[Diss] AOSP Vs. MIUI - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Whacha think ? Good ol' fashioned AOSP or MIUI Roms ? (especially V5), and why ?

AOSP.
a manta wrote this.

miui was my choice earlier on nexus s because during those days miui with a good kernel did match up to the speeds of aosp roms
BUT now there is no comparison, miui running phone feels like a 800mhz processor phone :silly:
even though the ui is amazing to have and obviously to show friends and keep playing with all day, the amount of bugs and lack of smoothness really makes it tough to use as a dd

now that MIUI just got on 4.2.2 id have to say MIUI..the look and feel is so different than AOSP that it makes all those other roms seem just the same. MIUI is so customizable and different. pair that with a franco kernal and your good to go! lol

MIUI was a breath of fresh air during the GB days, but these days the interest just isn't there for me. I'd probably give v5 a spin if it ever drops for the toro+, however I'm more than content with the current state of Android.

well the only thing lacking from MIUI IMO is the app drawer

I'm diggin miui v5 right now. Pretty smooth and as the previous post said, "a breath of fresh air". I'm an aosp guy but something different for a change is nice.

I love AOSP.
But recently I tried MIUI v5 and it's quite interesting. MIUI have another interesting feature. The looks is pretty much different compared to AOSP.
It's also smooth.
My opinion? Still AOSP is best but MIUI worth try. You might love the fresh UI and won't get back to AOSP.

This was never a real big issue - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=JakedUp.AppDrawer - as there were means to solve this. Besides, MIUI made folders cool and practical before Android introduced a proper folder structure.
MIUI had a lot going for it, and the lack of a native app drawer was never a real issue.

:cyclops: didnt know about that app! :good:

Used v4 for a while on our device.
V5 is cool, but the media scanner bug sucks. Yes there's a fix, but with a bug this glaring, in wonder what else is wrong with the ROM.
Used it for a day and I love the interface, but went back to CM. I'll pry try the weekly releases until they get it right, and then I may stay on v5.

Oh yea. The toro ports are good. I'm not sure about the other variants.

AOSP. Miui is way too laggy compared to AOSP.

Once the the bugs are thrown out miui is way too much fun. 4.1.2 is much smoother than 4.2.2 right now. All of the devs just throw the ROM out there. It gets frustrating how much I want to run it and all the things that don't work.

Before Jelly Bean, I would have preferred MIUI. I found AOSP to be faster/smoother/better battery, but MIUI was very good looking. I honestly haven't tried MIUI again since Jelly Bean because I'm just so pleased with AOSP.

MIUI has been my choice since very first. Due to the crispness in the look as well as the UI makes you feel so organized especially V5, checkout the compass app, clock, music so crystal and professional design of the UI. I many times wonder, its "Google" behind the AOSP roms in my opinion the stock look is much much sluggish, It is very true that, later we can customize whatever we want to our choice. But my opinion is that a small group of chinese developers have done a very good job that they are brought into this kind of comparison.

I used MIUI on my old Droid X, but there are so many other cool roms for my current phone that I've mostly forgotten about MIUI.

My current phone is a Galaxy Nexus. I used Codename Android back when it still existed. Now I am running Paranoid Android 3.94 and I'm really liking it. I haven't tried stock 4.3 yet so I can't compare the two, but the PA rom feels quite smooth. I also love using PIE and Halo to a lesser extent.

I personally don't see why people have made a ROM to look similar to an iPhone, so it's CM7 for me with it's gingerbreaddy goodness
CM series is more stable IMO
I would prefer MIUI. Looks simply, fast, good design, stable(but not more as CM), but in some cases it isnt translated to eng
..just my opinion
CM is better, for me, because of the battery and there are many bugs every week on Miui.
Miui is good (it's change of sense and aosp ROMs) but not stable enough yet. That's my opinion.
I moved from sense roms to CM7 and find it great. Haven't tried MIUI yet though do hear good things about it... may have to try it soon.
def cm7. miui looks too much like an iphone clone. i had a iphone 33g for 2 years and a iphone 4 for afew months. bored setup, apple def needs to stepup its game. cant believe they released ipad 2 with the same os as ipad1. boooo
Without CM there is no MIUI, If you like iPhone kind of UI and additional functionalities built-in then MIUI is best option. But as other's said, its not stable yet.
Personal opinion:
I hate MIUI. It is too iPhone-ish!
Flashed it once and reflashed it with something else after about 1 hr. I just hate it!
Go for CM!
Neutral opinion:
Just try them both and see which one you like man!
I like the miui look and feel BUT... I prefer the ability to use scrollable widgets e.g friend stream or friends in launcher pro. You dont tend to miss something till its gone so this was the deal breaker for me.
If the vertical scroll is ever available, i will use miui again
regards
more opinions please
Although I have flashed MIUI several times, I'll choose CM any other day due to its stability and good UI
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
There is no massive difference in the stability of either ROM as both are CM7 (and a CM7 kernel) underneath. Also in the way you can change the launcher in any other ROM, you are not stuck with the 'IPhone-ish' look and feel either. I personally do not use the MIUI launcher on MIUI (I use SPD Shell 3D - mad lookin').
IMO, I feel that the look and feel of the menus in MIUI are nicer as I like the clean look. It also integrates well with the stock MIUI apps like the dialer, messaging app and camera etc (vs. the AOSP stock apps in CM7).
I love the unified feel of MIUI and find CM a little disjointed, but as others have already said, try both and see.
Cm7 is clean and fast. Miui is nicer looking but takes up doughty more battery.

Is MIUI any good on the Galaxy Nexus?

I loved MIUI on the HTC Desire, it was fast, stable and just worked.
However i have never heard many good things about it on the Galaxy Nexus, a lot of people say its slow and laggy. from watching most YouTube videos it does appear to be. What are people experiences with it?
The reason i ask is the ViciousMIUI V4.1 Jelly Bean Edition is supposed to be pretty fast and stable. Atleast in this video, however some comments say ". But compared to the stock Jelly Bean ROM (Vicious, Bugless, etc.) it is a lot slower and less fluid than JB. I was took forever to load and seemed kind of buggy to me."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqraqIUenOU
Just wondering if people think its worth going from stock jellybean to MIUI, i do like that everything on my phone just works at the moment, however i do miss MIUI.
Nandroid and try it then let us know.
I actually have tried MIUI on the Gnex. ICS as well as Jellybean. It is working ok, but as you say it's pretty laggy.
So if u love miui I would just try if I were you and then draw you're own conclusions. I have never tried it for a long time, so it's perfectly possible that when the rom settles it will solve the lagging issues.

I have only heard negative things from the ones who has tried MIUI. Buggy and laggy sums it up pretty much.
Heard good things used it for awhile and no problems with it. Minimal lag to me and I didn't have any bugs that bothered me.

mainly because I don't like the UI, but it was pretty smooth and stable if that's what you're looking for.
Not recomended on the GNex...!!!
I loved MIUI on my Galaxy S i9000, in fact it was my favorite ROM on the SGS. but would not recommend it on the GNex...too laggy and you have more feature rich ROMs out there.
mmm
mmm
heard it's pretty and neat,
but kinda laggy atm in JB
OP: Why don't you just try it yourself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31621751
I did end up giving it ago myself, the build on miui.com was pretty laggy and was not totally in English.
The ViciousMIUI V4.1 build was a lot more responsive and had been totally translated from what i could see, it did'nt appear to be as fast as the stock jelly bean is on the nexus, however it did look really nice!
The double unlock screen is annoying though, its a shame you cant just disable the lock screen on MIUI if you have a swipe to unlock pattern set.
At this moment in time i'm just going to stick with the stock Jellybean rom, MIUI just doesn't perform like it did back in the 2.3 days sadly. Although it looks even more awesome and I do miss it after using it now!

Yep I agree... I was a serious MIUI fan back in my Nexus S days but MIUI on Galaxy Nexus makes me feel really bad about it. I downloaded it every week, flashed, then went back to CM. Until the last few versions (especially 2.9.14) that I feel it's getting good enough to be my daily driver :fingers-crossed:
Its nice. The newer releases are better and better. The only complaint I have is when an app is requesting root permission I have to click the dialog box like 6 times. No joke. That alone was a deal breaker for me

Nexus Roms

Hiya everyone,
So I just became a Galaxy Nexus owner as of yesterday, and wondering what support is out there for this phone dev side as well whats everyones fav rom? I'm quite happy with the stock AOSP 4.2.1, however I do miss some customization of roms like from CM and AOKP when I was a S2/One X owner.
Wondering if its really worth that much of a change though however to go custom? I used to build on the S2 side of things so if there seems to be a strong community on the Nexus side maybe I'll reboot the old linux box.

You couldn't just look in the development section? And there is no favorite rom for everyone. I use slim but everyone has their own preference. No offense but I'd have expected a Dev to know better.
Try Xylon, custom toggle, custom navbar, custom status bar, custom kernel, custom .... Blablabla
A powerful mix of many CM, AOKP improvements and mainly lag and bug free

Hmmm, why don't you try building as you used to do on your S II and customize your ROM the way you wish? Actually this is what I settled on after trying so many ROMs on my S II and I am following the same way with my GNex. I feel great and satisfied when I am running my own ROM and I may even bear some bugs in it just because it is mine

For me 4.2 is a total dissapointment,i'm still running 4.1.2 on CNA 3.8.0,the best i found out there. Tried all the 4.2 roms and all of them had that lockscreen delay that was driving me nuts so I decided remaining on 4.1.2 for a while. Also tried all the 4.1 roms but the best that fits my wishes is CNA with a stock look and tons of customization, along with faux' latest kernel, 23m-sr
Paranoidandroid hands down, no rom on this site is comparable when it comes to speed, smoothness, customizations and battery life all rolled into one, others may have one of those better but none have the combination and NONE have the amount of options.
What I am using currently can be found in my signature below.
If you're looking for a stock ROM that's merely been rooted and deodexed, bigxie's ROMs are solid and popular.
If you want a lean, clean, fast ROM with only the most useful modifications, it would be hard to beat Rascarlo's ROMs.
If you want ROMs with mods galore, some of the most popular ones are CyanogenMod, CodenameAndroid, and ParanoidAndroid. But there are plenty of others with dedicated followers.
I'm using Mmuzzy's AOSP 4.2.1 with kmameguy's MODs. I have the nice CM circle percent battery and other MODs, with the stability of 4.2.1 (as stable as it gets ATM) and probably 15-20 hours on battery. I don't think there are a lot of customizations on any 4.2 ROMs yet, as they're dealing mostly with stability issues. I've tried Factory, Vanir's beta, Xylon, and others... none have been super impressive to leave Mmuzzy's...

Perofrmance difference between AOSP roms vs Touchwiz roms ?

I just picked up my brand new Note 2 in white from ATT this week, running on Straight Talk. Rooted it before I took the plastic stickers off it, easiest and fastest root ever for me, and I am not a smart techie guy.
Anyways, I wanted to first try out a stock Touchwiz ROM, and found a very popular ROM here, installed it, and then installed Nova launcher with Jellybean theme, and I also installed a few ismc mods to give the phoen a pretty close to stock AOSP Nexus look, while still keeping the good Touchwiz S-Pen apps and widgets.
My last few phones have been One X running CM10, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus-S, Nexus-One. As you see, I am a fan of the pure vanilla look and feel. But it seems to me, that Jellybean has really made non Nexus phones really good, and with a launcher like Nova, and themed like Jellybean, it is darn close to the real nexus deal to me.
My question.
What are the performance numbers or at least your personal feel and opinion if you have used both on the Note 2 ? How does a good AOSP ROM, like CM10.1 run on the Note 2, compared to a stock Touchwiz ROM like cleanROM or JediX. Does the feel feel faster & smoother on AOSP over Touchwiz ? Battery life I am sure better on Tocuhwiz ?
Thanks
Running on JellyBeer, which uses CM10.1 as the base, it feels so much faster than stock. In fact, the battery life is also much much better.
I have to say I am pretty happy with cleanROM and my themes + Nova. Looks just like a Nexus now.
I do love AOSP, and sure it would be faster than Touchwiz ROM's, but I think I will hold off on those till next month, just reading there are few little bugs or minor issues still in these AOSP ROM's. I think another few weeks or month they be ironed out, and good to go.
I would switch to AOSP if its like crazy faster performance over Touchwiz ? If benchmark shows like night and day faster. Is it ?

I wouldn't call out timelines, but I guarantee you that in a matter of a little over a week, the developers made giant strides to how it is now, which is near perfect. Sure, there's minor bugs, but nothing people can't live with. They're very minor, and most people who complain about certain supposed quirks either complain just to complain (I see them as people who can never be pleased), or haven't explored their settings long enough to realize what they're complaining about, whether something seems missing to them or isn't adjusted to the way they want, is right in front of them.
You are tempting me to try out AOSP Sorry I didn't mean to put a timeline out there, I am sure the good ones are stable and good enough as daily's.
I really am tempted by all these AOSP ROM's. But then with AOSP I lose the S-Pen features. Are the AOSP that much faster and smoother than Touchwiz ROM's, or not really ? Right now with Nova launcher mods + themes my phone looks almost like a Nexus already, is it worth it going to full AOSP ?

As I recall, some of the ROMs have Nova Launcher included. I'm not sure how a Nexus looks, but I would say it's not too different.
And yes, as I said before, AOSP (and even AOKP) is faster than stock. It's because it gets rid of the bloatware. As for S-Pen features, it depends on you and what you like. Apparently airview and the like won't be available unless someone ports it over, but S Notes can be replicated with another app.
Why not do a nandroid backup and flash a CM10.1 ROM and take it for a spin. You can always go back to your backup. I prefer running CM10.1. simple powerful interface and great performance. Touchwiz is to bulky and if you want spen apps pypirus is a great option

My biggest gripe on CM right now is audio. Incall audio and speaker volume are poor opposed to TW. I talk on the phone quite a bit and I can tell the difference noticeably. It will get ironed out, and I will be on CM for good.

I'm running the asylum aosp ROM and I'm having the best performance of any ROM I've tried to date, but on both in benchmark and subjective feel. I do find myself missing touch work tremendously though with some of its features. But I so love that my group messages workwwithout having to install a crappy third party messaging app.
As far as battery life, for me, the difference is negligible.

I've had issues with some stables as well as some nightly's myself, so I don't think it makes too much of a difference IMO on what it's technically called. I'm currently on the 20130101 build of CM10.1 and have been running it for over a month with only one random reboot and no issues at all. If you don't use bluetooth then I'd recommend it.
Do you mean F-A-S-T really? CM7.2 runs fastest amongst all plain, untouched ROMs on my device.
I know CM10.1 is buttery smooth, but it's still Android 4.x. It still bogs a yearold phone down somewhat (you may not feel that, anyway, I don't feel bogged down THAT much but it counts). And that's where a very clean 2.3 build like CM7 come in handy. Plus app compatibility is better, if you're not into Android 4.x specific apps.

You could try Pac-man Rom. I've only had one reboot. And it's pretty snappy opening apps.

Thanks. I"ll give both those a shot. It needs to be fast and stable because im giving my wife my old phone, and she is not nearly as technically minded as I am - i just upgraded to a Galaxy S III with LTE - and I'm hooked. Only drawback is the GS3 needs a physical keyboard variant.
If its for someone not technical you should use either CM7 or The Peoples Rom. They seem to have the best battery life and are the most stable.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
CM7 and the GB TouchWiz roms seem to be the most speed and battery-efficient roms for our devices, but honestly the newer JB roms like PACMan/Provision/CM10/etc. have been pretty damn stable and impressive, depending on how you use it.
