You can overclock CPU from boot menu, just like in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK-NVgWWJ3E make sure you know what value set up before doing that!
There are tons of people saying SetVsel makes Defy+/MB526 reboot or freeze.
You need to have 2nd init and CWM on your phone.
go to bootmenu > system. Enable Overclock and Enable 'enable all modules' and SAVE.
SetVsel should work.and you can always overclock via CWM

However, the vsel value of the last clock is tricky. Some devices like mine can handle 1200 mhz @ 56 pretty well while others fail to. I even play fifa 12 and gta lll.

I've set the values as [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] running well but don't know why, when I was checking for 1350MHz my cell rebooted and all apps lost their data the XDA app and subway was uninstalled now while m trying to install them back its(play store) throwing an error "unknown error occured while installing the application (-24)"....
I also came to know that how to resolve this error by removing the old data of the app....even though I've removed app data, giving me the same error...
DO I NEED TO FACTORY RESET FOR IT?????
Not to discourage you, but overclocking is never fool proof or completely reliable
Sent from my MB526 using Tapatalk 2
According to me it's foolproof as earlier when I try to overclock it again comes back to 1GHz but now its retaining that clock speed @1.25GHz....yes it costs some battery but nevertheless I got a good reborn Defy plus
Sent from my MB526 using xda app-developers app
Also regarding my last reply where I mentioned loss of application data....I've resolved it actually I've just removed data of those two apps from the sdcard folder not from system data....so after removing it..successfully installed those apps n see m posting from xda app

I used to overclock my defy through bootmenu by [email protected], and it runs just fine.
But know I just overclock it to [email protected] since 1350MHz heats up the phone too easily.
Crossing the value of 65 for vsel will warm ur phone....m on [email protected] it's okay just a little heat up...but runs great

Or you could use setvsel which is specifically an "Overclocking Undervolting Tool for Motorola Defy." No need to use an app made for a different device. Also, with SetVsel you have the option to "apply at boot", which I'm guessing the Milestone app does not have since you're stating that after reboot the overclock configuration is lost.
And then again, you can just do all this through the bootmenu. I use SetVsel together with the option "Limit to VSel 1 while screen is off" since, as far as I know, the Interactive governor does not limit the CPU speed while screen is off/during sleep (unlike Smartass), and every time I change the governor the phone reboots. This works for me and I'm overclocked at 1.1 ghz and still get about 2 days of battery life.

SetCPU issues
I have been having the same issues myself. Mine was set low to 100min/max: screen off just as a test today and it did that to me a on a few seperate occasions. Not sure why, just ended up battery pulling after 10-15 seconds of no response from the phone.
The cpu is set too low on screen off, go for 245 or so
setcpu does not play nice with r phones. i had problems witth it on every kernal i played with. right now im using the mix up kernal. i used setcpu to 1.2ghz max and 100mhz min. conservative governore. i have yet to find a set up to use while the screen is locked with no issues. what i do know is galaxy s phones only like the conservative setting. maybe a 400mhz max 100mhz min with conservastive governore would work?
Make sure setcpu is set to conservative. I set my lowest to 200mhz and max at 1200. No issues here other than sometimes the notification pull down bar is laggy but it does that stock anyway.

The rom don't control the cpu speeds. The kernal does. You cab run any rom kernal combo you would like. In order to hit the 1.4ghz you want you need to run a kernal that is capable of doing so

Is SetCPU really necessary anymore? If you run a kernel that's not locked into performance mode it will scale on it's own even without SetCPU. I haven't installed it on my Epic yet and when monitoring the phone with SystemPanel I see my CPU go down to 200mhz when idle and scale up when processes are running.

I dont think I quite understand your situation, are you rooted or not, according to this post you say you are stock besides "peraroot (I think you meant permroot)and the kernel" , so meaning you are rooted (s-off)??. Anyways if you are rooted why are you using gscript to OC with? And if your on a custom kernel why not use setcpu or something similar.
If your not rooted (s-on) then I think I remember when using the gsript files that 1.4 and over was unstable, if you want something a little higher than 1ghz use something like word pad to change the value in the script you are pushing for the oc to go to 1.1ghz or 1.2ghz etc..

Yes I'm permarooted. S-off. I'm useing gscript because that's what was done in the video. I have setcpu and use it but with out a overclock program I can only raise it to 806MGz and with oc. I can raise it to 1017MGz. If that's as high as I can go then I guess I just have to deal with that.

As someone said earlier, I think you are using the old, unstable method. I highly recommend u updating to a ROM with OC embedded into the kernel.
It is also true that "not all processors are created equally" but this is the only case I have read with it freezing at 1.4.

I have the same problem ,i am running virtouos ROM with evil 12/10 and if i over-clock anything over 1094mhz my phone freezes the the only way that i can manage more than that is if i set it to performance scaling with no profile and there is no point on doing that because it eats the battery .its only good for benchmarking ,i think your problem is same is me, you have been unlucky with your CPU .i am just hoping its going to be different when gingerbread come out.

Have you given CM6.1 a go just to compare if you can clock higher using a different ROM?
If you are indeed using the gscript method then this has been explained many times! there's a whole giant humungo thread about that hack when it initially came out.
the reason your phone's freezing is because you're asking it to clock faster, but you arent giving it more juice to offset the additional work it's conducting..hence the freeze. that old hack (while it was awesome at the time) is very outdated and has been surpassed by actual performance kernels.
It's all in the thread. you wouldnt put low octane in a sports car would you? same principle lol

Just bought it but I don't really get it. Both the max and the min. Are at 1.5 set on on demand but at the top it says 384 mhz (I'm guessing that's the current clock speed since I'm not doing anything) don't know which one to trust. should I set the min. at 384 ?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Set the min at 384 and the max where ever you want. Stock is 1.5. You can underclock or overclock (if your kernel supports it). If you overclock dont check set on boot til you have played around with your phone and are sure that your phone can handle it. You can choose what ever governor works best for you. Conservative is best for battery, performance is the worst. Most people go with on demand, but your results may vary.
I've found that the smartassv2 governor gets me the best results.
But its very unstable and can cause crashes.

Hey guys, i got cyanogen mod 7.2 installed on my phone, and whenever i tried to change the max cpu speed from the settings, it would now work after boot. Most of the market programs i use freeze as soon as i try to apply my changes. I got "No-frills Cpu control" to work once, so i made it 844 max clock speed. So i was wondering, which app do you use to overclock your gio that doesnt freeze?

Which is the best governor for gaming performance?
Performance or smartass v2
Sent from my GT-S5660 using xda premium
For performance the best governor is "performance". It causes that processor overclocking is always the highest. It means that if you have overclcked processor at 921MHz, with this governor phone will always work at 921MHz. But don't use it, it drains battery as hell
The best governor for daily use is SmartassV2, because it's balance between performance and battery
And sorry for my English :|

Yup,any overclock will drain your battery quicker, this is very logical as you consume more power, right?I use No Frills CPU control, and i have my galaxy Gio set to 921 Mhz....! It realy works like asmall little pocket rocket now...I was already very satisfied with the price/performance ratio of this cheap little phone, but now with this stable OC it really hits it out of the park!!!No complaints from me about this phone..I'm gonna try and achieve an even higher oc,but it's really not a must, just want to know how far i can push it.No Frills has a benchmarker impemented ,very handy.

That's true. But smartass is just like balance between perfomance and battery drain, which makes it the best governor
