Note 2 vs s4 stock android development - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking of going back to the s4 from a note 2 because the upgrade just isn't worth the battery life. The only thing that's making me hold unto the s4 is the stock android development especially since the google edition is coming out! The CM nightlies have just been released last week and the progress is amazing! Only on the 8th build and it's already usable day to day with no noticeable difference in performance!
How is the development for the note 2 going? Are the CM, AOKP roms working as good as a nexus now? Last time I flashed it was extremely buggy and downright unusable.

I used CM for a bit and liked it - aosp 4.2.2 is beautiful. The battery life was a bit of a killer (4 hours screen on average, 3-5 depending on usage) and it didn't seem to have bugs as such but was occasionally though a bit glitchy - lag that you don't get in stock (or stock based roms) was present. I flashed back about a month ago to Omega and happy with the at the moment. I really want an aosp rom with the great 6hours+ battery life I can get on stock, but it isn't there yet

Just as I thought lol that's the point of loading stock android if it's gonna have shorter battery life.
The s4 is amazing on cm10.1 and battery life is much improved over stock Samsung. I guess the note 2 will always be behind when it comes to that.

Cyanogen experience - nexus phones vs Att SGS2

Love CM, and enjoy trying out new roms/builds on my phone regularly.
I just bought a SGS2 on ATT about a week ago, and after a few days running stock, i am now on the newest CM KANG build.
It runs great, but my only concern (sort of) is battery life. When flashing CM, or any non i777 rom on my phone, there are drawbacks. Its not horrible, and deifnitley something i can live with, but im wondering is the nexus phones are faced with the same issues.
For example, my standby drain when using the stock rom w/o root was about 12-15% after using it minimally for 7 hours. That same use with CM is about double, which still isnt THAT bad.
Ive never owned a nexus phone, but im wondering how CM performs, and if there are any drawbacks to flashing CM over the stock rom that comes installed on the device.
As someone who flashes a lot, and someone who is starting to get tired of troubleshooting bugs, should i consider selling my SGS2 and gettings a nexus prime?
Cm is best on nexus phones.

I've used CM on both my Nexus One and currently running it on my Nexus S. While I did enjoy it on the N1, it's been unstable on my NS.
I've maybe done one or two battery pulls when I was running the stock ROM on my Nexus S (in a 9 months period). Ever since I've switched to CM7, it seems I do about 4-5 battery pulls a week. And the battery life has been inconsistent. I'm getting ready to revert back to stock. In my case, the added features of CM7 do not outweigh the reliability I was experiencing on the stock ROM.
Once I get the Galaxy Nexus, I'll definitely rock the stock ICS build for as long I can.

hmmmm, i thought CM is just an AOSP rom that is skinned and modded, so maybe the problem isnt the incompabilties with the hardware, but that CM is actually bad on battery life itself.
The rom that nexus phones use are just AOSP roms with google apps installed right?
In all politeness to Cyanogen and G8D love him for his work on the android platform. I would never run one of his roms on my phone.
I have never really been that impressed with the actual running of the roms. They are great full featured produces but from my experience with them they have never been the best rom for a device.

Getting my nexus next week

Just wanted to read some opinions on what are the best ROMS and kernel for the galaxy nexus LTE, I come from the Droid charge, I know a little about imoseyon and gummy team, but the rest are unknown to me. I always read cm9 roms are great, but there are a couple to choose from. Thanks in advanced!
Also, I use my Droid charge a lot for tethering and school so I need a mix of performance and battery life for the galaxy nexus.
AOKP is the team that's killing it right now IMO.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Couple it with Franco's kernel.. battery life is just amazing.
Check the Dev section and see what suits ur taste
So is aokp better than CM9? Also there are different CM9, like I officials, unofficial and kangs, which ones do you think is better?

AOKP is the mod king right now. Pure CM-9 is close to stock, super fast and super clean. Just 2 different experiences. As a new Nexus user I'd recommend you hold off flashing custom roms for a few weeks just to experience stock ICS. It'll make you appreciate the different roms more by giving you the ability to contrast speed as well as modded features. Kernel wise, can't go wrong with Franco's or imoseyon.
My experiences:
AOKP-lots and lots of mods. A bit slower than stock, and good but not great on battery life.
CM-9-Very close to stock but faster. Better on battery life given the very clean code and lack of modded features.
Sent from CDMA GNexus w/CM-9 & franco.kernel
CM9 doesn't have the same level of customization as AOKP.
Idk how AOKP battery life is honestly, it doesn't seem that amazing from some screenshots I've seen.
I'm running liquidsmooth with Franco kernel and am getting amazing battery life.
Right now at 7 hours and 30 minutes on battery, with 1 hour 27 min of display time and listened to over 30 minutes of Music thru Google Play Music. Still have 74% battery left.
A few days ago, I got 3 hours and 20-ish minutes display time on over 11 hours on battery with 40% left of battery.
In a full day of usage I can get over 6 hours display time with heavier usage.

Thanks that was the kind of response I was looking for. I really like lean roms because I can add whatever is missing later. I see you are using CM9, are using the official or the Kang?

That's some incredible battery life, I should take a look at your ROM/kernel combination. Since I tether a lot I had to buy the big 3800 batteries, I know it might look ugly but I hate swapping barrettes.
Since I've never tried ICS I'm going to taste it for a couple of days, then I'll try a couple of roms starting with cm9 then I'll try liquid smooth.

Most Stable ICS ROM?

I gave up on flashing the ICS ROM's about 2 weeks ago because I had the call echo issue on every single one of them. Since a working call echo fix was released tonight, I want to flash one of the ICS builds. Which one of them is the most stable? It's been a couple of week since I tried one, so I'm sure there have been some improvements. I'm looking for some opinions. Thanks yal...
I've been getting phenomenal battery with dark side evolution, didn't have to wait a few cycoes or anything. Painless install and everything working out of the box.

I've had darksite evolution for 2 days now and it's pretty good. Got close to about 12 hours and was at about 35-40% battery with moderate use and wifi on.
2 for Darkside Evolution
1 for Blackedition
1 for Foxstar Tablet UI
Heh, it's your call, OP!
I've been running SkyICS with no problems. Amazing battery life as well.
Make that 3 for Darkside!! New update coming out tonight to. Super stable and with the T-mobile ics leak.
Which ROM is best is entirely subjective - what works for one person won't for another.
So, as always, the thread is now locked to avoid any risk of it descending into squabbling.

[Poll] How satisfied are you with your Nitro?

If you could rate it on a scale of 1 to 10, what would it be?
As of 8/5/12, 8:36 PM EST, the mean score is a 7.8 (round to an 8) and the median is a 9.
I chose 8 because there are several things I want that it lacks. Stable Jelly Bean, NFC, and better battery life.
Id give it a solid 9. Just got it 2 weeks ago and its a step up from mu previous phone ( Galaxy S Captivate). I just wish battery life was better

only problem is battery life and updates
battery life get an extended battery

overall I give it 8.5
Sent from my LG-P935 using Tapatalk 2
Hardware wise: 8/10. Great screen, relatively thin, nice camera. Build quality could be a bit nicer though, especially compared to phones like the One X.
Software wise: 2/10. Very late ICS update, almost zero chance of an official Jelly Bean update, unstable CM9 nightlies/RCs (random reboots, flickering, GPS not working, etc). CM10 preview still has major issues to be worked out. Bad battery life with all of the ROMs I've tried, including the latest V20C official ICS from LG. CM9 RC2 was promising initially but battery life is also not good on that ROM. UI "smoothness" is also really lacking, especially when compared side by side with a Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean. The Nexus's UI just flies compared to the laggy, sometimes flickering transitions on the Nitro HD.
Overall: 5/10.
HW: 8/10 I wish it had NFC lime the optimus.
SW:7/10. ICS was late, but its awesome. CM10 also is very stable for me, not like you guys with random reboots and stuff.

root
The fact that its not as easy to root is the main reason i gave it a 5, also new update ****ed up my battery life bad
Glad to see you guys are satisfied with your Nitros. My vote was a 5, and here's why:
Hardware - Fantastic screen, but I'm not much of a screen guy. I actually like the Galaxy Nexus's screen more which I know makes no sense at all. Decent processor/graphics. Suspect build quality. Subpar camera. Poor reception. No NFC. Overall, 7/10.
Software - Gingerbread up until very recently. Hard to root. Poor developer support, and really just poor developers other than the CM team. Easy to brick. I haven't been able to try ICS for the phone but I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt. Overall, 3/10 on Gingerbread, but I'll give it 5/10 for ICS.
That would give it a six, but I feel like five accurately expresses my feeling towards the phone more.
I love my phone. I'm on CM9 stable and I love this phone. I'd have to give the phone probably an 8 only gig on it being battery life .

I have been using my Nexus One ever since it came out and I bought it from Google online directly. A month ago I flashed CM9 on it and it still runs great!
However, accidentally found a very good deal for P936 so I've decided to give it a try since it's only USD3.00 different for upgrading to 4G plan from my current 3G plan that still have almost 2 years contract.
There are only 3 choices that support 4G on the market: LG-P936, HTC-OneXL, and Samsung GS2-LTE. Whether from the device outlook or the screen quality, P936 is far better than the others, the only disadvantage is OS version - GB... but with CM9, especially the stable release that released recently, I'm falling in love with my P936 more and more on a daily basis!
Hooray!

I gave a 9 for me its a really great phone. Wouldnt need a better one.Didnt give a 10 cause i noticed a couple of bug like download failed and thats about it.Im stock 2.3.5.Really wondering too update to 4.0.4 im just afraid that it will be buggy or the performance will be worse. Can anyone say something about official ics? Is it smooth,do videos lag,do games lag, and is benchmarking and the browser good?
Performance and stability were great with the official ICS for me. I had a bug where the phone would never go to sleep so standby time was terrible. It looks like some other people have ran into that one as well, but not everyone. I'm back on CM9 for now, but I'll try the official version again in the future.
Gave it a 6 because hardware-wise, it's a 8/10, but software wise it's a 4/10. I had stock GB which was, well, GB. Then I took like 12 hours (at a stretch) to get it rooted. After that I installed a CM10 nightly only to face random reboots and an 8 hour battery standby time, alongwith abysmal network performance.
After that I installed HO-NO's latest Stock build. Everything is smooth, but the phone gets stuck for a few seconds and then goes into some sort of deep sleep. I need to do a battery pull every 2 hours.
It' a 9! A good phone. Good hardware (enough for me). Good software (after LG released latest v20c for it)...

Possibly buying SGS III today

while it's only $100 at best buy. How's the development for this one (AT&T)? It looks like 9/10 of the ROMs have been abandoned and not updated for a month or more, is there some reason for this?
Anyway, if I get the SGSIII I will NEED
GPS that locks within 30 seconds, I get lost A LOT.
Working audio (no skipping or weird issues) from the 3.5mm connector
stable and doesn't crash or go really slow
Camera working enough to at least take clear pictures quickly
Do any ROMs do this currently?
Also a couple other questions. What can I expect for battery life, does it last a whole day with moderately heavy use? Any known issues that just come with the device and can't be/aren't currently fixed, like crapple's camera flare or my Infuse's terrible GPS (that got fixed with a relaunch and silent recall)?
Wtf. Almost every cm10 or aokp rom has been updated nightly. Most touchwiz roms don't get updated since they are close to being finished since there are no bugs on stock roms.
If you want it to work good run touchwiz roms. With battery I get 15 to 25 hours and about 4 hours on screen time which is pretty heavy use. As for bugs none I know of on stock. Everything works flawlessly.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
you can use aokp, Its great!
While the International version has a ton of roms, the I747 has a good amount of solid builds. You can have your choice of stock ics touchwiz (ariel), jelly bean touchwiz leaks (aristodemos, serenity) and aosp jellybean hybrids (aokp, liquid smooth, paranoid android). All work perfectly with GPS locking on within 15 seconds max. Never had a problem.

100$ outright or under contract? BB canada is 0$ on our crappy 3 year plan
Yea.... a lot of the TouchWiz ICS ROM's haven't had updates lately because there isn't really a whole lot for them to do with the ROM, since it was pretty much complete to begin with. Just about all they really did on them is remove bloat, add custom themes, and tweak some stuff here and there. The TouchWiz JB ROM's still get updated fairly regularly, since there are still tweaks to be made here and there, and things to be updated as new leaks arise. But stuff like Cyanogenmod and the different ROM's built off of it are updated daily or every other day or two.
Been using CM10 nightly and now on M2 stable build. I use it as daily driver and don't have any issues. You won't be disappointed OP
I'll give my two cents as I've had this phone for bout 4 days now and I am coming of iOS.
I am a fairly techy user. I I run Linux servers for fun. I am but never got jntk android because I figured I'd play with the phone more than use it and it would end up being broken half the time.
Immediately after getting it I rooted it and flashed the rom and have already tried CM10, two TW ROMs and whatever else I could get my hand on.
Ultimately for stability purposes I'm still on stock. The phone is really good in terms of use, and but be prepared to know that ROMing it is still an experimental thing and if you want it to work flawlessly, and you'll most probably sitting on stock (which is not a bad thing)

not to hijack the thread..
but is Ariel the ATT equal of CleanRom for verizon?
I'm on SlimBean but battery isn't stellar... so going to try my luck at a touchwiz rom.
I have a international gs3 9300 and an ATT gs3 and I run my Att gs3 as my main phone because tasks aokp jellybean ROM is hands down the best ROM built for either phone. The 9300 has many more roms than the i747. I bought the 9300 for the increased development and I learned the expensive way that quality beats quantity in the ROM department. Get the Att gs3 and root and flash tasks aokp and I guarantee you will be very happy.
I hope you got the phone today and I hope you enjoy it. Personally, I'm so satisfied with the stock rooted ROM that I've almost kicked my flashing addiction.
Almost.

You can look under the original development page for some good stable roms like SlimBean, PA, and Aokp. All function well enough to be a DD.

I agree with Jonny here... I too am running JB AOKP and everything works perfect. Task650 is always adding new commits and is constantly updating the ROM. Another point to consider... every phone is NOT created equal. The same ROM and kernel can run better/worse on one SGS3 to the next. You have to flash and try a ROM out to see how it runs for you because it won't be the same on another phone of the same model. Besides, what's stopping YOU from going through the development area and reading the threads like the rest of us have to do to learn what we need to? First suggestion.... don't be lazy and expect others to spoon feed you answers because you WILL receive backlash and grief. Do yourself a favor and SEARCH and READ anything and everything you feel is pertinent to your query. Spare yourself the frustration. This is just a word to the wise. No disrespect intended.

The GPS and Navigation is AMAZING on any Android phone.
Their Music app could use some work, however i do use the app PlayerPro
TouchWiz is pretty stable but i find gets slower with time and i think thats due to the fact that its running ICS. I would recommend flashing a custom ROM such as CM10 for JB which makes the OS run ALOT smoother.
The stock camera is also very good with alot of features.
Hopes this helps.
