I know it can be confusing, so it is best to flash kernel recommended by rom owner.
But, i can try to explain:
There are two (2) type of roms:
-Stock (based on sony's firmware)
-Aosp (or aokp, cm or miui)
So, you have Stock gb and ics, but no Stock jb.
For Aosp based roms, you have cm7 as gb based, cm9 as ics based and cm10 as jb based (i don't know what is miui based on)
To be able to boot rom, you need kernel that match type of rom you want to install.
Some version of kernels can boot dual type roms:
Example:
1: ics/gb Stock - can boot ics and gb roms based on Stock firmware
2: ics/gb cm - can boot ics and gb based on aosp ics gb roms
3:lupus v8 jb can boot Aosp jb and Aosp ics roms, and MAYBE that's the
kernel you are searching.
The best way is to search in kernels thread based on rom you want to install

I didn't flash recently any miui roms, do they have kernel inside the rom's zip file? Or was it inside cm roms?

dude, that makes a lot of sense, ever since i installed the kernel that i mentioned earlier i have been having random issues with some custom roms
usun lupus ics v12 720 on verizon xperia play
Gin2jelly bean rom is not recognized by my computer and wom was amazing but i dont like when developers put too much apps in it . i guess the problem was the kernel i am using
ICE CREAM PURENESS : laggiest thing ever, dont know why
[ROM][GSM] Gamer 4 [Ultimate Sony experience], this rom i wanted to install because it has on screen softkey buttons. so i could use those instead of the hardware one, but have to uninstall because the didnt appear on screen and has lots of apps.
SLIMBEAN: WELL I COULDNT INSTALL IT AND KERNEL KEPT ON BOOTING LIKE CRAZY.
NOW I AM BACK WITH THE BEST ICS ROM IN MY OPINION THE TRUE ANCESTOR FINAL EDITION, WHICH I LOVE BUT IT DOESNT HAVE THE SOFTKEY BUTTONS
but now that you clarify this i might try to flash a jelly bean kernel since google claims that jellybean is the one to beat lag.
THANK YOU GUYS FOR REPLYING.
greetings from a real newbie
Well, just to add, if you want gaming perfomance, use gb roms. Ics is stable these days, but little slower then gb in gaming. Jb is only Aosp based, it's good in gaming, but some things are still "work in progress".
Ps: we where all noobs at some point
Ask whatever you want (just do not ask for ETA)

ICSNEO2PLAY thats what i read at the end of all your posts, i assume you use that rom
TELL ME ABOUT THAT ROM, IT SEEMS THAT I CAN ALREADY INSTALL IT SINCE I HAVE AN ICS KERNEL.
DOES IT HAVE ON SCREEN BACK HOME AND TASK BUTTONS?

Eta is asking when something will come out. Neo2play is the Rom that he made and its in his Signature that's why you see it in all his posts. That rom doesn't haven't screen buttons but it does give you lots of choice in what you use to fully customize your phone through aroma installer. It should work if you have an ics kernel but it has to be a stock ics kernel not aosp. If your using true ancestor then that means neo2play should work on the sane kernel
Sent from my Xperia Play (r800x)
True ancestor rom, as my rom also, is based on Stock ics for Neo L (since that phone have exactly same hardware as play, minus touchpafs). My rom came out later, but i modded it more, and put aroma installer with bunch of rom options (gamers like less things installed, casual gamers sacrifice ram for the sake of extra stuff).
Some roms have osb (on screen buttons), but you'll have to search for it.
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
If you really want osb then you can use markphytons nxt ics revolution rom. He removed it from xda but you can probably find a link for it somewhere in q&a section

Hi all,
My phone is rooted and has an unlocked bootloader, but I tried to install this rom today:
MooDeD ICS ROM v.4.0 / xUltimate v7.0 Engine [ROM]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526717
But I forgot to flash the new boot.img (new kernel), wich I had to install using flashtool. Now I can't normally boot my Arc (I can understand why), but I also can't get into CWM recovery! So do I know have to flash the new kernel wich I had to do before.. or can I get Android 2.3.4 somehow back on my Arc? And if I flash the new kernel for ICS can I flash it back to the kernel for Gingerbread afterwarts? The new kernel is based on ICS beta btw.
I hope you can help me
Everything is working very well since I flashed the ICS kernel I am now running Mooded ICS rom v30.5 without any problems (few bugs in the rom, but overcomable)

I figured that flashing ICS kernel and install the rom again worked when I had flashed the kernel I could get back into recovery again Thanks for your reply
does the DoomLord Kernel work on a ICS rom? Or does it has to be the ICS kernell by DoomLord?! on other words on ICS Roms the kernel has also to be based on ICS?
That's correct as far as I know has to be ics
Sent from my LT18i using Tapatalk
I don't recommend doomlord because it's a bit buggy, but there are plenty of usefull kernells. To make ICS work you will need ICS kernell

What is the best and fastest gingerbread MIUI rom? Also, if I add the most recent FXP 7.2 files to Blend Miui speed porting app, can I make my own rom? Our must I keep the files that are already there? Abby advice would be great!!!
Sent from my LT15i using xda app-developers app
None. Its officially available for ICS only (talking about Arc here) there's some poor attempts to make a GB one, but nothing worth trying
If you want a good MIUI rom, lite on resources, I strongly recommend Arconium MIUI 2.5.11 with Stock with CWM kernel :good:
And I can't help you with the other part of your quest, better if someone who knows about porting answers you
this is best miui GB for arc/s and ray,neo

Hi There,
maybe this is a funny question, but still I wish to ask it.
Is there a stock based kernel that would support a CM-10 rom ?
Nope AOSP based kernels support CM, Stock based ROMs support Stock based ROMs. Simple as that most kernel threads will specify that anyway
Sent from my Xperia Arc S
Nope. Unless Sony releases an official jb rom with jb kernel for us to play around with. Stock for stock based, cm based kernel for aokp and other cm based roms.

hi I have unlocked the bootloader of my xperia arc now if I would try the Serene Kernel -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2097138 in the post says I should use the official rom, as I put it with the bootloader unlocked?
Well well well, if you got a stockbased rom, then try it

I am now using the cyanogen 10, so I changed the kernel on the phone, the fact is that I do not know which ROM install after putting the kernel, I also wondered if it would be compatible with cyanogen 9 of Anzu.
ICS kernels will only work with ICS ROMs
JB kernels will only work with JB ROMs
GB kernels will only work with GB ROMs
stock based kernels are compatible with stock based ROMs only.
most (NOT ALL) non stock based kernels are compatible with any cm/Aokp/miui ROMs
so to answer your Q: serene kernel will not work on CM10 because
1) former is for ICS but CM10 is jb
2) cm10 is a non stock based ROM is
Sent from my Xperia Arc S using xda premium
Try out different kernels to see what you like, but be sure that the ROM matches the KERNEL! or it won't boot!

I already know, in fact wondering where I can find the official ROM for bootloader unlocked so as to put the kernel serene.
Hello, i am looking for ICS or JB Roms for my Xperia Play. I don't know how many Roms are excisting, but i am looking for an ICS or JB which i can tweak without additional Apps realy good, and which doesn't need much Memory and Ram and also i can overlclock up to 2.0GHz(not necessary) or i can use the Lupus Kernel.
I have the SlimBean Jelly Bean Rom with the Sony Theme and Sony Addons like Media Apps or Walkman. It´s really fast and for me the best rom

So now i only need one thing, and that is the Lupus v4 Kernel for JB, because thats the last one which i can OC up to 2.0GHz
Jelly Zeus is another good jellybean ROM with Google apps allready installed so you don't have to flash them. Turbo ui is a good kernel to use with it
