[Q] SGH-i747m bootloop & TWRP flashing issues - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So iv rooted, and using goo manager (can't use Odin because I don't have PC and this was easier) I flashed the latest version of twrp. I first did a nandroid backup and then tried to flash PAC ROM 4.4.2 nightly and cm11 neither worked (I have tried others since then) each time it says "no md5 file found". Its not the end of the world if I have to use the stock ROM for a while till I sort this out.. But when I flashed my nandroid backup I got stuck in a bootloop now I don't know what to do. I can get to twrp still and download mode if nessessary
Please help im a bit of a noob but I'm not stupid and have flashed ROMs on 3 devices successfully. Thanks in advance! I would be greatful for a fix to either of these problems.

If you're using a Linux machine there is a program called heimdall (if I recall correctly) that is supposed to be similar to Odin. I have no personal experience with it so I suggest Google and the search function here.
There is an option in twrp to check for md5 make sure you're not having it Check for it or it will fail, I ran into the same issue after I started playing on my s3 never had that issue on other devices but I do on this one. You can also try using cwm.
For the boot loop try a factory reset a lot of times it will fix it. Also keep in mind that 4.3 roms take a long time to boot the first time after flashing. Check in the development section enewman17 has a stock 4.3 restore it will put the phone back like it would have been immediately after the 4.3 OTA (except warranty bit in download mode will still show a count and be in red letters) even down to stock Samsung 3e recovery.

You're using the Canadian version of the s3 which is the i747M? Which ROM version were you running before installing TWRP?

I was on stock ROM on the rogers-canadian variant which should be the same as the at&t variant I think anyway I cant find the checkbox for "check md5" in twrp do u know where to look? Also can I flash cwm.zip through twrp?(if twrp will allow me) or will this cause more problems. I think there must be a way to fix my problems but I'm pas the extent of my knpwledge . also I think there must be an issue with the stock backup that is causing the bootloop don't know how to fix it. Not working still after multiple factory resets and advanced wipes
Thanks guys I really need help with this

Since you have the i747m (Canadian version), I think it would be best to start from scratch.
Were you running a stock 4.3 ROM?

I would love to start from scratch but I can't flash ROMs and I get a bootloop when I try to use my backup. So I can't boot into system and its the same as the i747 just without the att bloatware and rogers instead

Just flash the stock rooted ROM from xda. Just search for s3 pre-rooted roms , download, and flash via Odin

Thanks sounds simple enough but I will have a hard time getting a windows PC to use. In the meantime is there anything else I can try? Is it possible to flash cwm through twrp or does that not work? If it does will it harm the Odin process to go back to stock? And will USB debugging work if no OS is installed on phone... How does that work?

Let us know what was the most recent stock ROM you had on your phone. Is it 4.1.1, 4.1.2, or 4.3?

Actually yes occasionally I do. I think its after I try to flash a ROM or .zip file but it might happen periodically anyway I don't know

You probably need to format your internal SD card from twrp (the option where you have to type the word "yes") I believe it's under advanced wipe settings. I would backup anything important from your internal card, then format it. Then try doing whatever you're trying to do (flash a certain rom or restore a certain backup). I had a similar issue last week. I couldn't flash roms or restore backups because the phone would reboot into a bootloop when twrp tried wiping the data partition.
If you can't get into a rom or connect to a computer to backup your internal cards contents, you may have to use the file manager inside twrp to backup to your external SD card.

Thanks but actually my backups and ROMs are all on the phones internal memory. I think my safest bet will be to flash a ROM and cwm via Odin any suggestions on what version of Odin to use? Iv used 1.85 before to flash my gs2 skyrocket. Also will the USB debugging work if no os is installed on the phone :/

Not sure sorry.. And I could be wrong but I think if you flash stock from Odin, it wipes your internal memory as well. If that's the case, I would backup whatever rom/backup you plan on using to your external memory and try my advice.
Other than that, not sure what to suggest. I can only advise based on what I have personally done in the past.

Thanks and good point

I use twrp on the n7 and its exellent. I tried it with the s3 and always had random problems after a flash or restore. I switched to Phil's cwm touch and have nor had a problem in months and I flash or restore almost daily.

I am on stock based custom rom on my i747m (canadian) TWRP 2.7.0.0 works perfectly, no issues.
Just in-case someone doesn't know they have newer version of twrp for both Us and Canadian versions.

NANDROID Backups Don't Restore

The problem is I can't restore my Nandroid backups as they fail every time the custom recovery reaches /data. I have tried every custom recovery for the T-Mobile Galaxy S4. I'm no noob when it comes to android, I have done my research and haven't found any solutions. I flash a lot of custom roms and not having a Nandroid backup to go back to is a big pain. This is my first time I've posted on XDA and I really need some help.
You have to odin back to stock and reroot only way it worked for me, kept getting into bootloops when going back to nandroid

Can't say I've had any issues with nandroid restores (just backed up and flashed, knocking on wood...) do you have sufficient space in your internal storage? Others have report, and I've seen, internal storage filling up from backups that are 'hidden away' by CWM but don't get deleted by a data wipe.

I have my backups stored on my External SDCard, I don't think that space is an issue. Also, I odin'd back to stock, re-rooted and all that and I'm still getting the same error.
I feel your pain, but doing odin is a pain in the a$$, have you tried any other recovery yet? That way you can see if it is a recovery issue, do a backup and then a restore to see, maybe even rolling back a version or 2, I would try these, before I go thru all that again.
The Ax says, just trying to help here. Good luck.
Sorry didn't see your last reply, must have happen when I was replying, wow today's technology.

Your microSD card might be defective. As uncivilized suggested try the restore from internal SD. That should work.
So I just backed-up to the internal SD-Card then Restored from the Internal SD-Card and it failed again.:crying:

I just flashed TWRP 2.6.0.0 with Odin and I am currently backing up and then I will restore it to see if I get the error.

Im using twrp v 2.5.0.3 but im not seeing it in their website. Try using an earlier version than 2.6.0.0 , I would format internal sd card flash a rom from your ext-sd card then use odin to flash an earlier version of twrp.tar
I have followed all of your steps exactly except for I flashed 2.5.2.0 instead of 2.5.3.0 and it still failed, this is pretty frustrating but thanks for the help.:crying:

I encountered the same problem, go to KTweaker if you are still using ktoonsez kernel. And change your settings to this.
Make sure you set it to on Boot as Immediately & save the settings. Same thing happened to me, I put in his settings and problem vanished.
After you do that, turn it off and go to recovery. Wipe Dalvik Cache & Cache than finally Fix Permissions in Advanced.

+1 you're having an issue with the kernel you're using.
Are you using exFAT 64gb sd card? If you are, take it out and your phone will boot fine.
Sent from My S4 in BEASTMODE
Ok. Because you formatted the internal storage with TWRP your partitions are probably messed up. Odin back to stock (like you need to return it) and start over again. You can use TWRP if you want, its a great recovery. Just dont format the internal storage with it. Obviously try the easier fixes first, ie SD card. These phones seem to be more sensitive to formatting than previous galaxy models.

Ive been thru this issue also Trust me Restore stock once more and use oudhs cwm base recovery with swipe gestures. .. skip the twrp junk.
You need to root in a specific manor to bypass the Selinux permissive setting that samsung put on the s4.
I root with odin and flash these files in order after u google search them there also in the s4 root section ..I forget which page.
First @ foremost
FLASH RECOVERY I RECOMEND OUDHS 1.0.3.3 swipe gesture By shabby penguin.
Reboot device into recovery
Flash in order
1# root m919 UVUAMDL.zip
2nd #flash MDB SetUIDoff.zip that bypasses the kernel issue that samsung has blocked ..
3# flash superuser.zip of your choice
#4 wipe cash
5#reboot
You can now flash any Rom, restore etc.... no issues.

yes, i have. I also got back to stock, used an older recover, flashed with an older version of CM and nothing. I first was using CWM 6.0.3.7., after that I used 6.0.4.3, then an older version of TWRP but nothing. I also tried booting to system without flashing gapps.

Well, thank you, but it didnĀ“t work.
it happened to me the same thing months ago. never had solution. still in waiting. attempt internal and external SD format. and followed the same. I hope someday they can come up with the solution! : (
i have the same problem too
I try to install multiple ROM 4.2.2 and I could only install one version AOKP Milstone JB1. I also worked the other. however all 4.1.2 rom if I worked. I could not install any 4.3 and 4.4 now does not know what is the problem but I've tried everything! anyone found the solution yet but I see I'm not the only one! (excuse my bad English, not my language )
Well you all are right, I am also using shadow mastery (stock rooted rom). Just because I had the same problem sometimes stucking and rebooting and sometimes after going in gallery. Even I can't use 4.3 and 4.4 roms. Anyone have to contact with room developer or someone who know about this problem.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
You might want to find an Official T-Mobile or Telus 4.1.2 or 4.0.3/4.0.4 rom that is Odin flashable, not one that has been custom made/flashable from recovery - then just start over after getting back to true stock, change to TWRP or CWM recovery that is 4.3+ compatiable, root and then flash rom/gapps etc.

Aroma only installs selected apks not system files

When I try to install Hyperdrive rom latest release 15 I select all i want in the aroma but then it starts to install only the apps i chose. It is not installing any of the mandatory system files which makes sense why it installs in like 10 seconds.. I wipe everything sys, delvik cache, cache, data.. using TWRP 2.7.0.1
please help me
This is also happening when I try to install Wicked Rom so ANY suggestions would be awesome. I'm probably going to return to stock and then flash new rom
after reinstalling stock firmware through odin and then trying to install a custom rom same thing is still happening so im guessing i should try and go to stock and than completely wipe everything and then try from there?
I'd install a ROM that doesn't have an aroma installer. Then install the one you want with aroma.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
After successfully installing stock and TWRP recovery 2.7.0.1
I took your advice and tried install gpe rom and still after rebooting i just get a black boot screen samsung galaxy s4 screen
Is there more i could wipe like a partition that is still bad maybe?
I'm going to go to stock again but this time with odin 3.07 not what i was using which was a much older odin and im going to then install a custom recovery and root and please do tell me your favorite recovery im probably gonna try oudhs cwm and then ill see if i run into problems installing roms.
The main problem is the rom likes to install all its apk options for example adobe reader or samsung music app but it will NOT install any mandatory system files which make the phone work.
after i get stock i also wipe data factory reset in stock recovery which delete everything which is fine i knew it would.
This time i'll also be resetting the flash counter which i havent done

I haven't but i will try. At the moment i am at stock firmware and I would like to know what my filesystem should look like.. When I go into just "/" section before sdcard it shows me lots of folders some looking unnessary and maybe in the way of installing my rom normally View attachment 2650548
View attachment 2650549
View attachment 2650550
Could this be a bootloader issue or something with my filesystem because I can tell these roms are all avoiding like half of their installation. They should be extracting more files and take more than 20 seconds to install
Which bootloader do you have?

there was a thread saying that you could repair your phone if your data was set to a read only not write but i checked with adbshell mount and all my stuff is rw so im good there..
I haven't ever had a problem where rom doesn't fully install..
I was minding my own business on GPe rom from Kot94h and it was good but i decided hmm this has been my daily driver for queit some time ill switch to hyper drive and bamm i realize stuff isn't going right.

I find it interesting how while an app installs i see it installing like system/app/blahblah.apk and that is like the first thing it starts to install
i think if i can remember a rom usually does system/framwork or something along those lines first
I have also MD5 checked all my files and they are all perfectly matching
Any Ideas?
I have this idea to try and erase every file on my device and then flash a room is that even possible
Could someone download root file explorer and go to their "/" and just snap a pic of the folders i want to compare your folders properties for example one of mine say rwxr-xr-x
Or i have another idea.
Is it possible to reformat my system partition with odin maybe with a PIT file??
Think, why would a rom skip installation of system files? It looks like it blazes through the installation after installing a few system apps

[Q] T999 Can I install stock ROM with CWM Recovery?

I'm running CM11 with CWM Recovery. I don't want to get ride of CWM Recovery.
Can I install the stock 4.3 ROM without using other recovery?
Thank you.
Yes

Which ROM do I use?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
Is this one OK?
T-MOBILE SGH-T999
Official Firmware
(for use with Odin)
UVUENC2
Do I just use CWM Recovery to install? Or do I have to use Odin?
Is there any other files I need?
Thanks.
No, you need something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521742

Wow! I had already forgotten all about that! Lol!
And just fyi to the op, the one you asked about is the full firmware. If you want to flash just a stock Rom but keep everything else as is, use the link from serio22, or pick whichever rom you prefer from dev section. There should be a plain stock rom for every build, you just have to dig for most of them. They will all most likely be rooted, deodexed, and de-knoxed just so you know.

I'm very new to this.
I saw the link serio22 posted.
I chose the Based on the Official Release. T999_Official_UVUEMJC_Deodexed_KnoxFree.
Do I actually need to use the other files such as Kernels and Modems?
Thanks.
Depends.. If you updated to official 4.3 firmware before cm11 then no.. If you didn't, then yes.. And I just realized I gave you a link to an older 4.3 build.. Newest one is NC2, if you want it try to see if you can find a ROM based on it

I don't think I need the newest 4.3.
I'm doing this because I have a friend who currently has the same phone as I do but his screen is fully cracked. I suppose the full digitizer is.
So he's wondering if I he can use my phone temporarily to get his data out. I tried getting out from the Kies desktop software but can't access due to his password lock.
I just thought of installing 4.3 on my phone and sync his previous data from his computer to my phone.
I myself have never updated to 4.3 on my phone. I suppose he has. He doesn't remember. I don't want to change my CWM recovery. Just a quick install to 4.3 and back to CM11 after.
So you're saying I have to install the Modem and Kernel too in order I can get 4.3 working on my phone?
Thanks.
Well actually, the modem and kernel is just to get data and WiFi working, but given the circumstances, I don't think it would really matter

The kernel should be included in the rom. Without the modem, data connections and phone signal won't work as serio22 said. If you're running cm11 though you might want to consider updating the firmware anyway. As I understand it, the roms work much better with full 4.3 firmware. You might want to verify that though.
Just curious, how are you planning to try and get his data to your phone? Is it a nandroid backup? I can tell you a possible alternative to be able to get his current data off his device. He'd have to be using a custom kernel I think though. (A custom recovery might be enough. Can't remember for sure)

His phone only has been using the official firmware. No extra modding at all.
The only data he needs is his contacts, notes, and possibly his photos.
I will give it a try with these 4.3 ROMs and see if it'll work.
Thanks.
Ok, if it doesnt work out, let us know and ill try to give you other options.

Hey... if you're just trying to recover his data why don't you use Odin to flash cwm to his phone and use the hardware buttons to do a nandroid backup?
Seems to be the easiest option to me.
You may be able to do a factory reset to get rid of the password lock while you're at it without wiping his internal sd card. From there its just a matter of plugging in to pc and copying the sd contents to desktop.

I was able to get the data he last synced with Kies before but only up to the last date he synced, which was November 2013.
I don't think I can do the nandroid backup because the screen is totally black. Digitzer is broken. The phone itself still works. I can see my desktop reading it.
Is there anyway I can fully duplicate his current data and settings to my phone now without depending on the broken screen?
Thanks.

Clockwork mod recovery can use the hard keys to select options and execute commands.
Just put the same recovery on his phone using Odin and boot with hard button method (volume up, home and power buttons. Let go of power after first vibrate)
Then simply use the volume and power buttons and mirror the actions on his phone to create a backup.
Since you will be creating a backup of your phone at the same time it will be safe to restore the one you make from his phone on yours and retrieve data.

Is that safe to do with a black screen?
I can't see if I have chosen the wrong option while trying to replace the Recovery system.
Thanks.
Alternatively you can try to use adb from your computer. If you are not familiar with it just Google android adb and it should tell you all about it, how to install and use it.
You'll probably need to flash an insecure or custom kernel (should be able to do this from odin).
Then boot up the device (I prefer doing this from recovery), connect to the computer and start adb. Once confirmed its running and it sees the device, enter the following command:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=\path\on\computer\data.img
This can take a while.
Then boot recovery on your phone and enter the command again, but in reverse.
dd if=\path\on\computer\data.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15
This will write the data to your device where you can then use it exactly as he had it before the screen broke.
You might think its easier to use cwm as stated above, but I figured id offer an alternative in case youre not comfortable with it.

Either way is safe. You would literally be mirroring actions on your phone.
Press a button on your phone and do the same on his.
Since cwm and other custom recoveries are all the same setup when using the same versions I've actually done that to make a nandroid backup on a completely different model phone. Specifically I used a Huawei Ascend (original) to guide me through backing up a huawei M835 without a hitch since they both use the same recovery system.

Thanks for all the tips.
I managed to enter the PIN to the broken phone and backed up the most recent data using Kies software.
I realized how much little space I have left on my phone after having restored only some of those data.
Is the old CM11 install files still taking up the space right now? If so, how can I delete them?
I already placed the backup file from CM11 to my own microSD card.
Thanks.
If youre running low on space its most likely because you either have a lot of apps installed, or just are simply using a lot with your own stuff. When you flash a rom it formats the system partition and writes the new one. Going between cm and tw, you would've had to factory reset so there shouldn't be anything left from your previous one except for your own user data on the sdcards. You just need to dig in with a file explorer and find what's eating up your space. (Your nandroid backups do take up a lot of space, up to 2gb each, so check thst you dont have multiple backups saved.)
