Headphone problems - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone else's headphones refusing to work? I will plug them in and for a split second I get some sound then nothing. If unplug them it works just fine. If I restart sometimes they will work again but then stop for no reason.
Seems to be in ANY app that makes sounds, I am running Bugless Beast v.3 and it did it in .4 as well. I have the full root (NAND etc)
I rooted and installed a custom rom within hours of getting the phone so I am not sure if it is something with my hardware or the ROMs I am loading. I haven't seen anyone complain so I am guessing it is just me =(

is it a safe bet youve tried these headphones in other players?
have you tried connecting them to any other sort of speaker system?

I have had this problem. I also have Fresh, Bugless Beast, and EVOlution v8. Can't remember off the top of my head if I've tried the phones in each. Like you said though, if I re-boot, pull them out and plug them back in, or both, they start working again. Weird. The earphones work on my laptop. Hasn't been too much of an issue (doesn't happen all the time) so I've been ignoring it. Besides, the sound quality of the phones I have sucks!! I'm ordering new ones soon and I'm hoping that will resolve the issue. Haven't seen anyone else with this problem so I assumed it was the phones (they were SUPER cheap, like $10).

Yes they work other places and in other systems. They are very expensive headphones so I am certain it isn't the headphones issue.

headphone problem
had that also may be the music app you have on the phone or maybe too many music apps. i had mixzing media player, double twist and the standard music app. i took the mixzing player off and had no issues after that. don't know if this is the answer, but something to look at. hope this helps.

I think other users have found that a normal stereo jack doesn't fit right. I heard there is a small adapter to go from the 3 contact stereo to 4 contact stereo with Mic. I haven't looked for it yet.
It's a female trs to male trrs adapter.
kvconnection.com/product-p/km-droid-spkf.htm
I think that will help.

Headset Blocker.
It has something to do with how the jack seats. The widget nukes the mic function and fixes the problem so now all my headphones / car jacks work.
It blocks the headset / mic function so your normal jacks will work without issue. I have been using it since release day and no more problems. Who uses those wired mic/headsets anymore anyhow.......BLUEHAIRS thats who.

ICS Bluetooth Media Woes

I feel like I'm the only one who's been struggling with Bluetooth media since the ICS leaks started rolling out and as it seems like we're getting closer to a final build I'm getting worried.
So I often stream audiobooks and music via Bluetooth from my phone to my Sony XPLOD BT3900 aftermarket head unit. This worked just great on the GB ROM. However, on the ICS ROMs, my phone will randomly hot reboot in the middle of playing something. This includes the stock player, Power Amp, Mort Audiobook Player and Google Music. The audio cuts out, Bluetooth disconnects and the screen goes to the Sprint bootanimation screen with no sound, then quickly reloads the OS. I have to toggle Bluetooth off then on again on both the stereo and the phone in order to get it to reconnect.
If I turn off Media audio in the Bluetooth settings, just using Phone audio, and connect to the stereo via the Aux port, it works just fine with no reboots, so this is definitely a software issue (worked fine on GB) involving Bluetooth media (phone audio is fine) that may or may not be isolated to my particular stereo.
So I have to ask ... is anyone else experiencing anything the same or similar? Or does anyone have any suggestions as to what the cause may be other than simple incompatibility? It's been bumming me out as I hate having to plug a cable in every time I get behind the wheel.
Had the EXACT same thing happen to me at work today as my phone was linked to a Monster Micro Bluetooth Speaker . . . thought it was my ROM or recent flash that did it but I guess not. It does not happen to me in my car when I have my phone linked to my Motorola bluetooth car received and then my audio linked to my bluetooth jack . . . only seems to happen if both are linked to the same unit. Maybe FD02 will change all that.
I have the same problem and I am looking for a solution!!!
I stream music via Bluetooth in my truck everytime I drive. I connect it to a car dock. I have noticed that the phone seems hot when I pull it out but haven't really tried to figure out why. I thought maybe it was the sun going thru the windshield heating it up bit now I may not buy that.
I've done this with every ics build and am currently on cm9 a2. Never had a reboot though.

Thanks for your feedback, I don't know why you are able to stream music through bluetooth! I have read a lot of threads about this issue and nobody can solve it until now.
Jabra Clip Won't Pair with E4GT
I had no problem using this device on GB based ROMs but once i switched over to the ICS Leaks completely lost the ability to pair with my Device, I hope there is a resolutions to this issue, I can confirm this is still an issue as of FD02.
Running calks 1.4 and have no issues with Bluetooth streaming to Ford sync or my Bluetooth receiver listening to music with subsonic or tune in radio just fyi not trying to be a **** i feel your pain

Yup, works great with Ford's Sync. Picked up a 2012 Ford Focus the other day, and it's great.
Cm9 a2 working flawlessly. Had trouble with almost every other ics rom though.

what ics bluetooth problems as of now?
The problem is that when my gs2 is paired by bluetooth with my Sony MEX-BT3900U, it reboots every about fifteen minutes. It has been happened since I have updated my phone to ICS and not with Gingerbread.
If I just switch on bluetooth, it doesn't happen.
I know this is an older thread but I am having the same issue and I'm trying to search for a fix. It only started happening when I switched from GB to ICS. I also have a sony head unit. Anyone find a fix yet?

Well I switched to a JB rom and all is good. Must have been an ICS problem.

[Q] What's wrong with my headphone port?

Phone is running Franco's m4 kernel with AOKP's m5 ROM.
When using my headphones with my nexus it works fine.
When I plug my auxiliary cable into my headphone port and connect it in my car (or any car for that matter) I can play music through the phone fine for about 10 seconds. Then the volume will automatically mute the music and stop the music as if i had pulled the cable out of my phone, which isn't the case. I thought maybe it was the cable causing me trouble, but that's not the case. I've tried 3 different cables and all the same results. Thought maybe it was my car, but I've tried 3 different cars as well and same result.
The odd thing is I can listen to pandora fine without any oddities, but when i try to use any other music player like google or 8tracks it does the auto muting as if the cable had been pulled out.
Anyone experiencing this issue or has had it in the past? I've never had this problem up until last month or so. Is my headphone port (going) bad? Should I file an insurance replacement claim? if I do, is it easy to return the phone back to lock state; I have the stock rom backed up, but my concern is about having to put it back to a locked bootloader if i have to get an insurance claim.
Could this be a conflict with an app I have or a setting I have with in franco's kernal updater or AOKP's ROM settings? I've ran fix permissions and that didn't help anything. Any advice or input is greatly appreciated, if no help then I'll just file for insurance to replace it.
logfile
For anyone that can or wants to help me here is my logfile while my phone was doing this random muting of the music. I don't know what to look for in the log so someone with more expertise would probably get some benefit from it.
*I can't link things yet according to my post count even though I've been apart of the forums for 2 years. So just copy and paste the link.

Turn of the sound boost mod = profit.
It seems to expose weaknesses in cheap-o aux cords and headphones.
I have the same problem with my aux cord.
Ezeekel (creator of sound-boost) said he'd get around to fixing it when he had time.

I thought that might be an issue. I'm using volume+ app to boost the speaker volume as well as franco's small volume boost mod within his kernel manager.
I was planning to test the difference tonight with them off and on, but I was out in the car attempting to test it. And I didn't encounter any of my problems for the first time in 1-2 months. However, it seemed fine until i rotated the aux cord jack slightly inside of the phone port and then i started experiencing the same problems again. I still never got around to testing without the volume mods, but I'll get around to that this week and see if there is any difference.
I appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

Headphone not detected?

Weird thing started happening to my phone: when I plug in a pair of headphones (with or without mic) the phone does not detect that they are plugged in! Sound always comes out of the speakers. I've used apps like SoundAbout to force sound of the headset jack and it seems to do the trick. But as you know, this just spoofs the phone... it still thinks it's using the speakers so you'll lose mic capabilities.
The odd thing is that if I turn off my phone, plug in a pair of headphones, and then continue to turn my phone back on... once booted the phone will recognize that it has a pair of headphones plugged in and everything will be fine. Won't work when I unplug and try to replug. It only detects the headphones on boot.
1) Is there a solution to this?
2) Anyone know how the mechanics of this works? It seems like on boot it always tries to check if there are headphones... but something mechanical in the headphone jack triggers the check after boot (may mean I have a mechanical failure)?
3) Is there a way to force headphone mode, more so than what Soundabout does? It's a pain to lose the mic, I use it a lot.
Here are other pertinents:
- Running newest SkyDragon Lollipop GPE rom with Sense Firmware... don't think it's the rom because it worked just last week
- Only recently started happening, not sure what could have caused it
- Noticed the phone always tries to update HTC Service pack, I think I fixed that issue
- Have yet to try cleaning, need to get rubbing alcohol
Thanks for any help anyone can provide me.

I was experiencing the same problem and I know it is not the hardware since I was able to go back to 4.4.4. GPE and get music thru the headset like you. I tried to get an answer from other contributors but they think it is the jack. Anyway below is what I've wrote to get help.

Thank you for the feedback on personal data. (I appreciated it)
So I've did a factory reset and start flashing the "Stock Google Play Edition Rom LXR22C.H5" rom again.
Since I'm Rooted, this is the one I've flash: RUU-HTC_One_M8_GPE_5.0.1-3.11.1700.5_rooted
I've followed the instruction on #2031. Everything else work.... again only plugging in the headset into the jack, does switch music from speakers to headset.
As mentioned before I've upgrade my Stock AT&T HTC One (M8) to GPE 4.4.2 and automatically received all the updates OTA to get to 4.4.4 (Audio was working thru headset and/or speakers with no problems)
The only problem with 4.4.4 is that you don't have access to SD storage. (though I found a patch to update in the system, but haven't tried it)
I like the speed, simplicity of 5.0.1. That is why I keep on trying.
Also I tried changing the Kernel - using skydragon kernel (still same problem with audio). But when I used the kernel for 4.4.4 of GPE, the booting hung at HTC logo before it showed the dead android.
So I'm lost for option other than using an app to manual switch to headset from speaker....(bummer)
Anyway new ideas to proceed are appreciated.

Yeah that makes no sense why it would be hardware since you reverted back to 4.4.4 and it worked again.
The other reason why I don't think it's completely hardware is that, as I mentioned before, if you turn off the phone and then leave headphones plugged in while booting up the phone will recognize them. However, unplugging after boot will permanently lose headphone detection until you leave headphones plugged in during a fresh boot.
I'm thinking that either the software is not calling IsHeadphonePluggedIn (hypothetical) when the hardware is triggered (headphone plugged in), but always calls IsHeadphonePluggedIn when the phone boots. OR, the hardware trigger that tells the phone to call IsHeadphonePluggedIn is truly broken leaving cold boot the only method to detect headphones.
Maybe I'll try downgrading at some point but the weird thing is that I swore this was working without any major ROM updates... like just last week! For the time being, I'm using bluetooth.

Not sure if you've ever used Tasker but you should download that. They have a trigger for "headphone plugged in," and I'd be curious to see if it triggered when you plug in your headphones. You could just have it play a sound or something when it senses headphones. If that works, then it's whatever service handles that hardware interrupt, not the interrupt itself.

Yes, I have and use Tasker. In fact, I have a Profile for headphone or bluetooth headset detection. This is how I know the phone is definitively detecting my headphones on boot—the designated Tasker action triggers and I get the Profile highlighted as active.
When I unplug the headphones, Tasker responds accordingly and runs the exist task and the profile is no longer highlighted. When I try to replug, Tasker doesn't do anything. Headphones not detected.
Another tidbit I've discovered:
- Safe mode doesn't help with headphone detection. In fact, there is none even after cold boots. Tried safe mode to isolate any 3rd party apps that might be causing issues.
- To clarify about reboots. The phone needs to be shutdown completely and turned on while the headphones are plugged in to detect. Issuing a reboot via APM doesn't really work, I don't think.
Straaaange.

I'm checking in again to see if anyone solved the headphone detection issue with 5.0.1. As you mentioned about powering down the phone (and not reboot) does detect the headphone, but after you unplug the headphone it revert back to the speakers. No change when you reinsert the jack for the headphone. I've tried all custom roms that uses 5.0.1 and none works with the headphone. Right now I'm still running GPE 4.4.4 on my AT&T One M8. I really like the features of 5.0.1 but not interested in a dual approach to listen to music in my headphone. Let me know if anyone find a new technique that will work with our M8. (I don't think anyone have been able to get the AT&T version of M8 to work with the headphone on 5.0.1.....If I'm wrong please share......)

I did come across a solution, but it may be unique to me. It's entirely hardware related. Just inside the headphone jack, there is a small connector. I used a pin to pry it out slightly. After doing this, plugging headphones in works like normal. That outer most pin must be the trigger that tells the phone to check if there is a headphone connected.
However, as I mentioned, even without this pin being activated I can still get the phone to detect the headphone buy just cold starting the phone. It may be a difference in how 4.4.4 and 5.0.1 uses the hardware on the phone. I have no clue, it's annoying nonetheless.
So give that a shot!

Interesting.....Did you open your M8 to pry the pin? I tried looking inside the jack but can't see any pin. Plus I looked at the disassembly video on you-tude for the M8 and said, no way (smile). So I'm willing to try but I can't see the pin you're talking about. Is there a diagram you can point me too? Or provide more information. Very much appreciated...

Haha no way I'd open the phone. If you look into the headphone jack with the screen facing up, the pin should be near the 1'o'clock position. It's hard to see so use a flashlight or something. It's very close to the opening, 2-3mm deep only.
Maybe you need to change the whole headphone jack. There's a DIY video on youtube for it. Just give it a try if there isn't any other solution.

Well I've reinstalled 5.0.1 and tried digging into the jack, trying to move the 1pm pin just a few centimeters....well I finally gave up. I was not able to make it work and I got concerned that I would damage the jack, which will cost me a fortune in repair bills. (smile)
Thank you for recommendation....I guess I will use the soundabout app until AT&T release the one for our M8.

Can you explain in more detail when you say "wipe the data".....Are you referring, go into recovery and do a data wipe? or go into an app (which app) and clear the cache or something?
If you can give me the step by step procedures I would appreciate it.
Also did you try this on a "AT&T HTC One M8" versus a HTC One M8? because I'm beginning to notice that there is a very slight difference between the two.
Thanks,

Geee.......I've been using these Klipsch headphones for all my mobile phones and it has been working on 4.2 to 4.4.4. Once I've upgraded the rom to 5.0.1 audio stop going through the klipsch headphone. Going back to 4.4.4 (lucky I made a Nand backup) it started working again. So I tried several different methods from several people and nothing worked.
Since I tried, what you said, resetting the phone....and of course it still didn't work with the Klipsch headphone.
dah....are you seeing the pattern. Finally the light came on and I decided at the last minute, before restoring 4.4.4 rom, was to find my old Bose headphones and try it.....Wow. It worked but I had to try plugging it in and out to see if it continued working.....AND...yes it continue to play music through the Bose headphone. (tried the Klipsch again and had the same old - not working)
The only difference between the Bose and the Klipsch is that the Klipsch has three rings on the jack. The third one is used to control the player....i.e. skip/stop/pause. The Bose has only two rings on the jack....(just music input)
For others that are experiencing the "No Music thru the headphones" when you install 5.0......check the jack for two vs three rings.
Thanks again for the insight.... (problem solved - closed case)

If you do want to use your klipsch headphones, however, you can just use a standard 3.5mm extension cord in the middle. I've used this trick in the past with an old Nokia and my htc earphones

If you do want to use your klipsch headphones, however, you can just use a standard 3.5mm extension cord in the middle. I've used this trick in the past with an old Nokia and my htc earphones

Headphone Jack & Speakers Problem

Hey all,
So I was using my 32GB Nexus 7 (2013), and the speakers weren't working at all. I tried playing different audio (music, videos, system UI sounds, etc) and none of it was making any sound. I also tried doing the same through the headphone jack, and nothing was being played either. I tried many different ROMs (MIUI, Cyanogenmod, Stock) to see if it was just a software problem, and it still was occurring in all three. In MIUI, there was a headphone jack icon in the status bar, so I know the system recognized there was something in the headphone jack whenever I plugged headphones it. It just wouldn't play anything. Bluetooth audio works perfectly fine though for all of the above though.
I'm not sure how to go about fixing this issue or even if I should. I'm assuming it's a hardware issue, but I'm not sure if I should attempt to replace anything in it. It seems like too much of a hassle for an old device, plus I wouldn't want to break it altogether. I'm tempted just to buy a new tablet (maybe the Nexus 9, not too sure on that) and just use that as sort of like a car dash mount for GPS, music, etc. since the bluetooth works perfectly fine.
If anyone is able to help, that'd be awesome! Thanks.

Sounds like a blown speaker to me. If you started hearing hisses and pops prior to total audio failure, it's almost certainly a hardware/speaker problem, but even if you didn't, the fact that the headphone jack seems to at least be recognizing a connection and you can't get any audio hints at that as well. If you already reverted to stock, unrooted, and locked bootloader, and still no love, and you're out of warranty/have no receipt, your options are left at contacting the manufacturer or trying to obtain and install replacement parts yourself.

Sound issues with 3,5mm headset on usb c (adapted), electrical crack on (un)plug then

Hi
just set up the device and all went fine, trying youtube music for the first time.
after some seconds the music disappeared with crackle sound through ehadset on highest volume.
unplugging and replugging the 3,5mm headset through adapter that came with device on usb c there was an electrical crack sound in the headset when un- and replugging.
closing the app and relaunching worked for a short time then sound disappeared on one ear. same crack in ears on (un)plugging.
second headset no difference, but then it works without any issues when using headset volume just one step below max volume.
so this is a known issue on that device, software thing or hardware thing?
evreything else is fine, should we cross check built in speaker on highest volume for crackles to chekc the hardware or do headset through usb c and built in speaker run throught two different output stage/amplifier circuits?
thx for any help
Yea this is happening. There is another thread here also talking about it. It drives me crazy... Seems to be software related (hope so), as some people said installing another rom solves the issue. I also noticed (at least until now) that the problem seems to involve instagram, everytime I had this issue, I checked and instagram was opened on background. I don't remember having the issue when I close instagram beforr plugging the headphone. Not sure about the relation though, still needs to test more.
I will install xiaomi.eu rom soon to test if this happens there also.
Btw, what miui version are you running?

Whatsapp aswell is a big issue. Some people said replacing the typec/jack adaptor works.. but i dont have another one for the moment to test.
ah, just saw the other thread, 2 sites already
so at least no hardware issue, at least not the device, maybe the adapter
thought about buying bluetooth or usb headset anyway as i think even if only some grams the 3,5 on the adapter always tears a little bit on the cord/usb c plug over weeks/months/years and might affect the port
after a restart and reinstalling youtube music i could not reproduce it anymore
have been listening half an hour music without any issues and had a phone call another 25 minutes with headset without sound issues
running global version with
global 10.2.9.0 PFBEUXM
while PFBEUXM should stand for eu anyway?
is there a way to flash another official rom without rooting/unlocking the device and loosing warranty?
thx
