Hi, I bought One X approximately a month back, the phone is awesome. But the issue that suddenly started to occur was yesterday when I tried to open up one of my messages, but the screen wont open, instead when I try to open up any specific conversation tab, it keeps on loading and won't show any messages at all from that person. Also after it showed this problem, I am unable to read new texts and even delete any of my texts (it sort of hangs) whereas the other phone features work clearly.
Did a factory reset, restored the backup but still no change. Kindly help me as to what should I do.
THanks!!
I ended up rooting into a custom rom hehe.
Are you rooted?

Ironically it's restoring the backup that is probably why the problem is back. Because you restored the problem too!
Open up the Messaging in 'Manage Applications' and clear cache and data. You'll loose all of your received SMS messages but at least you'll be able to use Messaging again.
If it persists ring your provider and get them to send through your SMS message center settings again.

Try to use go sms or other 3rd party messaging app... I think you've reach the maximum capacity of stock messaging...

This just happened this morning and is a very big problem for me as I message a lot. I got a force close a few hours ago after opening the stock messages app, upon relaunching it all my messages were gone. I luckily had back ups, although I had not run it for about 2 - 3 weeks, so all messages from that time scale are now gone. So I restored what I had using SMS Backup & Restore (which I have now set to auto backup) I sent one SMS before the app force closed again, once again losing all my messages, but this time when I hit 'Compose Message' the app force closes, it does this every time I hit that button. As I said this is a huge problem for me, I'm currently running a stock 2.2 ROM from Vodafone, I have yet to root it.
On a side note, I did find another thread with people that had lost their all their SMS messages, but nobody reported continually force closing, and there weren't any fixes/answers in that thread which is why I created a new one.
EDIT: I had tried restarting the phone a few times which didn't help, but decided to pull the battery this time which seems to have done the trick. Currently restoring my SMS messages atm. I will update this if it happens again. But would still like to know the cause of this, as it seems I am not the only one affected.
Quite often (few times per day) when typing SMS, the keyboard stops responding for a few seconds then goes insane and starts typing random letters by itself, even sometimes holds backspace itself and deletes the whole message. I have to leave it alone for a few minutes/force close because otherwise it keeps on doing it. This only happens when typing SMS, no other app/activity is affected.
I have tried calibration reset which didnt work, and have also reduced the number of messages per thread from 100 to 30 which also hasnt worked. This is very frustrating, as sending SMS sometimes takes more than twice as long.
The phone has not always done this, just the last few months.
Running Froyo build 2.29.405.5 (latest one I believe)
Any solutions?
Has anyone else had this issue?
Well, you might first backup your messages, contacts and any other personal data using your favorite app (sms backup and restore on the market, for sms, and for contacts just sync them using your gmail account - titanium back-up for the rest - as suggestions), then do a reset to factory defaults.
Another solution would be to root then flash different roms, of course
or maybe try diffrent keyboard like htc_ime mod and change sms app to a 3rd party one (handcent or GOsms) and see if problem persists or wheter its keyboard or appliaction related

This is a last resort if all else fails.

The problem isn't keyboard related. I have tried Handcent which did not have the issue, but (suprisingly) I didn't get along with it, it was far slower than the stock HTC messaging so I switched back and stomached the issue I'm having. What is htc_ime?

I believe there is a program called GO SMS, or something similar, may be worth a shot
So i rooted my phone last night and before doing so i used sms backup restore to back up all my texts. Once i got rooted, i attempted to restore my SMS messages. The process got interrupted twice, then i ran it a third time and it finished when i woke up. After everything was said and done i wasn't able to open or delete any messages. Trying to open any thread caused my message app to freeze. i had 29000 messages. I use the stock ICS messaging app. Rooted with AOKP toro milestone 3
Anybody had issues like this? I'd really like to get my messages back! halp!
I had a similar issue when using CM7 on my OG Droid. I hadn't backed up my messages using any application so I manually moved the sqlite database from the nandroid backup I had made. Upon moving the messages Handsent stopped working completely and the default messaging app would 'freeze'.
My best guess at that time (I didn't research the issue at all, so if I'm wrong please correct me) was that the messages are indexed/cached in some form and when I moved the messages the index/cache did not come with it. IIRC the issue corrected itself after I left the messaging application open/idle for some time. This idle time would have allowed the messaging application to reindex/cache the messages and function as anticipated.
Again, this is complete conjecture so if I'm completely off base do not be surprised...
Cool thank you for the reply. What i think i am going to try is backup my ROM, then right before i go to bed i'll try to run the restore process again. I'm really hoping the whole issue is that i accidentally cancelled the process two times before. If this doesn't work i'll try opened the messaging app and letting it sit for a while to 'sync' or whatever it would be called.
Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.

Hiya.
I have a problem with sms. Me and my gf have sent several thousand sms between each other, and yesterday I noticed that I can't access our sms. It just says "loading" for a very long time.
I can't even delete them, nothing happens when I do that.
Any solutions? I don't really want to reinstall the whole phone.

I would try getting a third-party SMS app, to see if you can view them on that such as GOSMS.
If you can, try to delete them using that, and then go back to the stock SMS tosee if that helps, then you can delete the third-party app, it is just so you can use the SMS functions as you explain you cannot even delete them
Hope this helps.
Hey,
i think you have to restore your phone to default.
Normally your SD-Card get not touched by this process.

I managed to solve the problem by installing third party sms app. Thanks for the tip
There were around 4850 sms. I don't know why this happened though, did I hit the limit or something?

Android has a native limit of about 5000 SMS I believe. I had this same problem and if left long enough (hours) it would finally load but required that same waiting period each time I opened the SMS app. It was only one conversation that had a ton of texts but it still froze the whole app.
I installed SMS Backup and Restore + (its free) and it backs up all SMS and MMS to my gmail then deleted the conversation. If you go into the messages app into the menu (possibly advanced menu, can't recall) you can change the limit and android will just auto delete anything over the limit you set.
I think I set it for around 3000 SMS and 200 MMS and its been working fine since.
