Try to root and install a nice ROM for yourself to overcome this problem.

If you could share the screen shot that will be helpful.
I'm also having same problem and currently I'm on Stock ROM.
For past almost 20 days, I'm neither receiving SMS nor able to send any SMS.
Initially I though the problem is with sender's Service Provider but as soon as put SIM Card in my Galaxy S2 I start receiving SMSes and also able to send SMS.
Then I called my Service Provider but they also confirm that issue is not at their end and while searching this forum I came across this thread and now I'm also feeling that there might be an issue with Note2 itself.

I'd say it's a network problem, but if they say it, s not...do a factory wipe through recovery and try.

Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.

Hi, I bought One X approximately a month back, the phone is awesome. But the issue that suddenly started to occur was yesterday when I tried to open up one of my messages, but the screen wont open, instead when I try to open up any specific conversation tab, it keeps on loading and won't show any messages at all from that person. Also after it showed this problem, I am unable to read new texts and even delete any of my texts (it sort of hangs) whereas the other phone features work clearly.
Did a factory reset, restored the backup but still no change. Kindly help me as to what should I do.
THanks!!
I ended up rooting into a custom rom hehe.
Are you rooted?

Ironically it's restoring the backup that is probably why the problem is back. Because you restored the problem too!
Open up the Messaging in 'Manage Applications' and clear cache and data. You'll loose all of your received SMS messages but at least you'll be able to use Messaging again.
If it persists ring your provider and get them to send through your SMS message center settings again.

stock, but rooted.
What does the exact message say when you try to send it?
Have you called your phone network yet to see if its a problem on their end?

edit: just tried to send one again to check the message, the exact error message i get is: "Can't send message right now. There are too many unsent multimedia messages"
I called AT&T and they said they didnt know, everything looks fine and for me to call tech support.
but i have never had luck with any cell phone tech support, so decided to come here first.

Idk she said she deleted all conversations and tryed sending again with the same results. I got it to work the other day by forwarding the Kmart then deleting the one that wasn't sending, worked for a couple days then started with the error msg again.
She's on straight talk, running wicked sensations rom. It will be a few days till I see her and have 5he chance to try to figure out what's going on.

Has she tried a different MMS app ?
I had an issue with sending an MMS the other day, didn't get an error message though just wouldn't send. It turned out to be adblock plus. So if she has an adblocker on her phone try deleting it and restarting the phone.

I'll assume you aren't married and haven't learned how to smile and nood lol
There's got to be a way to make it look pink haha.
One possibility is to remove the secmms.apk reboot and then pull it from the zip and push it to system again, fix permissions, wipe cache, reboot. Maybe that will clear any lingering issues.

Need a little over a year and so is it right for me to I suppose people who get this error just can't send mms anymore, unless reverting with Odin to a completely stock ROM? Haha
Here's what worked for me. Have a Xiomi Redmi Note 3 Pro running latest MIUI developer ROM 7.3.23 and Android 6.0.1 on Rogers network in Canada
Couldnt figure out why I was getting this message only on this phone. My other phones with same SIM card had no issues (Sony Xperia Z Ultra, HTC M8).
Was about to do a factory reset when I came upon an old post. I
1) download the app "History Eraser" from the Play Store
2) open the app and make sure "clear all apps cache" box is CHECKED
3) next, scroll down SMS/MMS section and check boxes "SMS/MMS Draft" and "Failed SMS/MMS"
should delete any messages/other stuff you don't need and is clogging up your system.
Am able to send pics once more using the Xiomi. Good luck!
yep that was the fix for me.
Btw, 3rd party apps wont work on my Xiaomi phone to replace the existing messaging app for SMS and MMS. When I used Facebook messenger I could not send MMS and when I reverted back to the xiaomi messaging app all those attempted to send MMS in facebook messenger were put into the messaging app and I had to go through all my contacts and delete the MMS as they said 'Sending'. Once I removed all the MMS that had not sent it then worked properly again. What a PITA! if your messages aren't that important just delete every chat in your messaging app also works.
Saved me!

I too was about to do a factory reset on my Mate 9....when I stumbled on your text. Apparently the default SMS/MMS program "sees" failed sends in all other messaging apps (Skype? Viber" Google Voice) because I had ZERO failed messages in the default program. HISTORY ERASER stopped me from pulling the last remaining hairs on my head. Thanks.
I'm having an issue with my SMS where after a while they will sit in my inbox trying to send but not actually send or fail. I physically have to reboot the phone for them then to send. S-off, rooted running ARHD 10.2. I'm not sure if it's more network related or handset related as I can receive and everything else works solidly.
Anyone else experienced this?

I had an issue with sms notifications after I installed a custom rom. Then learned that my problem comes from the hearbeat interval settings. I think my carrier uses a custom value (5min is default) and since I changed the rom, their settings have not been pushed to my phone.
Testing several things I came across this app. It will not hurt to try it:
Install an app called "pnf push notification fixer". Is free from store.
Set the heartbeat mobile interval to 3 minutes.
Reboot.
Make sure the value did not change itself
Monitor and see if the problem stays the same.
This maintains the connection alive for me.
Have you checked when you experience the issue if the sms carrier center number removes or changes?
On the dialer press *#*#4636#*#*
Select phone info
Scroll down to smsc and hit refresh. Note the number when working. When it stops, repeat the process and check if the number is diff or was removed. You can also hardcode one there.

I had a bit of both. The cellphone was not maitaining the network alive fast enough.
I have the same issue.
I've tried what jmoneste wrote, but the problem still persist. SMS keep failing. Everytime I want a message to be sent I have to activate airplane mode and then desactivate en resend the SMS. It's so annoying.
This problems comes from stock rom and now I'm using the Viper One ROM but it still fails.

Same thing just started happening to me tonight.
I turned my tab off last night, charged it, turned it on about 30 minutes ago, and started getting that message. Happens every 4.5 seconds. I cant get anything done. I cant get to messages via the App Manager to stop it, either. Lookout Premium says my tab is good to go. I've never used Messaging on this tab before so I have no idea what the deal is all of a sudden.
Device is a two month old unrooted SM-P607T running stock 4.4.2.
Mine has done 2 different times. The first time I rebooted and then went into app manager and cleared the cache and force closed it. The second time which was just the other day, I did the reverse of it. I went through the settings via the pull down and getting to it that way. Yes, my tablet is rooted so it happens on unrooted and rooted tablets. If you can't get into settings to clear the cache and force stop it, then I don't know how else to help but you can try it the ways I did it.
Figured it out, for me at least.
I opened messages and found an unread text from some random email address. It took me a few tries to click the message to be able to read it, what with Messaging stopping every 4.5 seconds exactly, but once the message was read, the error stopped happening.
Now that I can get into the App Manager, when I click on Messages, my only option is to stop it. No cache to be cleared, apparently.

Come to think of it, the last time mine did it, I had a text from some email address I didn't know. Looked like a spam text message. Probably some scam going around. I marked it as a spam message and deleted it. So beware of texts coming from email addresses instead of actual numbers.
