Is anyone else's headphones refusing to work? I will plug them in and for a split second I get some sound then nothing. If unplug them it works just fine. If I restart sometimes they will work again but then stop for no reason.
Seems to be in ANY app that makes sounds, I am running Bugless Beast v.3 and it did it in .4 as well. I have the full root (NAND etc)
I rooted and installed a custom rom within hours of getting the phone so I am not sure if it is something with my hardware or the ROMs I am loading. I haven't seen anyone complain so I am guessing it is just me =(
is it a safe bet youve tried these headphones in other players?
have you tried connecting them to any other sort of speaker system?
I have had this problem. I also have Fresh, Bugless Beast, and EVOlution v8. Can't remember off the top of my head if I've tried the phones in each. Like you said though, if I re-boot, pull them out and plug them back in, or both, they start working again. Weird. The earphones work on my laptop. Hasn't been too much of an issue (doesn't happen all the time) so I've been ignoring it. Besides, the sound quality of the phones I have sucks!! I'm ordering new ones soon and I'm hoping that will resolve the issue. Haven't seen anyone else with this problem so I assumed it was the phones (they were SUPER cheap, like $10).
Yes they work other places and in other systems. They are very expensive headphones so I am certain it isn't the headphones issue.
headphone problem
had that also may be the music app you have on the phone or maybe too many music apps. i had mixzing media player, double twist and the standard music app. i took the mixzing player off and had no issues after that. don't know if this is the answer, but something to look at. hope this helps.
I think other users have found that a normal stereo jack doesn't fit right. I heard there is a small adapter to go from the 3 contact stereo to 4 contact stereo with Mic. I haven't looked for it yet.
It's a female trs to male trrs adapter.
kvconnection.com/product-p/km-droid-spkf.htm
I think that will help.

Headset Blocker.
It has something to do with how the jack seats. The widget nukes the mic function and fixes the problem so now all my headphones / car jacks work.
It blocks the headset / mic function so your normal jacks will work without issue. I have been using it since release day and no more problems. Who uses those wired mic/headsets anymore anyhow.......BLUEHAIRS thats who.

I can't answer such a generic question without more information. First, I'm going to assume you mean the earpiece, not the external. Next, I'm going to assume it's STOCK EC05 rooted. So based on that assumption, you likely don't believe you've done anything to your Epic that would cause this kind of error. Then I'm going to take it that, either your question is rhetorical and you believe you have a hardware issue, or you believe that either EC05 or rooting is the cause and you're asking if anyone has had any similar problem with EC05.
I can say that I don't know of any similar problem with rooting or EC05. But seeing as you don't mention whether you're even stock or custom, or whether this problem arrived before or after you rooted, no one will be able to compare their situation to yours. Please enclose better information. The following are my generic solutions:
1. Download Sound Manager and attempt to tweak hidden sound settings.
2. Flash or re-flash a ROM (as I don't know if you're custom or not to begin with).
3. Odin to stock or stock-rooted EB13.
4. Head to your nearest Sprint repair store.
You can find links to everything you need for a fresh start in my signature.

Same issue
All notification sounds and ringtones play through the earpiece instead of the speaker
I had the issue on stock rom figured rooting would fix it.
It did for a couple days and then everything went back to playing through the earpieces as if I was on the phone.
I use a bluetooth car kit often and Im wondering if that has anything to do with it
There may be a simple fix for you. This has happened to me a few times when I have plugged up my Epic to wired headphones. Something about disconnecting can sometimes cause the phone to think it is still outputting sound to the headphones, so you cannot hear sound anymore . . . even with a restart. A simple fix is just to plug in a headphone jack again and remove again. This has fixed this issue for me numerous times.
Lost my sound today
Took the above advise and plugged in a wired headset then unplugged. Worked like a charm...for about 2 hours...then happened again. No matter what I try now, cant get sound again.
B4 u ask:
Been CleanGB/BML w/o any mods or themes for long time.
Havent installed any new apps in days.
No OC/UV
Sounds are fine in wired headset
BT works.
Cleared DV cache and reboot > no fix
ODIN'ed stock EC05 > no fix
---this tells me its not the os, but why did it work after plug/unplug headset?
Yes, Sprint store just down the street, but I love a challenge Anyone?
Same problem. Works fine if I plug in an audio out. But did ring for instant messages for about a day. So speaker does work. Wonder if I should go with the kernel that was orginally flashed with cm9?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
There are two different issues being reported here.
One being, sounds come out of the ear piece and not the speaker (e.g. ring tone during incoming call can be heard with phone up to your head).
The other being no sound at all, unless you connect to the headphone jack.
The latter I would suspect to be a HW problem (loose internal speaker connection maybe?).
The former would be an audio routing issue I've experienced myself (usually related to BT, speaker-phone, etc).
A simple reboot should fix the routing issue (has for me a few times).
=]
If u Odin back to stock and it still doesn't work then its probly hardware. I tried everything thinking it was sw but ended up replacing the speaker.

I have the exact same issue, if I plug in headphones it will work through speaker, nothing connected it thinks headphones are connected. I have to jam a eyelet from my shoes in there, and connect it to bluetooth to hear audio...
So I ain't the only one...
Went back to stock, same difference, nothing I know will correct it...

Wrong forum, this is galaxy s1 epic 4g with keyboard.
Sorry if this is a repeat, I couldn't find this issue.
When I plug in the headphone jack there is no recognizable audio. Fiddling with the AUX cord plugged into the phone produces buzzing and popping.
I thought it might be a hardware problem so I tried a new ROM and then problem went away. So I figured it was just that ROM.
But the next time I plugged into the audio jack the problem had returned. I tried a couple more ROMs with an identical result. Basically after each fresh install it works for like one attempt.
Does anyone know how I can determine if this is a hardware issue or not (flash stock and unroot then try?) and then how to proceed from there?
Thanks!

I would honestly return that phone for another one. That sounds like a hardware issue with the jack itself or the sound chip.
Hey I'm having just about the same problem as you are with my headphones.
Can you possibly try something for me, I am running a TW from nun hugger with the preus kernel. There is a app that comes with the room where you can make adjustments to the sound output. See if you can decrease output and if that takes away the crackling.

Ok so I'm running Jedi X. There is an app called Voodoo Sound which seems to have the same setting your talking about. I turned them down and nothing seemed different.
Next I turned them all the way down (headphone amplifier: -57db and volume limit: -57db)
Then I tried to play an audio book. This time I hear buzzing with each word. Its also clear now that you are in fact listening to someone speak (even though I still cant make anything out) before I would only hear a random buzz and would mostly hear silence in between the buzzing and crackling.
Just a couple q's:
Have you tried different headphones? Maybe a dual 3.5mm cord to some speakers?
Are you pushing the headphones in all the way? (I didn't my first time)
What type of headphones are you using?
Last, is the jack loose (wobly/free floating).
I have a pair of older samsung headphones that somehow got snagged and the wire was pulled partially apart on the inside. When I use them I have the same problem that you are describing. They also produce a lot of static electricity and shock my ears while using them lol.

Hey leptone,
I tried voodoo as well but if you've tried what Brad was mentioning about making sure your headphones weren't buggered
I would highly recommend trying the Presues kernel with any other rom just because saber and Jedi are built together.
Try skynote or the Alliance rom (novella dos), or any other TW rom.
Now I'm not saying anything against the Jedi dev. I ran his rom on my phone for a week before I saw that Sean was developing for this phone, and even then I had saber as my kernel of choice. It's just the fact that even though we all run the same phone and hardware there are slight variations and to find the best setup you will have to put some effort in to try the combinations.

Hi
I'm having a really unbearable problem with the headphone jack - any slight knocks to the headphone connector cause the track to skip or pause - as if I were pressing buttons on a button controller. My headphones are mid-range Shures (i.e. high build quality) and do not cause this behaviour on other phones. Has anyone had anything similar? Or have any suggested workarounds? It makes it basically impossible to use the phone to listen to music with whilst walking...
Many thanks

Yes: I get that behaviour too.
Took mine back to the shop for a replacement. Seems to be fine on the new handset.
Same problems here. Returned the first one to Best Buy,and the new one has the same problem. It's it just a software update to fix it?
Same here. Touching or slightly tapping the headphone plug either pauses/skips the track or opens up Voicemate (which cannot be disabled in settings). There has to be some software running that 'manages' audio connections.
I tried LG support and they didn't address the issue at all but said it might warrant an RMA.
Mine was fine for two weeks and just noticed the problem today. It's highly frustrating.
Update: noticed for some reason sometimes when the headphones are plugged in it recognises it as a headset and thats when knocking the phone jack either triggers voicemate or skips tracks. If you get it to recognise it as headphones it seems to be fine.
Same here. Sometimes with my audio cable it recognizes it as headphones. Sometimes when I plug in the audio cable it doesn't work at all unless I unplug it a few times. Overall volume for audio cable and Bluetooth is pretty low too.
Last two days the problems got worse for me to the point I can't get it to detect my headphones properly, always a headset. I did notice however that if it detects it as a headset the volume would be quieter even on the same sound setting.
To stop the annoying issue for now, as I use PowerAmp, I have enabled the PowerAmp lockscreen widget and disabled the headset controls. As I never use a headset (BT or otherwise) this seems to have stopped the knocks skipping tracks for me.

Yep I can confirm above fixed issue and besides PowerAmp S**ts on stock player.
I have only noticed it in my cars when listening to Spotify . I use an aux port and a 3.5 mm cable in both. My issue is the phone not recognizing a cable is plugged in some of the time. I have to repeatedly unplug and replug until it recognizes it. Seems to work better if I unplug from the stereo rather than the phone. It had also kicked off a few times between songs. So far it's been fine with headphones, but very limited use, so inconclusive. I'm not sure if the cause, but stinks of a software bug.

Same here except it happens when I'm using Google Maps to navigate on my bike..........any little bump on the road and it goes to Voice Activation. It's really annoying and frustrating
I have to unplug and plug the cable several times in the car before it will recognize an aux connection. Thinking of trying a different cable, who knows, it might help. But it does sound like a software problem rather than a hardware one

I contacted customer service (UK) regarding this matter. This is what they replied and I quote:-
Hi Steven,
Thank you for your query regarding your LG G3 (D855).
After reading through your email and looking into this for you I can advise that the problem you are experiencing is going to be down to the phone using the KnockOn Function against your leg. In this instance we would like you to try and face the phone screen so it is not touching your leg when it is in your pocket and to make sure there is nothing else in the pocket with your G3.
This could also be affected by the Genuine LG G3 head/earphones not being used. Please make sure you are using the correct Head/earphones whilst performing the above test.
If you still experience a problem after doing this then we would highly advise for you to contact us back so we are able to investigate this further and resolve this for you.
We hope this works for you Steven.
I hope my email has answered your query and assisted you today; I would really appreciate your feedback. Please help us to improve our customer service by completing the short survey after this email.
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards
Josh

Same problem
I am getting the same issue where Headphone jack: slight knocks change track.
I read Stevemiddies post about what LG said. (good work Steve for raising to them) and I dont see how it be down to the "knock on". I have taken phone out and cant replicate issue by "knocking" the phone anywhere. But the smallest of touches on the headphone input to the LGG3 causes it to pause or skip tracks...
I also read Kinnyfaifais post about how using poweramp can stop this. Great bit of advice. but i dont really want to have to pay for poweramp to fix an issue which LG should fix..it cant be right that a phone with headphones cant be put in your pocket!!! I have the quick circle case too.

For sure the response from LG was not really relevant to this issue.
I have used my Shure SE 535's, Sennheisers, Klipch's and of course the LG supplied headphones. The problem remains.
I don't believe it has anything to do with the 'knock code' personally. The problems happen every time I move the headphone jack at the point of entry to the phone.
I also have the Poweramp Pro version but despite following previous posters advice, it has not resolved the problem.
It remains deeply frustrating.

Yup! It seems to have stopped it, not triggered at all since I disabled it.
Weird thing started happening to my phone: when I plug in a pair of headphones (with or without mic) the phone does not detect that they are plugged in! Sound always comes out of the speakers. I've used apps like SoundAbout to force sound of the headset jack and it seems to do the trick. But as you know, this just spoofs the phone... it still thinks it's using the speakers so you'll lose mic capabilities.
The odd thing is that if I turn off my phone, plug in a pair of headphones, and then continue to turn my phone back on... once booted the phone will recognize that it has a pair of headphones plugged in and everything will be fine. Won't work when I unplug and try to replug. It only detects the headphones on boot.
1) Is there a solution to this?
2) Anyone know how the mechanics of this works? It seems like on boot it always tries to check if there are headphones... but something mechanical in the headphone jack triggers the check after boot (may mean I have a mechanical failure)?
3) Is there a way to force headphone mode, more so than what Soundabout does? It's a pain to lose the mic, I use it a lot.
Here are other pertinents:
- Running newest SkyDragon Lollipop GPE rom with Sense Firmware... don't think it's the rom because it worked just last week
- Only recently started happening, not sure what could have caused it
- Noticed the phone always tries to update HTC Service pack, I think I fixed that issue
- Have yet to try cleaning, need to get rubbing alcohol
Thanks for any help anyone can provide me.

I was experiencing the same problem and I know it is not the hardware since I was able to go back to 4.4.4. GPE and get music thru the headset like you. I tried to get an answer from other contributors but they think it is the jack. Anyway below is what I've wrote to get help.

Thank you for the feedback on personal data. (I appreciated it)
So I've did a factory reset and start flashing the "Stock Google Play Edition Rom LXR22C.H5" rom again.
Since I'm Rooted, this is the one I've flash: RUU-HTC_One_M8_GPE_5.0.1-3.11.1700.5_rooted
I've followed the instruction on #2031. Everything else work.... again only plugging in the headset into the jack, does switch music from speakers to headset.
As mentioned before I've upgrade my Stock AT&T HTC One (M8) to GPE 4.4.2 and automatically received all the updates OTA to get to 4.4.4 (Audio was working thru headset and/or speakers with no problems)
The only problem with 4.4.4 is that you don't have access to SD storage. (though I found a patch to update in the system, but haven't tried it)
I like the speed, simplicity of 5.0.1. That is why I keep on trying.
Also I tried changing the Kernel - using skydragon kernel (still same problem with audio). But when I used the kernel for 4.4.4 of GPE, the booting hung at HTC logo before it showed the dead android.
So I'm lost for option other than using an app to manual switch to headset from speaker....(bummer)
Anyway new ideas to proceed are appreciated.

Yeah that makes no sense why it would be hardware since you reverted back to 4.4.4 and it worked again.
The other reason why I don't think it's completely hardware is that, as I mentioned before, if you turn off the phone and then leave headphones plugged in while booting up the phone will recognize them. However, unplugging after boot will permanently lose headphone detection until you leave headphones plugged in during a fresh boot.
I'm thinking that either the software is not calling IsHeadphonePluggedIn (hypothetical) when the hardware is triggered (headphone plugged in), but always calls IsHeadphonePluggedIn when the phone boots. OR, the hardware trigger that tells the phone to call IsHeadphonePluggedIn is truly broken leaving cold boot the only method to detect headphones.
Maybe I'll try downgrading at some point but the weird thing is that I swore this was working without any major ROM updates... like just last week! For the time being, I'm using bluetooth.

Not sure if you've ever used Tasker but you should download that. They have a trigger for "headphone plugged in," and I'd be curious to see if it triggered when you plug in your headphones. You could just have it play a sound or something when it senses headphones. If that works, then it's whatever service handles that hardware interrupt, not the interrupt itself.

Yes, I have and use Tasker. In fact, I have a Profile for headphone or bluetooth headset detection. This is how I know the phone is definitively detecting my headphones on boot—the designated Tasker action triggers and I get the Profile highlighted as active.
When I unplug the headphones, Tasker responds accordingly and runs the exist task and the profile is no longer highlighted. When I try to replug, Tasker doesn't do anything. Headphones not detected.
Another tidbit I've discovered:
- Safe mode doesn't help with headphone detection. In fact, there is none even after cold boots. Tried safe mode to isolate any 3rd party apps that might be causing issues.
- To clarify about reboots. The phone needs to be shutdown completely and turned on while the headphones are plugged in to detect. Issuing a reboot via APM doesn't really work, I don't think.
Straaaange.

I'm checking in again to see if anyone solved the headphone detection issue with 5.0.1. As you mentioned about powering down the phone (and not reboot) does detect the headphone, but after you unplug the headphone it revert back to the speakers. No change when you reinsert the jack for the headphone. I've tried all custom roms that uses 5.0.1 and none works with the headphone. Right now I'm still running GPE 4.4.4 on my AT&T One M8. I really like the features of 5.0.1 but not interested in a dual approach to listen to music in my headphone. Let me know if anyone find a new technique that will work with our M8. (I don't think anyone have been able to get the AT&T version of M8 to work with the headphone on 5.0.1.....If I'm wrong please share......)

I did come across a solution, but it may be unique to me. It's entirely hardware related. Just inside the headphone jack, there is a small connector. I used a pin to pry it out slightly. After doing this, plugging headphones in works like normal. That outer most pin must be the trigger that tells the phone to check if there is a headphone connected.
However, as I mentioned, even without this pin being activated I can still get the phone to detect the headphone buy just cold starting the phone. It may be a difference in how 4.4.4 and 5.0.1 uses the hardware on the phone. I have no clue, it's annoying nonetheless.
So give that a shot!

Interesting.....Did you open your M8 to pry the pin? I tried looking inside the jack but can't see any pin. Plus I looked at the disassembly video on you-tude for the M8 and said, no way (smile). So I'm willing to try but I can't see the pin you're talking about. Is there a diagram you can point me too? Or provide more information. Very much appreciated...

Haha no way I'd open the phone. If you look into the headphone jack with the screen facing up, the pin should be near the 1'o'clock position. It's hard to see so use a flashlight or something. It's very close to the opening, 2-3mm deep only.
Maybe you need to change the whole headphone jack. There's a DIY video on youtube for it. Just give it a try if there isn't any other solution.

Well I've reinstalled 5.0.1 and tried digging into the jack, trying to move the 1pm pin just a few centimeters....well I finally gave up. I was not able to make it work and I got concerned that I would damage the jack, which will cost me a fortune in repair bills. (smile)
Thank you for recommendation....I guess I will use the soundabout app until AT&T release the one for our M8.

Can you explain in more detail when you say "wipe the data".....Are you referring, go into recovery and do a data wipe? or go into an app (which app) and clear the cache or something?
If you can give me the step by step procedures I would appreciate it.
Also did you try this on a "AT&T HTC One M8" versus a HTC One M8? because I'm beginning to notice that there is a very slight difference between the two.
Thanks,

Thanks for the advise....
Geee.......I've been using these Klipsch headphones for all my mobile phones and it has been working on 4.2 to 4.4.4. Once I've upgraded the rom to 5.0.1 audio stop going through the klipsch headphone. Going back to 4.4.4 (lucky I made a Nand backup) it started working again. So I tried several different methods from several people and nothing worked.
Since I tried, what you said, resetting the phone....and of course it still didn't work with the Klipsch headphone.
dah....are you seeing the pattern. Finally the light came on and I decided at the last minute, before restoring 4.4.4 rom, was to find my old Bose headphones and try it.....Wow. It worked but I had to try plugging it in and out to see if it continued working.....AND...yes it continue to play music through the Bose headphone. (tried the Klipsch again and had the same old - not working)
The only difference between the Bose and the Klipsch is that the Klipsch has three rings on the jack. The third one is used to control the player....i.e. skip/stop/pause. The Bose has only two rings on the jack....(just music input)
For others that are experiencing the "No Music thru the headphones" when you install 5.0......check the jack for two vs three rings.
Thanks again for the insight.... (problem solved - closed case)

If you do want to use your klipsch headphones, however, you can just use a standard 3.5mm extension cord in the middle. I've used this trick in the past with an old Nokia and my htc earphones
