[Q] Problem with Galaxy S3 turns on quickly then off - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I was casually sending a message when randomly the phone turned off. I thought it was just a random reboot but then the phone would not turn on. I tried turning on and no response so I took the battery out and placed it back in. It vibrated and I saw the "Samsung" logo and then it turned off. I plugged it into a wall charger and the phone would not respond at all. I took it out and took the battery out and put it back again only to get the same quick turn off. I tried going into recovery and same thing. It passes the "Samsung" and then turns off. I also tried to get into download mode which I did for around 5 seconds until the phone shut off. I do not know why it would do this... it had around 40% battery. Has anyone ever heard of this problem before?

It's called sudden death syndrome. It's a failure in the power button. Take it back to sprint it's a known defect in the power button.

Thank you very much. I was actually able to blow air into the power button and mess with it a little and it fixed the problem. Again thank you!

That will work for a little while then it will happen again. Same thing happened to my wife's phone. Sprint replaced it no problem.

okay so i have this exact problem. Only thing is Sprint wont send me a replacement over the phone even though i have insurance. I also cant go to a store because the phone has a small crack from months ago and apparently they can't even troubleshoot it. Im not paying $150 for a replacement i hate this Sprint insurance so much. Is there anything you guys know i could do?

So your saying they will not look into the issue because they believe it is related to the crack ? They should at least be willing to look at the device. Have you taken it in, or just called ?

I would call Sprint back. Try going higher up the food chain. Eventually you will get to someone who can help.

It's a hardware failure so yes. Or they repair it.

Just a quick update for those in the future. I took the phone to a sprint repair center and they are going to replace it. I just had to pay $50 for the exchange. I didn't have any insurance either. I am happy that I didn't end up with a paper holder and have to buy a new phone off contract.

Managed to get my phone back to normal this morning but I'm sure it won't be for too long, if my screen is cracked, even if I have insurance, does them replacing it go out the window?

I'd say it depends on where you go, and who you end up dealing with. Some of the CS people genuinely want to help the customer. Some will look for any excuse to be difficult. It will also depend if the button looks damaged from outside impact / incident.

It Might be the Battery !
Have you tried changing the Battery ??
I faced quite a similar problem with my Galaxy Y. It got switched Off and then won't boot back ! You can try replacing your Battery. !

[Q] Possibly bricked evo, wont turn on at all

This is probably completely a result of my stupidity but I rooted my phone a while ago. I had a nandroid back up set before i flashed to any custom roms just in case anything happened. Then i flashed to the back up again and wasn't running any custom roms. it was just still rooted because i never got a chance to unroot it. I then installed an update not thinking about it at all and im pretty sure bricked my phone. When it first happened it had two green arrows in a circle around another green arrow pointing down at a picture of a phone. I pulled the battery and drove home all day. I just got home and tried to turn it on and nothing is working. The charge light is not coming on when it is plugged in, vol up+ power and vol down+power button doesnt work. it seems like nothing i can do can turn this phone on. any ideas on how i can fix this?
ps. i have also checked and made sure the battery works and everything

i didnt pull during the installation. i let it download and install and it rebooted by itself. so it seems like everything was installed properly it just bricked afterwards any idea? thanks for the help though
If you pulled the battery during the arrow pointing at the phone stage, you're bricked. That was most likely a radio update, and pulling the battery during that will give you a phone that'll never turn on again.
When exactly did you pull the battery?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
yeah, you can't pull the bettery with that logo on, sometimes after an update the phone will go into that mode where it seems unresponsive but it always pulls through. If you pulled it out during that time then the previous posters are correct and you likely have a very handy paper weight (hope you have insurance, or have a clean phone that has no damage so you can claim a warranty issue). If you didn't pull the battery during this time and it just died or powered off on you then you could have a battery issue, while unlikely it doesn't mean that it isn't possible. I would take the advice and let it sit on the charger overnight, if that doesn't wory then I would just take it to sprint and play dumb. If it's bricked and won't turn on then they won't be able to tell that it was rooted, just say you plugged it in at night and woke up and it was dead. Not that i'm an advocate of screwing sprint, but we put up with ****ty wimax so whatcha gonna do....
yep, if you got insurance just go to sprint and tell them you updated to 2.3 and then it just shut off
damn, i didnt realize that it was still updating. thanks for the heads up, it's definitely bricked lol but i have insurance thankfully. best way to go about getting a new phone? is there a specific excuse i should use or just play dumb? but thanks for all the help. i really do appreciate it

As others before me have stated, just tell sprint that you ran the "new update" and it restarted your phone and now it does not work.
Make sure you don't mention anything about being rooted or pulling out the battery....

It wasn't root that bricked his phone, it was HTC and Sprint pushing an update without instructing users properly. He pulled the battery thinking it was stuck. It was an accident. Just like dropping or losing your phone. That's what insurance is for.

[Q] Power Button Issue

This all started yesterday morning. My phone randomly reboots, often after hitting the power button. The power button will not turn the screen on or off so I have to use screen on/off apps but they are buggy and this is frankly becoming a ridiculous hassle. Anyone know a fix or have a suggestion on my course of action?
Take it to Sprint or file a claim with asurion. Sounds like a hardware problem. Maybe do a battery pull and see if it helps. Are you on stock or a custom rom?

Custom rom. I've had this phone rooted since last christmas when I got it and never had the problem before up until now. I tried a few different roms to see if maybe it was just the rom causing reboots but that was to no avail

[Q] Does anyone have any experience with TEP and faulty phones?

I've had my Epic 4G Touch for well over a year and a month ago I noticed the power button was starting to feel "spongy". It still worked but it lacked that crisp feeling when you pressed it down and released it. This afternoon however, after flashing FI27, my power button no longer works whatsoever. I doubt it was the ROM and more due to the amount of times I've held this button down for recovery access, download mode, etc.
So the power button doesn't work, phone starts automatically when I remove the battery and put it back in. Otherwise the phone is in near-perfect condition and its not rooted.
Anyone know if TEP is going to cover this for free? I've looked online at some resources for TEP and everything is vague or above my level of reading between the lines.
Thanks in advance.
I just had this happen to me last week actually. Just plug the charger in and it'll wake up the phone. Set it back to stock unrooted and bring it into Sprint. They'll either try to fix it or give you a new phone. I had a replacement phone that night for $0.
You might have to pull the battery a few times, but you still should be able to get into download mode
Sounds like the internal button is either stuck or broken, if you take it to a repair center they might be able to fix it for you. However idk what cost would be if any, I dont keep any for of "insurance" on my phone, if i break it I swap to one of the others I have til I buy a new one. I tend to keep my phones mint and don't want to pay for a refurbished one when i have a bunch laying in a drawer.

I'm on FI27 w/ the newest AGAT kernel but just in case I used Chainfires' Triangle Away to get rid of the yellow triangle at boot. Outside of volume down + power button I don't know another way to get into download mode and since my power button is inop I'm kind of stuck.
Do you know of another way to get back into download mode? I have the self-extracting Odin file for EL29 just waiting to erase all evidence of root.
EDIT: Nevermind. Turns out the button is just stuck. I put the battery back in while holding volume down and it gave me download mode access. That solves one problem, lol.
If your capable, you can crack it open and clean the internal button. If its just sticky that should fix it. While you're in there you can look for actual damage which will tell you to go ahead and take it in for repair.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to do that, though I'm sure YouTube has a couple videos detailing how-to. I'll give it a looksee and if it doesn't scare me away I'll give it a shot. If its something I can do, might as well.
Does it still work now after booting back up? Mine didn't work but for some reason if i hit volume up+power i could get into download mode. But when it was actually booted, it wouldnt work at all, nor would it work inside CWM. Weird thing is when I took it into Sprint the touchscreen started having issues too. So that's probably another reason why I just got a replacement.

It works fine outside of the power button. I have recovery and download mode access, touchscreen is operable and nothing out of the norm seems to be going on. It's disturbing to say the least.
Wtf I got this issue after flashing Fi25 rom? Maybe its a bug? It had been working days before and spontaneously stopped working.

This power button problem just happened to mine friday i took it to a repair store they were rude and refused to fix it told me i needed to use my insurance... so i made a call and within 15 min and only 1 transfer (shockingly) to customer care they sent me out a replacement at no cost i received this afternoon and currently trying to put a custom rom on it.. i had the same issues as you and it was hardware related a smack against a table resolved it atrandom and that phone was also stock..
I have been with sprint nearly 10 years and with several calls to customer care you can get alot done.. if one rep dont help call back and deal with another.. I have been 4 months past due with nearly an $800 bill at one point and still no restrictions i have also have a few older phones and some windows phones replaced at no charge in the past but that took a little more work then this one...Ive was even able to get them to credit my account $300 instead of using my 2 upgrades on phones... just call be polite if that dont work try again with another rep..
btw the sprint store i took it to didnt note it on my account if they tell you you must goto a store kindly refuse saying you dont have time.. if the battle seems endless ask for a supervisor twice..

Read my comment, i need a replacement as well, by lock/power button isnt working either.
I went to my local Sprint store this afternoon and apparently I don't have TEP on my phone. Last month I had an upgrade but I'm happy with my E4GT so I let my wife use it so she could get the EVO LTE. We did this through Best Buy Mobile. My wife has a friend that works there so it's where *she* does all her cellphone business. For some reason my TEP was cancelled on my E4GT upon upgrade and unbeknownst to me for the last month and a half I've had no insurance. :/
I called Sprint customer support and explained what happened and in 3-business days TEP will be reinstated on my phone, no charge, and all will be well in the world. The guy at the Sprint store also said had I had TEP this issue would be fixed via direct-exchange at no-cost to me.
I also tried fixing it myself but I got scared when the couldn't separate the screen from the case and gave up before I borked it.

If your phone was not updated to 4.1.2 then this is called Sudden Death syndrome which happens in note 2 when it is on 4.1.1. I haven't experienced this but, i heard the only way is to replace the mother board. I think this is a hard brick and hence no one will be able to tell whether your phone was rooted or not.

No, it was not updated. I hope they will fix it properly and I really hope they don't charge me for repair, I don't even know how much it would cost and if it would not be better to just buy a new phone if they don't acknowlege my warranty. So I really hope you are right they won't be able to tell.

Hi,
i just posted this query in another forum and the answer is you've the warranty you'll not be made to pay for this.
If you're not under warranty, it costs about half of the device cost.

[Q] SDS Sudden Death Syndrome (CALLING SPRINT?)

Hey guys!
QUICK SPECS:
- SPH-L710RWBSPR (Marble White 16gb version)
- Under a year old
Okay so I'm almost certain my s3 has Sudden Death Syndrome as it won't turn on each time, and fails to stay on after occasionally turning on once. The power button has failed I can tell, as the power menu randomly pops up when its on, and then BOOM the screen goes black and it's off again. I have tried multiple batteries, download mode, recovery mode, usb recognition from the computer, heck even adb into recovery.. NO AVAIL. So, all in all, my beautiful phone - is now an
Now --- my question is! WHAT SHOULD I SAY TO SPRINT OVER THE PHONE? In order to get a free replacement phone? There's no Samsung Service Center around me and so I must go through Sprint. I just don't want to deal with any representatives that think the way to deal with customers is like a child. ESPECIALLY when the customer could do their job better than them. ANYWAY, /endrant. I read from a post it's safe to say, ""I charged my phone for 3 hours before bed.. unplugged it... and screen flashed white... and it keeps rebooting itself and it wont stop.."...Do NOT tell them you left it on the charger for 5+ hours!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats possible internal damage and voids warranty.""
Should I do that, or just tell the truth and say "My phone has the Sudden Death Syndrome and I would like a replacement."
Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.
Colton
Um idk where you read the 5+ hours can hurt your phone. Every newer electronic device has overload protection built into it.
I would just explain to them whats happening. They most likely will walk you through the usual trouble shooting steps. Or you can take it to a Authorized Sprint Service center.

Okay, thanks man. I'm just worried about the whole "if your're rooted your warranty is void" thing. Because I'm running a custom ROM on my phone, but if it is impossible to boot up, Sprint won't be able to tell right? So I'm all good right?
If they get it booted up, then yes they could. I've seen a Authorized Sprint Service center repair a broken power button. But I've also seen them just issue a refurb. It depends on the tech that looks at it. Idk if they would just issue you a refurb over the phone without one of their techs looking at it.

Yes they could look at it, but it's not just the power button that's broken. The issue with Sudden Death Syndrome is that it's an eMMC Firmware malfunction and so the chip is messed up, and so basically this is all Samsung's fault, not mine. I have read in this case, I would not get a refurbished phone, I would get a brand new replacement.
Also, I have tried to see if I can revert to stock again. But in my situation, is there any way to even do that? My computer doesn't recognize my phone when I try to connect it, and I can't get into download mode or recovery or anything.
Could I possibly try this method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43305728 even if my phone has the SDS issue?

The SDS forQualcomm S3's is that the power button gets sunken in its socket, or otherwise damaged and causes the phone to continuously power itself off.

LOL. Don't do the second one. Unless you have an upgrade/money to buy a new phone...
Compressed air has helped people. Also taking it apart and messing with the power button a bit and then putting it back together, as well as just jiggling the power button around
All you really need is for it to stay alive long enough for you to boot into DL mode and Odin back to stock
