Kernels - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S2. Rooted it withe hercules tar kernel on Android 2.3. When I upgraded to JB the kernel no longer worked (couldn't root). I tried flashing Cyangoen 10.0 and 9.0 but neither wokred (Waited 20 minutes and nothing). Is there a kernel I need to flash with ODIN?
Also, looking for a good place to learn abot kernels in genral.
Many thanks.

Kernel is causing the problem. Flash only kernel which is made for specific rom/android version. follow this if you want to flash via Odin. I recommend you to install CWM because its easy, safe and time saving.

Installed CWM Recovery, tried to flash Cyanogen 9...now it keeps rebooting back into CWM...can't access the Recovery menu. I downloaded the updated kernel. How do I get it flashed?

I was able to connect via ODIN. Can't get recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.1-hercules.tar to flash.

restart your computer log back in and use a different USB port and make sure you have all the DRIVERS for the phone plug it in flash the ODIN CWM file then you should flash an ICS ROM then flash JB to avoid any hiccups 2.3.4 is a big jump to JB might be giving you errors and you are rooted correct ?

Thank you. Yes I'm rooted an runnning smoothly with Juggernaut ROM for now. Want to change to Cyanogen 9.0. I'll flash the ODIN CWM file as you recommend. Where can I find a good ICS ROM and JB? Didn't know the jump from 2.3.4 to JB would be so big.
Many thanks.

what do you prefer the more stocky looking approach or you into AOKP/CM if you like stock then anything from PTMR and JAMISON904 are on point and very stable if you want some options and custom stuff look into the CM/AOKP around here in the development forums since you are rooted i would download a nice ICS you wont be on it long so doesnt matter lol and then finally jump ship to JB give it time for the battery to settle in becuase there was nothin like GB as far as the battery life goes this one guy who has amazing work and dedication http://goo.im/devs/Cl3Kener anything on there will do you justice when you get to the JB stage good luck and happy flashing!!

C13Kener DOES have some amazing stuff. Thanks. I see that he has a nice ICS stock ROM (Samsung-Stock-4.1.2-Tiberius-Kernel-1.1.zip). Can I just flash that from recovery or do I need to flash a new kernel via ODIN beforehand? Apprecaite your patience and help.

I think there is some confusion here. A ROM is not the same thing as a kernel.

I think thats where I'm having trouble. I have an older kernel (recovery-cwm-hercules.tar) and need to upgrade it before I can flash an ICS ROM. Don't know where to find kernels for the ROMS I want to flash. I thought some ROMs came with the kernel embedded in their zipfile, but finding thats not the case. ODIN is fairly easy to use, but I don't know where to find the right kernels for ROMs like Cyanogen.

Recovery is a tool used to flash ROMs and do backups.
TWRP and CWM are recoveries.
ROMs are the operating system of the phone. They come with a kernel. The kernel is what boots the phone into the OS. You can flash a different kernel if it matches the type of ROM you are on. I hope that clears up some of the confusion.

Best method for Root/Stock Kernel/Latest CWM Currently?

So I've changed my stance on root and I've decided to go for it soon. I'm sorry if this question is redundant but there's a few root methods and even more kernels in the developer's forum now, and this will be my first ever foray into android rooting and flashing so I want the noob friendliest method possible.
My goal as indicated in the title is to end up with root, a clean stock kernel and the latest CWM. So what path would you guys suggest I take based on what the great devs have put together thus far? By the way, I have a good handle on Odin I think so I don't need flashing instructions, just the best path to take to the above based on the kernels available.
Thanks in advance.
I have found that stock kernels work best for me. I would suggest you try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296348 or this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305099. I am currently using the second one.

Thanks but the LOSt kernel isn't stock is it? Assuming it's not, I've decided to pass on it for now and go straight stock. So since chris41g's kernel doesn't root, would it be best to get root by flashing Zedomax's kernel first, then chris' or flash Superuser via CWM after flashing chris' kernel? I'm trying to find the method with the least potential for problems since this is my first go at it.
Thanks again.
I would flash the stock with cwm and then flash the superuser, zip in cwm.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
Well I had a change of plans and decided to go straight to chris41g's LoStKernel. Gonna run that for awhile and see if I can pull of my first LOS. If not, cool beans. If I do, I can always just flash a stock kernel via CWM now that I'm rooted.
Thanks for the advice guys!

Moved to AOSP ROM's, questions about modems.

I've moved from the awesome line of Calkulin ROM's to the official MIUI port and this is something I've always wondered. Will I have to update to new modems manually when they come out or does one flash with the ROM?
With my old Evo 4G I had to update radio's on my own running CM7.
One of those questions that I have yet to find a definite answer on.
You can flash one while in a TW rom, or use Odin while in CM7 or MiUi. Not flash while in AOSP type rom.

Why can't you use CWM to flash a modem, CWM is CWM no matter what ROM you're using?

I cant tell you the reason it fails when using CWM in CyanogenMod7, but it fails. My guess is it checks the firmware (ROM) somehow before flashing/writing and thats why.
Good to know. Odin is easy enough to use so thats not a big deal.

Please help!!! Rom install

ok, first off i bought a at&t galaxy s3 sgh-i747. i have it factory unlocked to work with my carrier. here is the build info
model: samsung-sgh-i747
android version: 4.04
baseband version: i747uclg1
kernel: 3.08-599060-user
build number: imm76d.i747ucalg1
i rooted it on my own (first timer) with clockwork recovery, i have superuser. i also have some other recommended rooted apps, rom manager, titanium backup, busy box, metmorph. all these i am in the early stages of even understanding them.
so i went through at first and like ics. i just wanted it a little faster, i wanted to overclock it, got what i thought i needed, flashed the kernel i believe with odin, and was stuck at the samsung logo, it would show for a min and go away, then nothing, so luckily i found the stock kernal, flashed it back to stock. everything is cherrry. so today, i was looking into custom roms, found a couple. followed all instructions, flashed with clockwork recovery, while loading, it aborted and gave me a status 7 error. i restored my phone with recovery back to normal. tried with another rom with clockwork, same error. it aborts.
honestly what do i need to do to 1. install a kernel 2. safley install a stable rom (maybe just jelly bean) 3. be happy.

I recommend you look around the forums (searching thoroughly or threads with stickies) as there are already quite a few threads with reliable information about properly flashing Kernels and ROMs.
I CAN however tell you that to install a Kernel you usually need to make sure it's compatible with whichever ROM you installed, for example there is the KT747 with one version for Stock Based ROMs and another for AOSP roms etc.
Most Jelly Bean ROMs are still buggy but plenty are stable enough to use as daily driver, I personally recommend CyanogenMod 10 or AOKP (AOSP based ROMs). For Stock based ROMs in Jelly Bean I recommend Black Jelly, and Drew Garen Sprint ports. As for the Error you're getting when flashing, make sure you have the latest version of ClockWorkMod Recovery or at least one of the latest ones, as most of the newer ROMs require them. (I have version 6.0.1.2)
Here are some links to the above mentioned ROMs,

AOKP (Jelly Bean): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949025

Another ROM Stock Based ICS I forgot to mention is KyanROM. That was the first one I flashed on my GS3 and I immediately loved it. It has been thus far the most stable and nice looking ICS room I have used. Perhaps you can give it a try! I believe its on the Android Development (Not to be confused with ORIGINAL Android Development) section of this phones forum.

android version: 4.0.4
baseband: i747uclg1
kernel: 3.0.8-985684-user
build number: blackcream v .1a
wanamlite rom:vlalh1 v1.3
so after thinking about all this modifications, and prolly screw ups. i wanted to go back to stock...which i backed up, only had root and root apps...stock g3. i went to restore it, it have a md5 mismatch. cannot restore back to stock!!! i think my build is unstable. i need help and i will listen. i am a step by step person. please help.

Ok..thanks for the pic. How the hell you were able to run international rom ...crazy. Anywho, you said you tried restore your "stock" backup you made. At least you made one! Good job on that, but now you're getting a MD5 error? That happened to me to a while back. After searching, I came across this thread. I did the suggested code and my backup was fixed. That may be something to look into. You will need to use terminal emulator to do this. (it's free in the market)

Error 7 means you're trying to flash leaked JB version on top of a ROOTED device. The leaked version ONLY works on NON-ROOTED LH1 version.
If you want to try JB, I will recommend trying (CM10 M2 build). Once you're comfortable, then update to the nightly build then.
CM10 thread is here

Recovery in the kernel?

I was thinking about how frustrating having CWM in the kernel was, and I remembered reading that some stock ROMS don't require it to be in the kernel. If this is so, why do CM and other devs still put it there?

What are you talking about? Having CWM in the kernel benefits those who flash different custom roms on a daily basis.
That may be, but for people who would like to try out different recoveries (touch), it's near impossibly without having to mess with the kernel.

cwm is necessary to flash custom rom except the stock firmware that you need flashtool

Which recovery to use with JB?

I haven't gotten my way entirely around this specific phone when it comes to recoveries and such. My sister owned this phone sometime before me and while she had it, I rooted it and installed a safe recovery. I later flashed CM10 on it, but earlier I flashed a rooted version of the JB leak, and wanted to know what recovery can I use with JB so I can flash other Touchwiz JB roms?

There is an Agat repacked FK23 thread but there are known issues. You can check out that thread in the dev section. There are some other repacks in there as well.
As of right now, the recommendation is using el26 cwm as the go to recovery for flashing anything while on a JB TW build.
So, in short, you'd:
1. odin el26cwm
2. either do a battery pull or long press and hold power+vol up (as normal) to get straight back into recovery (rom will not boot now)
3. Flash the JB TW rom
4. Flash the JB stock recovery.
5. PC odin the JB modem (if you're currently not on one)
If you're going to flash any aosp/aokp builds, those thread OP's have detailed suggested instructions.
