[Q] Lost all SMS messages + Messages app continually force closes - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This just happened this morning and is a very big problem for me as I message a lot. I got a force close a few hours ago after opening the stock messages app, upon relaunching it all my messages were gone. I luckily had back ups, although I had not run it for about 2 - 3 weeks, so all messages from that time scale are now gone. So I restored what I had using SMS Backup & Restore (which I have now set to auto backup) I sent one SMS before the app force closed again, once again losing all my messages, but this time when I hit 'Compose Message' the app force closes, it does this every time I hit that button. As I said this is a huge problem for me, I'm currently running a stock 2.2 ROM from Vodafone, I have yet to root it.
On a side note, I did find another thread with people that had lost their all their SMS messages, but nobody reported continually force closing, and there weren't any fixes/answers in that thread which is why I created a new one.
EDIT: I had tried restarting the phone a few times which didn't help, but decided to pull the battery this time which seems to have done the trick. Currently restoring my SMS messages atm. I will update this if it happens again. But would still like to know the cause of this, as it seems I am not the only one affected.

SMS backup/restore issues

So i rooted my phone last night and before doing so i used sms backup restore to back up all my texts. Once i got rooted, i attempted to restore my SMS messages. The process got interrupted twice, then i ran it a third time and it finished when i woke up. After everything was said and done i wasn't able to open or delete any messages. Trying to open any thread caused my message app to freeze. i had 29000 messages. I use the stock ICS messaging app. Rooted with AOKP toro milestone 3
Anybody had issues like this? I'd really like to get my messages back! halp!
I had a similar issue when using CM7 on my OG Droid. I hadn't backed up my messages using any application so I manually moved the sqlite database from the nandroid backup I had made. Upon moving the messages Handsent stopped working completely and the default messaging app would 'freeze'.
My best guess at that time (I didn't research the issue at all, so if I'm wrong please correct me) was that the messages are indexed/cached in some form and when I moved the messages the index/cache did not come with it. IIRC the issue corrected itself after I left the messaging application open/idle for some time. This idle time would have allowed the messaging application to reindex/cache the messages and function as anticipated.
Again, this is complete conjecture so if I'm completely off base do not be surprised...
Cool thank you for the reply. What i think i am going to try is backup my ROM, then right before i go to bed i'll try to run the restore process again. I'm really hoping the whole issue is that i accidentally cancelled the process two times before. If this doesn't work i'll try opened the messaging app and letting it sit for a while to 'sync' or whatever it would be called.

[Q] text message notifications but received

I was deleting a 'thread' of text messages and I received 2 while the phone was taking its time deleting. I never viewed the text messages and I keep getting notifications!
When I get 1 text message it notifies me that I have 3. 2 were from the other day when I was deleting. It is like they are stuck in queue but my phone can't retreive them. I hope this makes sense.
I have the droid incredible with jermaine151 stock+ rom.
Is there a way to hook up to the pc and get into the text message queue and remove these that are stuck? Any ideas? I have tried re-installing the rom, the texts I got before I 'restored' using titanium backup didn't have the message! But after the restore, the problem came back...

Probably the only way would be to go to Menu - Settings - Applications - Manage applications, find the messaging app on the list, click on it and then clear the apps data. This should work, but it will also delete all of your other saved texts, and the messaging aps saved settings.
still working on it
Hi! Thanks for the input. I did that and I am still getting the notifications. I just went through deleted all old backups in titanium and made a new titanium backup excluding anything that said sms or mms. I am hoping this will eliminate the notifications.
I will keep updating. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.
resolved
I got it fixed! Here are the steps I took.
To be clear on what went down: I was deleting many text messages from multiple people... while the phone was thinking and doing its thing, I received 2 text messages but they got deleted with the rest!... I would receive notifications for those texts meanwhile they were deleted... It was like they were stuck in limbo but the phone didn't know that and would keep scrolling them in the status bar as if they were new... I couldn't get rid of the notifications. I made a titanium backup, factory wipe, but when the data was restored, the notifications returned too.
I noticed the texts were attached to the contact that sent them.
I made sure I had the most recent copies of titanium backups saved onto the computer.
I deleted that contact from my phone.
I deleted all titanium backups on the phone and created a new one but took caution to make sure that mms/sms items were not going in the batch(there were 3 total I think plus the widget just to be safe).
Then did the factory wipe and re-installed the jermaine151 rom again. When I restored the data and apps this time, my messages were clear! No notifications! Re-installed the contact too into the phone.

Too many SMS now messages won't work!

Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.

[Q] Messaging Hangs!

Hi, I bought One X approximately a month back, the phone is awesome. But the issue that suddenly started to occur was yesterday when I tried to open up one of my messages, but the screen wont open, instead when I try to open up any specific conversation tab, it keeps on loading and won't show any messages at all from that person. Also after it showed this problem, I am unable to read new texts and even delete any of my texts (it sort of hangs) whereas the other phone features work clearly.
Did a factory reset, restored the backup but still no change. Kindly help me as to what should I do.
THanks!!
I ended up rooting into a custom rom hehe.
Are you rooted?

Ironically it's restoring the backup that is probably why the problem is back. Because you restored the problem too!
Open up the Messaging in 'Manage Applications' and clear cache and data. You'll loose all of your received SMS messages but at least you'll be able to use Messaging again.
If it persists ring your provider and get them to send through your SMS message center settings again.

Problems with Messages in Official Pie

On the official 9.0 stock release, and over the past few days I've started having issues with Android Messages randomly coming up with force close messages. It also will randomly not send messages and give me the "retry" error, and not download other MMS messages until I go in and hit the download button.
I haven't flashed anything new or changed any APN settings. I also have tried clearing Data & Cache for Android Messages and that didn't fix it either.
Anyone else having issues, or have any ideas on how to fix this?

I would try doing a data factory reset. Hopefully that fixes your issue...
Did you do an OTA update to Pie by chance from Oreo?
I have been having the same issue. It will "freeze" up and the messages sent out are delayed. Everything seems to work still but the app lags up and gives me the Force Close message.

I have also been seeing these messages. The most common and annoying for me is that messages don't send right away at times. And almost seems like you have to wait inside Messages until the text is fully sent before leaving or you aren't guaranteed it will go thru. Most concerning is that you won't really be notified that a text didn't go thru until you go back to that particular thread in Messages. I have also experienced the App Not Responding - Wait, Force Close, etc...which I honestly had never seen before in Messages until the PIE update (I did a Full Factory Flash while saving data). The text messages not being sent has bitten me twice on time sensitive messages I was trying to send and which I assumed went through.
I have been having this issue for months, pre-Pie. Upon downloading Pie (OTA) and the Messages issue not being fixed, I tried Textra. I stopped getting the error in Messages, but Textra then worked its way up to 17GB of hard drive storage and was consistently the largest battery hog on my phone (shouldn't be more than 3-4GB based on what it required before installing Textra) so Textra had to go. I would love to know if anyone figures out how to get Messages working normally again.
I also am having all of these problems with Android Pie on my Pixel XL on Verizon. Seems like whenever I exit out of the messages app when I send a message, it ends up not sending. Could that be because of the new battery optimization feature where more apps are being "shut off" in the background more than they used to? And has anyone had luck fixing this issue by doing a factory reset?

Why not just use a different messaging app? I use Pulse, have been for a year now. It stores not only your SMS but MMS automatically, and like Google's messaging app has an extension to work with your browser on your PC.
Problem still exists
Exact same issue here. I was wondering if it was the operating system or Verizon.
