Semi-Random shut off
I've been experiencing some random shut off with my TMo Dash. What happens is when I'm just doing random things or whatever, the whole phone shuts off like I pulled out the battery. There seems to be some correlation to when I use the wifi too. The rom has been changed from the original TMo rom > 1.33 > Rogers > 6.1. Anyone think they can offer some insight as to what is wrong and how to fix it?
I flashed from TMo official 6.0 straight to Kavana's 6.1 0307. This rom is rock solid, much smoother operation and better signal. I guess your issue is a isolated case. Maybe you can try to flash to TMo 6.0, then to Kavana's 6.1?
I had those problem since the 1.33 upgrade.
I learned that this happens when power consumption is high, like when I'm downloadind e-mail, during wi-fi session.
It doesn't happen if the phone is connected to a power source.
May be the problem is the battery (hardware), or may be is the power management section.
I am waiting a new battery and I am trying in the mean time to have it fully charged (and discharged) for a couple of cycles with this (kavana's) new rom
yea i kinda noticed the whole high power consumption/wifi thing. Hopefully its "just" that or "just" a battery. If it turns out to be the phone thats bad, time to upgrade to a touch or an iphone or something.
quick update. I just downloaded 1.22 which is the latest rom available from Tmobile. Install went perfect. Working within it seemed fine. Got online found Google Maps Mobile, and was able to download it and install it. Went back online to try to get the surreal unlock and thats when it died again. Quite depressing this is as I do like this phone.
yea this is happening to me since i flashed my phone like a couple of times ago, i dont remember which version tho. it would b sweet if someone figured out what the problem is...
From what I am reading on board posts, and talking to people personally, it sounds like a bad battery issue. Something along the lines of overcharging. In anycase, a new battery off ebay or your favorite retailer for $10-20 bucks is a small price to pay to trouble shoot a $100-200 dollar phone.

Thats what i found out last night, my friend also has an excalibur and i used his battery and i dont have any problems whatsoever with it. The most common occurrence of the phone randomly shutting off was when i was using EDGE, because i rarely use wifi but it did do it then as well...

I think that's it. I had the same problem with my battery. I couldn't even answer myphone without it going off. I sent my phone in to T-Mobile and they sent me a new one and I was having the same problem. I paid $110 for no reason (they said my phone had water damage). Don't pay for it unless you have to. Go to a T-Mobile cooperate location and ask them if they can exchange your battery for you. They should bring you out a free one. If not then I guess you can order one for $30 through customer service. It's probably just a batter problem. If you can get a free one then take it. And you have to use a T-Mobile approved charger. None of that third party stuff Don't do anything new to your phone yet.
I had this issue also until I bit the bullet and upgraded the battery from a 750 mAh to a 2400 mAh from AccessoryOne.com (BTW that company was sketchy, made me wait 2 weeks before I got the battery; made me pretty nervous.)
The new battery came with a new back door for the phone bc it is 3x as thick.
Works like a charm, runs for days and days without a charge.

...and we are back to the suck. Now it shuts down with what I know is a full charge doing all kinds of stuff. Checking email on the exchange server, surfing the web, checking voicemail, etc.
This is REALLY starting to piss me off.

Glad it's not just me. I posted about this after the 1.33 update and everyone made me feel stupid, like I couldn't tell my battery life had been cripled recently. My symptoms are the same, phone shutting off randomly, especially on wifi. Its now at the point that my battery is not holding a charge more than 5 minutes after being plugged in all night. I have actually noticed a bulging of the battery and the back cover will not sit flush any longer. Today I went to a tmobile store and they replaced the battery with a brand new unit, but it still shuts off when wifi is powered on.
I really like this phone, help?
It's a battery issue.. I had Tmo send a replacement phone, I swapped my battery over and beat on the new one for 30 seconds with the Tmo ROM and it shuts off..
Theres someone on ebay selling OEM batteries for something like $0.99 + $5.60 shipping. I got one on the way now.

Tmo told me to eat s*** when I asked them to replace my battery and threw me off to HTC who also told me to pound sand because HTC doesn't have a contract with Tmo.

I really hope that works for you but I think I am done with this phone. It started after about a year with the old T-Mobile Windows 6 system. Wouldn't haold a charge anymore, shut off randomly. Thought it was the battery. Bought a new big fat battery 2400 mAh, changed to WM 6.1 Kavana and the issues are still there.
Sorry HTC, this is a piece of crap. With all the bells and whistles and internet crap it really doesn't matter much if I can't make a F**KING PHONE CALL!!!!
I am going back to Nokia and as long as it supports Exchange server so I can work I am good because first and foremost I need the PHONE to work so I can TALK to people!!!

Just jumping on the battery bandwagon ... I had similar problems that were resolved by replacing the battery. A new battery + new 6.1 ROM = new phone!
I've had this issue. For me, I was draining the battery by checking for new emails every 15 minutes. Wi-Fi can also be a power hog.
Dash intermittent powers off??
Here's the situation, my original ROM was T-Mo wm 6.0. While using this ROM, the phone would occasionally lock up...I had to remove the battery to clear it up, but after that all was fine. Then I upgraded to wm 6.1 kavana...initially, all worked well, ran it for 3 months no issues. Lately it just powers off, when I power back on, it will look like it's regular bootup, but just as it registers to the t-mo network, it will power off again. Even after removing the battery for a few minutes, I might get the same results...eventually, it will work again. So I thought maybe all the apps I have running in the background could be causing this. So I upgraded to rickywyatt v21. Even without installing and running my normal set of apps ("Don't Forget", "Keylock") it still powers off intermittently and behaves the same way. What is causing this and what is a fix?
Battery or Omap Clock ?
If you are using the overclock (omap clock) feature of rickys rom first disable that and if the problem still occurs get a new battery. I had the same problem and doing that I now have no random shut down issues. Im pretty sure my battery was shot.
So, for the past month and a half, I've been having some serious overheating issues with my E4GT, whether I have it rooted and a custom ROM flashed, or running stock. It has now gotten to the point where the phone smells..funky, near the camera on the back. Now, Sprint labels the battery as the culprit...twice now, they just give me a new battery saying the old was swollen, and that it is what was causing it to overheat. Completely ignoring that I state it smells like fried parts. Now, the batteries were all normal in appearance, mind you, not a bit swollen. No water damage either. It gets almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. ..Yet, battery life actually isn't terrible, go figure. This overheating happens whether I am using the crap out of my phone, or just leaving it sit idle.
Any ideas what to do from here? It makes it almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable, especially if it happens when I make a call. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. I've made a habit of unplugging it when it says it's at a 100% charge, too.
I'm sick of Sprint shoving me aside every time I go there, which is three times now. So, if there are any ideas as to how I can get them to just replace the damn thing without spending 100 through insurance..lay it on me. I've searched the forums for a solution to this particular issue, no avail. Hell, if it takes purposely bricking for them to pay attention, then I'll do it, but that's on the back burner. Far far back.
I have tried all sorts of things to keep it running smoothly, I guess my main question is how to get Sprint to just replace the dang thing.
Apologies for the novel, guys and gals.
**...somehow the title ended up being just one word. Not sure how it got deleted. I blame cats. "Major overheating issue, getting the good ol' Sprint run-around.." <--should have been that.
Go to a different sprint store....they're being dicks, never had that issue at any sprint store in my area. You have a fault phone and it needs to be replaced.

I had the same problem and so did my woman. Do yourself a favor and download Calkulins battery saver E4GT ROM. I don't know how but it keeps the phone cooler. Seriously. Haven't had any over heating issues since. EL29 stock kernel always causes mine to heat up. Hope this helps
I've used that as well, but the thing still smells pretty bad whenever I use..well..anything. :/ I have tried all sorts of things to keep it running smoothly, I guess my main question is how to get Sprint to just replace the dang thing. I should add that to the initial post...

Do you have insurance? You could always just brick it to the point where all ya get is the blue led of death and bring it in and tell them the thing just suddenly went off on ya and when you tried to turn it on this is what happened.
Do NOT try to damage it using water because they have these stickers inside the phone and on the battery that change colors when they come in contact with water so sprint will know, and laugh in your face.
my phone also gets very hot like in 120 range
You could send it to Samsung under warranty, and when u go to sprint make sure its a corporate service center and not a 3rd party "authorized service center". When you go in don't mention overheating at first start off with "my phone smells funny, like burning plastic and when I pick it up I notice the screen is very warm/hot to the touch and sometimes has issues with the touch responsiveness" this should get their attention away from the battery and more towards the internal issues, more than likely its the SOC that is overheating if it's hottest near the camera area of the phone

I've had this phone for a little over three days now. Overall, I absolutely love it. The only smartphones I've ever owned were the Evo lines, so this was a big leap for me, and I'm not sorry. However, there are a few issues with it.
First is a strange antenna issue. I have the Sprint version of the Optimus G, updated and rooted. When the network mode is set to LTE/CDMA, the 3G antenna will only turn on very rarely, leaving me entirely without internet access. I was about to return in when I realized that the issue is solved when I change it to CDMA only. We don't have LTE in my area, so I don't mind leaving my LTE antenna off. I'm not sure if it's an issue with my phone alone, or if it's a software issue that others have.
Then there's the screen. The screen itself is BEAUTIFUL, and I have no issues with it. But the screen scratches like crazy! I am extremely careful with my phones, and this one in particular. I kinda bought it on impulse, so I didn't have time to order a screen protector for it (one should be in tomorrow though). So I have been treating it with extra, almost paranoid caution. It's only ever been in my pocket while at work (nice khakis, so nothing harsh), and otherwise it's been undisturbed on a table. I check my pocket for any abrasive lint often since there's no screen protector on it. But the screen has developed about a dozen or so scratches, and one of them deep enough to distort the screen when it's on. I don't know how this is happening (the deep one happened in the space of five minutes, inbetween two texts, and was merely put into and removed from my pocket.)
Also, the battery life is kinda crappy. I live near a tower, so always have full signal. At work I'm on wifi, so that's not an issue. The battery scarcely lasts through work, with VERY light usage, and is nearly dead by the time I get home. Today, from the time I woke up with it at 100% to the time I got to work (about 2 hours, with constant near-full signal), the phone dropped from 100% to 76%.
Are these normal issues, or am I the only one experiencing them? I want to love this phone so much, but these seem like serious flaws to me.
I too had to change to CDMA so dont know what is wrong with that. And the scratches is weird ive dropped mine a few times and dropped my keys on the screen and nothing. And my battery is phenomenal. Seems like you have a dud.

In regards to the screen....this may sound like a stupid question and I don't mean to offend, but did you remove the temp screen protector that it comes with? I've not had one issue with my screen being scratched and I can't say I've been all that good to it for the last week.
I've had the phone for a full week now and I have not experienced 3G drops with LTE/CDMA mode enabled. Also haven't scratched it either (thankfully). I constantly put it in and out of my jean pocket throughout the day, so I don't really understand how yours got to be that way.
As far as battery life, I too don't see the issues you're having. Typically I pull it off the charger at around 7AM and can easily get 12 hrs+ with normal usage. Even with Android OS taking up the bulk of my battery (seems to be awake a lot). Lot's of people saying its a battery drain bug, etc. etc. etc...but if I'm getting 12 hrs easily, and 24 hrs with light usage, I don't have a problem with that.
-Screen brightness at 60%
-Wifi on all the time (connected at home and at work - probably helps, lol)
-2 Gmail accounts pushed constantly, Facebook messenger, and a few other apps that auto-update on schedule (news readers n stuff)
-My commutes to and from work - I listen/watch podcasts and/or read. Which means the screen is on the entire time (approx a 1hr commute). All said, my screen-on time sits at around 3 hrs for me.
I'll post some screenshots in a minute...

No scratches or weird battery issues here. My first two days the battery life was horrid. Afterwards I did some update and poof like magic.
Anyone have any info on the boot loader unlock initiative? I miss aosp
got this phone for sprint yesterday after having a BB for 5 years .. and i'm loving the beautiful screen,.
Only hiccups is maybe the battery... Yesteday i had it full on 100% then after 2 hours went down to 80%..
I'm currently in the office charging the phone to 100% will remove it and do normal routine on it and see how long it last.

Haha, I actually checked for this before posting. It is absolutely something I'd do.
After reading these and other comments about the phone, I realized I probably had a dud. I went to the Sprint store a couple days ago and swapped it out for a new one, and it's running beautifully, with none of these issues. So I guess I just got a faulty one. Thanks all for responding!

Good to hear! Sorry, I had to ask...my girlfriend had the same problem with her phone she got a couple months ago and it was because the temporary screen protector was still on the phone!
Anyone finding it gets kinda hot? I've read some owners complaining about this and it was mentioned in some review somewhere. Wondering how widespread it might be. Might be that people keep all 4 cores running 24/7. I don't see the point if you're web surfing, talking, texting. I keep it on Eco Mode most the time.
I've only notice it get warm once or twice, but even then it was barely noticeable. But I've had eco mode on since I got the phone, and it's not hesitated or stuttered once.

We are thinking of switching to Sprint, so we went to Best Buy and picked up one of these phones and I'm very impressed with it so far.
Actually this is the second one because the first one had a factory defect in the chrome around the screen. It get home with the 2nd one and notice there is a speck of dust under the glass.
I'm going to return this one in a day or two and see if the third one is a charm. If not, I'm not getting a forth one!
Any suggestions on a different phone for Sprint if this one doesn't work out? To me the only other phone to get would be the Note 2 and then the GS3.
A little help here guys. I was planning to return mine because of battery problem. Like i tried playing Dead Trigger, current battery is 54%, 30 brightness, sync and data is off. I played for good 5 minutes and it dropped to 48%. One more test is after it got 100% full charged, i unplugged it, Wifi is on still 30% and not using it for a couple of minutes it dropped to 97% and im not even using it!
So i want to return it.
The question is:
Do i have to pay for replacement? I got mine at BestBuy for 99$ almost a month ago.
2nd is will still they accept it now it got scratch on four sides. Any suggestion?

As long as it hasn't been over 30 days and the phone doesn't look "abused" then you should be fine, also if it's been under 30 days i would add geeksquad protection especially if you plan on rooting, i thought it was a bad investment at first, then when talking to a tech after my evo4g bricked he just said to "make sure the device doesn't power on" and they will replace it needless to say i took a ballpeen hammer too it and got a shiny new one 2 days later.
I took the LG back and got the GS3. I've already had to clear the cache on the galaxy because of excessive battery drain.
If the GS3 fails me, I'm gonna try the Note 2.

Yep, on eco mode the battery is outstanding. The phones is faster than my wifes S3 on eco mode, and I get nearly 2 days without charging. I had the note II for a week and that is just as good but was too big for me. This phone impresses me everyday.

Anyone experiencing a very hot phone with the new G4? I thought that they chose the 808 vs the 810 because of heat problems, but when I have Tune-in running in the background or Google Play is updating 6 apps, the phone gets extremely hot. I just got a warning that it was 51c/123F. That's quite hot for doing so little. Nothing else was going on.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
that sounds concerning... probably yet another defective G4. I haven't seen a temp over 105 on mine
I've noticed it getting very hot in my pocket. I've only noticed this a handful of times with my previous phones (G3, G2, SG4, SG3, SG2, etc), but it's happened quite a bit in the week that I've had the G4.
Mine feels as cool as a dead cow.
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
Most of the time, mine is too, but if it does anything slightly intensive (I don't think updating apps or playing tune-in radio as intensive), I get warnings about battery temps and it feels very hot right around the buttons/camera and on the glass side. There are times, when it's just sitting in my pocket and I can feel how hot it is. It's not burn-the-skin hot, but it's uncomfortable to keep in my pocket. Normally, battery temp in the high 80s low 90s, but at these times it's registering over 100F.

I use TuneIn regularly, also Google maps when driving, and I haven't noticed any increase on temperature at all, not even when charging.
Mine is always cool as a dead cow too, LMAO!
I tweeted t-mobile help to see what they have to say.
Mine hasn't even gotten remotely warm, even if I play with it while plugged in.
Nope.

Mine got warm inmy pocket next to my wallet out in 105 degree weather...not hot but warm
I have the same issue. Gets really hot just from simple things like web browsing and games that are not graphic intense
I told T-Mobile and they keep saying that I'm running too many things in the background. I've used this phone the exact same as I used G3 and it never got hot like that. The only time it would get hot would be in the car with tune-in + gps + charging was going on.
I have had it get hot in my pocket too. So hot i needed to move it to a different place. Not sure what was causing it but i hope someone figures it out..
Same here. Not sure what to do since some say theirs doesn't get hot and some say they do.
So I took my phone to T-mobile today and they first went through "your phone is hot for idiots," telling me that running too many apps, leaving it out in the sun, using a case, playing games, etc, can cause the phone to get hot. I told them that it got hot when the play store updates apps. She said she could fix that and turned of auto update. Really? I showed her the current temp of 81F. I then turned on Tune-in Radio and made a phone call. In the matter of 7 minutes, the temp wen from 81F to 96F. Still okay. I turned off Tune-in Radio and hung up the phone and then turned on Periscope. The temps raced to 109F. The buttons were hot to the touch and my batter app warned me about the battery being too hot.
They told me it was too soon for the warranty. Really, too soon? And because I was in the buyer's remorse period, that since I bought it online, I would have to return the phone online and once they received the phone, they would send me out another one. What? They said I would be 7-10 days without a phone because they only ship ground, not overnight. The representative in the store offered me a loaner phone which was a flip phone circa 2002. I told her that was unacceptable. If I purchased it from T-mobile online, it should be just as if I purchased it at a local store. I can buy on Bestbuy.com and return to the local store. They said no. She talked to her manager who then told her to complain on the phone and after about 45 minutes, she got them to send me a new phone (5-7 days) and then when I receive it, I can ship back my too-hot phone.
The manager didn't think that 109F or 117F temps were too bad. I told him, that these were the temperatures that dangerous battery malfunctions are made of. I had a battery that bulged almost to the point of breakage on my Sprint PPC 6600 back in 2009.
So hopefully, this will resolve my problems. I'm supposed to get the LG second battery on Saturday. I'll swap batteries to see if it is just the battery.
Oh, I also forgot to mention that T-Mobile twitter told me to restore my phone to stock, out-of-the box state. Don't log in using my gmail credentials and leave the phone in the default stage for a few days to see if it happens again. Really? What's the point of having a smart phone if all you can do is text and receive calls? Without gmail credentials, I can't download apps, I can't check my email, or do anything else you're supposed to do with a smart phone. Of course texting and cell phone alone shouldn't tax a smart phone. Duh!
Frustrated, to say the least.
Did they require a receipt ? I am thinking of getting a replacement. i have a leather g4 that overheats and when it gets hot around 105f it is unusable almost as if it throttles the cpu down all the way to the point where its lagging like crazy…Its so annoying but anyways i think im going to try to get a replacement but i do not have a receipt..
They said if you ordered online, you must return online and yes with receipt. They said they need a store receipt (not an online one) to return at the store.
Mine gets so hot doing just dumb things, it can't be working correctly. It will go from 80 to over 100 in a matter of minutes.
Just called customer service and they got me to online store services and I told them mine was getting hot just from simple web browsing and if I could get an exchange. They said since its still within 20 days they can apply a buyers remorse thing and they next day aired it for me. They basically said because I'm still within the return window they'll send me a new one cause they want to be sure I get a good device.
Nice. Good for you. I hope once my new one gets here, I will no longer have any issues. I'm going to run the same apps simultaneously and see if the temps stay the same.
Found out how to fix it ! Factory reset your phone and it will also receive the stability software update. Mins seems better and is charging faster !
Hi,
Looking for a wee bit of guidance, from the experts here, prior to taking some drastic measures.
I've had my Z1C for just over 2 years (I just switched over to a sim only deal a couple of weeks ago). I'm quite happy with everything, and it still runs fine - apart from what appears to be a dodgy battery life. Battery has always been fine, until about the last month, when I noticed things becoming a bit funny.
Here's a screenshot of what happened yesterday, when I got home. I put my phone in my gym bag around 1930 (when the network went red), and then got home around 2200. When I got home, it was still in my gym bag, although would be connected to wifi. I went to bed kinda late at 0230 (ooops), and when I got it out my bag (I use it for my alarm), I was amazed to find it completely dead. Can anyone explain why it appeared to lose 50% of battery within a few minutes??
Should I do a factory reset?? Is the battery totally gone, and am I looking for a new phone??
Many thanks in advance!!

Hard to say after only 1 time. Wait it out and see if it happens again, it could have been a fluke. It's fairly common - http://forum.xda-developers.com/son...ttery-reporting-phone-dying-suddenly-t3095120

@levone1, many thanks for the link. I'm not a frequent visitor here, and hadn't done a thorough search. That thread will be interesting reading.

Just for anyone reading this - my phone is experiencing the same problems - shutting off with anywhere from 40-60% battery left. I've read through the thread linked above, and the only resolution is a replacement battery.
I've ordered a battery and replacement rear cover from www.replacebase.co.uk, which should arrive early next week. I'll do the fix and report back.

Battery and replacement rear cover arrived on Saturday morning - less than 48 hours after placing the order. I followed any one of the numerous videos on youtube showing phone dissassembly and battery replacement, and all went fine. Phone is like new now. You do have to carefully remove the NFC sticker and transplant it onto the new battery - make sure to line up the little pressure connectors.
Again, many thanks to @levone1 for his help.
Have you wiped your system battery stats file? Have you changed your ROM recently? If both questions have the answer "NO" - it is worth it to find some guides (here in XDA) for deleting the battery stats - it isn't guaranteed to actually notice any difference, but it is good to try (especially now, with the new battery)
I'm waiting for my replacement battery too as I suspect that my battery is going to be dead soon. It is heating up rapidly when the charge is below 20-15%.
same here. it lasts for past few months, persists thru rom variations (cm, aosp, stock) and sometimes gets better for a while but goes bad again. suddenly drops from anything above 50% to as low as about 20%, and then to zero & shut down in matter of minutes. back on charger it goes from zero to 100% in about 15 minutes, i guess my charger evolved overtime to extra quick one. lately the full charged battery doesn't lasts morning to afternoon with moderate usage. as the behaviour persists between roms and as there are no suspicious wakelocks either, i guess its hardware thing not fixable by wiping battery stats or similar mumbo-jumbo, so i replaced battery the other day and now the phone is perfectly fine again.
however, as there are a large (and growing) number of similar posts and same-looking screenshots all around, device is circa two years old, and minding that the battery isn't replaceable easily like "open the back cover and replace", it all looks like sony managed to put two-year batteries inside waterproof case that goes dead just by the end of usual user's contracts, so you could either go to service for replace or - yes you're right - buy a new device by the end of contract for us that aren't on the contract but we did unlock the bootloader the price of official-service is sky high because of unlocked bootloader, at least in my country. in the end it's all corporate math, pardon my conspiracy theory
Google "google play services 9.2.56 battery drain" and you see people with all sorts of phones and tablets having the same issues.*
