Well, hang me if I'm wrong, but I haven't been able to find an existing, relevant thread;
I have a 32x24mm class 4 SD card that, obviously, won't fit in my Arc. I'd like to be able to connect and use it on the device nonetheless, so I've hooked up a SD reader with USB, to a female USB/male micro USB cable, which then plugs into my phone's micro USB port. All goes well and the SD reader's light goes on, indicating it is functioning.
But for the life of me, I can't seem to find out how to actually access it from the phone. There's no relevant notification on the task bar, nor is there a directory I can access it through. Every thread I come across about an 'external SD card' invariably ends up being about the micro SD -inside- the phone, so that's no help.
Updated to the latest version earlier today, and have jiggled every cable. Every. Single. Cable.
Is it even possible to use an external SD card reader with the phone? I would be much obliged if someone could tell me what to jiggle.
Im pretty sure you need to install a kernel that has USB OTG supported.
Someone please elaborate lol i could be wrong
What ROM/Kernel combination are you using?
And if I am not mistaken, only some file explorer apps support USB OTG. Unfortunately, I cannot remember any at the moment.

Yeah, that seems to be it, on further investigation. I assumed the arc supported OTG out of the box, as it were. Most, if not all other phones seem to do, so that's probably it. I'm in the middle of aquiring an appropriate kernel and such, and I'll pop back in once it's done and tell y'all if it works.
Thanks.

What ROM and kernel are you using currently? We cannot help you if you do not share information with us.
I did this once, I had all my music on a usb memory stick and plugged in into my phone which then plugged into my car audio.
This was a while ago though but I do remember my phone getting distubingly hot!
I also think i remember reading that prolonged use of this can cause damage, ill have a look now.

I have tried all options, to get my files to transfer using my usb cable, to my computer. I can't download a file to the device, nor can I copy/paste files to and from it, either. I have tried multiple cables, and even when it shows the phone is connected, I still cannot do a thing other than copy small files to it. This is a MAJOR problem, as I do not want to use AirDroid...it doesn't see every file I want to transfer...and something so simple as ancient usb file transfers are not working with this phone. My SGS2 worked just fine...but any help that you can give me would be appreciated. And yes, I have googled the hell out of the inquiry...just none that seem to fix my issues. :good:

Windows 7 64-bit...It DOES show in MY COMPUTER...yes, I CAN browse the files, yet I cannot move them, nor can I download or copy to the folders. There are also times where I get the Hardware Id Missing error, even after installing Kies or uninstalling it. Sometimes it shows up as USB Mass Storage Device in device manager, other times it shows up as Samsung I-747.
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different cable? I had a similar problem on my phone. I'd try to upload a file to the phone, even a small one, and it would go very slowly and eventually time out. I tried another usb cable and it worked fine.

How can you disable usb from connecting automaticaly. I ask because i plug it into my work compter to charge while at work. and I dont want my files to connect to the computer..
Have not yet rooted first day with phone running sprint stock jellybean
Doing so requires root and a custom kernel.
You need a kernel that supports USB fast charging.
Beamed from my Grouper
May I ask why this is important? If you are that worried about it just don't let your PC install any drivers. It will still charge.
@op, you don't need a custom kernel, nor fast charge for that matter, to only charge through usb.
while it is true that fast charge tweak charges the battery faster, i would advise not to if you value your usb port. it's the only one we've got. note that are many users who use it and have yet to suffer issues. i'm talking about being cautious.
like patruns said, don't install any drivers or make windows/mac (can't talk about those since i don't use them at home, and at work user policies are in place, so no power user access, let alone root, and i don't care) ignore the device. it will still charge i believe. mine even charges if i turn off the computer but leave the phone connected.
the phone charges fine. I don't want my phone to mount as a media drive when i connect it. I just want to charge. is this possible? My EVO would give me the option to connect when i plugged it in. I would just rather not mount my files to my work computer. if this is not possible no biggie. also while on the subject of usb I cannot get my phone to mount to ubuntu 12 I tried gtmp and no luck. does anyone have any resources they could point me to?
and I did not install any drivers i just connected first time I plugged it in.
Gnex uses MTP, if you don't want it to connect, you will have to uninstall Windows Media Player(I think so, i seen someone say MTP drivers are installed along with Windows Media Player, i could be wrong though)

It took me a while, but I realized that my phone isn't detected properly when I plug into my computer on this rom. Because of this, I also cannot reverse tether, which is quite a deal breaker because I only have H+ or lower in my apartment and there is no wifi here. I read this particular comment in the thread:
"Search for USB Mass Storage Enabler in the Play Store. This will at least allow your external SD card to show up with out any changes. I believe they are working on fixing MTP."
I'd like to try this, but I restored back to Jedi rom and don't have time to reflash right now. Can someone please test it and tell me if you can reverse tether using that app on the Google Edition rom? Thanks

If you read the description of that app that has been mentioned to you, you wouldn't question. You can't see your external or internal drive is because of the Fast Charge option built in the Kernel. James is working on a way around. That app was mentioned for the people who wanted to transfer items back and forth between their phone and computer not for tethering.
Flash KT kernel, i believe that fixes it...if not send me a message will send you the other kernel just dont have link to it right now.

It's fussy, that's for sure. The particular driver you are using could make a difference. I don't use MTP much because it's more trouble than it's worth, but the drivers in my signature were working alright, the first link.
I just use FTP now (FTPDroidPro+FileZilla). Never any problems. The only time I would want MTP is for copying several GB of data. But since I back up often (and upload pictures to Dropbox), this situation rarely happens.

FTPDroidPro is the FTP server that sits on the phone. Do not remember if there is a free version, but probably, since, well.... Pro. FileZilla is the client and I think it's open source. Either way, it's free.
My router is terrible, and I can still transfer 4MB/s. With a nice router, I'm sure it's faster than USB 2.0. FTPDroidPro also has support for root access. That is incredibly useful.

The only thing I can think of is that this is either a 4.2.2 issue or related to Vanilla Rootbox exclusively. Just tried your driver and still the same issue. Guess I have no other choice is to try your app combo and see what happens. This is most frustrating, as my music and pictures are stuck on my old sgs3 and would rather not live without them

If you need any help setting up, let me know.
There's probably nothing wrong with your phone or the computer. I've had tons of issues, too. One more thing you could try would be to make sure those drivers are fully uninstalled (through device manager also), and install the old 1.4.6.0 ones. These old ones probably won't work with your LTE version, though. Just another thought. I personally think FTPing is the better solution. It's faster than digging out the cable, for me.

Never had an issue with MTP until today. Honestly I kinda grew to like it more than the old UMS method, as the phone was still usable. Just installed ftpdroid and filezilla now, trying to see if I can get this working, let alone access the internal storage.
Alright, so far, I will give this a 4 out of 5 stars. only 4 because I'm not quite familliar with the interface and it is pretty intimidating. I do however LOVE that I can simply resume the transfer process should my phone reboots, which it did, so I don't have to start all over. Pretty sexy.
If you have some kind of guide or easy way of explaining this, I'd love to see/hear it. appears it's about 2.5mb/s, which is the average speed of my data plan for my ISP, so Idk if it goes off the router or my upload/download speed limit.
@DocHoliday77, I will look into your method, but if you could explain it a bit to me that would be great. I know little to nothing about FTP.
Super simple. Make sure you're on wifi.
Open the app and start the server.
Open Explorer on your computer and in the address/path bar enter exactly what it says in the app.
Ftp://192.168.x.x:2121
Enter pw.
That's it.

OTG is USB On-The-Go, aka USB Host mode. You can plug in USB devices into your phone and use them directly. I was suggesting to plug a a thumbdrive into your OTG cable into your phone and copy the files to it using ES File Explorer or similar.
Ah ok I think I understand. Well I tried the ftp method yesterday and pretty sure I pulled everything I needed off of it. Slowly migrating to the new device. Don't need orphan data and such.
Using mtp on the new device seems to work well, though haven't tried to pull anything off it, just push. Will test later tonight. Perhaps getting this refurb'd device was smart in the long run besides just LTE? Funny how things work...

No power to card reader (led indicator on reader). Piggy backed a second standard USB cable to use power from laptop to verif operation. Anyone been able to use the otg?
Any thought on on why my setup doesn't work?
Suggestions on things to try?

Just went back threw double checking my self. Found after applying otg on, immediately going back in to those options it was set to off. Tried multiple times with same result.

Can't charge battery. Assuming a problem with compatability. Need to get back to original kernel.

Seny from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using xda app-developers app
Nope that didn't work either. Tried just otg helper, just stick mount, kernal tuner with both kernel versions, with and without y cable. No device found in all scenarios. Now back to original Random Rom kernel. In kernel tuner with both kernel versions the turn on otg would not stay selected on. With patchas there was a fast charge option I selected to verify that a selection would stay as requested, which it did.
Does it hurt the phone to be flashing multiple packages?
Just changed plans and now i can text. Was just emailing before. I can recieve texts but camt send any.essage status "pending". So far after
2 hrs with at they dont know whats going on. Just thought i would ask if there was somthing i turned on (text blocking) that i dont rember and cant find within the rom.
Thanks
