[solved] S-off through h-boot? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I recently got a HTC desire HD. I unlocked the bootloader through HTC dev and then put on CWM. After I loaded on a custom rom it now only boots to the HTC screen. After searching around I figured that the problem is that I don't have S-Off. I have searched around to see how to get S-Off but all methods seem to require a working rom. I can however boot into Hboot successfully. Is there any way to get S-Off on the DHD using only hboot; and would this actually solve my problem?
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks.

The problem is not that you don't have S-Off. The problem is that you didn't flash the boot.img of the ROM zip from fastboot.

Thanks for the quick response, I'll try that now.

Yep it works fine now, thanks for the help.

How to S-off after HTCDev Unlock?

Hi everyone,
I want to S-off my device again, so I don't need to reflash the Boot.img of every custom rom over and over again.
I've tried to flash my device with the DHD Stock 1.32 Rom to use jkoljo's method for S-off'ing my device.
So I put the PD98IMG.zip on my SDcard and let the HBoot flash it. After the reboot I got stuck at HTC Logo and this happens too after flashing PD98IMG.zip's boot.img
So is there another way to S-off my device while I'm HTCDevUnlocked or is it game over for S-off?
I've googled for some time on the net, but I couldn't find a DHD specific result.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, will try it when I got the time
I guess, I need to be on an original rom or a Sense-rom
Do you know how I can flash an original rom from HTC itself? I thought it was like putting P98IMG.zip on the sd and let HBoot find it and flash it.
But after that I got stuck at HTC-logo, and flashing the boot.img doesn't work neither :s
I really don't know how to flash DHD's Froyo rom after (HTCDev) unlocking my device
Run the RUU of the OS you were last on, so if you were on WWE 2.50 run that RUU, or if you were on 3.12 Sense 3.0 then run that, relock the bootloader, and run attn1's Ace Hack Kit, it will automatically do the downgrade for you so you get S-OFF.

So I need to relock it before I can run that RUU?
Ok, I will try it when I have the time to do it.

[Q] Cyanogenmod 10 hboot 1.28 boot loop

Hi guys just some help regarding wanting the new CM 10 rom but it won't let me flash as I have hboot 1.28 and yes I have heard some people haven't made it to work and some have. It is because I used the new Android Revolution HD 1.11 and I know that hboot 1.28 was required so anyways I wanna switch to CM 10 and previously it worked because I had hboot version 1.12. Now when I flash the boot.img given my CM 10 developers it will just keep restarting or stay in the HTC Quietly Brilliant screen. I downloaded a boot image for hboot 1.28 that was in the forums for CM 10 but still no luck. Am I missing something or what. Also a Final question if I put my phone back to the stock RUU which is given by Football will my hboot be restored to the previous version and NOT 1.28. I'm sorry I'm such a noob I haven't checked yet but don't want to waste my time doing it if it doesn't. Thanks a lot of help will be appreciated
HBoot downgrade is not possible unless you have s-off. Older RUU's won't work

I guess the new boot.img you mentioned is this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32486421&postcount=7308
That does work with CM10 and hboot 1.28. Did you erase the cache after you flashed the boot.img? fastboot erase cache

It's unlikely that you have S-OFF, but go into the bootloader screen and the you will see either SHIP S-ON or SHIP S-OFF.
Thanks guys for your help. Man I'm such a nut. And yes fastboot erase cache worked and I have S-ON. Why is it so important for people to have S-OFF can someone explain me. :victory:

Well, for one thing you would just be able to flash the entire ROM including boot.img just by flashing the ROM .zip file from recovery. But with S-ON, recovery is not able to write the boot.img, that can only be done from the bootloader.
Also, if you have S-OFF you can downgrade your hboot. Currently there is a big to do about hboot 1.28, but if you install that and do not have S-OFF you can not go back to a lower numbered hboot.
And people don't agree with the warranty terms of HTC and unlocking, so would like to install custom ROMs and then hide that from HTC when it's convenient (warranty claim).
That's what i was looking for! Finally found it

I had the same problem. Boot.img is not being flashed correctly when you are installing your rom. I found boot.img inside the rom .zip file and just extracted it separately.
Instructions on how to flash boot.img are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752270

Alright, need a little assistance. Plz Read!

I've rooted this HTC Desire HD w/ the Ace Hack Kit. I have CWM installed.
BUT, the bootloader is set to S-ON. How can I turn it to S-OFF?? I can't fastboot flash boot boot.img since no remote is allowed due to S-ON.
Yet, I need to do this to get the phone to boot into a new custom ROM!
Is there a CWM flashable file I can use to do this?
Need some pointers.
NM. A bit more digging and I figured it out.
Needed to use the HDH HBoot Updater by Behtash and then use HTCDev's bootloader unlock.
Flashed the boot.img from my custom rom, then flashed the custom rom from CWM.
All is well But man was I in a pickle for a bit.
If you didn't end up with S-OFF after the AAHK method, it didn't run completely. It either simply downgraded your phone or had an error. Anyway, glad you ended up getting the HTCDEV method to work.

[Q] few questions about s-off

hi guys,
I'm new here, just came from htc one x which doesn't have s-off so there are stuff about s-off which i don't understand,,
first of all in htc one x in order to flash a rom, i had to flash the boot.img via fastboot, is it the same with s-on here?
and about flashing just the kernel with s-on, its though fastboot too?
how does s-off works with flashing firmware and cid?
and if you can explain the advantages s-off gives us?
thanks for the help,
Lior
P.S. i searched the net for over 2 hours and could not find an answer to these quesions..

No you don't have to flash the boot.img anymore the phone does it when you are installing a rom. You can flash a kernel just by uploading the zip to your internal memory and installing it like you would install a rom.
With s-off you can access more system permissions so you can apply mods such as Harman/Kardon speakers. To S-OFF you will need Firewater S-OFF if firewater doesn't work your only choice is using Sunshine S-OFF

HTC Desire - update recovery

Hello!
Some time ago, in 2011 or so, I followed a tutorial and managed to root my HTC Desire Bravo A8181. In fact, I just rooted it and somehow it's still S-ON.
Now the thing is that I want to flash a new recovery ( 5.x.x.x) instead of my 2.5.x.x . I can't find the exact tutorial for this because my phone is not unrooted.
If someone could help me and point me through the exact steps in doing this operation, I'd be grateful. Thank you!

Rooting and S-ON / S-OFF are separate. Rooting is just to do with root access, I assume you used unrevoked for this. S-OFF is fully unlocking the bootloader, and is much more powerful overall.
To flash a different recovery you need to be S-OFF first. Search and user 'revolutionary' for this
Instructions to actually flash the recovery are in that thread linked above.
Whilst it's useful to change to a recent recovery, the main benefit of S-OFF is actually to change hboot so you can increase the Desire's actual internal memory.
Thank you!
So, if I switch to TWRP do I need to S-OFF? I saw I could flash it just like a ROM, from the actual Recovery.
When I try to S-OFF with revolutionary, it seems it won't get past 'Waiting for device...' even though I installed USB Drivers.
Of course I am sure that USB Debugging was enabled.

Were you in fastboot when running revolutionary? If your bootloader is unlocked then u need to flash it via fastboot but if it is s off I think you can do from recovery or the PB99IMG.zip method.
