[Q] T-Mobile SGH-T989 with ICS - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

First post on this forum. Great site.
My T-Mobile Galaxy S2 (SGH-T989) got updated to ICS via Kies.
I tried rooting again: Used ODIN to flash recovery-cmw-hercules.tar; flashed superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip.
The phone is stuck in a boot loop...keeps rebooting and won't get past the Samsung logo. I tried flashing jeboo kernels also, but the ones I found are all written for the i9100 phone (not SGH-T989).
Can't get my phone to start and there are no other ROMs (.zip files) on the phone.
Any HELP greatly appreciated.

Download a ROM on PC push to SD card , go into recovery wipe data/dalvik/cache flash ROM /gapps then reboot ,
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989

Henslo,
Thnaks. How do I push a ROM to my SD card if I can't get my phone to start? Can I do that while in recovery?

Try downloading on your computer and transferring onto your SD card.

You can put your phone in mass storage mode while in recovery, under mounts and storage. Connect to PC then place the ROM and gapps you downloaded on the SD card, unmount ,reboot recovery wipe then flash

Many thanks again. I figured out how to mount and downloaded Juggernaut ROM. Question: what are the gapps? Can I just flash the Juggernaut zip file?

The gapps are the Google apps, you need for the play store and many others. Flash them after you flash the ROM .

Thank you
My phone is working again! Many many thanks for all your help.
I have succesfully flashed a ROM which got it working. Question whould I also load gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip to get my ICS apps back? I'm not familair with this file, but it claims to restore all ICS related Gapps.
Much appreciated.

The Gapps package just loads Google applications that are not written into the framework of the ROM. If you don't load the package, there is no way for you to get the play store. The apps you had would have to have been backed up with a third party app (Titanium backup or App2SD) Once you flash the Gapps package, go into the Play Store and download the apps you had with your other ICS ROM. My advice to you is get Titanium Backup. Its cross platform. So when you decide to upgrade to JB, you can load all your old apps from your ICS build onto the new ROM. Its well worth the 3.44 for the pro version. But the free version works just as well. Hope this helps.

[Q] Messed up evo PLEASE HELP

My evo cannot install apk's and whenever i boot up a rom i downloaded from my computer it randomly reboots. The rom's I tried were Alter rom and elite series resurected. The only roms i got to work were evo classic and dark light. Please help me.
Some backstory. It all started when i flashed Evo classic last night and I did not have the Google Play Store. I decided to get an APK. What I did was got an APK from a thread on XDA I tried to install it through the Downloads app but it froze up my phone and just rebooted. I tried this several other times with no luck.
Thanks in advance.
Some roms you have to flash google proprietary files.

You did not say that you made a nandroid back up of your phone, have you? If not, you just experienced why you should start.
What recovery are you using? Have you tried wiping dalvik and cache to see if that helps?
More details on what you did to get yourself in this situation would be helpful.

I did that. For dark light i used ICS Gapps. And when I rebooted there was no play store. Also for Classic sense I went through setup, and there was no playstore.
I am thinking this could be a Sd card issue.
You can't flash ICS on anything below 4.0. It won't work
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I tried sense 1.0 and I had a Android backup of dark light I tried to go back to that but no market so I used am on ra to fix permissions then I installed gaaps and there was a market. But when I install an app or apk my phone reboots.
If it were me, I'd:
1) Backup the files on SD
2) In Recovery: Reformat/re-partition SD
3) Copy a ROM .zip to SD
4) In Recovery: Flash ROM
5) In Recovery: Save recovery.log to SD
6) Post recovery.log here
If you do this with AlterROM, you'll need to use the Save Log option at the end of the installer.

Thanks but I think I found out the problem what I did was install a rom ran gaaps went into recovery fixed permissions took out my SD card booted up the phone downloaded something from the market put my SD back in and everything worked. Also I tried AlterRom but when I got done with aroma and booted it up there was no launcher. So what I am thinking is that its an SD card issue. And other help would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading my tome of knoledge . Any help is appreciated.

[Solved] Flashed cyanogenmod, stuck on boot screen

Hey guys, I'm really new to rooting, flashing roms, and Android in general (I've used iOS since 2007 until a month ago... please have mercy on my soul). I have an AT&T GN2 that I would like to remove the bloatware from, hence why I began investigating rooting, but it's snowballed into my desire to try out some of the amazing ROMs that the developers here have produced. Since the Note 2 uses the Exynos 4, I rooted using the ExynosAbuse exploit and downloaded Titanium Backup to freeze the AT&T apps. So far, so good.
However, I am wanting to get into how to flash custom ROMs, like CyanogenMod, so I downloaded the CWM RomManager and flashed the CWM Recovery. I downloaded the CyanogenMod 10.1 release for the i317 model (here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024495) and the latest gApps package (for 4.2.1), and flashed both from CWM RomManager. When it rebooted, it showed the CyanogenMod boot screen, but it appears to be stuck there. I'm not sure what to do at this point, and am hoping I didn't brick my phone. Is there anything I can do at this point?
Use the three button combo to get into recovery, should be volume up, home, and power, and then wipe data or install a stock rooted ROM. That should help get you to a bootable stage.

When I booted into recovery, I got the CWM recovery (which is a good thing, I suppose). I wiped the cache, and then installed the CM 10.1 zip and gApps zip. However, I think I still need to wipe data/factory reset, right?
So, at this point, I've:
1. Rooted the device using Chainfire's ExynosAbuse apk (super easy).
2. Installed RootChecker (success) and TI backup (froze bloatware apps).
3. Downloaded CWM RomManager.
4. Flashed CWM Recovery.
5. Downloaded CM 10.1 port for i317 (the AT&T GN2 model) and the 4.2.1 gApps zips.
6. Chose to install ROM from SD card in RomManager, added both CM 10.1 and gApps, and only selected install (did not wipe cache or user data at this point).
7. Received blue CyanogenMod boot screen... excited... but it remains on the boot screen. Sad face.
8. Removed battery to power the device off, placed battery back in, and then booted into recovery mode (CWM recovery).
9. Installed the CM 10.1 zip and gApps zip from SD, then wiped cache.
10. ???
Wipe data factory reset. Wipe cache/dalvik. Flash cm, flash gapps. Reboot
And dont use rom manager. Do it in recovery

Okay, booted into CMW recovery and performed all in that order. It booted! Hurrah. Only problem: the AOSP keyboard crashes constantly, making text input not possible. Sigh...

Okay, I booted into recovery mode and fixed permissions... the keyboard still crashes, which means I can't type anything. Do I have to do anything with the kernel? I didn't wipe the dalvik cache, should I have done that?
EDIT: wiped dalvik cache, didn't do anything... apparently, this was a fine release so I'm not sure what could be causing the keyboard issues.

So what ROM are you using? I just picked cyanogenmod because I've heard of it before, but I would like something that works. Is there a way to add another ROM onto the phone's storage, as I don't have an SD card... And since I can't type anything, it's not like I can download it from the phone's browser?

Plug it into your computer and see if you can mount your internal sd. If you can download a new rom to your computer and transfer it to sd. Did you make a backup before flashing?
Im just running stock rooted for now.

Well, I'm downloading CleanROM right now. I also downloaded another cm 10.1 file just in case, perhaps it's because I downloaded it on the mobile Chrome browser that I'm having problems? I also downloaded a kernel from the thread to help with performance. However, if I can't get these on the phone, it doesn't matter. Since I'm on a Mac, I have to use Android File Transfer, and it isn't registering my phone, unfortunately. I may have to go out and buy a cheap SD card and throw the files on there. It may not hurt to have one around, anyways.
Text yourself the download link to CleanRom.
And chrome shouldnt have made a difference. I take it you didnt make a nandroid backup before you flashed cm?

No... I thought that a backup of the original ROM was made when flashing CWM recovery, but I am a noob and that did not happen. Unfortunately, the browser doesn't even work! So I cannot text myself the link for the download. I should be able to flash a zip file from a micro sdhc, right?
Flash the right GAPPS, the crashing keyboard is a symptom of incorrect GAPPS. The December one is for 4.2.1 only, which is what CM10.1 is based on. Make sure you flash the right GAPPS with the right CM version.

Oh... crap. Is there any way I can get the correct gApps on my phone? Ugh... I'm going to have access to a Windows machine today, so I can download the correct GAPPS and put them on my flash drive. I can still put it in USB debugging mode, but will the PC recognize it? Android File Transfer software for Mac does not recognize the phone any more, so I'm a bit limited in what I can do. Unless, like I said before, I can just pop in an SD card with the correct file.
Just grab goo manager from the market and dl the correct gapps to your phone. Either that or use your phones browser. No need for a pc. Boot in recovery, wipe cache and dalvik and flash correct gapps. Should be gtg.
Edit: just saw your browser isn't working. Goo manager's your best bet. Could always try another browser from the market as well. Good luck.

cwm 6.0.1.0 Status 7 cyanogen mod 10.1

Ok. So i have the canadian samsung galaxy s3 (wind), i recently rooted it using this method: How to Root the Sprint / AT&T / T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III - Latest (i can not post links atm, it's by qbking77)
The root worked fine, the problem i'm having is when installing cm10.1, the most recent snapshot. I installed the version of cwm specified in the video, and tried it with that. It gave me a status 7 error. I updated cwm to version 6.0.1.0, and tried again, still same error. I have no idea what i am doing wrong as i've followed the instructions perfectly. I wiped the data, and then installed the zip from the sd card.
NOTE: I did put the files on the external sd card rather than the internal one, could this cause the problem? Otherwise, any help is greatly appreciated! I would love to be able to run 4.2 on my phone! THANKS!
Status 7 is md5 mismatch. Re-Download the rom and try again. Make sure to download from a PC then move to either sd card (internal preferred). Check md5 before flashing.
You "can" download straight to your phone, but there are better chances of encountering problems if you do.

Just transfer the files to a micro sd card. If you don't have one or can't for some reason, you could always flash back to the stock ROM with kies or odin, and then transfer the files back to your phone.
thanks a lot, up and running !
though i have a camera problem, i'm assuming this is ROM related so i'll post it in the PA Nightlies.

[Q] SGH-i747m bootloop & TWRP flashing issues

So iv rooted, and using goo manager (can't use Odin because I don't have PC and this was easier) I flashed the latest version of twrp. I first did a nandroid backup and then tried to flash PAC ROM 4.4.2 nightly and cm11 neither worked (I have tried others since then) each time it says "no md5 file found". Its not the end of the world if I have to use the stock ROM for a while till I sort this out.. But when I flashed my nandroid backup I got stuck in a bootloop now I don't know what to do. I can get to twrp still and download mode if nessessary
Please help im a bit of a noob but I'm not stupid and have flashed ROMs on 3 devices successfully. Thanks in advance! I would be greatful for a fix to either of these problems.

If you're using a Linux machine there is a program called heimdall (if I recall correctly) that is supposed to be similar to Odin. I have no personal experience with it so I suggest Google and the search function here.
There is an option in twrp to check for md5 make sure you're not having it Check for it or it will fail, I ran into the same issue after I started playing on my s3 never had that issue on other devices but I do on this one. You can also try using cwm.
For the boot loop try a factory reset a lot of times it will fix it. Also keep in mind that 4.3 roms take a long time to boot the first time after flashing. Check in the development section enewman17 has a stock 4.3 restore it will put the phone back like it would have been immediately after the 4.3 OTA (except warranty bit in download mode will still show a count and be in red letters) even down to stock Samsung 3e recovery.

I was on stock ROM on the rogers-canadian variant which should be the same as the at&t variant I think anyway I cant find the checkbox for "check md5" in twrp do u know where to look? Also can I flash cwm.zip through twrp?(if twrp will allow me) or will this cause more problems. I think there must be a way to fix my problems but I'm pas the extent of my knpwledge . also I think there must be an issue with the stock backup that is causing the bootloop don't know how to fix it. Not working still after multiple factory resets and advanced wipes
Thanks guys I really need help with this
Since you have the i747m (Canadian version), I think it would be best to start from scratch.
Were you running a stock 4.3 ROM?
I would love to start from scratch but I can't flash ROMs and I get a bootloop when I try to use my backup. So I can't boot into system and its the same as the i747 just without the att bloatware and rogers instead
Just flash the stock rooted ROM from xda. Just search for s3 pre-rooted roms , download, and flash via Odin

Thanks sounds simple enough but I will have a hard time getting a windows PC to use. In the meantime is there anything else I can try? Is it possible to flash cwm through twrp or does that not work? If it does will it harm the Odin process to go back to stock? And will USB debugging work if no OS is installed on phone... How does that work?
Let us know what was the most recent stock ROM you had on your phone. Is it 4.1.1, 4.1.2, or 4.3?

You probably need to format your internal SD card from twrp (the option where you have to type the word "yes") I believe it's under advanced wipe settings. I would backup anything important from your internal card, then format it. Then try doing whatever you're trying to do (flash a certain rom or restore a certain backup). I had a similar issue last week. I couldn't flash roms or restore backups because the phone would reboot into a bootloop when twrp tried wiping the data partition.
If you can't get into a rom or connect to a computer to backup your internal cards contents, you may have to use the file manager inside twrp to backup to your external SD card.

Thanks but actually my backups and ROMs are all on the phones internal memory. I think my safest bet will be to flash a ROM and cwm via Odin any suggestions on what version of Odin to use? Not sure sorry.. And I could be wrong but I think if you flash stock from Odin, it wipes your internal memory as well. If that's the case, I would backup whatever rom/backup you plan on using to your external memory and try my advice.
Other than that, not sure what to suggest. I can only advise based on what I have personally done in the past.

Thanks and good point
I use twrp on the n7 and its exellent. I tried it with the s3 and always had random problems after a flash or restore. I switched to Phil's cwm touch and have nor had a problem in months and I flash or restore almost daily.
I am on stock based custom rom on my i747m (canadian) TWRP 2.7.0.0 works perfectly, no issues.
Just in-case someone doesn't know they have newer version of twrp for both Us and Canadian versions.
