When I try to use any VPN app such as HideNinja VPN, Tunnel Bear, and OpenVPN, I get an error message stating that this image does not support VPN api!
But I know that it works fine with stock rom and CM10.1 Nightly, so I am really not sure what the problem is. I tried PMing the dev that put out the Lab Rats Rom l, believe Fryingpan something, but he replied that he never used vpn hence it's basically not his problem, and to post here to see if someone can figure out how to fix this problem.
Obviously I have a Rooted SPH L900 running Lab Rats v2.3 plus Perseus alpha36 Kernel, and MA7 Baseband Modem. But even with original kernel that Lab Rats v2.3 comes with same problem.
Also, I tried using OpenVPN Installer app to install the necessary Binary, and made sure that I had Tun.ko installed as well, still nothing.
P.S. Hola and Orbot work!
Anybody can help me or know a fix, I'd highly appreciate it!

So I had to leave Lab Rats since I didn't have vpn, but after not really liking any other Roms, as soon as Lab Rats ver2.4.5 came out, I had to go back. But again still no vpn. I tried Googling the error message I got, "Your Image Does Not Support VPNService API, Sorry!" and the only thing that came up on Google is that people who are running Sony Xperia are having that issue, but I was like I don't think Lab Rats was ported from Sony Xperia, so then I decided to look for anything VPN in the Lab Rats zip file, and the only thing I found was an apk in system called EdmVpnServices.apk, so then I checked out the zip of some other MA7 based Deodexed TouchWiz rom and I saw that it too had that same apk file, but what it also had that Lab Rats didn't was these two apks, ( VpnDialogs.apk & VpnClient.apk), so I decided to extract them from the zip and then copy & paste them into my System-->Apps via Root Explorer app, and then I simply rebooted my phone, and Voila! I no longer got the error message and all my vpn apps like Tunnel Bear, HideNinja VPN, & OpenVPN all connected seamlessly!
I since then emailed the dev letting him know, but I decided to post it here in my thread to let you'll know. But remember that I am not a dev, and have no knowledge nor skill in any of this. Though this might be a temp fix, it might cause other issues, so until or unless the dev decides to post this info in his Lab Rats thread, this won't be the official fix for said problem until further notice. But anyone who is running Lab Rats and really needs vpn, you can do what I did, and get your vpn to work...
Thanks.
Please comment if you have further insight!

No one on rats or that avidly uses rats would agree with the dev saying its not his problem so stop right there with that nonsense!
Have you asked openly in the forum for anyone that uses vpn? What did they say? How many have either confirmed nor denied your issue?
I dont use it either and dont know anyone that does but if you have an app in mind that you would like tried out I would be happy to try and work it out w you.
Yeah, openly asking in the thread would have worked, too.

Before I begin, let me preface by saying how eternally grateful I am to the xda and wider development communities. You guys are awesome.
I'm new to the Epic, and for that matter new to Android, coming from a Windows Mobile device. Right out of the box, I knew I needed to hack this thing to allow for the kind of control I've grown accustomed to. Took me some time to mount it to my computer, a lot longer to root it permanently; then I realized that the most popular rom (at least on this board), Viper, needed me to be on the leaked stock, so I flashed to that, changed file system, and then flashed the VIPERrom 4.0.2c. I was pretty happy for a few minutes. Yay to getting rid of bloat ware! Yay to LauncherPro.
But then I realize, this thing doesn't have built-in wifi tethering. I thought that was THE big new feature back in Android 2.2, and the top ROM for my device doesn't have it? The only mention I see in the Viper thread is a suggestion that Barnacle worked for some people. Well that little program didn't work for me, and while I got a little further with Muller's "Wireless Tether", none of these apps are really doing it for me.
Is there no ROM for Samsung Epic that tethers out of the box? Am I the only one that considers connection sharing a really important feature for a 4G device? What's the deal here?
The app your looking for is Wireless tether for root users. Its the best of its kind. Not really sure how it works on viper but its fine on epic experience. And this is the development section.. something like this should go in general.

You're right, I wasn't thinking about where this should go. Can I delete/move the thread?
Your going to have to go back to di18 firmware and search. [WIP]MobileAP epic. There is a link in that thread to the hacked sprint hot spot. This should get you were you want. As for a good di18 use aphis and Xtreme kernel. Good luck. make sure you search too. you will get flamed hard for posting in the wrong section..
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
wireless tethering is very buggy ATM on all Epic 2.2 builds, we don't have source for the kernel and to tether, theres changes that need to be made to the kernel. The best option for tethering and stability would be to stay with a 2.1 rom like Syndicate 1.0.2. It supports wired and wireless tether, both built in to the rom. You can use 2.1 roms with the DK28 modem or any of the others.

You cannot delete or move the thread on your own. I suggest you read the rules before posting anything else! At least one of the versions of wireless tether has always worked for me.

What is it your trying to tether off your epic?Wireless tether for root users should works for laptops if it is another android device like a tablet your trying to tether the tablet or other android device will need to be hacked to be able to allow it to see adhoc networks. If it is just a laptop though one of the versions wireless tether for root users should work though roms can be picky as to which version of wireless tether they will use.
Please post questions in Q&A section. Everyone please remember to click the "Report Post" button on the original post to have immediate action taken by the moderators. Also do not post in the thread itself telling the user that he made a mistake or broke a rule as it doesn't contribute to the thread and is unnecessary.

For everyone's information, the Report Post feature is the red triangle in the top-right corner of a post with the "!" inside of it.
I'm using Wireless Tether for Root Users on ViperROM 4.0.2c and it works like a charm. It was baked in for me...? However it wasn't working so I uninstalld and reinstalled from the market. It works very very well. Until we get mobileAP working on dk28, this is the best.

All very interesting, and new to me. In reality, I think the Muller wireless tether app was working on Viper, but I wasn't getting past the local network. I've got it figured out now, but it's not quite what I had been hoping for. Regarding the source for the kernel, aren't they obligated to release that code based on the open source licensing? Is it just really laborious to merge the older Sprint kernel source with the relevant Froyo code?
In the meantime, I'll have to look into the 2.1 ROMs as you mention.

I am looking to make this thread as a resource to use to remove all the crap. I am not sure if AT&T people have to keep some of this crap on there for it to run right but I want all bloat minimized to the MAX. I will update this as people comment what they removed without any problems afterwards.
I’ve gone on an uninstalling spree making sure to make backups first since titanium recommended it. Not sure if and what will have detrimental effects but I will learn when it happens. ROM has been running smooth and fast, no crashes, radio, or button problems so far.

On the main screen go to "Backup/Restore". You will then get a list of apps that are installed on the system. To remove simply tap on one and hit "Un-Install!"
There are a few more apks that start with the letters SNS that can also be uninstalled or frozen. I uninstalled all SNS apks with no issues.

Thanks for making the list of crapware we can remove safely. Its pretty awesome how everybody is really helping out. I dont know what I would do without the amazing people here at XDA! Its crazy that the devs on here spend so much time improving our phones without asking for anything except a "thannks" or the occasional donation. These guys deserve a round of applause! Thank You
small tip, im not sure if its the paid version or not but if you guys dont wanna risk messing up you phone by doing this, try to just "freeze" the apps instead of actually uninstalling them.
Oh for sure..I always just freeze. Good tip though.

Because they're busy making the rom work? it was just released man...
I understand that they would want to make everything work first before they test and remove certain apps which might break it. Yes they know some apps are considered bloatware but priorities... Maybe some people could find some use in some of the bloat. Wouldn't the dev find it easier to have everyone else uninstall what they don't want instead of having people whining about something missing?
BTW this is a PORT, usually ports have everything that it came with.
Yea thanks I got tid if all of the non needed stuff. Thanks for the list.

That is definitely an Internet Explorer issue unrelated to the site. There are two possible causes. The first is that you are behind a firewall that is blocking the site. The second and most likely cause is Internet Explorer has forgotten how to access the internet (no joke).
I've been working in the computer field for many years and have seen this numerous times. You can have a computer that has IE and any other browser. IE will fail to open sites and complain about not having an internet connection or the page doesn't exist. Any other browser run on the same computer has no issue surfing the internet and accessing the same sites that IE said didn't exist. I suggest trying another browser. (This would also explain why you can see the screencaps)
With regards to providing direct links to the ROM, there is a reason why I do not do that. In addition to my own development work I also host/maintain the archive of all the factory software for the Photon as well as other hard to find software tools. Seeing that donations have stopped completely in this economy the ads on my site are the only way to help pay for hosting costs, even if it's only a very small portion. I hope you understand.
very right up you

Try the stock KPI firmware first and see if you have the same issue. If you have issues with the stock KPI firmware let us know. Then try my release and see if the issues are there as well. Wifi or BT not working in one specific region of the world is hard to troubleshoot.

no, it will not work on aosp. no it will not work on i9505 roms. no it will not work on google edition roms (yet, porting it to those kinds of roms will be much easier since its based on touchwiz code, but still a challenge) yes it will work on an unlocked s4 from another carrier with a tmobile sim.
please guys, start using the search function, this question has been asked 100 different ways in 100 different threads
If it was that easy there wouldn't be a $10k bounty on it.

While this is true now....it will not be true forever.
People are trying to crack it and are getting the app to run smoothly and almost have it authenticating with a t mobile account. So progress is being made.
For the people who don't know the problem with just restoring the backed up app is that the app is just the interface for WiFi calling. The actual ability to do WiFi calling is baked into the framework of the stock ROM with various prices hurried all over the place.

I always thought the reason we can't get WiFi calling on any ROM was NOT because of apks but because of .so and lib files that cannot be decompiled.

I saw the thread in the development section claiming what services and libs and such were needed. I do recall reading another thread back when i had my S2 that said the bootloader or kernel? is part of it as well. Which is why those lib files needed to be edited.

Oh that's right...the libs weren't just hidden they needed to be modded as well. The ICS WiFi calling only took about a month to hack and port. T mobile got more creative on the jellybean version. Though I don't know why. They still can control authentication of a device and user account on their end. Its not like you can just steal t mobile service by installing WiFi calling.

true. But I give T-Mobile credit. I mean why port something that is exclusive to their phones and devices? It's not like it's taking control of your device like a locked bootloader or something like that. I say if you want WiFi calling then use a stock based ROM. There are hundreds out there plus with all the modding going on I'm sure there 90 percent pa aosp features can be added

As of 4.3 I keep getting the pop up "To enable mobile hotspot on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611" message any time I try to enable a mobile hotspot application.
So my question is, has anyone found a good workaround without rooting? If root will be mandatory can someone suggest an idiots guide to rooting? Because I have zero experience with rooting an android device.
Thanks in advance.
You're not alone. I'm having the same issue. I can't root because my company pays for the phone and they use Mobile Iron to push email, calendar, etc.. Hoping someone comes up with a nice work around that PDANet / FoxFi can leverage to get the wifi hotspot working again. In the mean time, using the Bluetooth tethering option on PDANet seems to still be working..

You assume all responsibility of anything that may or may not happen by using the information in this post. Use the information carefully.
I contacted enewman17 and inquired about the link below \/ \/ \/ he advised me that it should be flashable via custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) to any AT&T I747 on 4.3 regardless of rom or kernel and possibly without root. He also said he thinks it may work on the I747M also.
If any I747M users flash it and are successful or unsuccessful please let me know so I can post whether this is effective for that as well.
I don't know if you can use this or not, I am rooted and have a custom stockish rom and kernel. I couldn't get anything else to work then I found tether hack with bluetooth from enewman17 flashed it via custom recovery and my native tethering now works without questioning whether I pay my carrier for tethering services or not.
You should research where this can be used and how to use it before doing anything I found it in one of the threads I was getting a rom from and took a chance by flashing it over my current rom. It worked but I'm not on stock anything.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll give it a try. I was trying to avoid rooting simply due to my ignorance about the process so I appreciate any and all suggestions.

I tried the Bluetooth hack with PDA and while it worked it was painfully slow (almost dial-up slow to be honest), how is it working for you? Maybe I needed to fiddle with the settings differently?
I tether to a TF700 (soon to be a Note 2014 edition if Santa is listening).

It isn't nearly as fast as a wifi hotspot connection, but it isn't horrible for surfing, reading forums, etc.. Certainly can't stream movies on it. Attached you can see my Ookla results..

I'll have to download it again and adjust some settings, I was getting barely 1/10th of that on Ooklah/speedtest.
That gives me some hope though, I really just want something I can fiddle on the web with on my tablet while out for lunch etc.
Thanks again!
