Before I begin, let me preface by saying how eternally grateful I am to the xda and wider development communities. You guys are awesome.
I'm new to the Epic, and for that matter new to Android, coming from a Windows Mobile device. Right out of the box, I knew I needed to hack this thing to allow for the kind of control I've grown accustomed to. Took me some time to mount it to my computer, a lot longer to root it permanently; then I realized that the most popular rom (at least on this board), Viper, needed me to be on the leaked stock, so I flashed to that, changed file system, and then flashed the VIPERrom 4.0.2c. I was pretty happy for a few minutes. Yay to getting rid of bloat ware! Yay to LauncherPro.
But then I realize, this thing doesn't have built-in wifi tethering. I thought that was THE big new feature back in Android 2.2, and the top ROM for my device doesn't have it? The only mention I see in the Viper thread is a suggestion that Barnacle worked for some people. Well that little program didn't work for me, and while I got a little further with Muller's "Wireless Tether", none of these apps are really doing it for me.
Is there no ROM for Samsung Epic that tethers out of the box? Am I the only one that considers connection sharing a really important feature for a 4G device? What's the deal here?
The app your looking for is Wireless tether for root users. Its the best of its kind. Not really sure how it works on viper but its fine on epic experience. And this is the development section.. something like this should go in general.

You're right, I wasn't thinking about where this should go. Can I delete/move the thread?
Your going to have to go back to di18 firmware and search. [WIP]MobileAP epic. There is a link in that thread to the hacked sprint hot spot. This should get you were you want. As for a good di18 use aphis and Xtreme kernel. Good luck. make sure you search too. you will get flamed hard for posting in the wrong section..

wireless tethering is very buggy ATM on all Epic 2.2 builds, we don't have source for the kernel and to tether, theres changes that need to be made to the kernel. The best option for tethering and stability would be to stay with a 2.1 rom like Syndicate 1.0.2. It supports wired and wireless tether, both built in to the rom. You can use 2.1 roms with the DK28 modem or any of the others.

You cannot delete or move the thread on your own. I suggest you read the rules before posting anything else! At least one of the versions of wireless tether has always worked for me.

What is it your trying to tether off your epic?Wireless tether for root users should works for laptops if it is another android device like a tablet your trying to tether the tablet or other android device will need to be hacked to be able to allow it to see adhoc networks. If it is just a laptop though one of the versions wireless tether for root users should work though roms can be picky as to which version of wireless tether they will use.
Please post questions in Q&A section. Everyone please remember to click the "Report Post" button on the original post to have immediate action taken by the moderators. Also do not post in the thread itself telling the user that he made a mistake or broke a rule as it doesn't contribute to the thread and is unnecessary.

I'm using Wireless Tether for Root Users on ViperROM 4.0.2c and it works like a charm. It was baked in for me...? However it wasn't working so I uninstalld and reinstalled from the market. It works very very well. Until we get mobileAP working on dk28, this is the best.

All very interesting, and new to me. In reality, I think the Muller wireless tether app was working on Viper, but I wasn't getting past the local network. I've got it figured out now, but it's not quite what I had been hoping for. Regarding the source for the kernel, aren't they obligated to release that code based on the open source licensing? Is it just really laborious to merge the older Sprint kernel source with the relevant Froyo code?
In the meantime, I'll have to look into the 2.1 ROMs as you mention.

i tested out all the wifi tethering apps and this one was by FAR the best. Fastest speeds. Easily allows 4g tethering. compared to barnacle, wifi tether, and wireless tether, and its Noticeably faster. I only tried it cuz I couldn't get the sprint hotspot hack on my ROM. So if you're in this group, or even not (speeds are very very comparable, if not faster, than sprint hotspot), TRY IT OUT!

Yeah I like this better then wifi tether, but they used the exact same layout as wifi tether, lol, thanks open source
I like this one as well, becuase my ipod can connect to it.
it is basically the same layout as wifi tether and a few others..but it doesnt need to activate sprint hotspot. whenever it did that for me i had serious issues. plus this one gives faster speeds

Yup, the old one would require a wipe cache/dalvik in order to use native Hotspot so it definately caused some conflict. Just ran YouTube and there was no freezing or lag

i think EH17 broke this app, i couldn't get it to broadcast a wifi connection and there is some text that comes up about a missing file in /data/.../ when i reinstalled.
It did that for me a few times, too, but when I re-launched the app*, it worked.
*relaunched as in, immediately after it gave me the error and closed; if you're using the Hurricane ROM, you should also download Root Checker from the Market - for some reason, even though BusyBox was supposed to be installed, it wasn't and I had to download a separate installer to make it all work.
Why does this app require permission to fine gps location?
Will try it. Hope it works better than wifi tether. Had it crash on me this weekend while power was out and totally destroyed my rom, not even restoring a back up would stop the force closes, also had journaling enabled.

lol: "You can view a map of our current users of the tethering application for Android: Open garden Wifi Tether Map"
http://opengarden.com/map/
Just used apktool and ran diff -ur -I '^ \.line [0-9]*$' wireless_tether_2_0_7/smali/ og.android.tether/smali/.
Now I'm pissed off.
A This is clearly based on wireless tether 2.x. This is a GPL violation, as they do not provide source code. How is opengarden different? There is code pertaining to wakelock handling, and:
B Functions that collect your GPS location and device id. I've browsed through their site, and they (claim) to have a plan to create a free public mesh network, but:
C They fail to mention this in the market description, or the app itself.
Since this modified GPL app, I am perfectly within my rights to modify the app, so I have removed all code pertaining to stats collection (as well as the FINE_LOCATION permission), and am posting this fork here, on the assumption that the wakelock handling makes this thing worthwhile.
Enjoy.
Has anyone tested this on a GB rom?
my devices cannot detect my wifi tether on rooted e4gt. Just installed calkulins rom v1.5a. the wifi tether app says its on but nothing. i tried messing with settings but got no results.
is anyone else experiencing this?
Let me tell you about my Wifi Tether experience with my E4GT.
I did the basic ROOT+CWM5 so I could run Wifi-Tether and Adfree.
I downloaded Wifi-Tether 2.0.7 Stable and it said it was on but my PC/Windows 7 box couldn't see it. My MacBook couldn't see it etc.
I snagged the 3.0.xxx Beta Wifi-Tether, whatever the newest Beta is and it worked.

The newest beta of wifi tether works for me. Only problem I have with it is it still broadcasts an SSID after I shut it off. No data connection, just the SSID. I need to reboot to get it to stop. Aside from that little quirk, it works just fine.

OP was referring to Sprint Hotspot app and others are trying to give him some alternatives. Its seems many people have had issues getting it to work. I run Rogue kernel and have no issue. I have had no issue with no matter kernel/rom combo I use actually.
I had tough times getting the wifi tether to work. I went with a rom that hacks the hotspot. Much better imo. Now my OG Epic and my Epic Touch can run hot spots just fine.

No way of getting around that. Your computer should ne able to connect to adhoc mine does. As far had the sprint hotspot hack mostvof the roms out have the hack and tour comp should be able to see that as well... though its only a 3g connection 4g doesnt workvon it for now

These are the current settings of my phone. Flashed Blend today and it's been great for the most part so far. There's no native wifi tether app, so I installed Wifi Tether.apk (I believe this is the most common, some ROMs even have this inbuilt.
I got it from http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ and used QBKING's video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQpIxUxnCqU to install it. However, my wireless network SSID won't show up on the laptop. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!!!
Because it's ICS modem, you need to change the device profile to 'Nexus CDMA'.
The Sprint hotspot app should work for WiFi tethering.

If you have a Sprint Hotspot on EL29, then you can use it. If you don't have a 'hotspot' plan with sprint, using this Sprint hotspot (modified on EL29) should not charge you any money.
I am hoping that open garden makes a version for ICS. On gingerbread the hacked hotspot usually take a few minutes to kick in. Open gardens app gives internet access immediately. Great app, worth donating for.

are you sure? this is the regular touchwiz, i don't see how it'd be 'hacked' to be free. I don't want a long bill with hotspot charges
If you are using a ROM that has included the Sprint Hotspot hack (which I believe blend does) then no, Sprint should not charge you.. I would just recommend to not go crazy on usage though.

You need to go the place where you downloaded the rom and read carefully if the rom is including the Sprint hopspot hack. If it's including the Sprint hotspot, you will see the similar information like below -
(Crawrj's & Maddoggin's Hotspot hacks to unlock Sprint Hotspot & USB tethering)
The difference between Stock Sprint Hotspot and hacked Hopspot is, Stock Hotspot will not work for you if you don't have hotspot plan or it will ask to to activate the Hotspot. But for the hacked Sprint Hotspot, it just works and shows the 'activated' notification without asking anything.
There are lots of thread related to the same topic. If you spend just about 5 minutes, you will figure everything out by yourself.

no, it will not work on aosp. no it will not work on i9505 roms. no it will not work on google edition roms (yet, porting it to those kinds of roms will be much easier since its based on touchwiz code, but still a challenge) yes it will work on an unlocked s4 from another carrier with a tmobile sim.

While this is true now....it will not be true forever.
People are trying to crack it and are getting the app to run smoothly and almost have it authenticating with a t mobile account. So progress is being made.
For the people who don't know the problem with just restoring the backed up app is that the app is just the interface for WiFi calling. The actual ability to do WiFi calling is baked into the framework of the stock ROM with various prices hurried all over the place.

I always thought the reason we can't get WiFi calling on any ROM was NOT because of apks but because of .so and lib files that cannot be decompiled.

Oh that's right...the libs weren't just hidden they needed to be modded as well. The ICS WiFi calling only took about a month to hack and port. T mobile got more creative on the jellybean version. Though I don't know why. They still can control authentication of a device and user account on their end. Its not like you can just steal t mobile service by installing WiFi calling.

true. But I give T-Mobile credit. I mean why port something that is exclusive to their phones and devices? It's not like it's taking control of your device like a locked bootloader or something like that. I say if you want WiFi calling then use a stock based ROM. There are hundreds out there plus with all the modding going on I'm sure there 90 percent pa aosp features can be added

I have a Samsung Galaxy 3 on the AT&T network none rooted. Since the 4.3 update I cannot get any tethering applications to work (tried Foxfi and SVTP paid which I had been using for almost a year prior to).
As of 4.3 I keep getting the pop up "To enable mobile hotspot on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611" message any time I try to enable a mobile hotspot application.
So my question is, has anyone found a good workaround without rooting? If root will be mandatory can someone suggest an idiots guide to rooting? Because I have zero experience with rooting an android device.
Thanks in advance.
You're not alone. I'm having the same issue. I can't root because my company pays for the phone and they use Mobile Iron to push email, calendar, etc.. Hoping someone comes up with a nice work around that PDANet / FoxFi can leverage to get the wifi hotspot working again. In the mean time, using the Bluetooth tethering option on PDANet seems to still be working..

You assume all responsibility of anything that may or may not happen by using the information in this post. Use the information carefully.
I contacted enewman17 and inquired about the link below \/ \/ \/ he advised me that it should be flashable via custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) to any AT&T I747 on 4.3 regardless of rom or kernel and possibly without root. He also said he thinks it may work on the I747M also.
If any I747M users flash it and are successful or unsuccessful please let me know so I can post whether this is effective for that as well.
I don't know if you can use this or not, I am rooted and have a custom stockish rom and kernel. I couldn't get anything else to work then I found tether hack with bluetooth from enewman17 flashed it via custom recovery and my native tethering now works without questioning whether I pay my carrier for tethering services or not.
You should research where this can be used and how to use it before doing anything I found it in one of the threads I was getting a rom from and took a chance by flashing it over my current rom. It worked but I'm not on stock anything.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll give it a try. I was trying to avoid rooting simply due to my ignorance about the process so I appreciate any and all suggestions.

I tried the Bluetooth hack with PDA and while it worked it was painfully slow (almost dial-up slow to be honest), how is it working for you? Maybe I needed to fiddle with the settings differently?
I tether to a TF700 (soon to be a Note 2014 edition if Santa is listening).

It isn't nearly as fast as a wifi hotspot connection, but it isn't horrible for surfing, reading forums, etc.. Certainly can't stream movies on it. Attached you can see my Ookla results..

I'll have to download it again and adjust some settings, I was getting barely 1/10th of that on Ooklah/speedtest.
That gives me some hope though, I really just want something I can fiddle on the web with on my tablet while out for lunch etc.
Thanks again!
