That's the Sprint Connection Optimizer turning your wifi on all the time. Just disable it in settings (not sure exactly where in settings, but it's definitely there, I'd assume in "more" under wireless settings).

Thanks for the clarification, Rocker of Dragons. I've been running AOSP Roms for so long I've forgotten where all of the settings are in stock TW.
And just a quick question: I noticed in your sig that you used Mskip's Toolkit when rooting. Did you have the same issues with Wifi being borked when you rooted it using the toolkit? I've stopped recommending it because of the issues people have has with it. I currently recommend Skunk Ape's guide, since it's easy to follow and walks you through each step with pictures and everything.
You can remove it via Titanium Backup, if you think its as useless as I do

Ok thanks for your help.

If your on a TW rom I recommend freezing it and not removing. Removing it has caused issues because it is linked to other tw based apps within the system.
On my two cents I love it I pick up wifi hot spots everywhere and the phone just connects automatically once you have already set it up. I go to Target I'm connected, I go to grocery store I'm connected, I go to mall I'm connected, I go to bookstore I'm connected, I go to Home Depot I'm connected, I go to Bahamas Breeze I'm connected... Lol see the advantages to using it.

I believe there may be some noobs on XDA, like myself, who did not know how to set up wifi tethering after root. Here's a quick rundown.
1. ROOT your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756885)
2. Go to Playstore and download "Wifi tether for ROOT users" (****EXCEPTION BELOW)
3. IMPORTANT!!! go to the app's setting and set the "Change Device Profile" to "GENERIC ICS"
4. there is no step 4.
Save yourself some $$$ instead of paying Verizon a service that should have been free to start off with. :victory:
EDIT: **** buhohitr mentions that you can achieve wifi tethering WITHOUT ROOT through the playstore app "FoxFi"
ENJOY!!!!!

Well... I figured it'll get the most views in the development section so here it is. One thing I might change is getting this in the "Guide" category
Just a note: I've been using this app with really inconsistent results using generic ics profile and auto setup. I've only been able to detect the wifi twice. I read somewhere that turning wifi tether on, let it start up, turn it off, reboot phone, and start up tethering again works somehow. I just tried it and it worked right away but this is only once. I don't know if this will work consistently 100% of the time though
best wifi tethering is just down load Foxfi from the market, installed and bang work like a champ..very reliable.Foxfi work with root and without root.
Thanks, that was a lot easier than I'm used to. Wifi tether worked the first time, and I turned it off and on a few times and it worked everytime.

Because it doesn't work for crap. I set mine as a galaxy nexus for CDMA/LTE and it works flawlessly.

This is the correct way to do it. choose "galaxy nexus for CDMA/LTE"
also, do not forget to check "routing fix"
this will give you full infrastructure tethering instead of ad-hoc tethering.
what does this mean? It means that your phone will allow things like ipod's , game systems (psp, gameboy..) to connect as well. It will function exactly like a wifi router.
cheers
This could just go in the themes and apps forum technically since all you're doing is installing an app basically... But I guess it's a guide. Thanks for the info OP. For those of you on the new shared data plans, don't even worry about following this guide, the tethering is included in the package because Verizon wants you to use more data and pay overages.
The default tethering app however does support open NAT for Xbox and PSN though which is kinda nice :X (Only wireless tethering root app I got to work with PSN and Xbox for open NAT is barnacle WiFi tether and it was a bit of a pain the butt.)
Free Hotspot on Shared Plan
If you purchased the phone with Verizon After the deadline and lost your unlimited data however, gaining a shared plan, Wifi Hotspot is included in the share data plan at no additional cost. There is no reason to hide your wifi traffic. HOWEVER, I personally find the Wifi Tether app to be better than the default Hotspot app anyway.

You must have meant that this is the correct way for you. When I check "routing fix" or "galaxy nexus CDMA/LTE", my laptop connot see a wifi signal. However, following the OP's post worked like a charm for me. Obviously, it may take a bit of tinkering for people to determine the best setup for themselves.
Is there a way to lower the power of the Wifi from the phone to save power. The range you get when tethering is way further than necessary and it might be better for battery if you could lower the power usage.
Also, is using this rooted wifi tether safer than using foxfi in terms of verizon detecting the use.
How safe are these methods compared to using a power toggle widget to just enable the built-in tethering app? I've found if you try to enable it from the menu, it checks for subscription, but if you use a power toggle app, it "just works."
Edit: One more question....while performing the Wifi pop-up hack, I found an option along the lines of TETHER_ALWAYS_ON. Has anyone tried changing this to a 1?
I believe tethering is more frowned upon than anything else by verizon. I have not heard otherwise, or heard of trouble with big red because of it. However, the "best customer experience" is had when you pay for it. Haha.
Been using Foxfi the last couple of days with no problems. Solid app that works well.
That worked for me, thank u sir

***Be sure to install SuperSu from the play store before following these steps so that this app will have proper root access***
1) Go here:

2) READ THREAD INFORMATION
3) Download:

4) Disable Sprint Connections manager through settings menu
*System settings /more settings /mobile networks*
5) If any previous versions of WiFi tether are installed, UNINSTALL
6) Install new modded .apk
7) Use the following settings:
- Generic ICS/JB (wlan0) for Device Profile
- Netd-Ndc (master) for Setup Method
- Check box for "Send Netd Max Client Cmd"
- Make Sure "WiFi-driver reload 2" is checked
- Check Keep Alive Connection
- Check "Routing fix"
8) Reboot!
That should do it for you.
Encryption settings work as well.
Let me know if this works for you

I haven't been able to get native 4g tethering to work since our ics days.. Something changed in jb and the wimax_service.jar file used from the og epic no longer works on our device (at least back in the day when I tried it). This I the best I've been able to do.

You may have to restart after the initial setup for things to work. I had to do this the first time, but not when I re flashed and tried again.

I have encryption turned on right now. WPA2. Works perfectly. Also, the first time I simply froze Sprint Connection Manager. The 2nd time I just disabled it from within the app settings itself.
Works great for me when I follow the directions, thanks OP! Encryption is working for me also.
I was too busy to try this today but posted a link to your thread on Universe JB Rom thread. First user over there that tried it said it worked great. I froze Connection Optimizer with TB and now I'm glad I didn't uninstall it. Thanks again
Worked Great!!
I'm up and tethering again!!!!!
Thanks!!!!
I had this working for a bit, then had to reflash, and can't get it working again. Those of you that have it working, are you using superuser or supersu? One-click or the original tar leak?
ive tried three times to get this working i think the problem ive got is with the connection manager, can some one please explain how to disable it,i know this makes me sound stupid but an actual video would be cool too, any help would be appreciated, thank you8 i finallygot it working thank god jelly bean rocks and thanks for all the help, to disable connection manager i used tb 4,75 hopefully after i load apps it will work
I'm not on the leak anymore... But if I remember right...
Menu, settings, more (near the top under Wifi settings and such), connection manager, disable (uncheck box).
Again I only used fk23 for less than 24 hours so I don't remember the exact options.. Anyway, that would definitely be the reason why it's not working for you.

So I finally managed to get it working... I had to disable 4G or else my wifi devices would not see the SSID being broadcast by my phone. Once on 3G, my devices can now see the SSID broadcast and join the network. Interestingly enough, once the devices are successfully connected to the network, I can then enable 4G to use the additional bandwith.

That is a very odd scenario. Worked perfect for me..
Now that the devices can see your network and are connected to 4G can you turn the network off and on again and will they auto connect? Or do you need to revert to 3g every time? That would be a huge PITA

Yes, it seems I only have to connect while on 3G once, then I can freely start and stop the network on 4g.
LIFESAVER! I played with FK23 for about a day but couldn't deal with the lack of 4G hotspot. So I had gone back to FI27 with the hotspot mod 'til I could find something like this. Works like a charm! Actually, my up and down speeds have increased from the FI27 hack, oddly. Stable Jellybean with working 4g tethering? I'll take it!
FYI: I just selected the device model along with the rest of the settings provided in the OP and it worked fine.

Where is Sprint Connections Manager?
Hello, I've googled this and searched many forums without much success.
My question: Is there a way to keep my wifi from constantly turning itself on?
I have altered settings in connections optimizer, as well as gone through all my wifi settings and still it turns on.
For some reason the connections optimizer resets itself after I turn it off.

I had this problem, it's the Sprint Connections optimizer. Go I to mobile networks and turn it off.

He's said he did that already and it wasn't working.
If you flashed a kernel, I'd reflash it, or could have been a bad flash of the rom in general.
If you keep going to the optimizer you are enabling it again. Once you uncheck the box don't go back to it anymore.
Woops, my bad. I guess I should read the whole post.
Someone somewhere said you have to delete it as well. I found it in Titanium Backup an uninstalled it. That's if you're rooted of course.
Awesomeness, thank you! I actually just read a post with the same info, just uninstalled with titanium and so far so good!

I have the Sprint Galaxy S3 stock rooted and trying to get wifi tether to work on it. It was working just fine on my htc evo 4g running fresh evo. Within 10 seconds of connecting, it says "what the hell! Your phone takes back control over the wifi interface. Immediate tethering shutdown now". I tried installing SuperSU and that didn't help too much. I do still have the other super user app installed, but I think I disabled it when I started SuperSU. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

Couple Things to try:
1: Turn OFF Sprint's Connection Optimizier
2. Make Sure "Keep Wi-Fi On During sleep" is set to "Always"

My issue is:
Sprint S3 Stock Rooted. via Team Epic Method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743780
4.1.2 (MB1)
Wifi Tether via TrevE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735
With "WiFi-driver reload" Checked I get the following results:
I can connect both encrypted or open. But when waking the screen from sleep I get the TOAST WTH message and Tethering stops.
After stopping and ending a Tether session I can NOT re-engage WiFi mode unless Reboot.
With "WiFi-driver reload 2" Checked
Tethering Starts but not visible to clients. So no one can connect.
After stopping and ending a Tether session WiFi can be resumed without reboot.
Not sure what else I can provide to help but if there is more I can let me know.
Thanks!
You Sprint Connection Optimizer needs to be Off. In Jelly Beans stock/custom roms it will turn On even if you set it to Off, you must freeze it with Titanium Backup.
About the TrevE mod, use the */22 version(thats how I fix it).
And most important Wi-Fi can't be turned on while using Wi-Fi Tether.

Well the Sprint Connection Optimizer really is "don't use your unlimited data".
It just drain your battery looking for an available Wi-Fi.

I know there are custom roms to improve battery life and id like to get rid of the cruft but my experience with connections optimizer in the past is that despite my 110mb cable modem and ac wireless router it still wants to go to the cellular data and i havent tried it on my s6 yet. So i still get the popups for this connections optimizer and i close it. Mostly i want that gone. Im not sure if i want root though. Ive seen on the internet that samsung pay doesnt work on rooted devices. Is this true? Still not sure what real advantage 8 core gets anyone.
In the mean time could someone advise about the samsung pay not working with rooted devices?

That is correct, liz.beth. Telling you more than perhaps you want to know, rooting will trip Knox, Samsung's protection system. Once that is tripped, you will not be able to use Samsung Pay on that device, even if you disable root.
I do have a suggestion for you regarding Connections Optimizer. First try going to your Wifi settings, click advanced and disable Wifi from turning on automatically. After that go to settings, to "more", mobile network, the Connection Optimizer and uncheck the box.
Hmm... well i guess we wouldnt like to be tripping knox in that case
I dont actually see an option to prevent wifi from turning on automatically
but i do see a smart network switch option and set it to off
