Hello.
I'm a bit confused. What is the purpose have two different sections on this forum, if both of them get CM/AOSP and such roms?
Shouldn't roms based on Samsung roms be posted in the "Original" section and CM/AOSP/AOKP so on in the "non-original" (or vice versa)?
Right now having these two sections seems to be redundant...

Original is more for kernels and such. Though I agree with you that in practice it isn't always working as planned I can see the thought process behind it

Edit:....Kenny got it...and has the qualified answer...
Thank you Kenny......g
The sticky in Original Development explains it.
As anyone can compile from CM supplied source how can that be original? What Original work was done? Original Development is to present the hard work of developers and teams to make 1000's of lines of original code to produce something not previously available for that device. A cherry picked CM ROM is NOT original and is building off of another teams or developer's Original work, therefore NOT Original.
It has NOTHING to do with TW versus AOSP. The very first TW custom ROM for a new device would qualify for original with all the smali edits.

Avatar, Root Box and Xone and PACMAN should be moved to Android Development not Original. All are CM or AOKP based.

Nothing. Not until they add the device. This will only compile roms for CM supported devices

What are the two ROMs in the Dev section of this forum (the DARKSIDE CM7 Hybrid and another nameless one)? I'm fairly new to this, so I apologize if this comes off as naive.

They seem to be kanged builds not official builds

Someone downloaded the compiled CM7 build linked in the dev section, and modified it, just like the devs take the OEM roms, modify them, and flash them (think of the alpha as a stock Samsung rom, and think of one of the other CM7 roms as a rom from adt or team kang, just without making the original much better [not knocking team kang or adt in anyway]).
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G
I just upgraded my Sensation to ONE X.. and YES there is a difference
i unlocked the phone but i have not rooted yet.. and i got a little confused why there are 2 development sections.
What is the difference between oneX and the original oneX
I noticed that after flashing new ROMs you have to flash the boot.img?! is that every time? i`m a little confused since everything was more straight forward with the sensation
Thanks
Since we don't have s-off for our hox, you have to flash boot.img manually every time you change ROMs or if instructed to do so by the rom dev.
As for why there are two different sections, there is an explanatory anouncement post by forum mods describing the two sections.
EDIT: I cant seem to find the anouncement. What it boiled down to is, for a rom/kernel/mod to be included in the original android dev section, it must be original work or add something innovative to an already existing rom. Simple additions or tweak of an already existing one does not qualify a rom to be included in the original section.

Yeah,
Basically "Original" is built from the ground up by the member who posted it
The "Android Development" is a developed version of an existing ROM?
nice, now i understand. So basically if i choose a AOSP or AOKP (which right now from what i read have lot's of issues) i go with the original thread.
It's a shame we do not have S-Off. i don't want to be stuck on Sense but from the looks of it, i might not have a choice (buggy AOSP)

All the AOSP/AOKP/CM10 ROMs are usable as daily drivers, none of them are buggy...
This maybe a stupid question but back in the day the development threads were only one. There were no "original" development section, I'm wondering when did this happen and what's the difference between either thread? (Same thing with my previous phone the gnex) Thanks.
As far as I can tell, "original" section is for ROMs created entirely by the devs based on the official Android sources.
The "regular" dev section is for cooked ROMs based on existing ROMs like Samsung's releases.

Ahh that makes sense the original section is all AOSP and the other is based off Samsung GS3 official builds.
I have installed Googl Play Edition 4.3 on my S4.
As a result, I have lost all of those cool Samsung features that rely on built in sensors
Is tgere any way to get those sensors working with Google play edition?
I mean things like turning pages by hand in the air above the phone, and scrolling ul and down by tilting the phone.
Thanks.
Is tbere a way to go back to Samsung stock rom? I did not back it up.

No TW features on 4.3. I think there was a minimal amount things on 4.2.2, but nothing really like the actual TW experience. If you want to go back stock, you have two choices: either Odin back to 100% stock and re-root... which is the boring way. OR you can d/l a modified/stock ROM and flash that with whatever custom recovery you have. Check the development sections; there are quite a few stock choices, and which one to pick just depends on whether you want it themed, bone stock looking, etc.
Thanks so much.
Do you have any recomedarions on modified stock Rom?
I am mostly concerned about a good battery life and speed of the device and getting back TW features.
By tbe way, do all midified stock Roms have TW features in them?
What are yiur recomedarions based on what I am looking for?
Thanks a lot

All modified stock ROMs have the TW features.
I've personally been using BobcatROM from the i9505 development section, but from what I could tell, the only differences between the modified stock are themes and small differences here and there. Just check a few out, if some of the tweaks or changes interest you, try it out.

Could you please point me to the right section to get modified original roms?
Is it in T-Mobile S4 Android Development section or t the T-Mobile S4 Android Original Android Development section?
I am not sure whether the original implies modified original rom section?
Would you also please include a link to where I can find your bobcat rom?
Thank you so much!

I gotta let you do SOME of the legwork But seriously, the mod/stock ROMs will be in Android Development and you can find kernels in the Original Development section. Considering you flash a T-Mobile kernel directly after flashing a ROM, you can use ROMs from any S4 development section including the "original development" section; be it AT&T, Sprint, etc. The only restriction is make sure not to flash a ROM from the i9500 section. The 9500 (Exynos octa-core) and 9505 (Snapdragon like the m919 and others) is the "international version" and share a forum; just different subsections dedicated to each one individually. The i9505 section is safe, which is where Bobcat is located. It's pounded into the ground, but it's worth mentioning again; if you rely on WiFi calling, you will want a T-Mobile TouchWiz ROM. If you're like me though and care nothing about WiFi calling then there's no reason to stick with only the T-Mobile ROMs unless you just prefer them.

II am a little confused.
Don't roms come with Kernels?
Do I need to download a separate rom and kernel
I just want to get an aokp rom tgat will give me the original tw features. Where do I go for that?

ROMs do come with kernels, and that's why if you flash an S4 ROM from outside the T-Mobile section you need to flash a T-Mobile kernel. The T-Mobile ROMs obviously already have T-Mobile kernels. If you flash a ROM from the AT&T section, your device will be using an AT&T kernel and will not boot. But if you flash the AT&T ROM and flash a T-Mobile kernel directly afterwards, your device will then have the T-Mobile kernel and will run that AT&T ROM just like it was built for your device. The only way to retain your TouchWiz features is to use any ROM based on stock. If you want AOKP, CM, AOSP, etc you will lose all of the TW features. I think WatchON works on some (most?) non-TW ROMs now; but as far as things like Air Move, Smart Pause/Stay, the TouchWiz camera, and the other gimmicky features... they don't work outside of TouchWiz. Read up. Go to the dev sections and read, at the very least, the first post for the ROMs. That first post will almost always give you an idea of what features the ROM includes, screenshots of what it looks like, what's not working that is supposed to, and if it's TouchWiz based or CM/AOSP based.
And throw lordcheeto a thanks or two lets him know you appreciate his leg work and explanation.
Thanks so much for all this info!
Really appreciate it.
I have done a little searching and cannot find an answer. Why in some device forums are there a "[DEVICE NAME] Android development" and "[DEVICE NAME] Original Android Development" sub-forums? I don't get the different between the two. Can anyone shed some light?

"Original" in this sense are only ROMs that are compiled from source, so AOSP, AOKP, CM Versions. Additionally SOME Sense-Roms may be inducted here, if they include truly extraordinary development. This decision is to be made by moderators.

This is what the sticky in some of the HTC device forums say. Original, meaning, it can't be based on some one else's ROM. So , ports , themed ROMs, tweaked ROMs, modified stock ROMs, etc are some of the stuff that are NOT included in original android development. Some kernels which are based on some other kernel source which was developed and have no or less significant unique features are also NOT original android development.
Hope this clears some part of it for you.

So the ORIGINAL "tag" just means that all of the development work in the thread is COMPLETELY original correct?
So would this mean the official releases of ROMs like CM, Paranoid Android, etc, would be in the original thread? Or just the regular thread?
Also, why are some root methods in the original, and some in the regular thread?
Thanks!

Official ROMs will be in original android development , as it would mean it would have been built by a maintainer.. i.e. he may have contributed to the actual ROM source code.. also some unofficial builds of ROMs which are extraordinary may be included in it. I can't exactly explain why some root methods or some ROMs are in original development .. it is on the discretion of the moderators who manage the particular forums.. There's no particular superiority of a ROM being and a ROM not being in original. I just am informing you about what it is supposed to be.. there maybe exceptions depending upon the various moderators. Also , I must mention , you should not judge a ROM by its position in the forum. Judge them on how you like them and the amount of effort put in it by the various developers of the ROM.. Hope that clears your doubt.

Nah I don't judge ROMs by their position. All of the phones I've had only had one Android Development forum. Lol.
