[Q] T-Mobile S4 & Odin - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Well, I sure hope I didn't jack up my new phone for good.
I was using odin to get OUDHS CWM-Based Recovery 1.0.3.3 working.
I booted the phone into download mode, then connected and waited for my phone to be recognized. I selected the correct tar and hit start.
It failed on the first write section, and I couldn't get it to continue so i turned my phone off and tried to boot into download mode again. Now no matter what I do it gives me the "firmware upgrade failed" message and tells me to connect to Kies, but Kies will not detect my device.
Any ideas?
For reference I was following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260031 to the letter.
I will continue to work on this for awhile.

If you can still get into download mode try using odin to flash a complete firmware made for your specific device and obtained from sammobile.com

If I were you I would forget about KIES and uninstall it along with any other samsung applications and drivers
you have on your computer, then reboot your computer and download only the Samsung USB Drivers.
Once you have the latest samsung usb drivers install it and restart your computer.
That way you will have a clean start, and if the screen of your phone displays
anything at all, especially if it displays something about kies then that proves that
your phone will go into download mode if it's done properly.
Press the volume down, home and the power button at the same time until the phone vibrates
and then let go of the power button first before letting go of the other two buttons.
Before you do any of this, you need to download the stock Samsung Jellybean
v4.2.2 M919 MDL Touchwiz Odin flash firmware.
Here is the link to download it: http://k0nane.info/rom/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip
Here is the latest Samsung USB Drivers download: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c...ng_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0.exe

Well did finally get Kies to pick up the phone but it just gets stuck on connecting. How is anyone supposed to do a firmware recovery if the phone cant be connected to?
I will try what you said and uninstall and only install the usb drivers.
And to answer your question I can't get into download mode, it just skips right to the Firmware upgrade error.
Although in the top left of the screen I see this:
ODIN MODE
Product Name: SGH-M919
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Official
CSB-OEM_CONFIG_LSB: 0x30
Write Protection: Enable
Does that mean anything?

Then do it the old fashion way, pull the battery out of the phone
and while pressing the volume down/home/power buttons put
the battery back in and see if that gets it into download mode.
(I hope your phone is a Tmobile M919 and not the international version or a variant like the M919V).

Yes, it's is the T-Mobile version. It has the case branding and everything. I got it straight from them.
Ah, that did it! I'm now back in download mode. Thank you.
I'm downloading the stock firmware, it will take about an hour. Should I attempt to flash the OUDHS recovery again, or wait and just flash the stock JB firmware?

You are downloading the STOCK JB firmware now....
After your phone is up and running reboot into download mode and you will need to Odin flash the OUDHS recovery TAR file: http://d-h.st/jTk
Once that's flashed you will need to go into OUDHS recovery and flash this superuser.zip file: http://www.shabbypenguin.com/Android/Scripts/Nexus-Files/Root/Superuser-1.0.1.1.zip
After flashing the superuser.zip reboot the phone.
Just to play it safe, after you reboot the phone reboot it again in recovery and flash this:http://batakang.com/ftp/SGH-M919/ROOT_M919UVUAMDL.zip
This will setup your kernel to be 100% un-restricted so there will be no chance that you will loose root access.
NOTE: If you want to keep your phone STOCK then after odin flashing the JB stock firmware don't do anything else.
Good luck!

Thank you for the help. One question though, Do i continue to use the PDA button on odin for the JB flash like I was instructed for the other thing or do I use the phone button?

FWIW home button is not needed on the S4 to enter recovery or download mode. I love it Just hold down one of the volume buttons as its booting and voila

Make sure your cable is good and try different USB port on pc.
Also which firmware are you on?

I've used 2 cables already and different USB. . I think the pit file is what I may have to check agian,as this seems debugging ODIN failures. Can somebody post me S4, Tmo 16GB stock pit file?

my friend tried to root his T999 but messed up on a step im guessing so now his phone will boot straight to odin mode. i tried putting it in download mode and use odin3 to restore it back to stock but odin3 would get stuck at the "nand write start" stage. his phone says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." when it is powered up. does anybody know how to fix this issue?? any help would be great! i googled everything that i could think of and tried everything that was suggested but nothing works! thanks in advance!!

Contradictory. Is it in download mode or isn't it?
You did not say what was being flashed with Odin, either.
Phones do not boot into ODIN. You will have to provide more info so we can help.
Links to the ROM or software you used etc.
ok i shouldve explained this a little more clearly. when i power on the phone it says this...
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-T999
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: Yes (10 COUNTS)
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE
Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
so i pulled the battery, put it in download mode (vol down + home + power) ran ODIN3, and tried to flash SGH-T999_TMB_T999UVALH2_T999TMBALH2_Original (which is a stock image) thats when it gets stuck at the NAND write start!!
I could be completely wrong but it appears you tried to install an incompatible rom.
are you talking about the SGH-T999_TMB_T999UVALH2_T999TMBALH2_Original file?

If I understand correctly you flashed that after the first one. I'm not a IT guy, but to the best of my understanding if you flash a ROM intended for another device you are going to have major issues. Sorry. I know my answers are not what you are looking for. Download the appropriate zip for your carrier from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 and then flash with odin. Keep in mind the person that hosted these hosted them on a website with incredibly slow download times. It often cuts out on you too, so make sure at the end of the download the file size is right. You may have gotten a bad download earlier.
If I have helped, slap that thanks button

I would recommend installing kies from samsung and trying to flash the firmware with them. That should fix it no matter what and make sure that you do have the right drivers installed. Also make sure you have the right version of odin running. Here is download link for kies on PC (I assume you have PC) http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/SW/201306/20130612104232657/KiesSetup.exe just install, plug your phone in and hopefully it recognizes it. Even if it doesn't, it might install some drivers that make odin work. Let me know if it fixes it

[Q] Trying to install firmware, but Odin failed and now phone won't boot

I was trying to install the latest firmware on my son's M919 via Odin 3.09. I downloaded M919UVUFNB4_M919TMBFNB4_TMB from SAMMOBILE and went to Odin to install. The installation failed. The error said Fail (auth). Now when the phone boots, it goes to a screen that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again." I downloaded both versions of Kies, but neither one can see the phone in Firmware emergency recovery. I can still get into Download mode, but have been unable to successfully flash any stock firmware. I notice on the screen that the phone says SYSTEM STATUS: Official and WRITE PROTECTION: Enable. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It is possible that the file you downloaded from sammobile did not finish correctly and is corrupt. Try redownloading it and try it again. I dont think it will make any difference but I usually will use odin 3.07.

I used to have that a problem with my desktop that has windows 8. Recently I have been using my windows 7 laptop. There are different drivers needed when you are in download mode, plug it in when the phone is in download mode and let it search and find the drivers. You might even want to reinstall the samsung mobile drivers. I would also recommend to use the usb cable that came with the device. Best of luck.

Had you previously been using the modem/baseband from a firmware that you weren't officially on? i.e. NB4 modem/baseband on either MDL or MK2 bootloader? If so, revert just the modem to your bootloader version and then attempt the Odin flash again.

So, I downloaded the new firmware from SamMobile, since I was using TWRP and the OTA wouldn't have worked.
Link is here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/54333/M919UVUFOH3_M919TMBFOH3_TMB/
I had to restart my download several times to get it to finally download completely. Luckily, Firefox would restart where it failed each time, so didn't have to restart from beginning each time. But, it took quite a while - several hours.
BTW, I did a full NAND backup with TWRP before I started this.
Used ODIN 3.09
Flashed once, but the bootloader and modem didn't take, so I did the double flash, and it worked.
To double flash:
Unchecked AutoReboot in ODIN
Flash the firmware once
Pull battery
Boot holding down Vol-Down button to get back to Download mode
Flash again
The problem with the single flash was my WiFi wouldn't turn on, and when I checked out the versions of the ROM, bootloader, modem using Samsung PhoneInfo from the Play Store, I saw the dreaded mis-matched versions.
Some of my partitions were still NH7. Evidently Samsung keeps a backup of some of the partitions and restores them when the phone is rebooted. Double flashing flashes overwrites this backup.
I rooted with CF-AutoRoot again, installed SuperSU, and was back to where I was.
UPDATE:
Only issue so far is that I had to clear the cache on the Play Store. Was getting a services error.
Rob
Thanks for the update. My own download from Sammobile completed successfully (miracle!) And I am considering doing a phone wipe/double flash/rebuild. May choose stock ROM and freeze the junk. I'm on MDL bootloader at the moment and a fairly old LTE modem.
Before I do anything i have to figure out how to back up my texts (in Slimkat messenger app) such that I can restore them properly into the new environment.

If you flash this firmware from SamMobile. It will overwrite your modem to the newest. It will un-root your phone. And, yes you can go directly to this version from your NB4 version.
So, after you flash this firmware you will have the newest modem. And, you will have to root your phone again.
ROM = ROM
Firmware = Modem + bootloader + ROM

If you flash this firmware from SamMobile. It will overwrite your modem to the newest. It will un-root your phone. And, yes you can go directly to this version from your NB4 version.
So, after you flash this firmware you will have the newest modem. And, you will have to root your phone again.
ROM = ROM
Firmware = Modem + bootloader + ROM

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
frustrated foh3
This morning OTA pushed the new update to my phone and I accepted thinking there was a lollipop update finally. I had juke woken up and didn't bother to check first.
Anyway, I'm now on FOH3 and am just trying to install custom recovery on my otherwise un-molested phone. I've tried the heimdall option as well as the cf-auto root with odin 3.09 (even attempted the double flash) either I'm doing something wrong with Odin or missing a step because when I hit start I end with 0 succeeded/0 failed and it stays in download mode. When I attempt to reboot to recovery mode, I get the blue text stating booting recovery and then black screen which eventually just goes back to stock.
Is there some other method I need to try when rooting/installing trwp for FOH3?
[edit: I'm an idiot. assumed I already had debugging turned on. I did not. *facepalm*]
-thanks in advance
I haven't flashed a phone since my galaxy s blaze 4g.

I download this file from the link .... so I get a zip file in my pc called "M919UVUFOH3_M919TMBFOH3_TMB" its a 1.56 gb... did I need to open this zip file? or take this zip file and put on Odin 3.09 in AP / PDA ?
because I open the zip file in my pc and have two files:
- SS_DL.dll
- M919UVUFOH3_M919TMBFOH3_M919UVUFOH3_HOME.tar.md5 ( 2.5 gb )

I think the one what I need to put on Odin its the last file "M919UVUFOH3_M919TMBFOH3_M919UVUFOH3_HOME.tar.md5" right?
but the other file " SS_DL.dll " for what reason came inside the zip file ?
I read need double flash... with " Unchecked AutoReboot" in Odin... but please can you tellme what more choices I need to check or unchecked in Odin to start flash this firmware ?
and if I need to uninstall kies from my laptop and install another Samsung drivers... or with the drivers came in Samsung Kies its ok to start flash this firmware?
thanks thanks thanks ....

Yes, you unzip the file to your computer. The .tar.md5 file is the one that you browse to and select in Odin.
Uncheck everything in Odin. Then, flash this firmware twice, with out letting your phone boot into the system. After the first flash is finished. Pull the battery. Put the battery back in and hold the Volume Down button while you power on the phone. This will put you back in Download mode. Then, flash the same firmware again.
After that second flash, you can boot your phone into the system normally.

"Uncheck everything in Odin".. "Auto Reboot , and F. Reset Time" unchecked ?
and on the second flash, the same or check this two ?

If you really wanted to, you could leave those two checked on the second flash.
However, leaving them unchecked on both flashes will work, and are the easiest instructions to follow.

Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622790. If that doesnt work try DIFFERENT usb cables (official works best), verisions of odin and different usb ports. Make sure usb debugging checked and power down and pull battery, then put battery back and (while its off) hold just vol down then plug it in to the computer while odins open. If this stuff doesnt work it could be motherboard (its probably not though, dont worry). Good Luck, keep trying.

So, I downloaded the new firmware from SamMobile, since I was using TWRP and the OTA wouldn't have worked.
