[Q] Smart stay - yay or nay - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

so I have just recently purchased my note8 and Im still trying to get the hang of it. I notice that I frequently qet message saying that the smart stay can't detect my eyes.
I also notice that I rarely see the eye icon lights up (I assume its there to indicate that the feature is active).and one time, the screen went blank just right after the eye lit up.
maybe, speaking from my limited exp, just maybe, the smart stay works better on devices with smaller display as the variance of the eyes/ face orientation will be much smaller compared to on an 8"device.
While I understand the benefits, the question is how many of you find this feature reliable on this tablet? pls feel free to share your experience on how it performs on smaller devices.
Im thinking I might as well turn it off in exchange for some extra battery life.
thanks / Luke

Can't share any experience using this feature as turning it off was the very first thing I did after purchasing my device
I think the drain should be way too high since it uses the front camera all the time, doesn't it? Anyway, it happens maybe once a week that the display turns off when I'm actually looking at it - at most. And just before the display turning off it dims the screen, so there is still some time to react..

I find it doesn't work as well in the dark as my GS3 did under earlier firmware and I do often get the icon. But smart stay does work well for me. Unless I'm laying down on my side.

It checks every 15 seconds of inactivity to see if you're still looking at the screen. If you're not according to your front camera, it'll dim/shut the screen.

Mine only checks a few seconds before the screen is set to time out. Ie. If the screen is set to stay on for 2 minutes, it will check at about 1:50 of inactivity.
I kind of like it except, as posted above, it can be a little iffy in low light.

I really think it is almost completely useless and simply a waste of battery. I've also disabled lock screen. Nobody touches this tablet but me. When I use it I want it instant on, and when I'm done I turn the screen off myself. I hate my devices trying to decide for themselves when to switch off, and first thing I always TAKE THE POWER BACK!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. l have been trying it off and on but at the end I would have to agree that it doesn't work for me. I cant say how much power saving I get by turning it off but it feels good to know that some resources are relieved for something else.

I use it on my note 2 (8 months now) and note 8.... it doesn't burn much battery.... it works better on the note 2 because your face is exactly straight on the camera... On the tablet.. Usually we hold it slightly at an angle.. So the camera sometimes misses off

yeah I like it too. I usually only use it when reading on the kobo app but it does come in handy.

I really like it but not it is not as good on the note 8 as it is one the other Samsung galaxy devices I have

After reading this topic, I charged my Note 2 and disabled this feature to try to get more bvattery life.
The difference is like night and day. The screen consumes a lot less power (according to the JB's Battery widget) and the battery lasts much longer.

i've never used this on any of my devices. i always seem to have this odd habit of turning off electronics when i'm not using them

A big NAY for me, I just haven't been able to get it to work even a single time, keep getting the "Smart stay cannot detect your Eyes" message again.
Is it that bad, even in other device like the S3 or S4? S4 has so many features(like the smart pause based on it, makes me think I can't use it properly), any tips how to better the usability(other than the usual ones given by Samsung)?

Smart Stay on the GN. Possible?

So the Galaxy S3 will soon be available, and by far my favorite feature is the Smart Stay that tracks your eyes to keep the screen on as long as you continue to stare at it.
Now, we all know that ICS has built in face recognition via the face unlock, and obviously it has the capability to track your eye movement so that way it knows when you're blinking. I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung is is just re-using that capability for the Smart Stay, the question is whether this can be implemented on the Galaxy Nexus without any significant performance hits.
You basically have to figure that the front facing camera is close to being always on as soon as you turn on the screen, which begs the question of what sort of processing power it would take to keep that service constantly running in the background. Obviously the S3 isn't going to have any problems managing that thanks to its brand new processor, but the Nexus is now almost a year behind in terms of processor hardware.
What do you guys think? Would you still use it if it made a significant impact on the battery life or general performance of the OS? Any developers care to comment on the feasibility of implementing it on the Nexus?
no i wouldnt use it. it would cause a strain in the battery life. if it could be activated for CERTAIN apps like dice player, youtube etc etc i might consider it.

Well, I already use Tasker to adjust the screen timeout to different values for each of my apps. And of course, most video players will keep the screen on by default while a video is playing.
The point of this is to eliminate the need to manually set the timeouts for 99% of your apps. There are only a few that you're going to want to keep the screen on indefinitely, but for the rest it might actually yield better power savings, because then instead of a default 30 second timeout the screen might end up turning off more quickly and frequently, negating the power loss from keeping the FFC on.
Basically Smart Stay is doing for your screen what stock Android and most ARM processors already do for background apps and your CPU cycles. Anything that's not in focus gets turned off or gets lower priority, in turn leading to massive battery savings over the traditional "always on" approach with old x86 processors.
I too would really like to see this ripped from the GSIII rom to play around with. I doubt it would save a measurable amount of battery life but its possible and I love playing with new features.
any one with SMART STAY APK FOR GN
No significant battery drain increase
In fact, the front facing camera is not always on. It just turns on and checks your face presence at the very last moment just before the screen timer runs out. So, if your face is detected, then the timer is reset and the camera goes standby till next check, else - the screen goes off.
Turning on camera for a very short period will not affect battery.
I would love to have this feature on my GNex too.

It is not an apk. It is a feature built into the framework of Touchwiz. It would take some major hacking to get it to work on our cameras and AOSP for that matter. I'm not saying it won't be done, but it will not be as easy as just installing an apk. The eye icon showing that it is on is in a place that is reserved for system stuff(right half of the notification bar). I really want this too and think it is a great feature. You have no idea how many times I have been reading blogs and/or certain webpages and the screen starts to dim and I have to hurry up and finish reading or touch the screen which interrupts my reading. It is an easy task, but this smart stay feature just makes so much sense to me.
Hopefully it'll be a built in Android feature on Jelly Bean!
I wonder if this works well in low light situations, like reading in bed.

I doubt it will. But then again, that's useful feature. Hope, it'll become de-facto for future Android releases, so that all coming flagship smartphones, including nexus line, will have it just right out-of-the-box.

From Cyanogen (Steve) on his Google Plus page of him describing the SGS3:
2. Smart Stay. Probably my favorite feature. When the phone is about to time out and turn off the display while you are reading, the camera will snap a picture (with zero shutter lag) and do a face-detect. If it finds a face, it stays awake. It works brilliantly.
I've found Screebl Pro to be perfect for keeping the screen on while i am using the phone.
Well worth the money.

[Q] Will I see screen burn-in using phone as GPS?

I'm getting ready to take a ~3 hour trip in a couple days and was considering using my phone as a GPS. My question is will I see any screen burn on my GNex using it as a GPS for 3 straight hours? I know screen burn is a problem with this phone so I'm inclined to believe I will, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Surprisingly enough, searching this topic doesn't return any results. Maybe my google-fu is rusty..........lol
How many hours have the nav buttons been displayed? Longer than 3 hours? Yes. I don't think you'll have any problems

That's true, but it usually isn't 3 consecutive hours. That was what concerned me more, not the total time but the total consecutive time. I wasn't sure if that made a difference in how screen burn happens. Thanks for the reply, though.
I just came back from a 1600 km journey, and used my galaxy nexus for navigation for most of the trip. Yes, 3 hours plus will cause burn in, but my solution to this is to turn off the screen as the voice commands still work with the screen off. You can turn on the screen anytime if there is a complicated section.
Hope this helps.
You can indeed turn the screen off, or you can even flash a rom or mod that allows for hiding the navigation buttons for the duration of your trip.

OK. That's probably what I'll end up doing. The post below yours suggests turning off navbar icons during the trip. Was it just the home, back and recent apps buttons that burned into yours or is it part of the GPS interface that burns too? I plan to use Google Maps for the trip, in case it makes a difference. I like the visual of the maps better than the audio commands, but I also like my screen without burn-in. I've been lucky so far so I don't want to mess it up now. lol
Thanks for the helpful replies!!

[Q] Fuzzy display - eye strain from Note II

So I just received my phone today and as I'm getting it all setup my vision gets blurry, my head feels light, and I start to get dizzy. The only time I've experienced this before was when I tried to use some 22" LCD monitors that weren't setup/calibrated properly. I put the phone down for a while to see if I felt better and sure enough I did. When I picked it back up to start using it again, all of the symptoms came back.
Has anyone else out there experienced this using the GNII? I really like the phone except for how it makes me feel, and obviously I'm not going to continue to use it if it keeps doing that. I'm wondering if I may have a bad phone.
I dont have any of that. But you might want to go into the display settings and play around with the screen modes
Setting it to natural might help
Or you might wanna go to a neurologist to get checked for epilepsy
Last time I experienced that was when I upgraded from Atari to Nintendo... Now I feel dizzy when not using an LCD display...

SurfaceFlinger

So while i was checking around trying to find battery saving info i ran across this ....
http://jsharkey.org/blog/2010/07/01/android-surfaceflinger-tricks-for-fun-and-profit/
It's interesting in the fact that it would be nice to possibly have a toggle to switch these on or off when you are doing things not requiring the full screen colors. Like reading emails, doing web searches or reading forums (most of my screen on-time) Some of the colors would be too hard to look at but some do not look so bad. plus it may almost double the battery life - - heck even if i got 14 hours with regular use then switched onto this some of the time i could add another 7-10 hours of battery time... could be very usefull when not near a power source or during storm events and power loss.
So who here is savy enough to make the app and would it work on any rom or have to be rom specific?
There is an app called galactic night in the market. Does what you described.

THANKS. - - going to fully charge and try it out. try to match up a typical day using it vs not using it.
just downloaded. the red screen isnt as bad to look at as i thought it would be (It almost looks like an orange theme). this will be interesting to see if it will increase battery by as much as almost double. If i get 24 hrs now - i'd be pushing 48 hours on a standard battery. That would be INSANE.
cm7 and/or cm9 had this feature built into it.
Some of the filtering doesn't stick when opening some apps. I found some other threads on it and it's a known issue on US S3's. There must be a way around it though to get the red filter to stick. I'm going to message the app developer. So far it is decumbent saving a lot of battery. Not sure I'd use it all the time, but it would be a huge benefit if out camping or if stuck without power or away from it all day.

My observations after a week with the N3...

I have been in the market for a new phone for a bit and paying hundreds of dollars for a phone is not my idea of a good time. Long story short, I got tired like many before me of waiting for the Nexus 5 to drop so I picked up the Note 3 @ TMO. Needless to say, I'm really lovin this device...
Now for the twist. I also ordered a Nexus 5 which is due here on the 5th. With the difference in cost, I'm really on the fence. I have put the N3 through its paces and I noticed a few things that perhaps justify the additional $300 for the N3.
Pluses:
User experience: The size and quality of the display is the main reason for this (that and the fact that the phone is NOT huge at all) Playing games, messaging and entertainment is all enjoyable for a change. Oh, and now remote desktop is finally usable without all the resizing and scrolling.
Battery: Nuff said.
Camera: I shoot with a DSLR usually so this doesn't matter as much to me. Turn off the auto mode and tune it a little like normal and it captures great pics. Also, I have found that the no dedicated camera button complaint doesn't hold water as you can map the shutter to the volume key. Voila, dedicated camera button.
Memory: 3GB is a lot... especially if I ball park the figures and think 1GB system, 2 GB user. And with mem management improvement getting even better with 4.4 on the horizon, it all upside here. The amount of concurrently running apps with little to no stutter on switching is ridiculous.
USB 3.0: Faster Charging and data transfer is such a plus... now I don't have to take the SD card out to get decent transfer speeds.
Main complaint...
GPS: Maybe its a software issue, but it takes forever for this thing to get a lock. And when it does, it seems to give me a "general" location until it has a minute to warm up and then it gets serious. And keeping a lock for consistent tracking seems intermittent as well. This is huge for me because I use GPS all the time (yelp, checking traffic, Golf Logix, hiking GPS, etc.) and it sometimes makes using location relevant apps a chore, especially because I know it's not a slow data connection.
Now, its true that the Nexus 5 will give me most of this, but the major drawback is the battery. (no duh) So is the rest of what I do get with the Note 3 worth the extra $300, especially when that $300 can go towards getting me the next hot sh*t ? I'm not sure... the GPS thing is super annoying. I'm hoping a software fix comes for this eventually.
I plan to use the Nexus for a few days to get some time in on it, but I think I may suck up the GPS issue for more mature hardware.
No GPS problems here. Occasionally some hiccups navigating but no problems really. The nexus 5 hardware is basically the same. But that micro SD slot puts it over the top for me.

Just switched and got mine last night, so I haven't tested GPS yet. But after having a Note 2 for awhile, I don't want to go to a smaller phone like the Nexus 5. And I'm used to having great battery life, something the Nexus 5 doesn't have.

Same boat here. Have really come to enjoy the N3. I love the size and feel of the back. It's a joy to use. No GPS issues for me. With the Nexus 5 I'm losing SD Card and Touchwiz and Spen. And I can't yet determine what I'm gaining except maybe a little more pocketability. It'll be interesting to compare them, but I think I already decided to send the Nexus 5 back. Not sure I want to waste too much time setting it all up. One thing that would be a plus is a little more siri like voice behavior, that would be cool, but I've come to really like touchwiz, soooo...
Be interested to hear your thoughts when you get yours as well.
The only wife issues I have had is that it's range is maybe a little shorter (within a few feet)... but nothing major. As for general reception, I am coming from Sprint, so almost anything is better.

If she really loves you then size shouldn't matter.
I don't have wifi issue either but it does tell me my wifi is unreliable but I'm still connected and able to surf. GPS seems about the same as my s4 which isnt super quick but not too slow.
In the same situation too. Have a Note 3 in hand and Nexus 5 in the mail. The GN3 has the best screen on a phone bar none and the battery life is phenomenal even with TW bloat bogging it down.
My main reservation is living with the paltry 32GB in the N5. It's enough for a bit of music and not much else. And the batt life is a liability. I really hope the screen's at least 90% as good as my S4, if not then it's going on ebay.
OTOH this sh*tty TouchWiz is driving me nuts, if CM doesn't make an appearance soon then somebody's gonna get rickrolled.
The N5 is putting up a hell of a fight in hand... All of a sudden I get the feeling a middle weight could win a majority decision over a heavy weight.

After 1/2 day with the N5, it's going back. N3 for me. It's a beautiful device and the screen is sharp as hell. But the lack of physical buttons means they have to use screen space on the bottom for the nav buttons and then part of the screen on top for the 3 dots for the apps settings menu. So you have a big chunk of screen space gone. It's a 5" screen but feels like a 4" screen because of the layout. In the email app it seems like the body doesn't start until 1/2 way down the screen due to the header information. Kinda looks like a mess compared to the N3.
Google voice commands are pretty slick on it. "Navigate Home" finally works, instead of trying to route me to Home Depot like my N3 does
At the end of the day the usable screen space is just too small and now I'm spoiled, combine that with the Micro SD slot and great battery life and I think the Note 3 is a winner.
Have Note 3, love it, no complaints. I'm probably going to get the N5 in a few months after the hype dies down and I have more cash to spend. I've had every Nexus phone and they're fun to play around with. I'll still be keeping my Note as my daily driver, the N5 will be just for fun.
I also have some Gps problems. It's slow to connect and it looses signal if there is a single cloud in the sky.. Seems like software problem. This is much worse than my note 2 or GS3.
Sent from my Note 3
96GB of storage is no comparison. Not to mention the battery is removable.
Speakerphone is loud and clear and I have no complaint.
