to plug a a thumbdrive into your OTG cable into your phone and copy the files to it using ES File Explorer or similar.

Ah ok I think I understand. Well I tried the ftp method yesterday and pretty sure I pulled everything I needed off of it. Slowly migrating to the new device. Don't need orphan data and such.
Using mtp on the new device seems to work well, though haven't tried to pull anything off it, just push. Will test later tonight. Perhaps getting this refurb'd device was smart in the long run besides just LTE? Funny how things work...

If your pictures are on your micro SD card then you can just put that in another device and get the pictures off that way or get a micro SD to SD card converter on eBay.
Hope I helped!
i know this isn't really a how to fix it, but there was a thread somewhere i think that was posted in the in the general section that had the exact same problem. It was fixed by running a program where you control the phone with your computer... i think.. or it allowed you to display the screen of the phone on your computer... you can also try to use an mhl adapter.
sorry i can't help, but if you dig a little you might be able to find that thread. don't exactly remember how the exact process went, but it solved the problem

You're thinking of using a VNC server? That will do it but the problem is that he has to install it on his phone....wait but that a can be done via adb or desktop play store. He will have to do it over wifi in order to determine the IP of the device so he can connect to the server.

Can't you just connect the phone to your laptop via usb and transfer the pics?? Or am I missing something here

I got pics off my broken vibrant with Droid explorer. It does require root and USB debugging to be on. Thankfully I always left it on. You also need to set up adb on your computer.
Other than that I'm not sure. It took months of asking arOund and almost wiping my Sd with bad adb commands.
My phone broke and it took five months before figuring it out after giving up.

I think it was something like this.
I really can't remember the thread was like in January/February.
So OP hope you're up for some searching and hope you can find the correct terms to search with...
edit: found it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501169&highlight=mhl&page=2
it is droid explorer.
However, if you're not rooted yeah.... and if your usb debugging isn't on... yeahh....
if you think you can still control the screen... then try an mhl adapter. that may be your last choice besides replacing the screen.

Cannot transfer files via usb...major pain in the butt!!

I have tried all options, to get my files to transfer using my usb cable, to my computer. I can't download a file to the device, nor can I copy/paste files to and from it, either. I have tried multiple cables, and even when it shows the phone is connected, I still cannot do a thing other than copy small files to it. This is a MAJOR problem, as I do not want to use AirDroid...it doesn't see every file I want to transfer...and something so simple as ancient usb file transfers are not working with this phone. My SGS2 worked just fine...but any help that you can give me would be appreciated. And yes, I have googled the hell out of the inquiry...just none that seem to fix my issues. :good:
what happens when "it doesnt work".
what operating system is your computer? windows I'll guess? Does it show in my computer? can you browse the files on the phone? Or do you get a message from the OS? whats the message it gives you??...

Windows 7 64-bit...It DOES show in MY COMPUTER...yes, I CAN browse the files, yet I cannot move them, nor can I download or copy to the folders. There are also times where I get the Hardware Id Missing error, even after installing Kies or uninstalling it. Sometimes it shows up as USB Mass Storage Device in device manager, other times it shows up as Samsung I-747.
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different cable? I had a similar problem on my phone. I'd try to upload a file to the phone, even a small one, and it would go very slowly and eventually time out. I tried another usb cable and it worked fine.

[Q] interesting usb mounting problem

so, this morning i was trying to transfer files from my computer to my phone, and the connection randomly dropped. i received a notification
that my "samsung device hardware ids" are unrecognizable or something to that effect, and then nothing would transfer to my phone in any capacity..
i continually get an error saying "cannot transfer files, the device is not responding or has been unplugged"
(added a pic of the dialog window)
i toggled the mount as camera PTP option and back to MTP, which sometimes fixes it, same problem.
i thought it may have been the ROM i was on, (i had just flashed it) so i restored a backup (2 different ones actually), same problem.
thought it was my computer (windows 7) freaking out, so i rebooted. same problem, (although after the reboot, the invalid samsung hardware ids notification stopped appearing)
updated and rolled back drivers, same problem.
resorted to kies, thinking it would update or something, no dice.
it's weird because, my computer can see all my files, and so can kies. but i can't transfer anything in or out..
i honestly have no idea how i triggered this, i was simply transferring files like i always do. (and i am using the cable the phone came with)
i don't really want to odin back to stock just yet. considering i have no means of backing up what's on my phone to my computer, and there are things on there i haven't had a chance to back up...
any advice, or ideas i haven't tried, anything at all will help.
(i also did a search for my problem and didn't find any pertinent info to this specific problem, unless i overlooked something.. in which case, i'm sorry for the duplicate question )
My first recommendation would be to reinstall the drivers from Samsung's website. Then try another computer. All else fails, ODIN back to stock and try that. If that doesnt work, take laptop into T-Mobile and show them that its not working. Might be a hardware fault

hopefully it's not a hardware problem.. but i d/led the drivers from the samsung website, rebooted both my compy and my phone, same problem.. so i guess next step is to odin back... bummer.. and i would take my computer to them to show it not working.. except my computer is a rather large desktop rig... heh.. but thank you for your reply and advice. i'll update when i odin back, i suppose..
well... i guess i figured out the problem... upon odin-ing back to stock and trying transferring stuff again, it worked...
although, i must mention that i also found that one of the files i was trying to transfer had gotten corrupted somehow.. and was causing most of the errors, (a hurt-pride way to say, the corrupted file WAS the problem)... so.. basically caused a lot of problems myself, and came to the conclusion that it was operator error. thanks for the advise i got though. sorry for the inconvenience and the time spent reading and replying
Glad you got it figured out, but just for the future try sgs3 Easy UMS. Search it here on xda. Its an app that mounts external sdcard as UMS.
Also you could try a wireless transfer program like SwiFTP. I never transfer files via usb cable anymore.

[Q] MTP won't work

I have my GS3 running the RC2 build of Cyanogenmod, ktoonz kernel, running Windows 7, yadda yadda. MTP has NEVER been reliable for me, it comes and goes, popping up errors and other stuff til I screw with drivers to get it working again. But now, Windows doesn't even recognize that the phone is plugged in. Like Device Manager doesn't show it. Any ideas?

Flash a normal custom rom and be done with all the issues, bugs and stuff which don't work..
Flash a Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 Jellybean 4.1.1 custom rom.
The AOKP/AOSP/CM Cyanogen and ported roms are only good if you are either a developer or just like to experiment.
Good Luck!
Different use port and/or reboot your computer and try again

I only got my laptop, but Windows actually deactivates when i plug my phone in for some stupid reason. Noodling
Wait, it recognises it then disconnects it? That is a windows issue my friend. Sounds like you have a corrupt driver registry. That being said Do Not go digging in the reg to fix.
Plug in your phone to the PC.
Let windows do its thing.
Find the mtp or sgs3 driver in dev mgmt.
(Right click on the "my computer" - select manage. Then device manager.)
In here you should see your device either with an exclamation, question, or nothing. Right click and uninstall. You will want to delete the driver too.
After it is finished d/l the drivers for mtp (I prefer googles drivers) once finished leave the sgs3 plugged in and reboot.
Once back into win the os will ask for drivers. Select let me find the driver - all - and have disk. Point to the d/l drivers and install. If this does not help you might need reg repair which is not an easy task. It is easier to reinstall windows the attempt a registry repair. Let me know how this works for you. I'll keep helping you... Two heads are better than one

I mean on my laptop, Windows 8 deactivates, like I have to re-type in a new product key to fix it. My tower doesn't recognize it at all, nothing in Device Manager, but it charges the phone. I've tried 2 cables so far, gonna borrow another one and try that.
Try that and let me know if it helps. My bet is still one the windows side. Might want to look into reloading your windows if all else fails. You having any issues with other USB devices on this PC? (Printer, thumb drive, external, etc.)

Can't seem to get USB Mass storage to work

Installed LG drivers, tried toggling USB debugging...
My computer flat out will not recognize the phone.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm running slimkat
Last I knew there was no mass storage controller for this device. Not even Stock has mass storage and has to use MTP.
Sent from my LG-E980 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
OK, well how do I enable MTP? I can't seem to find the setting in slimkat. Im honestly not a moron. I've been doing this stuff for 5 years.
Appreciate your help
So apparently, when I plug my phone up ,it should ask if i want MTP or PTP. It does not. I tried reflashing slimkat, and it still did not work...
No one said you was a moron. Not sure why your so hostile. It is a simple statement made that this device doesn't even have mass storage on stock.
The only thing I can suggest is to go to storage and hit the menu button. What happens? Have you asked in the slimKat thread?
I am still on stick but when I ran slim on my Note hitting menu when under storage brought up the options.

Sorry, I think you took that wrong. I was more preemptively defending myself than accusing anyone of calling me a moron lol. I felt silly for having this issue.
I ended up fixing it by wiping and reflashing. Which doesn't make sense logically, but hey, whatever works.
I appreciate your help though
For normal file transfers like media, photos and apk's, try Ftpserver https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer&hl=en
Ever since they dropped USB mass storage on newer devices, I've been using this app. Works like a charm. You do need a ftp software on your PC though.
